TransRefer3D: Entity-and-Relation Aware Transformer for Fine-Grained 3D Visual Grounding

Recently proposed fine-grained 3D visual grounding is an essential and challenging task, whose goal is to identify the 3D object referred by a natural language sentence from other distractive objects of the same category. Existing works usually adopt dynamic graph networks to indirectly model the intra/inter-modal interactions, making the model difficult to distinguish the referred object from distractors due to the monolithic representations of visual and linguistic contents. In this work, we exploit Transformer for its natural suitability on permutation-invariant 3D point clouds data and propose a TransRefer3D network to extract entity-and-relation aware multimodal context among objects for more discriminative feature learning. Concretely, we devise an Entity-aware Attention (EA) module and a Relation-aware Attention (RA) module to conduct fine-grained cross-modal feature matching. Facilitated by co-attention operation, our EA module matches visual entity features with linguistic entity features while RA module matches pair-wise visual relation features with linguistic relation features, respectively. We further integrate EA and RA modules into an Entity-and-Relation aware Contextual Block (ERCB) and stack several ERCBs to form our TransRefer3D for hierarchical multimodal context modeling. Extensive experiments on both Nr3D and Sr3D datasets demonstrate that our proposed model significantly outperforms existing approaches by up to 10.6% and claims the new state-of-the-art. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first work investigating Transformer architecture for fine-grained 3D visual grounding task.

FedSiam: Towards Adaptive Federated Semi-Supervised Learning

Federated learning (FL) has emerged as an effective technique to co-training machine learning models without actually sharing data and leaking privacy. However, most existing FL methods focus on the supervised setting and ignore the utilization of unlabeled data. Although there are a few existing studies trying to incorporate unlabeled data into FL, they all fail to maintain performance guarantees or generalization ability in various real-world settings. In this paper, we focus on designing a general framework FedSiam to tackle different scenarios of federated semi-supervised learning, including four settings in the labels-at-client scenario and two setting in the labels-at-server scenario. FedSiam is built upon a siamese network into FL with a momentum update to handle the non-IID challenges introduced by unlabeled data. We further propose a new metric to measure the divergence of local model layers within the siamese network. Based on the divergence, FedSiam can automatically select layer-level parameters to be uploaded to the server in an adaptive manner. Experimental results on three datasets under two scenarios with different data distribution settings demonstrate that the proposed FedSiam framework outperforms state-of-the-art baselines.

SparseTrain: Exploiting Dataflow Sparsity for Efficient Convolutional Neural Networks Training

Training Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) usually requires a large number of computational resources. In this paper, \textit{SparseTrain} is proposed to accelerate CNN training by fully exploiting the sparsity. It mainly involves three levels of innovations: activation gradients pruning algorithm, sparse training dataflow, and accelerator architecture. By applying a stochastic pruning algorithm on each layer, the sparsity of back-propagation gradients can be increased dramatically without degrading training accuracy and convergence rate. Moreover, to utilize both \textit{natural sparsity} (resulted from ReLU or Pooling layers) and \textit{artificial sparsity} (brought by pruning algorithm), a sparse-aware architecture is proposed for training acceleration. This architecture supports forward and back-propagation of CNN by adopting 1-Dimensional convolution dataflow. We have built %a simple compiler to map CNNs topology onto \textit{SparseTrain}, and a cycle-accurate architecture simulator to evaluate the performance and efficiency based on the synthesized design with $14nm$ FinFET technologies. Evaluation results on AlexNet/ResNet show that \textit{SparseTrain} could achieve about $2.7 \times$ speedup and $2.2 \times$ energy efficiency improvement on average compared with the original training process.

Accelerating CNN Training by Pruning Activation Gradients

Sparsification is an efficient approach to accelerate CNN inference, but it is challenging to take advantage of sparsity in training procedure because the involved gradients are dynamically changed. Actually, an important observation shows that most of the activation gradients in back-propagation are very close to zero and only have a tiny impact on weight-updating. Hence, we consider pruning these very small gradients randomly to accelerate CNN training according to the statistical distribution of activation gradients. Meanwhile, we theoretically analyze the impact of pruning algorithm on the convergence. The proposed approach is evaluated on AlexNet and ResNet-\{18, 34, 50, 101, 152\} with CIFAR-\{10, 100\} and ImageNet datasets. Experimental results show that our training approach could substantially achieve up to $5.92 \times$ speedups at back-propagation stage with negligible accuracy loss.

Learning Inverse Mapping by Autoencoder based Generative Adversarial Nets

The inverse mapping of GANs'(Generative Adversarial Nets) generator has a great potential value.Hence, some works have been developed to construct the inverse function of generator by directly learning or adversarial learning. While the results are encouraging, the problem is highly challenging and the existing ways of training inverse models of GANs have many disadvantages, such as hard to train or poor performance.Due to these reasons, we propose a new approach based on using inverse generator ($IG$) model as encoder and pre-trained generator ($G$) as decoder of an AutoEncoder network to train the $IG$ model. In the proposed model, the difference between the input and output, which are both the generated image of pre-trained GAN's generator, of AutoEncoder is directly minimized. The optimizing method can overcome the difficulty in training and inverse model of an non one-to-one function. We also applied the inverse model of GANs' generators to image searching and translation. The experimental results prove that the proposed approach works better than the traditional approaches in image searching.
