Propagation Map Reconstruction via Interpolation Assisted Matrix Completion

Constructing a propagation map from a set of scattered measurements finds important applications in many areas, such as localization, spectrum monitoring and management. Classical interpolation-type methods have poor performance in regions with very sparse measurements. Recent advance in matrix completion has the potential to reconstruct a propagation map from sparse measurements, but the spatial resolution is limited. This paper proposes to integrate interpolation with matrix completion to exploit both the spatial correlation and the potential low rank structure of the propagation map. The proposed method first enriches matrix observations using interpolation, and develops the statistics of the interpolation error based on a local polynomial regression model. Then, two uncertainty-aware matrix completion algorithms are developed to exploit the interpolation error statistics. It is numerically demonstrated that the proposed method outperforms Kriging and other state-of-the-art schemes, and reduces the mean squared error (MSE) of propagation map reconstruction by 10%-50% for a medium to large number of measurements.

Geography-aware Optimal UAV 3D Placement for LOS Relaying: A Geometry Approach

Many emerging technologies for the next generation wireless network prefer line-of-sight (LOS) propagation conditions to fully release their performance advantages. This paper studies 3D unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) placement to establish LOS links for two ground terminals in deep shadow in a dense urban environment. The challenge is that the LOS region for the feasible UAV positions can be arbitrary due to the complicated structure of the environment. While most existing works rely on simplified stochastic LOS models and problem relaxations, this paper focuses on establishing theoretical guarantees for the optimal UAV placement to ensure LOS conditions for two ground users in an actual propagation environment. It is found that it suffices to search a bounded 2D area for the globally optimal 3D UAV position. Thus, this paper develops an exploration-exploitation algorithm with a linear trajectory length and achieves above 99% global optimality over several real city environments being tested in our experiments. To further enhance the search capability in an ultra-dense environment, a dynamic multi-stage algorithm is developed and theoretically shown to find an $ε$-optimal UAV position with a search length $O(1/ε)$. Significant performance advantages are demonstrated in several numerical experiments for wireless communication relaying and wireless power transfer.

Lattice-aligned gallium oxynitride nanolayer for GaN surface enhancement and function extension

Gallium nitride (GaN), as a promising alternative semiconductor to silicon, is of well-established use in photoelectronic and electronic technology. However, the vulnerable GaN surface has been a critical restriction that hinders the development of GaN-based devices, especially regarding device stability and reliability. Here, we overcome this challenge by converting the GaN surface into a gallium oxynitride (GaON) epitaxial nanolayer through an in-situ two-step "oxidation-reconfiguration" process. The oxygen plasma treatment overcomes the chemical inertness of the GaN surface, and the sequential thermal annealing manipulates the kinetic-thermodynamic reaction pathways to create a metastable GaON nanolayer with wurtzite lattice. This GaN-derived GaON nanolayer is a tailored structure for surface reinforcement and possesses several advantages, including wide bandgap, high thermodynamic stability, and large valence band offset with GaN substrate. These enhanced physical properties can be further leveraged to enable GaN-based applications in new scenarios, such as complementary logic integrated circuits, photoelectrochemical water splitting, and ultraviolet photoelectric conversion, making GaON a versatile functionality extender.

UAV-aided Radio Map Construction Exploiting Environment Semantics

This paper constructs a full dimensional (6D) radio map to predict the channel gain between any transmitter location and any receiver location based on received signal strength (RSS) measurements between low-altitude aerial nodes and ground nodes. The main challenge is how to describe the signal strength attenuation due to the blockage from the environment. Conventional interpolation-type approaches fail to exploit the close relation between the radio map and the geometry of the environment. This paper proposes to construct radio maps by first estimating and constructing a multi-class 3D virtual obstacle map that describes the geometry of the environment with radio semantics. Mathematically, a least-squares problem is formulated to jointly estimate the virtual obstacle map and the propagation parameters. This problem is found to have a partial quasiconvexity that leads to the development of an efficient parameter estimation and radio map construction algorithm. Numerical experiments confirm that the proposed method substantially reduces the amount of measurement required for achieving the same radio map accuracy. It is also demonstrated that in a unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)-aided relay communication scenario, a radio map assisted approach for UAV placement can achieve more than 50% capacity gain.

Channel Knowledge Map (CKM)-Assisted Multi-UAV Wireless Network: CKM Construction and UAV Placement

Channel knowledge map (CKM) has recently emerged to facilitate the placement and trajectory optimization for unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) communications. This paper investigates a CKM-assisted multi-UAV wireless network, by focusing on the construction and utilization of CKMs for multi-UAV placement optimization. First, we consider the CKM construction problem when data measurements for only a limited number of points are available. Towards this end, we exploit a data-driven interpolation technique to construct CKMs to characterize the signal propagation environments. Next, we study the multi-UAV placement optimization problem by utilizing the constructed CKMs, in which the multiple UAVs aim to optimize their placement locations to maximize the weighted sum rate with their respectively associated ground base stations (GBSs). However, the rate function based on the CKMs is generally non-differentiable. To tackle this issue, we propose a novel iterative algorithm based on derivative-free optimization, in which a series of quadratic functions are iteratively constructed to approximate the objective function under a set of interpolation conditions, and accordingly, the UAVs' placement locations are updated by maximizing the approximate function subject to a trust region constraint. Finally, numerical results are presented to validate the proposed design achieves near-optimal performance, but with much lower implementation complexity.

UAV-aided RF Mapping for Sensing and Connectivity in Wireless Networks

The use of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) as flying radio access network (RAN) nodes offers a promising complement to traditional fixed terrestrial deployments. More recently yet still in the context of wireless networks, drones have also been envisioned for use as radio frequency (RF) sensing and localization devices. In both cases, the advantage of using UAVs lies in their ability to navigate themselves freely in 3D and in a timely manner to locations of space where the obtained network throughput or sensing performance is optimal. In practice, the selection of a proper location or trajectory for the UAV very much depends on local terrain features, including the position of surrounding radio obstacles. Hence, the robot must be able to map the features of its radio environment as it performs its data communication or sensing services. The challenges related to this task, referred here as radio mapping, are discussed in this paper. Its promises related to efficient trajectory design for autonomous radio-aware UAVs are highlighted, along with algorithm solutions. The advantages induced by radio-mapping in terms of connectivity, sensing, and localization performance are illustrated.

Derivative-Free Placement Optimization for Multi-UAV Wireless Networks with Channel Knowledge Map

This paper studies a multi-UAV wireless network, in which multiple UAV users share the same spectrum to send individual messages to their respectively associated ground base stations (GBSs). The UAV users aim to optimize their locations to maximize the weighted sum rate. While most existing work considers simplified line-of-sight (LoS) or statistic air-to-ground (A2G) channel models, we exploit the location-specific channel knowledge map (CKM) to enhance the placement performance in practice. However, as the CKMs normally contain discrete site- and location-specific channel data without analytic model functions, the corresponding weighted sum rate function becomes non-differentiable in general. In this case, conventional optimization techniques relying on function derivatives are inapplicable to solve the resultant placement optimization problem. To address this issue, we propose a novel iterative algorithm based on the derivative-free optimization. In each iteration, we first construct a quadratic function to approximate the non-differentiable weighted sum rate under a set of interpolation conditions, and then update the UAVs' placement locations by maximizing the approximate quadratic function subject to a trust region constraint. Numerical results show the convergence of the proposed algorithm. It is also shown that the proposed algorithm achieves a weighted sum rate close to the optimal design based on exhaustive search with much lower implementation complexity, and it significantly outperforms the conventional optimization method based on simplified LoS channel models and the heuristic design with each UAV hovering above its associated GBS.

Testing Rank of Incomplete Unimodal Matrices

Several statistics-based detectors, based on unimodal matrix models, for determining the number of sources in a field are designed. A new variance ratio statistic is proposed, and its asymptotic distribution is analyzed. The variance ratio detector is shown to outperform the alternatives. It is shown that further improvements are achievable via optimally selected rotations. Numerical experiments demonstrate the performance gains of our detection methods over the baseline approach.

Efficient Local Map Search Algorithms for the Placement of Flying Relays

This paper studies the optimal unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) placement problem for wireless networking. The UAV operates as a flying wireless relay to provide coverage extension for a base station (BS) and deliver capacity boost to a user shadowed by obstacles. While existing methods rely on statistical models for potential blockage of a direct propagation link, we propose an approach capable of leveraging local terrain information to offer performance guarantees. The proposed method allows to strike the best trade-off between minimizing propagation distances to ground terminals and discovering good propagation conditions. The algorithm only requires several propagation parameters, but it is capable to avoid deep propagation shadowing and is proven to find the globally optimal UAV position. Only a local exploration over the target area is required, and the maximum length of search trajectory is linear to the geographical scale. Hence, it lends itself to online search. Significant throughput gains are found when compared to other positioning approaches based on statistical propagation models.

Unimodality-Constrained Matrix Factorization for Non-Parametric Source Localization

Herein, the problem of simultaneous localization of multiple sources given a number of energy samples at different locations is examined. The strategies do not require knowledge of the signal propagation models, nor do they exploit the spatial signatures of the source. A non-parametric source localization framework based on a matrix observation model is developed. It is shown that the source location can be estimated by localizing the peaks of a pair of location signature vectors extracted from the incomplete energy observation matrix. A robust peak localization algorithm is developed and shown to decrease the source localization mean squared error (MSE) faster than O(1/M^1.5) with M samples, when there is no measurement noise. To extract the source signature vectors from a matrix with mixed energy from multiple sources, a unimodality-constrained matrix factorization (UMF) problem is formulated, and two rotation techniques are developed to solve the UMF efficiently. Our numerical experiments demonstrate that the proposed scheme achieves similar performance as the kernel regression baseline using only 1/5 energy measurement samples in detecting a single source, and the performance gain is more significant in the cases of detecting multiple sources.

Rotated Eigenstructure Analysis for Source Localization without Energy-decay Models

Herein, the problem of simultaneous localization of two sources given a modest number of samples is examined. In particular, the strategy does not require knowledge of the target signatures of the sources a priori, nor does it exploit classical methods based on a particular decay rate of the energy emitted from the sources as a function of range. General structural properties of the signatures such as unimodality are exploited. The algorithm localizes targets based on the rotated eigenstructure of a reconstructed observation matrix. In particular, the optimal rotation can be found by maximizing the ratio of the dominant singular value of the observation matrix over the nuclear norm of the optimally rotated observation matrix. It is shown that this ratio has a unique local maximum leading to computationally efficient search algorithms. Moreover, analytical results are developed to show that the squared localization error decreases at a rate faster than the baseline scheme.

Efficient Feedback Mechanisms for FDD Massive MIMO under User-level Cooperation

Channel state information (CSI) feedback is a challenging issue in frequency division multiplexing (FDD) massive MIMO systems. This paper studies a cooperative feedback scheme, where the users first exchange their CSI with each other by exploiting device-to-device (D2D) communications, then compute the precoder by themselves, and feed back the precoder to the base station (BS). Analytical results are derived to show that the cooperative precoder feedback is more efficient than the CSI feedback in terms of interference mitigation. Under the constraint of limited D2D communication capacity, we develop an adaptive CSI exchange strategy based on signal subspace projection and optimal bit partition. Numerical results demonstrate that the proposed cooperative precoder feedback scheme with adaptive CSI exchange significantly outperforms the CSI feedback scheme, even when the CSI is exchanged via rate-limited D2D communications.

Two-Tier Precoding for FDD Multi-cell Massive MIMO Time-Varying Interference Networks (Full Version)

Massive MIMO is a promising technology in future wireless communication networks. However, it raises a lot of implementation challenges, for example, the huge pilot symbols and feedback overhead, requirement of real-time global CSI, large number of RF chains needed and high computational complexity. We consider a two-tier precoding strategy for multi-cell massive MIMO interference networks, with an outer precoder for inter-cell/inter-cluster interference cancellation, and an inner precoder for intra-cell multiplexing. In particular, to combat with the computational complexity issue of the outer precoding, we propose a low complexity online iterative algorithm to track the outer precoder under time-varying channels. We follow an optimization technique and formulate the problem on the Grassmann manifold. We develop a low complexity iterative algorithm, which converges to the global optimal solution under static channels. In time-varying channels, we propose a compensation technique to offset the variation of the time-varying optimal solution. We show with our theoretical result that, under some mild conditions, perfect tracking of the target outer precoder using the proposed algorithm is possible. Numerical results demonstrate that the two-tier precoding with the proposed iterative compensation algorithm can achieve a good performance with a significant complexity reduction compared with the conventional two-tier precoding techniques in the literature.

Large Deviation Delay Analysis of Queue-Aware Multi-user MIMO Systems with Multi-timescale Mobile-Driven Feedback

Multi-user multi-input-multi-output (MU-MIMO) systems transmit data to multiple users simultaneously using the spatial degrees of freedom with user feedback channel state information (CSI). Most of the existing literatures on the reduced feedback user scheduling focus on the throughput performance and the user queueing delay is usually ignored. As the delay is very important for real-time applications, a low feedback queue-aware user scheduling algorithm is desired for the MU-MIMO system. This paper proposed a two-stage queue-aware user scheduling algorithm, which consists of a queue-aware mobile-driven feedback filtering stage and a SINR-based user scheduling stage, where the feedback filtering policy is obtained from the solution of an optimization problem. We evaluate the queueing performance of the proposed scheduling algorithm by using the sample path large deviation analysis. We show that the large deviation decay rate for the proposed algorithm is much larger than that of the CSI-only user scheduling algorithm. The numerical results also demonstrate that the proposed algorithm performs much better than the CSI-only algorithm requiring only a small amount of feedback.

Hierarchical Radio Resource Optimization for Heterogeneous Networks with Enhanced Inter-cell Interference Coordination (eICIC)

Interference is a major performance bottleneck in Heterogeneous Network (HetNet) due to its multi-tier topological structure. We propose almost blank resource block (ABRB) for interference control in HetNet. When an ABRB is scheduled in a macro BS, a resource block (RB) with blank payload is transmitted and this eliminates the interference from this macro BS to the pico BSs. We study a two timescale hierarchical radio resource management (RRM) scheme for HetNet with dynamic ABRB control. The long term controls, such as dynamic ABRB, are adaptive to the large scale fading at a RRM server for co-Tier and cross-Tier interference control. The short term control (user scheduling) is adaptive to the local channel state information within each BS to exploit the multi-user diversity. The two timescale optimization problem is challenging due to the exponentially large solution space. We exploit the sparsity in the interference graph of the HetNet topology and derive structural properties for the optimal ABRB control. Based on that, we propose a two timescale alternative optimization solution for the user scheduling and ABRB control. The solution has low complexity and is asymptotically optimal at high SNR. Simulations show that the proposed solution has significant gain over various baselines.

Convergence Analysis of Mixed Timescale Cross-Layer Stochastic Optimization

This paper considers a cross-layer optimization problem driven by multi-timescale stochastic exogenous processes in wireless communication networks. Due to the hierarchical information structure in a wireless network, a mixed timescale stochastic iterative algorithm is proposed to track the time-varying optimal solution of the cross-layer optimization problem, where the variables are partitioned into short-term controls updated in a faster timescale, and long-term controls updated in a slower timescale. We focus on establishing a convergence analysis framework for such multi-timescale algorithms, which is difficult due to the timescale separation of the algorithm and the time-varying nature of the exogenous processes. To cope with this challenge, we model the algorithm dynamics using stochastic differential equations (SDEs) and show that the study of the algorithm convergence is equivalent to the study of the stochastic stability of a virtual stochastic dynamic system (VSDS). Leveraging the techniques of Lyapunov stability, we derive a sufficient condition for the algorithm stability and a tracking error bound in terms of the parameters of the multi-timescale exogenous processes. Based on these results, an adaptive compensation algorithm is proposed to enhance the tracking performance. Finally, we illustrate the framework by an application example in wireless heterogeneous network.

Delay Analysis of Max-Weight Queue Algorithm for Time-varying Wireless Adhoc Networks - Control Theoretical Approach

Max weighted queue (MWQ) control policy is a widely used cross-layer control policy that achieves queue stability and a reasonable delay performance. In most of the existing literature, it is assumed that optimal MWQ policy can be obtained instantaneously at every time slot. However, this assumption may be unrealistic in time varying wireless systems, especially when there is no closed-form MWQ solution and iterative algorithms have to be applied to obtain the optimal solution. This paper investigates the convergence behavior and the queue delay performance of the conventional MWQ iterations in which the channel state information (CSI) and queue state information (QSI) are changing in a similar timescale as the algorithm iterations. Our results are established by studying the stochastic stability of an equivalent virtual stochastic dynamic system (VSDS), and an extended Foster-Lyapunov criteria is applied for the stability analysis. We derive a closed form delay bound of the wireless network in terms of the CSI fading rate and the sensitivity of MWQ policy over CSI and QSI. Based on the equivalent VSDS, we propose a novel MWQ iterative algorithm with compensation to improve the tracking performance. We demonstrate that under some mild conditions, the proposed modified MWQ algorithm converges to the optimal MWQ control despite the time-varying CSI and QSI.

Convergence Analysis of Saddle Point Problems in Time Varying Wireless Systems - Control Theoretical Approach

Saddle point problems arise from many wireless applications, and primal-dual iterative algorithms are widely applied to find the saddle points. In the existing literature, the convergence results of such algorithms are established assuming the problem specific parameters remain unchanged during the iterations. However, this assumption is unrealistic in time varying wireless systems, as explicit message passing is usually involved in the iterations and the channel state information (CSI) may change in a time scale comparable to the algorithm update period. This paper investigates the convergence behavior and the tracking error of primal-dual iterative algorithms under time varying CSI. The convergence results are established by studying the stability of an equivalent virtual dynamic system derived in the paper, and the Lyapunov theory is applied for the stability analysis. We show that the average tracking error is proportional to the time variation rate of the CSI. Based on these analyses, we also derive an adaptive primal-dual algorithm by introducing a compensation term to reduce the tracking error under the time varying CSI.
