B-model Categorical Enumerative Invariants and holomorphic anomaly equations

In this paper, we study the B-model categorical enumerative invariants (CEI) associated with derived categories of coherent sheaves on smooth projective Calabi-Yau $3$-folds. We first prove the analogs of the dilaton, string, and divisor equations of CEI in a general context. Then we use these equations and the Givental quantization formula to prove that the B-model CEI for any miniversal family of smooth projective Calabi-Yau $3$-folds satisfies the holomorphic anomaly equations introduced by Bershadsky-Cecotti-Ooguri-Vafa. This provides strong evidence that CEI may be taken as a rigorous mathematical definition of the B-model topological string partition function.

On a theorem of Keller over a base ring

Let $X$ be a quasi-compact separated scheme over a base field. Keller proved a theorem stating that the cyclic homology of $X$ is canonically isomorphic to the cyclic homology of the dg category ${\sf Perf}(X)$ consisting of perfect complexes over $X$. This theorem shows the categorical nature of the cyclic homology. In this note, we generalize Keller's theorem to allow $X$ be defined over a base commutative ring.

A remark on the B-model Comparison of Hodge structures

In this note we record a comparison theorem on the B-model variation of semi-infinite Hodge structures. This result is considered a folklore theorem by experts in the field. We only take this opportunity to write it down. Our motivation is to apply it in the study of B-model categorical enumerative invariants.

Effective Categorical Enumerative Invariants

We introduce enumerative invariants $F_{g,n}$ $(g\geq0$, $n \geq 1)$ associated to a cyclic $A_\infty$ algebra and a splitting of its non-commutative Hodge filtration. These invariants are defined by explicitly computable Feynman sums, and encode the same information as Costello's partition function of the corresponding field theory. Our invariants are stable under Morita equivalence, and therefore can be associated to a Calabi-Yau category with splitting data. This justifies the name categorical enumerative invariants (CEI) that we use for them. CEI conjecturally generalize all known enumerative invariants in symplectic geometry, complex geometry, and singularity theory. They also provide a framework for stating enumerative mirror symmetry predictions in arbitrary genus, whenever homological mirror symmetry holds.

On the Morita invariance of Categorical Enumerative Invariants

Categorical Enumerative Invariants (CEI) are invariants associated with a unital, cyclic, smooth $A_\infty$-category and a splitting of its non-commutative Hodge filtration. In this paper, we extend the definition of CEI to Calabi-Yau $A_\infty$-categories with a splitting. Moreover, we formulate and prove the Morita invariance of CEI. As part of our proof, we develop tools to construct unital and cyclic models for Calabi-Yau categories. In particular, we prove a unital version of Kontsevich-Soibelman's Darboux theorem. As an application, we compute CEI in some new examples. Also, when applied to derived categories of coherent sheaves, our results yield new invariants of smooth, proper Calabi-Yau 3-folds.

Categorical enumerative invariants of the ground field

For an $S^1$-framed modular operad $P$, we introduce its "Feynman compactification" denoted by $FP$ which is a modular operad. Let $\{\mathbb{M}^{\sf fr}(g,n)\}_{(g,n)}$ be the $S^1$-framed modular operad defined using moduli spaces of smooth curves with framings along punctures. We prove that the homology operad of $F\mathbb{M}^{\sf fr}$ is isomorphic to $H_*(\overline{M})$, the homology operad of the Deligne-Mumford operad. Using this isomorphism, we obtain an explicit formula of the fundamental class of $[\overline{M}_{g,n}/S_n]$ in terms of Sen-Zwiebach's string vertices. As an immediate application, under mild assumptions, we prove that Costello's categorical enumerative invariants of the ground field match with the Gromov-Witten invariants of a point.

Categorical Enumerative Invariants, II: Givental formula

To a pair $(A,s)$ consisting of a smooth, cyclic $A_\infty$-algebra $A$ and a splitting $s$ of the Hodge filtration on its Hochschild homology Costello (2005) associates an invariant which conjecturally generalizes the total descendant Gromov-Witten potential of a symplectic manifold. In this paper we give explicit, computable formulas for Costello's invariants, as Feynman sums over partially directed stable graphs. The formulas use in a crucial way the combinatorial string vertices defined earlier by Costello and the authors. Explicit computations elsewhere confirm in many cases the equality of categorical invariants with known Gromov-Witten, Fan-Jarvis-Ruan-Witten, and Bershadsky-Cecotti-Ooguri-Vafa invariants.

Categorical Enumerative Invariants, I: String vertices

We define combinatorial counterparts to the geometric string vertices of Sen-Zwiebach and Costello-Zwiebach, which are certain closed subsets of the moduli spaces of curves. Our combinatorial vertices contain the same information as the geometric ones, are effectively computable, and act on the Hochschild chains of a cyclic $A_\infty$-algebra. This is the first in a series of two papers where we define enumerative invariants associated to a pair consisting of a cyclic $A_\infty$-algebra and a splitting of the Hodge filtration on its cyclic homology. These invariants conjecturally generalize the Gromov-Witten and Fan-Jarvis-Ruan-Witten invariants from symplectic geometry, and the Bershadsky-Cecotti-Ooguri-Vafa invariants from holomorphic geometry.

The inverse function theorem for curved L-infinity spaces

In this paper we prove an inverse function theorem in derived differential geometry. More concretely, we show that a morphism of curved $L_\infty$ spaces which is a quasi-isomorphism at a point has a local homotopy inverse. This theorem simultaneously generalizes the inverse function theorem for smooth manifolds and the Whitehead theorem for $L_\infty$ algebras. The main ingredients are the obstruction theory for $L_\infty$ homomorphisms (in the curved setting) and the homotopy transfer theorem for curved $L_\infty$ algebras. Both techniques work in the $A_\infty$ case as well.

Categorical Saito theory, II: Landau-Ginzburg orbifolds

Let $W\in \mathbb{C}[x_1,\cdots,x_N]$ be an invertible polynomial with an isolated singularity at origin, and let $G\subset {{\sf SL}}_N\cap (\mathbb{C}^*)^N$ be a finite diagonal and special linear symmetry group of $W$. In this paper, we use the category ${{\sf MF}}_G(W)$ of $G$-equivariant matrix factorizations and its associated VSHS to construct a $G$-equivariant version of Saito's theory of primitive forms. We prove there exists a canonical categorical primitive form of ${{\sf MF}}_G(W)$ characterized by $G_W^{{\sf max}}$-equivariance. Conjecturally, this $G$-equivariant Saito theory is equivalent to the genus zero part of the FJRW theory under LG/LG mirror symmetry. In the marginal deformation direction, we verify this for the FJRW theory of $\big(\frac{1}{5}(x_1^5+\cdots+x_5^5),\mathbb{Z}/5\mathbb{Z}\big)$ with its mirror dual B-model Landau-Ginzburg orbifold $\big(\frac{1}{5}(x_1^5+\cdots+x_5^5), (\mathbb{Z}/5\mathbb{Z})^4\big)$. In the case of the Quintic family $\mathcal{W}=\frac{1}{5}(x_1^5+\cdots+x_5^5)-\psi x_1x_2x_3x_4x_5$, we also prove a comparison result of B-model VSHS's conjectured by Ganatra-Perutz-Sheridan.

Categorical primitive forms of Calabi-Yau $A_\infty$-categories with semi-simple cohomology

We study categorical primitive forms for Calabi--Yau $A_\infty$ categories with semi-simple Hochschild cohomology. We classify these primitive forms in terms of certain grading operators on the Hochschild homology. We use this result to prove that, if the Fukaya category ${{\sf Fuk}}(M)$ of a symplectic manifold $M$ has semi-simple Hochschild cohomology, then its genus zero Gromov--Witten invariants may be recovered from the $A_\infty$-category ${{\sf Fuk}}(M)$ together with the closed-open map. An immediate corollary of this is that in the semi-simple case, homological mirror symmetry implies enumerative mirror symmetry.

The Bogomolov-Tian-Todorov Theorem Of Cyclic $A_\infty$-Algebras

Let $A$ be a finite-dimensional smooth unital cyclic $A_\infty$-algebra. Assume furthermore that $A$ satisfies the Hodge-to-de-Rham degeneration property. In this short note, we prove the non-commutative analogue of the Bogomolov-Tian-Todorov theorem: the deformation functor associated with the differential graded Lie algebra of Hochschild cochains of $A$ is smooth. Furthermore, the deformation functor associated with the DGLA of cyclic Hochschild cochains of $A$ is also smooth.

Categorical Saito theory, I: A comparison result

In this paper, we present an explicit cyclic minimal $A_\infty$ model for the category of matrix factorizations $\MF(W)$ of an isolated hypersurface singularity. The key observation is to use Kontsevich's deformation quantization technique. Pushing this idea further, we use the Tsygan formality map to obtain a comparison theorem that the categorical Variation of Semi-infinite Hodge Structure of $\MF(W)$ is isomorphic to Saito's original geometric construction in primitive form theory. An immediate corollary of this comparison result is that the analogue of Caldararu's conjecture holds for the category $\MF(W)$.

Categorical primitive forms and Gromov-Witten invariants of $A_n$ singularities

We introduce a categorical analogue of Saito's notion of primitive forms. Let $W$ denote the potential $\frac{1}{n+1} x^{n+1}$. For the category $MF(W)$ of matrix factorizations of $W$ we prove that there exists a unique, up to non-zero constant, categorical primitive form. The corresponding genus zero categorical Gromov-Witten invariants of $MF(W)$ are shown to match with the invariants defined through unfolding of singularities of $W$.

Computing a categorical Gromov-Witten invariant

We compute the $g=1, n=1$ B-model Gromov-Witten invariant of an elliptic curve E directly from the derived category D(E). More precisely, we carry out the computation of the categorical Gromov-Witten invariant defined by Costello using as target a cyclic $A_\infty$ model of D(E) described by Polishchuk. This is the first non-trivial computation of a positive genus categorical Gromov-Witten invariant, and the result agrees with the prediction of mirror symmetry: it matches the classical (non-categorical) Gromov-Witten invariants of a symplectic 2-torus computed by Dijkgraaf.

Homotopy L-infinity spaces and Kuranishi manifolds, I: categorical structures

Motivated by the definition of homotopy $L_\infty$ spaces, we develop a new theory of Kuranishi manifolds, closely related to Joyce's recent theory. We prove that Kuranishi manifolds form a $2$-category with invertible $2$-morphisms, and that certain fiber product property holds in this $2$-category. In a subsequent paper, we construct the virtual fundamental cycle of a compact oriented Kuranishi manifold, and prove some of its basic properties. Manifest from this new formulation is the fact that $[0,1]$-type homotopy $L_\infty$ spaces are naturally Kuranishi manifolds. The former structured spaces naturally appear as derived enhancements of Maurer-Cartan moduli spaces from Chern-Simons type gauge theory. In this way, Kuranishi manifolds theory can be applied to study path integrals in such type of gauge theories.

Casson invariants via virtual counting

This is a research announcement on an alternative definition of the Casson invariants by means of virtual counting of the moduli space of irreducible representations of the fundamental group into $\SU(2)$. Along the way, by using derived differential geometry, we propose a general framework to obtain invariants from Chern-Simons type gauge theories.

Homotopy L-infinity spaces

In this paper, we introduce a new class of structured spaces which is locally modeled by Costello's L-infinity spaces. This provides an alternative approach to study the derived geometric structures in the algebraic, analytic, or smooth category. Our main result asserts that on a compact complex manifold, the moduli space of simple holomorphic structures on a complex vector bundle with a fixed determinant bundle, admits a natural analytic homotopy L-infinity enhancement.
