Two-dimensional non-Hermitian topological phases induced by asymmetric hopping in a one-dimensional superlattice

Non-Hermitian systems can host topological states with novel topological invariants and bulk-edge correspondences that are distinct from conventional Hermitian systems. Here we show that two unique classes of non-Hermitian 2D topological phases, a 2$\mathbb{Z}$ non-Hermitian Chern insulator and a $\mathbb{Z}_{2}$ topological semimetal, can be realized by tuning staggered asymmetric hopping strengths in a 1D superlattice. These non-Hermitian topological phases support real edge modes due to robust $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric-like spectra and can coexist in certain parameter regime. The proposed phases can be experimentally realized in photonic or atomic systems and may open an avenue for exploring novel classes of non-Hermitian topological phases with 1D superlattices.

Topological bands and triply-degenerate points in non-Hermitian hyperbolic metamaterials

Hyperbolic metamaterials (HMMs), an unusual class of electromagnetic metamaterials, have found important applications in various fields due to their distinctive properties. A surprising feature of HMMs is that even continuous HMMs can possess topological edge modes. However, previous studies based on equal-frequency surface (analogy of Fermi surface) may not correctly capture the topology of entire bands. Here we develop a topological band description for continuous HMMs that can be described by a non-Hermitian Hamiltonian formulated from Maxwell's equations. We find two types of three dimensional non-Hermitian triply-degenerate points with complex linear dispersions and topological charges $\pm 2$ and 0 induced by chiral and gyromagnetic effects. Because of the photonic nature, the vacuum band plays an important role for topological edge states and bulk-edge correspondence in HMMs. The topological band results are numerically confirmed by direct simulation of Maxwell's equations. Our work presents a general non-Hermitian topological band treatment of continuous HMMs, paving the way for exploring interesting topological phases in photonic continua and device implementations of topological HMMs.

Wannier-type photonic higher-order topological corner states induced solely by gain and loss

Photonic crystals have provided a controllable platform to examine excitingly new topological states in open systems. In this work, we reveal photonic topological corner states in a photonic graphene with mirror-symmetrically patterned gain and loss. Such a nontrivial Wannier-type higher-order topological phase is achieved through solely tuning on-site gain/loss strengths, which leads to annihilation of the two valley Dirac cones at a time-reversal-symmetric point, as the gain and loss change the effective tunneling between adjacent sites. We find that the symmetry-protected photonic corner modes exhibit purely imaginary energies and the role of the Wannier center as the topological invariant is illustrated. For experimental considerations, we also examine the topological interface states near a domain wall. Our work introduces an interesting platform for non-Hermiticity-induced photonic higher-order topological insulators, which, with current experimental technologies, can be readily accessed.

Topological phases in pseudospin-1 Fermi gases with two-dimensional spin-orbit coupling

The recent experimental realization of spin-orbit (SO) coupling for ultracold bosons and fermions opens an exciting avenue for engineering quantum matter that may be challenging to realize in solid state materials such as SO coupled spin-1 fermions. While one-dimensional SO coupling for spin-1 bosons has been experimentally realized, the generation of two-dimensional (2D) SO coupling and its topological properties are largely unexplored. Here we propose an experimental scheme for realizing a 2D Dresselhaus-type SO coupling in a square lattice for spin-1 Fermi gases. Because of the extended spin degree of freedom, many interesting topological phases could exist without relying on lattice point group symmetries that are crucial in solid state materials. These exotic phases include triply-degenerate points, quadratic band touching, a large Chern number ($C=5$) superfluid with 5 Majorana modes, triple-Weyl fermions, etc. Our scheme can be generalized to larger spins and provides a new route for engineering topological quantum matter by utilizing large spin degrees of freedom, instead of specific lattice symmetries.

Active Perovskite Hyperbolic Metasurface

A special class of anisotropic media, hyperbolic metamaterials and metasurfaces (HMMs), has attracted much attention in recent years due to its unique abilities to manipulate and engineer electromagnetic waves on the subwavelength scale. Because all HMM designs require metal dielectric composites, the unavoidable metal loss at optical frequencies inspired the development of active HMMs, where gain materials is incorporated to compensate the metal loss. Here, we experimentally demonstrate an active type II HMM that operates at vacuum wavelength near 750 nm on a silicon platform. Different from previous active HMMs operating below 1 μm, the dielectric constituent in our HMM is solely composed of gain medium, by utilizing solution processed and widely tunable metal halide perovskite gain. Thanks to the facile fabrication, tunability and silicon compatibility of our active HMM, this work paves the way towards HMM's integration into on chip components, and eventually, into photonic integrated circuits.

A verifiable framework of entanglement-free quantum secret sharing with information-theoretical security

Quantum secret sharing (QSS) schemes without entanglement have huge advantages in scalability and are easier to realize as they only require sequential communications of a single quantum system. However, these schemes often come with drawbacks such as exact ($n, n$) structure, security flaws and absences of effective cheating detections. To address these problems, we propose a verifiable framework by utilizing entanglement-free states to construct ($t, n$)-QSS schemes. Our work is the heuristic step towards information-theoretical security in entanglement-free QSS, and it sheds light on how to establish effective verification mechanism against cheating. As a result, the proposed framework has a significant importance in constructing QSS schemes for versatile applications in quantum networks due to its intrinsic scalability, flexibility and information theoretical security.

Non-Hermitian topological phase transitions for quantum spin Hall insulators

The interplay between non-Hermiticity and topology opens an exciting avenue for engineering novel topological matter with unprecedented properties. While previous studies have mainly focused on one-dimensional systems or Chern insulators, here we investigate topological phase transitions to/from quantum spin Hall (QSH) insulators driven by non-Hermiticity. We show that a trivial to QSH insulator phase transition can be induced by solely varying non-Hermitian terms, and there exists exceptional edge arcs in QSH phases. We establish two topological invariants for characterizing the non-Hermitian phase transitions: i) with time-reversal symmetry, the biorthogonal $\mathbb{Z}_2$ invariant based on non-Hermitian Wilson loops, and ii) without time-reversal symmetry, a biorthogonal spin Chern number through biorthogonal decompositions of the Bloch bundle of the occupied bands. These topological invariants can be applied to a wide class of non-Hermitian topological phases beyond Chern classes, and provides a powerful tool for exploring novel non-Hermitian topological matter and their device applications.

Symmetry-protected localized states at defects in non-Hermitian systems

Understanding how local potentials affect system eigenmodes is crucial for experimental studies of nontrivial bulk topology. Recent studies have discovered many exotic and highly non-trivial topological states in non-Hermitian systems. As such, it would be interesting to see how non-Hermitian systems respond to local perturbations. In this work, we consider chiral and particle-hole -symmetric non-Hermitian systems on a bipartite lattice, including SSH model and photonic graphene, and find that a disordered local potential could induce bound states evolving from the bulk. When the local potential on a single site becomes infinite, which renders a lattice vacancy, chiral-symmetry-protected zero-energy mode and particle-hole symmetry-protected bound states with purely imaginary eigenvalues emerge near the vacancy. These modes are robust against any symmetry-preserved perturbations. Our work generalizes the symmetry-protected localized states to non-Hermitian systems.

Non-Hermitian Photonics based on Charge-Parity Symmetry

Parity-time ($\mathcal{PT}$) symmetry, originally conceived for non-Hermitian open quantum systems, has opened an excitingly new avenue for the coherent control of light. By tailoring optical gain and loss in integrated photonic structures, $\mathcal{PT}$ symmetric non-Hermitian photonics has found applications in many fields ranging from single mode lasing to novel topological matters. Here we propose a new paradigm towards non-Hermitian photonics based on the charge-parity ($\mathcal{CP}$) symmetry that has the potential to control the flow of light in an unprecedented way. In particular, we consider continuous dielectric chiral materials, where the charge conjugation and parity symmetries are broken individually, but preserved jointly. Surprisingly, the phase transition between real and imaginary spectra across the exceptional point is accompanied by a dramatic change of the photonic band topology from dielectric to hyperbolic. We showcase broad applications of $\mathcal{CP}$ symmetric photonics such as all-angle polarization-dependent negative refraction materials, enhanced spontaneous emission for laser engineering, and non-Hermitian topological photonics. The $\mathcal{CP}$ symmetry opens an unexplored pathway for studying non-Hermitian photonics without optical gain/loss by connecting two previously distinct material properties: chirality and hyperbolicity, therefore providing a powerful tool for engineering many promising applications in photonics and other related fields.

Experimental realization of a non-magnetic one-way spin switch

Controlling magnetism through non-magnetic means is highly desirable for future electronic devices, as such means typically have ultra-low power requirements and can provide coherent control. In recent years, great experimental progress has been made in the field of electrical manipulation of magnetism in numerous material systems. These studies generally do not consider the directionality of the applied non-magnetic potentials and/or magnetism switching. Here, we theoretically conceive and experimentally demonstrate a non-magnetic one-way spin switch device using a spin-orbit coupled Bose-Einstein condensate subjected to a moving spin-independent dipole potential. The physical foundation of this unidirectional device is based on the breakdown of Galilean invariance in the presence of spin-orbit coupling. Such a one-way spin switch opens an avenue for designing novel quantum devices with unique functionalities and may facilitate further experimental investigations of other one-way spintronic and atomtronic devices.

Verifiable Threshold Quantum Secret Sharing with Sequential Communication

A ($t$, $n$) threshold quantum secret sharing (QSS) is proposed based on a single $d$-level quantum system. It enables the ($t$, $n$) threshold structure based on Shamir's secret sharing and simply requires sequential communication in $d$-level quantum system to recover secret. Besides, the scheme provides a verification mechanism which employs an additional qudit to detect cheats and eavesdropping during secret reconstruction, and allows a participant to use the share repeatedly. Analyses show that the proposed scheme is resistant to typical attacks. Moreover, the scheme is salable in participant number and easier to realize compared to related schemes. More generally, our scheme also presents a generic method to construct new ($t$, $n$) threshold QSS schemes based on $d$-level quantum system from other classical threshold secret sharing.

Experimental realization of a superfluid stripe phase in a spin-orbit-coupled Bose-Einstein condensate enabled by momentum-space hopping

In the past few decades, the search for supersolid-like phases has attracted great attention in condensed matter and ultracold atom communities. Here we experimentally demonstrate a route for realizing a superfluid stripe-phase in a spin-orbit coupled Bose-Einstein condensate by employing a weak optical lattice to induce momentum-space hopping between two spin-orbit band minima. We characterize the striped ground state as a function of lattice coupling strength and spin-orbit detuning and find good agreement with mean-field simulations. We observe coherent Rabi oscillations in momentum space between two band minima and demonstrate a long lifetime of the ground state. Our work offers an exciting new and stable experimental platform for exploring superfluid stripe-phases and their exotic excitations, which may shed light on the properties of supersolid-like states.

Topological Triply Degenerate Points Induced by Spin-Tensor-Momentum Couplings

The recent discovery of triply degenerate points (TDPs) in topological materials has opened a new perspective toward the realization of novel quasiparticles without counterparts in quantum field theory. The emergence of such protected nodes is often attributed to spin-vector-momentum couplings. Here we show that the interplay between spin-tensor- and spin-vector-momentum couplings can induce three types of TDPs, classified by different monopole charges ($\mathcal{C}=\pm 2,\pm 1,0$). A Zeeman field can lift them into Weyl points with distinct numbers and charges. Different TDPs of the same type are connected by intriguing Fermi arcs at surfaces, and transitions between different types are accompanied by level crossings along high-symmetry lines. We further propose an experimental scheme to realize such TDPs in cold-atom optical lattices. Our results provide a framework for studying spin-tensor-momentum coupling-induced TDPs and other exotic quasiparticles.

Superfluid-quasicrystal in a Bose-Einstein condensate

Quasicrystal is a class of ordered structures defying conventional classification of solid crystals and may carry classically forbidden (e.g., 5-fold) rotational symmetries. In view of long-sought supersolids, a natural question is whether a superfluid can spontaneously form quasicrystalline order that is not possessed by the underlying Hamiltonian, forming "superfluid-quasicrystals". Here we show that a superfluid-quasicrystal stripe state with the minimal 5-fold rotational symmetry can be realized as the ground state of a Bose-Einstein condensate within a practical experimental scheme. There exists a rich phase diagram consisting of various superfluid-quasicrystal, supersolid, and plane-wave phases. Our scheme can be generalized for generating other higher-order (e.g., 7-fold) quasicrystal states, and provides a platform for investigating such new exotic quantum matter.

Momentum-Space Josephson Effects

The Josephson effect is a prominent phenomenon of quantum supercurrents that has been widely studied in superconductors and superfluids. Typical Josephson junctions consist of two real-space superconductors (superfluids) coupled through a weak tunneling barrier. Here we propose a momentum-space Josephson junction in a spin-orbit coupled Bose-Einstein condensate, where states with two diffferent momenta are coupled through Raman-assisted tunneling. We show that Josephson currents can be induced not only by applying the equivalent of "voltages", but also by tuning tunneling phases. Such tunneling-phase-driven Josephson junctions in momentum space are characterized through both full mean field analysis and a concise two-level model, demonstrating the important role of interactions between atoms. Our scheme provides a platform for experimentally realizing momentum-space Josephson junctions and exploring their applications in quantum-mechanical circuits.

Momentum-space Aharonov-Bohm interferometry in Rashba spin-orbit coupled Bose-Einstein condensates

Since the recent experimental realization of synthetic Rashba spin-orbit coupling paved a new avenue for exploring and engineering topological phases in ultracold atoms, a precise, solid detection of Berry phase has been desired for unequivocal characterization of system topology. Here, we propose a scheme to conduct momentum-space Aharonov-Bohm interferometry in a Rashba spin-orbit coupled Bose-Einstein condensate with a sudden change of in-plane Zeeman field, capable of measuring the Berry phase of Rashba energy bands. We find that the Berry phase with the presence of a Dirac point is directly revealed by a robust dark interference fringe, and that as a function of external Zeeman field is characterized by the contrast of fringes. We also build a variational model describing the interference process with semiclassical equations of motion of essential dynamical quantities, which lead to agreeable trajectories and geometric phases with the real-time simulation of Gross-Pitaevskii equation. Our study would provide timely guidance for the experimental detection of Berry phase in ultracold atomic systems and help further investigation on their interference dynamics in momentum space.

Adiabatically tuning quantized supercurrents in an annular Bose-Einstein condensate

The ability to generate and tune quantized persistent supercurrents is crucial for building superconducting or atomtronic devices with novel functionalities. In ultracold atoms, previous methods for generating quantized supercurrents are generally based on dynamical processes to prepare atoms in metastable excited states. Here we show that arbitrary quantized circulation states can be adiabatically prepared and tuned as the ground state of a ring-shaped Bose-Einstein condensate by utilizing spin-orbital-angular-momentum (SOAM) coupling and an external potential. There exists superfluid hysteresis for tuning supercurrents between different quantization values with nonlinear atomic interactions, which is explained by developing a nonlinear Landau-Zener theory. Our work will provide a powerful platform for studying SOAM coupled ultracold atomic gases and building novel atomtronic circuits.
