Aerodynamic Prior-Free Coordinated Trajectory Generation and Tracking Control for a Tail-Sitter UAV

This paper presents a coordinated trajectory generation and tracking control framework for a tail-sitter unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV), which does not require aerodynamic priors identified for a specific airframe while addressing the challenge of flight control under highly nonlinear aerodynamics across the full flight envelope. The core innovation lies in employing phase-specific aerodynamic modeling strategies for planning and tracking, tailored to their distinct functional characteristics, without requiring airframe-specific aerodynamic priors. Specifically, the phi-theory model under coordinated flight is employed to derive an analytic differential flatness mapping, and a simplified but locally accurate model is established for predictive control to enable real-time aerodynamic parameter estimation. The proposed framework is evaluated extensively through both simulation and challenging real-world flight tests under mild wind conditions, showing high-precision tracking and adaptability across the tested aerodynamic conditions. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first real-world demonstration of accurate trajectory tracking over tested flight regimes spanning the full envelope of a tail-sitter UAV without relying on aerodynamic identification campaigns. COMET: A Dual Swashplate Autonomous Coaxial Bi-copter AAV with High-Maneuverability and Long-Endurance

Coaxial bi-copter autonomous aerial vehicles (AAVs) have garnered attention due to their potential for improved rotor system efficiency and compact form factor. However, balancing efficiency, maneuverability, and compactness in coaxial bi-copter systems remains a key design challenge, limiting their practical deployment. This letter introduces COMET, a coaxial bi-copter AAV platform featuring a dual swashplate mechanism. The coaxial bi-copter system's efficiency and compactness are optimized through bench tests, and the whole prototype's efficiency and robustness under varying payload conditions are verified through flight endurance experiments. The maneuverability performance of the system is evaluated in comprehensive trajectory tracking tests. The results indicate that the dual swashplate configuration enhances tracking performance and improves flight efficiency compared to the single swashplate alternative. Successful autonomous flight trials across various scenarios verify COMET's potential for real-world applications.

Threat-Aware UAV Dodging of Human-Thrown Projectiles with an RGB-D Camera

Uncrewed aerial vehicles (UAVs) performing tasks such as transportation and aerial photography are vulnerable to intentional projectile attacks from humans. Dodging such a sudden and fast projectile poses a significant challenge for UAVs, requiring ultra-low latency responses and agile maneuvers. Drawing inspiration from baseball, in which pitchers' body movements are analyzed to predict the ball's trajectory, we propose a novel real-time dodging system that leverages an RGB-D camera. Our approach integrates human pose estimation with depth information to predict the attacker's motion trajectory and the subsequent projectile trajectory. Additionally, we introduce an uncertainty-aware dodging strategy to enable the UAV to dodge incoming projectiles efficiently. Our perception system achieves high prediction accuracy and outperforms the baseline in effective distance and latency. The dodging strategy addresses temporal and spatial uncertainties to ensure UAV safety. Extensive real-world experiments demonstrate the framework's reliable dodging capabilities against sudden attacks and its outstanding robustness across diverse scenarios.

Predictor-Based Time Delay Control of A Hex-Jet Unmanned Aerial Vehicle

Turbojet-powered VTOL UAVs have garnered increased attention in heavy-load transport and emergency services, due to their superior power density and thrust-to-weight ratio compared to existing electronic propulsion systems. The main challenge with jet-powered UAVs lies in the complexity of thrust vectoring mechanical systems, which aim to mitigate the slow dynamics of the turbojet. In this letter, we introduce a novel turbojet-powered UAV platform named Hex-Jet. Our concept integrates thrust vectoring and differential thrust for comprehensive attitude control. This approach notably simplifies the thrust vectoring mechanism. We utilize a predictor-based time delay control method based on the frequency domain model in our Hex-Jet controller design to mitigate the delay in roll attitude control caused by turbojet dynamics. Our comparative studies provide valuable insights for the UAV community, and flight tests on the scaled prototype demonstrate the successful implementation and verification of the proposed predictor-based time delay control technique.
