Robust data-driven approach for predicting the configurational energy of high entropy alloys

High entropy alloys (HEAs) have been increasingly attractive as promising next-generation materials due to their various excellent properties. It's necessary to essentially characterize the degree of chemical ordering and identify order-disorder transitions through efficient simulation and modeling of thermodynamics. In this study, a robust data-driven framework based on Bayesian approaches is proposed and demonstrated on the accurate and efficient prediction of configurational energy of high entropy alloys. The proposed effective pair interaction (EPI) model with ensemble sampling is used to map the configuration and its corresponding energy. Given limited data calculated by first-principles calculations, Bayesian regularized regression not only offers an accurate and stable prediction but also effectively quantifies the uncertainties associated with EPI parameters. Compared with the arbitrary determination of model complexity, we further conduct a physical feature selection to identify the truncation of coordination shells in EPI model using Bayesian information criterion. The results achieve efficient and robust performance in predicting the configurational energy, particularly given small data. The developed methodology is applied to study a series of refractory HEAs, i.e. NbMoTaW, NbMoTaWV and NbMoTaWTi where it is demonstrated how dataset size affects the confidence we can place in statistical estimates of configurational energy when data are sparse.

Defining Big Data Analytics Benchmarks for Next Generation Supercomputers

The design and construction of high performance computing (HPC) systems relies on exhaustive performance analysis and benchmarking. Traditionally this activity has been geared exclusively towards simulation scientists, who, unsurprisingly, have been the primary customers of HPC for decades. However, there is a large and growing volume of data science work that requires these large scale resources, and as such the calls for inclusion and investments in data for HPC have been increasing. So when designing a next generation HPC platform, it is necessary to have HPC-amenable big data analytics benchmarks. In this paper, we propose a set of big data analytics benchmarks and sample codes designed for testing the capabilities of current and next generation supercomputers.

Square Lattice Gases with Two- and Three-body Interactions Revisited

Monte Carlo simulations have been used to study the phase diagrams for square Ising-lattice gas models with two-body and three-body interactions for values of interaction parameters in a range that has not been previously considered. We find unexpected qualitative differences as compared with predictions made on general grounds.

Phase diagram and critical behavior of the square-lattice Ising model with competing nearest- and next-nearest-neighbor interactions

Using the parallel tempering algorithm and GPU accelerated techniques, we have performed large-scale Monte Carlo simulations of the Ising model on a square lattice with antiferromagnetic (repulsive) nearest-neighbor(NN) and next-nearest-neighbor(NNN) interactions of the same strength and subject to a uniform magnetic field. Both transitions from the (2x1) and row-shifted (2x2) ordered phases to the paramagnetic phase are continuous. From our data analysis, reentrance behavior of the (2x1) critical line and a bicritical point which separates the two ordered phases at T=0 are confirmed. Based on the critical exponents we obtained along the phase boundary, Suzuki's weak universality seems to hold.
