Distributed Shape Learning of Complex Objects Using Gaussian Kernel

This paper addresses distributed learning of a complex object for multiple networked robots based on distributed optimization and kernel-based support vector machine. In order to overcome a fundamental limitation of polynomial kernels assumed in our antecessor, we employ Gaussian kernel as a kernel function for classification. The Gaussian kernel prohibits the robots to share the function through a finite number of equality constraints due to its infinite dimensionality of the function space. We thus reformulate the optimization problem assuming that the target function space is identified with the space spanned by the bases associated with not the data but a finite number of grid points. The above relaxation is shown to allow the robots to share the function by a finite number of equality constraints. We finally demonstrate the present approach through numerical simulations.

Distributed Coverage Hole Prevention for Visual Environmental Monitoring with Quadcopters via Nonsmooth Control Barrier Functions

This paper proposes a distributed coverage control strategy for quadcopters equipped with downward-facing cameras that prevents the appearance of unmonitored areas in between the quadcopters' fields of view (FOVs). We derive a necessary and sufficient condition for eliminating any unsurveilled area that may arise in between the FOVs among a trio of quadcopters by utilizing a power diagram, i.e. a weighted Voronoi diagram defined by radii of FOVs. Because this condition can be described as logically combined constraints, we leverage nonsmooth control barrier functions (NCBFs) to prevent the appearance of unmonitored areas among a team's FOV. We then investigate the symmetric properties of the proposed NCBFs to develop a distributed algorithm. The proposed algorithm can support the switching of the NCBFs caused by changes of the quadcopters composing trios. The existence of the control input satisfying NCBF conditions is analyzed by employing the characteristics of the power diagram. The proposed framework is synthesized with a coverage control law that maximizes the monitoring quality while reducing overlaps of FOVs. The proposed method is demonstrated in simulation and experiment.

Visual Pursuit Control based on Gaussian Processes with Switched Motion Trajectories

This paper considers a scenario of pursuing a moving target that may switch behaviors due to external factors in a dynamic environment by motion estimation using visual sensors. First, we present an improved Visual Motion Observer with switched Gaussian Process models for an extended class of target motion profiles. We then propose a pursuit control law with an online method to estimate the switching behavior of the target by the GP model uncertainty. Next, we prove ultimate boundedness of the control and estimation errors for the switch in target behavior with high probability. Finally, a Digital Twin simulation demonstrates the effectiveness of the proposed switching estimation and control law to prove applicability to real world scenarios.

Distributed Gaussian Process Based Cooperative Visual Pursuit Control for Drone Networks

In this paper, we propose a control law for camera-equipped drone networks to pursue a target rigid body with unknown motion based on distributed Gaussian process. First, we consider the situation where each drone has its own dataset, and learned the unknown target motion in a distributed manner. Second, we propose a control law using the distributed Gaussian processes, and show that the estimation and control errors are ultimately bounded. Furthermore, the effectiveness of the proposed method is verified by using simulations and experiments with actual drones.

Passivity-Based Decentralized Control of Multi-Robot Systems With Delays Using Control Barrier Functions

In this paper, we present a solution to the problem of coordinating multiple robots across a communication channel that experiences delays. The proposed approach leverages control barrier functions in order to ensure that the multi-robot system remains dissipative. This is achieved by encoding the dissipativity-preserving condition as a set invariance constraint. This constraint is then included in an optimization problem, whose objective is that of modifying, in a minimally invasive fashion, the nominal input to the robots. The formulated optimization problem is decentralized in the sense that, in order to be solved, it does not require the individual robots to have access to global information. Moreover, thanks to its convexity, each robot can solve it using fast and efficient algorithms. The effectiveness of the proposed control framework is demonstrated through the implementation of a formation control algorithm in presence of delays on a team of mobile robots.

Passivity-Based Generalization of Primal-Dual Dynamics for Non-Strictly Convex Cost Functions

In this paper, we revisit primal-dual dynamics for convex optimization and present a generalization of the dynamics based on the concept of passivity. It is then proved that supplying a stable zero to one of the integrators in the dynamics allows one to eliminate the assumption of strict convexity on the cost function based on the passivity paradigm together with the invariance principle for Caratheodory systems. We then show that the present algorithm is also a generalization of existing augmented Lagrangian-based primal-dual dynamics, and discuss the benefit of the present generalization in terms of noise reduction and convergence speed.
