Artificial Intelligence in a Photonic Temporal Processor

Optical neural networks (ONNs) promise high-throughput and energy-efficient artificial intelligence, yet essentially all implementations so far encode information across space either in free-space arrays or in integrated waveguide meshes, tying the number of neurons to the number of physical components and fixes the routing topology at fabrication. Here we show that moving the computation into time decouples computational dimension from hardware dimension. Exploiting space-time duality, we implement optical diffraction and interference entirely in time domain, using thin-film lithium niobate modulators as time lenses and temporal masks, with chromatic dispersion providing the coupling between successive temporal neurons. We experimentally verify high-order, complex-valued matrix-matrix multiplications using just a single optical input/output port, scaling the computational dimensions far beyond the channel count. By incorporating optical feedback, we extend this platform into versatile neural networks, where the network layers, neuron numbers, and synaptic connections are fully programmable and in-situ trainable. Our temporal diffractive neural networks are successfully validated on various classification benchmarks, alongside image and video generation tasks. Notably, using this platform we demonstrate an all-analogue generative pipeline in which the latent variable is drawn directly from amplified spontaneous emission, so that no digital sampling or electronic modulation appears anywhere in the generative path. Furthermore, high-resolution images and videos are generated at high frame rates, outperforming state-of-the-art modulator-refresh-limited optical generative systems. These results establish a unified photonic temporal computing framework, providing a scalable and deployable pathway toward next-generation machine intelligence.

Reinforcement Learning-Enabled Agent for Transmitter Optimization in Digital-Analog Radio-over-Fiber Fronthaul

Digital-analog radio-over-fiber (DA-RoF) has emerged as a promising fronthaul solution that combines the high spectral efficiency of analog transmission with the robustness of digital transmission. However, the performance of DA-RoF critically depends on several tightly coupled parameters, including the rounding factor (RF), scaling factor (SF), geometric shaping (GS) factor, and pre-equalization taps coefficients, which jointly affect quantization noise, nonlinear distortion, and bandwidth-induced inter-symbol interference (ISI). Conventional grid search-based optimization is computationally prohibitive and impractical for optical communication. In this work, we propose a reinforcement-learning (RL)-enabled DA-RoF fronthaul agent architecture, capable of autonomously learning optimal transmitter parameters from end-to-end signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) feedback without a differentiable channel model. Experimental results demonstrate that the trained agent steadily improves SNR through sequential decision making and outperforms baseline, achieving ~2.7-dB SNR improvement for 1- to 4-order DA-RoF transmission, reaching final SNR of 35.8 dB, 42.9 dB, 53.8 dB, and 63.2 dB and supporting 1024-, 4096-, 16384-, 65536-quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) format, respectively. These results validate that the proposed RL-enabled framework provides online, scalable, and hardware-efficient parameter optimization for DA-RoF fronthaul systems, paving the way toward high-order modulation format and intelligent next-generation radio access networks.

Fully multiplexed photonic tensor computing

Tensor operations dominate modern computational workloads, yet their further acceleration demands hardware platforms with greater parallelism. Although photonic computing provides a compelling route for parallel processing, fully exploiting all native multiplexing dimensions of optical fields is impeded by the challenges in routing and programming light in all dimensions simultaneously. Here we introduce FieldCore, a fully multiplexed photonic tensor core that jointly harnesses wavelength, radio-frequency, guided-mode, time and space dimensions, thereby enabling parallelism to scale multiplicatively within a single optical field. Enabled by inverse-designed silicon photonics, FieldCore preserves a uniform programmed computation across all multiplexed channels in parallel. Experimentally, we validate and benchmark its performance from ultra-high-baudrate arithmetic operations to high-fidelity image convolution and parallel handwritten-digit recognition. We further use FieldCore to unlock applications that naturally require high-dimensional data processing, such as high-dimensional hyperspectral classification and massively parallel mechanical fault diagnosis. Our FieldCore supports an estimated aggregate compute throughput of 69.12 tera operations per second (TOPS) and accommodates up to 1,800 parallel input streams within a single core, establishing a scalable paradigm for fully multiplexed photonic tensor computing and AI inference.

Don't Just Search, Understand: Semantic Path Planning Agent for Spherical Tensegrity Robots in Unknown Environments

Endowed with inherent dynamical properties that grant them remarkable ruggedness and adaptability, spherical tensegrity robots stand as prototypical examples of hybrid softrigid designs and excellent mobile platforms. However, path planning for these robots in unknown environments presents a significant challenge, requiring a delicate balance between efficient exploration and robust planning. Traditional path planners, which treat the environment as a geometric grid, often suffer from redundant searches and are prone to failure in complex scenarios due to their lack of semantic understanding. To overcome these limitations, we reframe path planning in unknown environments as a semantic reasoning task. We introduce a Semantic Agent for Tensegrity robots (SATPlanner) driven by a Large Language Model (LLM). SATPlanner leverages high-level environmental comprehension to generate efficient and reliable planning strategies. At the core of SATPlanner is an Adaptive Observation Window mechanism, inspired by the "fast" and "slow" thinking paradigms of LLMs. This mechanism dynamically adjusts the perceptual field of the agent: it narrows for rapid traversal of open spaces and expands to reason about complex obstacle configurations. This allows the agent to construct a semantic belief of the environment, enabling the search space to grow only linearly with the path length (O(L)) while maintaining path quality. We extensively evaluate SATPlanner in 1,000 simulation trials, where it achieves a 100% success rate, outperforming other real-time planning algorithms. Critically, SATPlanner reduces the search space by 37.2% compared to the A* algorithm while achieving comparable, near-optimal path lengths. Finally, the practical feasibility of SATPlanner is validated on a physical spherical tensegrity robot prototype.

TableMoE: Neuro-Symbolic Routing for Structured Expert Reasoning in Multimodal Table Understanding

Multimodal understanding of tables in real-world contexts is challenging due to the complexity of structure, symbolic density, and visual degradation (blur, skew, watermarking, incomplete structures or fonts, multi-span or hierarchically nested layouts). Existing multimodal large language models (MLLMs) struggle with such WildStruct conditions, resulting in limited performance and poor generalization. To address these challenges, we propose TableMoE, a neuro-symbolic Mixture-of-Connector-Experts (MoCE) architecture specifically designed for robust, structured reasoning over multimodal table data. TableMoE features an innovative Neuro-Symbolic Routing mechanism, which predicts latent semantic token roles (e.g., header, data cell, axis, formula) and dynamically routes table elements to specialized experts (Table-to-HTML, Table-to-JSON, Table-to-Code) using a confidence-aware gating strategy informed by symbolic reasoning graphs. To facilitate effective alignment-driven pretraining, we introduce the large-scale TableMoE-Align dataset, consisting of 1.2M table-HTML-JSON-code quadruples across finance, science, biomedicine and industry, utilized exclusively for model pretraining. For evaluation, we curate and release four challenging WildStruct benchmarks: WMMFinQA, WMMTatQA, WMMTabDialog, and WMMFinanceMath, designed specifically to stress-test models under real-world multimodal degradation and structural complexity. Experimental results demonstrate that TableMoE significantly surpasses existing state-of-the-art models. Extensive ablation studies validate each core component, emphasizing the critical role of Neuro-Symbolic Routing and structured expert alignment. Through qualitative analyses, we further showcase TableMoE's interpretability and enhanced robustness, underscoring the effectiveness of integrating neuro-symbolic reasoning for multimodal table understanding.

Seamless Optical Cloud Computing across Edge-Metro Network for Generative AI

The rapid advancement of generative artificial intelligence (AI) in recent years has profoundly reshaped modern lifestyles, necessitating a revolutionary architecture to support the growing demands for computational power. Cloud computing has become the driving force behind this transformation. However, it consumes significant power and faces computation security risks due to the reliance on extensive data centers and servers in the cloud. Reducing power consumption while enhancing computational scale remains persistent challenges in cloud computing. Here, we propose and experimentally demonstrate an optical cloud computing system that can be seamlessly deployed across edge-metro network. By modulating inputs and models into light, a wide range of edge nodes can directly access the optical computing center via the edge-metro network. The experimental validations show an energy efficiency of 118.6 mW/TOPs (tera operations per second), reducing energy consumption by two orders of magnitude compared to traditional electronic-based cloud computing solutions. Furthermore, it is experimentally validated that this architecture can perform various complex generative AI models through parallel computing to achieve image generation tasks.

Beyond Terabit/s Integrated Neuromorphic Photonic Processor for DSP-Free Optical Interconnects

The rapid expansion of generative AI drives unprecedented demands for high-performance computing. Training large-scale AI models now requires vast interconnected GPU clusters across multiple data centers. Multi-scale AI training and inference demand uniform, ultra-low latency, and energy-efficient links to enable massive GPUs to function as a single cohesive unit. However, traditional electrical and optical interconnects, relying on conventional digital signal processors (DSPs) for signal distortion compensation, increasingly fail to meet these stringent requirements. To overcome these limitations, we present an integrated neuromorphic optical signal processor (OSP) that leverages deep reservoir computing and achieves DSP-free, all-optical, real-time processing. Experimentally, our OSP achieves a 100 Gbaud PAM4 per lane, 1.6 Tbit/s data center interconnect over a 5 km optical fiber in the C-band (equivalent to over 80 km in the O-band), far exceeding the reach of state-of-the-art DSP solutions, which are fundamentally constrained by chromatic dispersion in IMDD systems. Simultaneously, it reduces processing latency by four orders of magnitude and energy consumption by three orders of magnitude. Unlike DSPs, which introduce increased latency at high data rates, our OSP maintains consistent, ultra-low latency regardless of data rate scaling, making it ideal for future optical interconnects. Moreover, the OSP retains full optical field information for better impairment compensation and adapts to various modulation formats, data rates, and wavelengths. Fabricated using a mature silicon photonic process, the OSP can be monolithically integrated with silicon photonic transceivers, enhancing the compactness and reliability of all-optical interconnects. This research provides a highly scalable, energy-efficient, and high-speed solution, paving the way for next-generation AI infrastructure.

Real-Time Burst-Mode Digital Signal Processing for Passive Optical Networks

Driven by the ever-increasing capacity demands, the 50G passive optical network (PON) is maturing gradually. One of the main challenges for the 50G PON is implementing burst-mode digital signal processing (BM-DSP) for the burst upstream signal. In this paper, we demonstrate a real-time BM-DSP for burst reception of 25Gbit/s on-off keying signal to meet the asymmetric-mode 50G PON demand. The real-time BM-DSP includes the BM frequency-domain timing recovery and BM frequency-domain equalizer, which can be fast converged based on the 42ns designed preamble. Meanwhile, the simplified implementations for fast-Fourier-transform, minimum-mean-square-error, and decision-directed least-mean-square-error algorithms decrease the DSP resources by 28.57%, enabling the loading of real-time BM-DSP in the field programmable gate array with the limited DSP resources. The real-time implementation of BM-DSP can guide the design of application-specific integrated circuits for 50G PON.

Edge-guided inverse design of digital metamaterial-based mode multiplexers for high-capacity multi-dimensional interconnect

The escalating demands of compute-intensive applications urgently necessitate the adoption of optical interconnect technologies to overcome bottlenecks in scaling computing systems. This requires fully exploiting the inherent parallelism of light across scalable dimensions for data loading. Here we experimentally demonstrate a synergy of wavelength- and mode- multiplexing combined with high-order modulation formats to achieve multi-tens-of-terabits-per-second optical interconnects using foundry-compatible silicon photonic circuits. Implementing an edge-guided analog-and-digital optimization method that integrates high efficiency with fabrication robustness, we achieve the inverse design of mode multiplexers based on digital metamaterial waveguides. Furthermore, we employ a packaged five-mode multiplexing chip, achieving a single-wavelength interconnect capacity of 1.62 Tbit s-1 and a record-setting multi-dimensional interconnect capacity of 38.2 Tbit s-1 across 5 modes and 88 wavelength channels, with high-order formats up to 8-ary pulse-amplitude-modulation (PAM). This study highlights the transformative potential of optical interconnect technologies to surmount the constraints of electronic links, thus setting the stage for next-generation datacenter and optical compute interconnects.

D-band MUTC Photodiode Module for Ultra-Wideband 160 Gbps Photonics-Assisted Fiber-THz Integrated Communication System

Current wireless communication systems are increasingly constrained by insufficient bandwidth and limited power output, impeding the achievement of ultra-high-speed data transmission. The terahertz (THz) range offers greater bandwidth, but it also imposes higher requirements on broadband and high-power devices. In this work, we present a modified uni-traveling-carrier photodiode (MUTC-PD) module with WR-6 waveguide output for photonics-assisted fiber-THz integrated wireless communications. Through the optimization of the epitaxial structure and high-impedance coplanar waveguide (CPW), the fabricated 6-um-diameter MUTC-PD achieves a high output power of -0.96 dBm at 150 GHz and ultra-flat frequency response at D-band. The MUTC-PD is subsequently packaged into a compact WR-6 module, incorporating planar-circuit-based RF-choke, DC-block and probe. The packaged PD module demonstrates high saturation power and flat frequency responses with minimal power roll-off of only 2 dB over 110-170 GHz. By incorporating the PD module into a fiber-THz integrated communication system, high data rates of up to 160 Gbps with 16 quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) and a maximum symbol transmission rate of 60 Gbaud with QPSK modulation are successfully secured. The demonstration verifies the potential of the PD module for ultra-broadband and ultra-high-speed THz communications, setting a foundation for future research in high-speed data transmission.

HierarchicalContrast: A Coarse-to-Fine Contrastive Learning Framework for Cross-Domain Zero-Shot Slot Filling

In task-oriented dialogue scenarios, cross-domain zero-shot slot filling plays a vital role in leveraging source domain knowledge to learn a model with high generalization ability in unknown target domain where annotated data is unavailable. However, the existing state-of-the-art zero-shot slot filling methods have limited generalization ability in target domain, they only show effective knowledge transfer on seen slots and perform poorly on unseen slots. To alleviate this issue, we present a novel Hierarchical Contrastive Learning Framework (HiCL) for zero-shot slot filling. Specifically, we propose a coarse- to fine-grained contrastive learning based on Gaussian-distributed embedding to learn the generalized deep semantic relations between utterance-tokens, by optimizing inter- and intra-token distribution distance. This encourages HiCL to generalize to the slot types unseen at training phase. Furthermore, we present a new iterative label set semantics inference method to unbiasedly and separately evaluate the performance of unseen slot types which entangled with their counterparts (i.e., seen slot types) in the previous zero-shot slot filling evaluation methods. The extensive empirical experiments on four datasets demonstrate that the proposed method achieves comparable or even better performance than the current state-of-the-art zero-shot slot filling approaches.

Beyond 300Gbps Silicon Microring Modulator with AI Acceleration

Silicon microring modulator (Si-MRM) has become one of the most promising compact modulators to meet the increasing capacity requirements of the next generation optical interconnection. The limited electro-optical (E-O) bandwidth, low modulation efficiency, and inherent modulation nonlinearity are the major factors that limit the Si-MRM modulation speed. To address these issues, we comprehensively optimize the Si-MRM from the device to the modulation and the signal processing. Large modulation bandwidth over 67GHz is achieved in our newly fabricated Si-MRM. Additionally, the laser wavelength and bias voltage of Si-MRM are optimized to significantly improve the modulation performance. Finally, we comprehensively study the theoretical model of modulation nonlinearity in Si-MRM, especially transient nonlinearity. A bidirectional gate recurrent unit (Bi-GRU) neural network with minor modification is applied to compensate for the nonlinear impairments. With all these efforts, we experimentally demonstrate a 302 Gbps Si-MRM-based O-band optical interconnection and achieve 300 Gbps transmission over a 1-km standard single-mode fiber using the discrete multitone modulation format with bit and power loading (BPL-DMT).
