Continuous functions on Berkovich spaces

Let $k$ be a perfect complete valued field with a nontrivial non-archimedean norm $|\cdot|$ and $ω\in k$ with $0<|ω|<1.$ Let $X$ be a reduced and normal $k$-analytic space. Then $O^{\circ}\simeq \lim\limits_{\leftarrow}O^{\circ}/ω^n.$

Surjective endomorphisms of projective surfaces: the existence of infinitely many dense orbits

Let $f \colon X \to X$ be a surjective endomorphism of a normal projective surface. When $\operatorname{deg} f \geq 2$, applying an (iteration of) $f$-equivariant minimal model program (EMMP), we determine the geometric structure of $X$. Using this, we extend the second author's result to singular surfaces to the extent that either $X$ has an $f$-invariant non-constant rational function, or $f$ has infinitely many Zariski-dense forward orbits; this result is also extended to Adelic topology (which is finer than Zariski topology).

Topological entropy of a rational map over a complete metrized field

We prove that the topological entropy of any dominant rational self-map of a projective variety defined over a complete non-Archimedean field is bounded from above by the maximum of its dynamical degrees, thereby extending a theorem of Gromov and Dinh-Sibony from the complex to the non-Archimedean setting. We proceed by proving that any regular self-map which admits a regular extension to a projective model defined over the valuation ring has necessarily zero entropy. To this end we introduce the e-reduction of a Berkovich analytic space, a notion of independent interest.

Algebraicity criteria, invariant subvarities and transcendence problems from arithmetic dynamics

We introduce an algebraicity criteria. It has the following form: under certain conditions, an analytic subvariety of some algebriac variety over a global field $K$, if it contains many $K$-points, then it is algebraic over $K.$ This gives a way to show the transcendence of points via the transcendence of analytic subvarieties. Such a situation often appears when we have a dynamical system, because we can often produce infinitely many points from one point via iterates. Combing this criteria and the study of invariant subvarieties, we get some results on the transcendence in arithmetic dynamics. We get a characterization of products of Böttcher coordinates or products of multiplicative canonical heights for polynomial dynamical pairs to be algebraic. For this, we studied the invariant subvarieties for product of endomorphisms. In particular, we partially generate Medvedev-Scanlon's classification of invariant subvarieties of split polynomial maps to separable endomorphisms on $(\mathbb{P}^1)^N$ in any characteristic. We also get some hight dimensional partial generalization via introducing of a notion of independence. We then study dominant endomorphisms $f$ on $\mathbb{A}^N$ over a number field of algebraic degree $d\geq 2$. We show that in most of the cases (e.g. when such an endomorphism extends to an endomorphism on $\mathbb{P}^N$), there are many analytic curves centered at infinity which are periodic. We show that for most of them, it is algebraic if and only if it contains one algebraic point. We also study the periodic curves. We show that for most of $f$, all periodic curves has degree at most $2$. When $N=2$, we get a more precise classification result. We show that under a condition which is satisfied for a general $f$, if $f$ has infinitely many periodic curves, then $f$ is homogenous up to a changing of origin.

Geometric Bogomolov conjecture in arbitrary characteristics

The goal of this paper is to prove the full geometric Bogomolov conjecture. We first reduce it to the case that the extension of the base fields has transcendence degree 1, and then we prove the later case by intersection theory in algebraic geometry. The proof uses Yamaki's reduction theorem on the geometric Bogomolov conjecture and the Manin--Mumford conjecture proved by Raynaud and Hrushovski.

Remarks on algebraic dynamics in positive characteristic

In this paper, we study arithmetic dynamics in arbitrary characteristic, in particular in positive characteristic. We generalise some basic facts on arithmetic degree and canonical height in positive characteristic. As applications, we prove the dynamical Mordell-Lang conjecture for automorphisms of projective surfaces of positive entropy, the Zariski dense orbit conjecture for automorphisms of projective surfaces and for endomorphisms of projective varieties with large first dynamical degree. We also study ergodic theory for constructible topology. For example, we prove the equidistribution of backward orbits for finite flat endomorphisms with large topological degree. As applications, we give a simple proof for weak dynamical Mordell-Lang and prove a counting result for backward orbits without multiplicities. This gives some applications for equidistributions on Berkovich spaces.

The existence of Zariski dense orbits for endomorphisms of projective surfaces (with an appendix in collaboration with Thomas Tucker)

In this paper we prove the following theorem. Let $f$ be a dominant endomorphism of a smooth projective surface over an algebraically closed field of characteristic $0$. If there is no nonconstant invariant rational function under $f$, then there exists a closed point whose orbit under $f$ is Zariski dense. This result gives us a positive answer to the Zariski dense orbit conjecture proposed by Medvedev and Scanlon, by Amerik, Bogomolov and Rovinsky, and by Zhang, for endomorphisms of smooth projective surfaces. Moreover, we define a new canonical topology on varieties over an algebraically closed field which has finite transcendence degree over $\mathbb{Q}$. We call it the adelic topology. The adelic topology is stronger than the Zariski topology and an irreducible variety is still irreducible in this topology. Using the adelic topology, we propose an adelic verison of the Zariski dense orbit conjecture. This version is stronger then the original one and it quantifies how many such orbits there are. We also proved this adelic version for endomorphisms of smooth projective surfaces. Moreover, we proved the adelic verison of the Zariski dense orbit conjecture for endomorphisms of abelian varieties and split polynomial maps. This yields new proofs for the original version in this two cases. In Appendix A, we study the endomorphisms on the $k$-affinoid spaces. We show that for certain endomorphism $f$ on a $k$-affinoid space $X$, the attractor $Y$ of $f$ is a Zariski closed subset and the dynamics of $f$ semi-conjugates to its restriction on $Y.$ A special case of this result is used in the proof of the main theorem. In Appendix B, written in collaboration with Thomas Tucker, we prove the Zariski dense orbit conjecture for endomorphisms of $(\mathbb{P}^1)^N.$

Three chapters on Cremona groups

In the first part of this article, we answer a question of I. Dolgachev, which is related to the following problem: given a birational map $f\in\mathrm{Bir}(\mathbb{P}^m_\mathbf{k})$ and a linear projective map $A\in\mathrm{PGL}_{m+1}(\mathbf{k})$, when is $A\circ f$ regularizable? Dolgachev's initial question is whether this may happen for all $A$ in $\mathrm{PGL}_{m+1}(\mathbf{k})$, and the answer is negative. We then look at the sequence $n\mapsto\mathrm{deg}\, f^n$, $f\in\mathrm{Bir}(\mathbb{P}^2_\mathbf{k})$. We show that there is no constraint on the sequence $n\mapsto\mathrm{deg}\, f^n-\mathrm{deg}\, f^{n-1}$ for small values of $n$. Finally we study the degree of pencils of curves which are invariant by a birational map. When f is a Halphen or Jonquières twist, we prove that this degree is bounded by a function of $\mathrm{deg}\, f$. We derive corollaries on the structure of conjugacy classes, and their properties with respect to the Zariski topology of $\mathrm{Bir}(\mathbb{P}^2_\mathbf{k})$.

Finiteness properties of pseudo-hyperbolic varieties

Motivated by Lang-Vojta's conjecture, we show that the set of dominant rational self-maps of an algebraic variety over a number field with only finitely many rational points in any given number field is finite by combining Amerik's theorem for dynamical systems of infinite order with properties of Prokhorov-Shramov's notion of quasi-minimal models. We also prove a similar result in the geometric setting by using again Amerik's theorem and Prokhorov-Shramov's notion of quasi-minimal model, but also Weil's regularization theorem for birational self-maps and properties of dynamical degrees. Furthermore, in the geometric setting, we obtain an analogue of Kobayashi-Ochiai's finiteness result for varieties of general type, and thereby generalize Noguchi's theorem (formerly Lang's conjecture).

On degrees of birational mappings

We prove that the degrees of the iterates ${\rm deg}(f^n)$ of a birational map satisfy $\liminf({\rm deg}(f^n))<+\infty$ if and only if the sequence ${\rm deg}(f^n)$ is bounded, and that the growth of ${\rm deg}(f^n)$ can not be arbitrarily slow, unless ${\rm deg}(f^n)$ is bounded.

On Fano manifolds of Picard number one with big automorphism groups

Let $X$ be an $n$-dimensional smooth Fano complex variety of Picard number one. Assume that the VMRT at a general point of $X$ is smooth irreducible and non-degenerate (which holds if $X$ is covered by lines with index $ >(n+2)/2$). It is proven that $\dim \mathfrak{aut}(X) > n(n+1)/2$ if and only if $X$ is isomorphic to $\mathbb{P}^n, \mathbb{Q}^n$ or ${\rm Gr}(2,5)$. Furthermore, the equality $\dim \mathfrak{aut}(X) = n(n+1)/2$ holds only when $X$ is isomorphic to the 6-dimensional Lagrangian Grassmannian ${\rm Lag}(6)$ or a general hyperplane section of ${\rm Gr}(2,5)$.

Algebraic dynamics of the lifts of Frobenius

We study the algbraic dynamics for endomorphisms of projective spaces with coefficients in a p-adic field whose reduction in positive characteritic is the Frobenius. In particular, we prove a version of the dynamical Manin-Mumford conjecture and the dynamical Mordell-Lang conjecture for the coherent backward orbits for such endomorphisms. We also give a new proof of a dynamical version of the Tate-Voloch conjecture in this case. Our method is based on the theory of perfectoid spaces introduced by P. Scholze. In the appendix, we prove that under some technical condition on the field of definition, a dynamical system for a polarized lift of Frobenius on a projective variety can be embedding into a dynamical system for some endomorphism of a projective space.

The Dynamical Mordell-Lang Conjecture for skew-linear self-maps

Let k be an algebraically closed field of characteristic 0, let X=P^1\times A^N and let f be a rational endomorphism of X given by (x,y)--->(g(x), A(x)y), where g is a rational function, while A is an N-by-N matrix with entries in k(x). We prove that if g is of the form x--->ax+b, then each irreducible curve C of X which intersects some orbit of f in infinitely many points must be periodic under the action of f. In the case g is an endomorphism of degree greater than 1, then we prove that each irreducible subvariety Y of X intersecting an orbit of f in a Zariski dense set of points must be periodic as well. Our results provide the desired conclusion in the Dynamical Mordell-Lang Conjecture in a couple new instances. Also, our results have interesting consequences towards a conjecture of Rubel and towards a generalized Skolem-Mahler-Lech problem proposed by Wibmer in the context of difference equations. In the appendix it is shown that the results can also be used to construct Picard-Vessiot extensions in the ring of sequences.

Algebraic dynamics of skew-linear self-maps

Let $X$ be a variety defined over an algebraically closed field $k$ of characteristic $0$, let $N\in\mathbb{N}$, let $g:X\dashrightarrow X$ be a dominant rational self-map, and let $A:\mathbb{A}^N\to \mathbb{A}^N$ be a linear transformation defined over $k(X)$, i.e., for a Zariski open dense subset $U\subset X$, we have that for $x\in U(k)$, the specialization $A(x)$ is an $N$-by-$N$ matrix with entries in $k$. We let $f:X\times\mathbb{A}^N\dashrightarrow X\times \mathbb{A}^N$ be the rational endomorphism given by $(x,y)\mapsto (g(x), A(x)y)$. We prove that if the determinant of $A$ is nonzero and if there exists $x\in X(k)$ such that its orbit $\mathcal{O}_g(x)$ is Zariski dense in $X$, then either there exists a point $z\in (X\times \mathbb{A}^N)(k)$ such that its orbit $\mathcal{O}_f(z)$ is Zariski dense in $X\times \mathbb{A}^N$ or there exists a nonconstant rational function $ψ\in k(X\times \mathbb{A}^N)$ such that $ψ\circ f=ψ$. Our result provides additional evidence to a conjecture of Medvedev and Scanlon.

The existence of Zariski dense orbits for polynomial endomorphisms of the affine plane

In this paper we prove the following theorem. Let $f:\mathbb{A}^2\rightarrow \mathbb{A}^2$ be a dominate polynomial endomorphisms defined over an algebraically closed field $k$ of characteristic $0$. If there are no nonconstant rational function $g:\mathbb{A}^2-rightarrow \mathbb{P}^1$ satisfying $g\circ f=g$, then there exists a point $p\in \mathbb{A}^2(k)$ whose orbit under $f$ is Zariski dense in $\mathbb{A}^2$. This result gives us a positive answer to a conjecture of Amerik, Bogomolov and Rovinsky ( and Zhang) for polynomial endomorphisms on the affine plane.
