Hyperspectral Image Denoising Based On Multi-Stream Denoising Network

Hyperspectral images (HSIs) have been widely applied in many fields, such as military, agriculture, and environment monitoring. Nevertheless, HSIs commonly suffer from various types of noise during acquisition. Therefore, denoising is critical for HSI analysis and applications. In this paper, we propose a novel blind denoising method for HSIs based on Multi-Stream Denoising Network (MSDNet). Our network consists of the noise estimation subnetwork and denoising subnetwork. In the noise estimation subnetwork, a multiscale fusion module is designed to capture the noise from different scales. Then, the denoising subnetwork is utilized to obtain the final denoising image. The proposed MSDNet can obtain robust noise level estimation, which is capable of improving the performance of HSI denoising. Extensive experiments on HSI dataset demonstrate that the proposed method outperforms four closely related methods.

Remote Sensing Image Translation via Style-Based Recalibration Module and Improved Style Discriminator

Existing remote sensing change detection methods are heavily affected by seasonal variation. Since vegetation colors are different between winter and summer, such variations are inclined to be falsely detected as changes. In this letter, we proposed an image translation method to solve the problem. A style-based recalibration module is introduced to capture seasonal features effectively. Then, a new style discriminator is designed to improve the translation performance. The discriminator can not only produce a decision for the fake or real sample, but also return a style vector according to the channel-wise correlations. Extensive experiments are conducted on season-varying dataset. The experimental results show that the proposed method can effectively perform image translation, thereby consistently improving the season-varying image change detection performance. Similarity Transfer for Knowledge Distillation

Knowledge distillation is a popular paradigm for learning portable neural networks by transferring the knowledge from a large model into a smaller one. Most existing approaches enhance the student model by utilizing the similarity information between the categories of instance level provided by the teacher model. However, these works ignore the similarity correlation between different instances that plays an important role in confidence prediction. To tackle this issue, we propose a novel method in this paper, called similarity transfer for knowledge distillation (STKD), which aims to fully utilize the similarities between categories of multiple samples. Furthermore, we propose to better capture the similarity correlation between different instances by the mixup technique, which creates virtual samples by a weighted linear interpolation. Note that, our distillation loss can fully utilize the incorrect classes similarities by the mixed labels. The proposed approach promotes the performance of student model as the virtual sample created by multiple images produces a similar probability distribution in the teacher and student networks. Experiments and ablation studies on several public classification datasets including CIFAR-10,CIFAR-100,CINIC-10 and Tiny-ImageNet verify that this light-weight method can effectively boost the performance of the compact student model. It shows that STKD substantially has outperformed the vanilla knowledge distillation and has achieved superior accuracy over the state-of-the-art knowledge distillation methods.

Class balanced underwater object detection dataset generated by class-wise style augmentation

Underwater object detection technique is of great significance for various applications in underwater the scenes. However, class imbalance issue is still an unsolved bottleneck for current underwater object detection algorithms. It leads to large precision discrepancies among different classes that the dominant classes with more training data achieve higher detection precisions while the minority classes with fewer training data achieves much lower detection precisions. In this paper, we propose a novel class-wise style augmentation (CWSA) algorithm to generate a class-balanced underwater dataset Balance18 from the public contest underwater dataset URPC2018. CWSA is a new kind of data augmentation technique which augments the training data for the minority classes by generating various colors, textures and contrasts for the minority classes. Compare with previous data augmentation algorithms such flipping, cropping and rotations, CWSA is able to generate a class balanced underwater dataset with diverse color distortions and haze-effects.

Associated Spatio-Temporal Capsule Network for Gait Recognition

It is a challenging task to identify a person based on her/his gait patterns. State-of-the-art approaches rely on the analysis of temporal or spatial characteristics of gait, and gait recognition is usually performed on single modality data (such as images, skeleton joint coordinates, or force signals). Evidence has shown that using multi-modality data is more conducive to gait research. Therefore, we here establish an automated learning system, with an associated spatio-temporal capsule network (ASTCapsNet) trained on multi-sensor datasets, to analyze multimodal information for gait recognition. Specifically, we first design a low-level feature extractor and a high-level feature extractor for spatio-temporal feature extraction of gait with a novel recurrent memory unit and a relationship layer. Subsequently, a Bayesian model is employed for the decision-making of class labels. Extensive experiments on several public datasets (normal and abnormal gait) validate the effectiveness of the proposed ASTCapsNet, compared against several state-of-the-art methods.

Multimodal Gait Recognition for Neurodegenerative Diseases

In recent years, single modality based gait recognition has been extensively explored in the analysis of medical images or other sensory data, and it is recognised that each of the established approaches has different strengths and weaknesses. As an important motor symptom, gait disturbance is usually used for diagnosis and evaluation of diseases; moreover, the use of multi-modality analysis of the patient's walking pattern compensates for the one-sidedness of single modality gait recognition methods that only learn gait changes in a single measurement dimension. The fusion of multiple measurement resources has demonstrated promising performance in the identification of gait patterns associated with individual diseases. In this paper, as a useful tool, we propose a novel hybrid model to learn the gait differences between three neurodegenerative diseases, between patients with different severity levels of Parkinson's disease and between healthy individuals and patients, by fusing and aggregating data from multiple sensors. A spatial feature extractor (SFE) is applied to generating representative features of images or signals. In order to capture temporal information from the two modality data, a new correlative memory neural network (CorrMNN) architecture is designed for extracting temporal features. Afterwards, we embed a multi-switch discriminator to associate the observations with individual state estimations. Compared with several state-of-the-art techniques, our proposed framework shows more accurate classification results.

Perceptual underwater image enhancement with deep learning and physical priors

Underwater image enhancement, as a pre-processing step to improve the accuracy of the following object detection task, has drawn considerable attention in the field of underwater navigation and ocean exploration. However, most of the existing underwater image enhancement strategies tend to consider enhancement and detection as two independent modules with no interaction, and the practice of separate optimization does not always help the underwater object detection task. In this paper, we propose two perceptual enhancement models, each of which uses a deep enhancement model with a detection perceptor. The detection perceptor provides coherent information in the form of gradients to the enhancement model, guiding the enhancement model to generate patch level visually pleasing images or detection favourable images. In addition, due to the lack of training data, a hybrid underwater image synthesis model, which fuses physical priors and data-driven cues, is proposed to synthesize training data and generalise our enhancement model for real-world underwater images. Experimental results show the superiority of our proposed method over several state-of-the-art methods on both real-world and synthetic underwater datasets.

3D Facial Geometry Recovery from a Depth View with Attention Guided Generative Adversarial Network

We present to recover the complete 3D facial geometry from a single depth view by proposing an Attention Guided Generative Adversarial Networks (AGGAN). In contrast to existing work which normally requires two or more depth views to recover a full 3D facial geometry, the proposed AGGAN is able to generate a dense 3D voxel grid of the face from a single unconstrained depth view. Specifically, AGGAN encodes the 3D facial geometry within a voxel space and utilizes an attention-guided GAN to model the illposed 2.5D depth-3D mapping. Multiple loss functions, which enforce the 3D facial geometry consistency, together with a prior distribution of facial surface points in voxel space are incorporated to guide the training process. Both qualitative and quantitative comparisons show that AGGAN recovers a more complete and smoother 3D facial shape, with the capability to handle a much wider range of view angles and resist to noise in the depth view than conventional methods

Real-time 3D Facial Tracking via Cascaded Compositional Learning

We propose to learn a cascade of globally-optimized modular boosted ferns (GoMBF) to solve multi-modal facial motion regression for real-time 3D facial tracking from a monocular RGB camera. GoMBF is a deep composition of multiple regression models with each is a boosted ferns initially trained to predict partial motion parameters of the same modality, and then concatenated together via a global optimization step to form a singular strong boosted ferns that can effectively handle the whole regression target. It can explicitly cope with the modality variety in output variables, while manifesting increased fitting power and a faster learning speed comparing against the conventional boosted ferns. By further cascading a sequence of GoMBFs (GoMBF-Cascade) to regress facial motion parameters, we achieve competitive tracking performance on a variety of in-the-wild videos comparing to the state-of-the-art methods, which require much more training data or have higher computational complexity. It provides a robust and highly elegant solution to real-time 3D facial tracking using a small set of training data and hence makes it more practical in real-world applications.

A Benchmark dataset for both underwater image enhancement and underwater object detection

Underwater image enhancement is such an important vision task due to its significance in marine engineering and aquatic robot. It is usually work as a pre-processing step to improve the performance of high level vision tasks such as underwater object detection. Even though many previous works show the underwater image enhancement algorithms can boost the detection accuracy of the detectors, no work specially focus on investigating the relationship between these two tasks. This is mainly because existing underwater datasets lack either bounding box annotations or high quality reference images, based on which detection accuracy or image quality assessment metrics are calculated. To investigate how the underwater image enhancement methods influence the following underwater object detection tasks, in this paper, we provide a large-scale underwater object detection dataset with both bounding box annotations and high quality reference images, namely OUC dataset. The OUC dataset provides a platform for researchers to comprehensive study the influence of underwater image enhancement algorithms on the underwater object detection task.

Progressively Unfreezing Perceptual GAN

Generative adversarial networks (GANs) are widely used in image generation tasks, yet the generated images are usually lack of texture details. In this paper, we propose a general framework, called Progressively Unfreezing Perceptual GAN (PUPGAN), which can generate images with fine texture details. Particularly, we propose an adaptive perceptual discriminator with a pre-trained perceptual feature extractor, which can efficiently measure the discrepancy between multi-level features of the generated and real images. In addition, we propose a progressively unfreezing scheme for the adaptive perceptual discriminator, which ensures a smooth transfer process from a large scale classification task to a specified image generation task. The qualitative and quantitative experiments with comparison to the classical baselines on three image generation tasks, i.e. single image super-resolution, paired image-to-image translation and unpaired image-to-image translation demonstrate the superiority of PUPGAN over the compared approaches.

Few-shot Learning for Domain-specific Fine-grained Image Classification

Learning to recognize novel visual categories from a few examples is a challenging task for machines in real-world industrial applications. In contrast, humans have the ability to discriminate even similar objects with little supervision. This paper attempts to address the few shot fine-grained image classification problem. We propose a feature fusion model to explore discriminative features by focusing on key regions. The model utilizes the focus area location mechanism to discover the perceptually similar regions among objects. High-order integration is employed to capture the interaction information among intra-parts. We also design a Center Neighbor Loss to form robust embedding space distributions. Furthermore, we build a typical fine-grained and few-shot learning dataset miniPPlankton from the real-world application in the area of marine ecological environments. Extensive experiments are carried out to validate the performance of our method. The results demonstrate that our model achieves competitive performance compared with state-of-the-art models. Our work is a valuable complement to the model domain-specific industrial applications.

Underwater object detection using Invert Multi-Class Adaboost with deep learning

In recent years, deep learning based methods have achieved promising performance in standard object detection. However, these methods lack sufficient capabilities to handle underwater object detection due to these challenges: (1) Objects in real applications are usually small and their images are blurry, and (2) images in the underwater datasets and real applications accompany heterogeneous noise. To address these two problems, we first propose a novel neural network architecture, namely Sample-WeIghted hyPEr Network (SWIPENet), for small object detection. SWIPENet consists of high resolution and semantic rich Hyper Feature Maps which can significantly improve small object detection accuracy. In addition, we propose a novel sample-weighted loss function which can model sample weights for SWIPENet, which uses a novel sample re-weighting algorithm, namely Invert Multi-Class Adaboost (IMA), to reduce the influence of noise on the proposed SWIPENet. Experiments on two underwater robot picking contest datasets URPC2017 and URPC2018 show that the proposed SWIPENet+IMA framework achieves better performance in detection accuracy against several state-of-the-art object detection approaches.

High-Order Paired-ASPP Networks for Semantic Segmenation

Current semantic segmentation models only exploit first-order statistics, while rarely exploring high-order statistics. However, common first-order statistics are insufficient to support a solid unanimous representation. In this paper, we propose High-Order Paired-ASPP Network to exploit high-order statistics from various feature levels. The network first introduces a High-Order Representation module to extract the contextual high-order information from all stages of the backbone. They can provide more semantic clues and discriminative information than the first-order ones. Besides, a Paired-ASPP module is proposed to embed high-order statistics of the early stages into the last stage. It can further preserve the boundary-related and spatial context in the low-level features for final prediction. Our experiments show that the high-order statistics significantly boost the performance on confusing objects. Our method achieves competitive performance without bells and whistles on three benchmarks, i.e, Cityscapes, ADE20K and Pascal-Context with the mIoU of 81.6%, 45.3% and 52.9%.

Multi-level Similarity Learning for Low-Shot Recognition

Low-shot learning indicates the ability to recognize unseen objects based on very limited labeled training samples, which simulates human visual intelligence. According to this concept, we propose a multi-level similarity model (MLSM) to capture the deep encoded distance metric between the support and query samples. Our approach is achieved based on the fact that the image similarity learning can be decomposed into image-level, global-level, and object-level. Once the similarity function is established, MLSM will be able to classify images for unseen classes by computing the similarity scores between a limited number of labeled samples and the target images. Furthermore, we conduct 5-way experiments with both 1-shot and 5-shot setting on Caltech-UCSD datasets. It is demonstrated that the proposed model can achieve promising results compared with the existing methods in practical applications.

Highlight Every Step: Knowledge Distillation via Collaborative Teaching

High storage and computational costs obstruct deep neural networks to be deployed on resource-constrained devices. Knowledge distillation aims to train a compact student network by transferring knowledge from a larger pre-trained teacher model. However, most existing methods on knowledge distillation ignore the valuable information among training process associated with training results. In this paper, we provide a new Collaborative Teaching Knowledge Distillation (CTKD) strategy which employs two special teachers. Specifically, one teacher trained from scratch (i.e., scratch teacher) assists the student step by step using its temporary outputs. It forces the student to approach the optimal path towards the final logits with high accuracy. The other pre-trained teacher (i.e., expert teacher) guides the student to focus on a critical region which is more useful for the task. The combination of the knowledge from two special teachers can significantly improve the performance of the student network in knowledge distillation. The results of experiments on CIFAR-10, CIFAR-100, SVHN and Tiny ImageNet datasets verify that the proposed knowledge distillation method is efficient and achieves state-of-the-art performance.

Combining SLAM with muti-spectral photometric stereo for real-time dense 3D reconstruction

Obtaining dense 3D reconstrution with low computational cost is one of the important goals in the field of SLAM. In this paper we propose a dense 3D reconstruction framework from monocular multispectral video sequences using jointly semi-dense SLAM and Multispectral Photometric Stereo approaches. Starting from multispectral video, SALM (a) reconstructs a semi-dense 3D shape that will be densified;(b) recovers relative sparse depth map that is then fed as prioris into optimization-based multispectral photometric stereo for a more accurate dense surface normal recovery;(c)obtains camera pose that is subsequently used for conversion of view in the process of fusion where we combine the relative sparse point cloud with the dense surface normal using the automated cross-scale fusion method proposed in this paper to get a dense point cloud with subtle texture information. Experiments show that our method can effectively obtain denser 3D reconstructions.

Cascade one-vs-rest detection network for fine-grained recognition without part annotations

Fine-grained recognition is a challenging task due to the small intra-category variances. Most of top-performing fine-grained recognition methods leverage parts of objects for better performance. Therefore, part annotations which are extremely computationally expensive are required. In this paper, we propose a novel cascaded deep CNN detection framework for fine-grained recognition which is trained to detect the whole object without considering parts. Nevertheless, most of current top-performing detection networks use the N+1 class (N object categories plus background) softmax loss, and the background category with much more training samples dominates the feature learning progress so that the features are not good for object categories with fewer samples. To bridge this gap, we introduce a cascaded structure to eliminate background and exploit a one-vs-rest loss to capture more minute variances among different subordinate categories. Experiments show that our proposed recognition framework achieves comparable performance with state-of-the-art, part-free, fine-grained recognition methods on the CUB-200-2011 Bird dataset. Moreover, our method even outperforms most of part-based methods while does not need part annotations at the training stage and is free from any annotations at test stage.
