Formation of Massive Protostellar Clusters -- Observations of Massive 70 $μ$m Dark Molecular Clouds

We present Submillimeter Array (SMA) observations of seven massive molecular clumps which are dark in the far-infrared for wavelengths up to 70 $μ$m. Our 1.3 mm continuum images reveal 44 dense cores, with gas masses ranging from 1.4 to 77.1 M$_{\odot}$. Twenty-nine dense cores have masses greater than 8 M$_{\odot}$ and the other fifteen dense cores have masses between 1.4 and 7.5 M$_{\odot}$. Assuming the core density follows a power-law in radius $ρ\propto r^{-b}$, the index $b$ is found to be between 0.6 and 2.1 with a mean value of 1.3. The virial analysis reveals that the dense cores are not in virial equilibrium. CO outflow emission was detected toward 6 out of 7 molecular clumps and associated with 17 dense cores. For five of these cores, CO emissions appear to have line-wings at velocities of greater than 30 km s$^{-1}$ with respect to the source systemic velocity, which indicates that most of the clumps harbor protostars and thus are not quiescent in star formation. The estimated outflow timescale increase with core mass, which likely indicates that massive cores have longer accretion timescale than that of the less massive ones. The fragmentation analysis shows that the mass of low-mass and massive cores are roughly consistent with thermal and turbulent Jeans masses, respectively.

Carbon-Chain Molecules in Molecular Outflows and Lupus I Region--New Producing Region and New Forming Mechanism

Using the new equipment of the Shanghai Tian Ma Radio Telescope, we have searched for carbon-chain molecules (CCMs) towards five outflow sources and six Lupus I starless dust cores, including one region known to be characterized by warm carbon-chain chemistry (WCCC), Lupus I-1 (IRAS 15398-3359), and one TMC-1 like cloud, Lupus I-6 (Lupus-1A). Lines of HC3N J=2-1, HC5N J=6-5, HC7N J=14-13, 15-14, 16-15 and C3S J=3-2 were detected in all the targets except in the outflow source L1660 and the starless dust core Lupus I-3/4. The column densities of nitrogen-bearing species range from 10$^{12}$ to 10$^{14}$ cm$^{-2}$ and those of C$_3$S are about 10$^{12}$ cm$^{-2}$. Two outflow sources, I20582+7724 and L1221, could be identified as new carbon-chain--producing regions. Four of the Lupus I dust cores are newly identified as early quiescent and dark carbon-chain--producing regions similar to Lup I-6, which together with the WCCC source, Lup I-1, indicate that carbon-chain-producing regions are popular in Lupus I which can be regard as a Taurus like molecular cloud complex in our Galaxy. The column densities of C3S are larger than those of HC7N in the three outflow sources I20582, L1221 and L1251A. Shocked carbon-chain chemistry (SCCC) is proposed to explain the abnormal high abundances of C3S compared with those of nitrogen-bearing CCMs. Gas-grain chemical models support the idea that shocks can fuel the environment of those sources with enough $S^+$ thus driving the generation of S-bearing CCMs.

A particular carbon-chain-producing region: L1489 starless core

We detected carbon-chain molecules (CCMs) HC2n+1N (n=1-3) and C3S in Ku band as well as {high-energy excitation lines including C4H N=9-8, J=17/2-15/2, 19/2-17/2, and CH3CCH J=5-4, K=2 in the 3 mm band toward a starless core called the eastern molecular core (EMC) of L1489 IRS. Maps of all the observed lines were also obtained. Comparisons with a number of early starless cores and WCCC source L1527 show that the column densities of C4H and CH3CCH are close to those of L1527, and the CH3CCH column densities of the EMC and L1527 are slightly higher than those of TMC-1. The EMC and L1527 have similar C3S column densities, but they are much lower than those of all the starless cores, with only 6.5% and 10% of the TMC-1 value, respectively. The emissions of the N-bearing species of the EMC and L1527 are at the medium level of the starless cores. These comparisons show that the CCM emissions in the EMC are similar to those of L1527, though L1527 contains a protostar. Although dark and quiescent, the EMC is warmer and at a later evolutionary stage than classical carbon-chain--producing regions in the cold, dark, quiescent early phase. The PACS, SPIRE, and SCUBA maps evidently show that the L1489 IRS seems to be the heating source of the EMC. Although it is located at the margins of the EMC, its bolometric luminosity and bolometric temperature are relatively high. Above all, the EMC is a rather particular carbon-chain-producing region and is quite significant for CCM science.

A SiO J = 5 - 4 Survey Toward Massive Star Formation Regions

We performed a survey in the SiO $J=5\rightarrow4$ line toward a sample of 199 Galactic massive star-forming regions at different evolutionary stages with the SMT 10 m and CSO 10.4 m telescopes. The sample consists of 44 infrared dark clouds (IRDCs), 86 protostellar candidates, and 69 young \HII\ regions. We detected SiO $J=5\rightarrow4$ line emission in 102 sources, with a detection rate of 57\%, 37\%, and 65\% for IRDCs, protostellar candidates, and young \HII\ regions, respectively. We find both broad line with Full Widths at Zero Power (FWZP) $>$ 20 \kms and narrow line emissons of SiO in objects at various evolutionary stages, likely associated with high-velocity shocks and low-velocity shocks, respectively. The SiO luminosities do not show apparent differences among various evolutionary stages in our sample. We find no correlation between the SiO abundance and the luminosity-to-mass ratio, indicating that the SiO abundance does not vary significantly in regions at different evolutionary stages of star formation.

Millimeter line observations toward four local galaxies

We present results of millimeter line observations toward four local gas-rich galaxies (NGC 3079, NGC 4258, NGC 6240 and VII Zw 31) with the IRAM 30 meter millimeter telescope. More than 33 lines in these four sources were detected, including normal dense gas tracers (HCN 1-0, HCO$^+$ 1-0, and C$_2$H 1-0, etc) and their isotopic species. H$^{13}$CN (1-0) and H$^{13}$CO$^+$ (1-0) are detected for the first time in NGC 4258. Optical depths of HCN 1-0 and HCO$^{+}$ 1-0 were estimated with detected isotopic lines in NGC 4258, which were 4.1 and 2.6, respectively. HC$_3$N $J=29-28$, which requires high volume density and high temperature to excite, was detected in NGC 6240. High ratios of HCO$^+$/HCN in NGC 4258 and NGC 6240 imply that this ratio might not be a perfect diagnostic tool between AGN and starburst environments, due to contamination/combination of both processes. The low HC$_3$N/HCN line ratios with less than 0.15 in NGC 4258, NGC 6240 and the non-detection of HC$_3$N line in NGC 3079 and VII Zw 31 indicates that these four galaxies are HC$_3$N-poor galaxies. The variation of fractional abundance of CN in different types of galaxies is large.

Re-visiting the extended Schmidt law: the important role of existing stars in regulating star formation

We revisit the proposed extended Schmidt law (Shi et al. 2011) which points that the star formation efficiency in galaxies depends on the stellar mass surface density, by investigating spatially-resolved star formation rates (SFRs), gas masses and stellar masses of star formation regions in a vast range of galactic environments, from the outer disks of dwarf galaxies to spiral disks and to merging galaxies as well as individual molecular clouds in M33. We find that these regions are distributed in a tight power-law as Sigma_SFR ~(Sigma_star^0.5 Sigma_gas )^1.09, which is also valid for the integrated measurements of disk and merging galaxies at high-z. Interestingly, we show that star formation regions in the outer disks of dwarf galaxies with Sigma_SFR down to 10^(-5) Msun/yr/kpc^2, which are outliers of both Kennicutt-Schmidt and Silk-Elmegreen law, also follow the extended Schmidt law. Other outliers in the Kennicutt-Schmidt law, such as extremely-metal poor star-formation regions, also show significantly reduced deviations from the extended Schmidt law. These results suggest an important role for existing stars in helping to regulate star formation through the effect of their gravity on the mid-plane pressure in a wide range of galactic environments.

Widespread Presence of Glycolaldehyde and Ethylene Glycol Around Sagittarius B2

We report the detection of widespread CH$_2$OHCHO and HOCH$_2$CH$_2$OH emission in Galactic center giant molecular cloud Sagittarius B2 using the Shanghai Tianma 65m Radio Telescope. Our observations show for the first time that the spatial distribution of these two important prebiotic molecules extends over 15 arc-minutes, corresponding to a linear size of approximately 36 pc. These two molecules are not just distributed in or near the hot cores. The abundance of these two molecules seems to decrease from the cold outer region to the central region associated with star-formation activity. Results present here suggest that these two molecules are likely to form through a low temperature process. Recent theoretical and experimental studies demonstrated that prebiotic molecules can be efficiently formed in icy grain mantles through several pathways. However, these complex ice features cannot be directly observed, and most constraints on the ice compositions come from millimeter observations of desorbed ice chemistry products. These results, combined with laboratory studies, strongly support the existence of abundant prebiotic molecules in ices.

The dependence of the IR-radio correlation on the metallicity

We have compiled a sample of 26 metal-poor galaxies with 12 + log(O/H) < 8.1 with both infrared continuum and 1.4 GHz radio continuum data. By comparing to galaxies at higher metallicity, we have investigated the dependence on the metallicity of the IR-radio relationship at 24 um, 70 um, 100 um and 160 um bands as well as the integrated FIR luminosity. It is found that metal-poor galaxies have on average lower qIR than metal-rich ones with larger offsets at longer IR wavelengths, from -0.06 dex in q24um to -0.6 dex in q160um. The qIR of all galaxies as a whole at 160 um show positive trends with the metallicity and IR-to-FUV ratio, and negative trends with the IR color, while those at lower IR wavelengths show weaker correlations. We proposed a mechanism that invokes combined effects of low obscured-SFR/total-SFR fraction and warm dust temperature at low metallicity to interpret the above behavior of qIR, with the former reducing the IR radiation and the latter further reducing the IR emission at longer IR wavelength. Other mechanisms that are related to the radio emission including the enhanced magnetic field strength and increased thermal radio contribution are unable to reconcile the IR-wavelength-dependent differences of qIR between metal-poor and metal- rich galaxies. In contrast to qIR, the mean total-SFR/radio ratio of metal-poor galaxies is the same as the metal-rich one, indicating the 1.4 GHz radio emission is still an effective tracer of SFRs at low metallicity.

Large-Scale Spectroscopic Mapping of the $ρ$ Ophiuchi Molecular Cloud Complex I. The C$_{2}$H to N$_2$H$^+$ Ratio as a Signpost of Cloud Characteristics

We present 2.5-square-degree C$_{2}$H N=1-0 and N$_2$H$^+$ J=1-0 maps of the $ρ$ Ophiuchi molecular cloud complex. These are the first large-scale maps of the $ρ$ Ophiuchi molecular cloud complex with these two tracers. The C$_{2}$H emission is spatially more extended than the N$_2$H$^+$ emission. One faint N$_2$H$^+$ clump Oph-M and one C$_{2}$H ring Oph-RingSW are identified for the first time. The observed C$_{2}$H to N$_{2}$H$^{+}$ abundance ratio ([C$_{2}$H]/[N$_{2}$H$^{+}$]) varies between 5 and 110. We modeled the C$_{2}$H and N$_2$H$^+$ abundances with 1-D chemical models which show a clear decline of [C$_2$H]/[N$_2$H$^+$] with chemical age. Such an evolutionary trend is little affected by temperatures when they are below 40 K. At high density (n$_H$ $>$ 10$^5$ cm$^{-3}$), however, the time it takes for the abundance ratio to drop at least one order of magnitude becomes less than the dynamical time (e.g., turbulence crossing time $\rm \sim$10$^5$ years). The observed [C$_2$H]/[N$_2$H$^+$] difference between L1688 and L1689 can be explained by L1688 having chemically younger gas in relatively less dense regions. The observed [C$_{2}$H]/[N$_{2}$H$^{+}$] values are the results of time evolution, accelerated at higher densities. For the relative low density regions in L1688 where only C$_2$H emission was detected, the gas should be chemically younger.

Carbon monoxide in an extremely metal-poor galaxy

Extremely metal-poor galaxies with metallicity below 10% of the solar value in the local universe are the best analogues to investigating the interstellar medium at a quasi-primitive environment in the early universe. In spite of the ongoing formation of stars in these galaxies, the presence of molecular gas (which is known to provide the material reservoir for star formation in galaxies, such as our Milky Way) remains unclear. Here, we report the detection of carbon monoxide (CO), the primary tracer of molecular gas, in a galaxy with 7% solar metallicity, with additional detections in two galaxies at higher metallicities. Such detections offer direct evidence for the existence of molecular gas in these galaxies that contain few metals. Using archived infrared data, it is shown that the molecular gas mass per CO luminosity at extremely low metallicity is approximately one-thousand times the Milky Way value.

Millimeter Spectral Line Mapping Observations Toward Four Massive Star Forming HII Regions

We present spectral line mapping observations toward four massive star-forming regions (Cepheus A, DR21S, S76E and G34.26+0.15), with the IRAM 30 meter telescope at 2 mm and 3 mm bands. Totally 396 spectral lines from 51 molecules, one helium recombination line, ten hydrogen recombination lines, and 16 unidentified lines were detected in these four sources. An emission line of nitrosyl cyanide (ONCN, 14$_{0,14}$-13$_{0,13}$) was detected in G34.26+0.15, as first detection in massive star-forming regions. We found that the $c$-C$_{3}$H$_{2}$ and NH$_{2}$D show enhancement in shocked regions as suggested by evidences of SiO and/or SO emission. Column density and rotational temperature of CH$_{3}$CN were estimated with the rotational diagram method for all four sources. Isotope abundance ratios of $^{12}$C/$^{13}$C were derived using HC$_{3}$N and its $^{13}$C isotopologue, which were around 40 in all four massive star-forming regions and slightly lower than the local interstellar value ($\sim$65). $^{14}$N/$^{15}$N and $^{16}$O/$^{18}$O abundance ratios in these sources were also derived using double isotopic method, which were slightly lower than that in local interstellar medium. Except for Cep A, $^{33}$S/$^{34}$S ratio in the other three targets were derived, which were similar to that in the local interstellar medium. The column density ratios of N(DCN)/N(HCN) and N(DCO$^{+}$)/N(HCO$^{+}$) in these sources were more than two orders of magnitude higher than the elemental [D]/[H] ratio, which is 1.5$\times$10$ ^{-5}$. Our results show the later stage sources, G34.26+0.15 in particular, present more molecular species than earlier stage ones. Evidence of shock activity is seen in all stages studied.

TMRT Observations of Carbon-chain molecules in Serpens South 1A

We report Shanghai Tian Ma Radio Telescope detections of several long carbon-chain molecules at C and Ku band, including HC3N, HC5N, HC7N, HC9N, C3S, C6H and C8H toward the starless cloud Serpens South 1a. We detected some transitions (HC9N J=13-12 F=12-11 and F=14-13, H13CCCN J=2-1 F=1-0 and F=1-1, HC13CCN J=2-1 F=2-2, F=1-0 and F=1-1, HCC13CN J=2-1 F=1-0 and F=1-1) and resolved some hyperfine components (HC5N J=6-5 F=5-4, H13CCCN J=2-1 F=2-1) for the first time in the interstellar medium. The column densities of these carbon-chain molecules in a range of 10^{12}-10^{13} cm^{-2} are comparable to two carbon-chain molecule rich sources, TMC-1 and Lupus-1A. The abundance ratios are 1.00:(1.11\pm0.15):(1.47\pm0.18) for [H13CCCN]:[HC13CCN]:[HCC13CN]. This result implies that the 13C isotope is also concentrated in the carbon atom adjacent to the nitrogen atom in HC3N in Serpens south 1a, which is similar to TMC-1. The [HC3N]/[H13CCCN] ratio of 78\pm9, the [HC3N]/[HC13CCN] ratio of 70\pm8, and the [HC3N]/[HCC13CN] ratio of 53\pm4 are also comparable to those in TMC-1. In any case, Serpens South 1a proves a testing ground for understanding carbon-chain chemistry.

SMA observations of C2H in High-Mass Star Forming Regions

C$_2$H is a representative hydrocarbon that is abundant and ubiquitous in the interstellar medium (ISM). To study its chemical properties, we present Submillimeter Array (SMA) observations of the C$_2$H $N=3-2$ and HC$_3$N $J=30-29$ transitions and the 1.1 mm continuum emission toward four OB cluster-forming regions, AFGL 490, ON 1, W33 Main, and G10.6-0.4, which cover a bolometric luminosity range of $\sim$10$^3$--10$^6$ $L_{\odot}$. We found that on large scales, the C$_2$H emission traces the dense molecular envelope. However, for all observed sources, the peaks of C$_2$H emission are offset by several times times 10$^4$ AU from the peaks of 1.1 mm continuum emission, where the most luminous stars are located. By comparing the distribution and profiles of C$_2$H hyperfine lines and the 1.1 mm continuum emission, we find that the C$_2$H column density (and abundance) around the 1.1 mm continuum peaks is lower than those in the ambient gas envelope. Chemical models suggest that C$_2$H might be transformed to other species owing to increased temperature and density; thus, its reduced abundance could be the signpost of the heated molecular gas in the $\sim$10$^4$ AU vicinity around the embedded high-mass stars. Our results support such theoretical prediction for centrally embedded $\sim10^3$--$10^6L_{\odot}$ OB star-forming cores, while future higher-resolution observations are required to examine the C$_2$H transformation around the localized sites of high-mass star formation.

The Weak Carbon Monoxide Emission In An Extremely Metal Poor Galaxy, Sextans A

Carbon monoxide (CO) is one of the primary coolants of gas and an easily accessible tracer of molecular gas in spiral galaxies but it is unclear if CO plays a similar role in metal poor dwarfs. We carried out a deep observation with IRAM 30 m to search for CO emission by targeting the brightest far-IR peak in a nearby extremely metal poor galaxy, Sextans A, with 7% Solar metallicity. A weak CO J=1-0 emission is seen, which is already faint enough to place a strong constraint on the conversion factor (a_CO) from the CO luminosity to the molecular gas mass that is derived from the spatially resolved dust mass map. The a_CO is at least seven hundred times the Milky Way value. This indicates that CO emission is exceedingly weak in extremely metal poor galaxies, challenging its role as a coolant in these galaxies.

Sulfur-Bearing Molecules In Massive Star-Forming Regions: Observations Of OCS, CS, H2S and SO

We studied sulfur chemistry of massive star-forming regions through single-dish submillimeter spectroscopy. OCS, O13CS, 13CS, H2S and SO transitions were observed toward a sample of massive star-forming regions with embedded UCH II or CH II regions. These sources could be divided into H II-hot core and H II-only sources based on their CH3CN emission. Our results show that the OCS line of thirteen sources is optically thick, with optical depth ranging from 5 to 16. Column densities of these molecules were computed under LTE conditions. CS column densities were also derived using its optically thin isotopologue 13CS. H2S is likely to be the most abundant gas-phase sulfuretted molecules in hot assive cores. Both the column density and abundance of sulfur-bearing molecules decrease significantly from H II-hot core to H II-only sources. Ages derived from hot core models appear to be consistent with star-formation theories, suggesting that abundance ratios of [CS]/[SO], [SO]/[OCS] and [OCS]/[CS] could be used as chemical clocks in massive star-forming regions.

SMT CO (2-1) Observations of Nearby Star-Forming Galaxies

We present CO $J$=2-1 observations towards 32 nearby gas-rich star-forming galaxies selected from the ALFALFA and WISE catalogs, using the Sub-millimeter Telescope. Our sample is selected to be dominated by intermediate-$M_{\rm *}$ galaxies. The scaling-relations between molecular gas, atomic gas and galactic properties (stellar mass, NUV$- r$ and WISE color W3$-$W2) are examined and discussed. Our results show that (1). In the galaxies with stellar mass $M_{\rm *}$ $\leqslant 10^{10}$ $M_{\odot}$, HI fraction ($f_{\rm HI}$ $\equiv$ $M_{\rm HI}$/$M_{\rm *}$) is significantly higher than that of more massive galaxies, while H$_2$ gas fraction ($f_{\rm H_2}$ $\equiv$ $M_{\rm H_2}$/$M_{\rm *}$) remain nearly unchanged. (2). Comparing with $f_{\rm H_2}$, $f_{\rm HI}$ correlates better with both $M_{\rm *}$ and NUV$- r$. (3). A new parameter, WISE color W3$-$W2 (12\,$μ$m$-$4.6\,$μ$m) is introduced, which is similar to NUV$- r$ in tracing star formation activity, and we find that W3$-$W2 has a tighter anti-correlation with log $f_{\rm H_2}$ than the anti-correlation of (NUV$- r$) - $f_{\rm HI}$, (NUV$- r$) - $f_{\rm H_2}$ and (W3$-$W2) - $f_{\rm HI}$. This indicates that W3$-$W2 can trace the H$_2$ fraction in galaxies. For gas ratio $M_{\rm H_2}$/$M_{\rm HI}$, only in the intermediate-$M_{\rm *}$ galaxies it appears to depend on $M_{\rm *}$ and NUV$- r$. We find a tight correlation between the molecular gas mass $M_{\rm H_2}$ and 12\,$μ$m (W3) luminosities ($L_{\rm 12\,μm}$), and the slope is close to unity (1.03 $\pm$ 0.06) for the SMT sample. This correlation may reflect that the cold gas and dust are well mixed on global galactic scale. Using the all-sky 12\,$μ$m (W3) data available in WISE, this correlation can be used to estimate CO flux for molecular gas observations and can even predict H$_2$ mass for star-forming galaxies.

Inefficient Star Formation In Extremely Metal Poor Galaxies

The first galaxies contain stars born out of gas with little or no metals. The lack of metals is expected to inhibit efficient gas cooling and star formation but this effect has yet to be observed in galaxies with oxygen abundance relative to hydrogen below a tenth of that of the Sun. Extremely metal poor nearby galaxies may be our best local laboratories for studying in detail the conditions that prevailed in low metallicity galaxies at early epochs. Carbon Monoxide (CO) emission is unreliable as tracers of gas at low metallicities, and while dust has been used to trace gas in low-metallicity galaxies, low-spatial resolution in the far-infrared has typically led to large uncertainties. Here we report spatially-resolved infrared observations of two galaxies with oxygen abundances below 10 per cent solar, and show that stars form very inefficiently in seven star-forming clumps of these galaxies. The star formation efficiencies are more than ten times lower than found in normal, metal rich galaxies today, suggesting that star formation may have been very inefficient in the early Universe.

VLA observations of ammonia in high-mass star formation regions

We report systematic mapping observations of the NH$_{3}$ (1,1) and (2,2) inversion lines towards 62 high-mass star-forming regions using VLA in its D and DnC array configurations. The VLA images cover a spatial dynamic range from 40$"$ to 3$"$, allowing us to trace gas kinematics from $\sim$1 pc scales to $\lesssim$0.1 pc scales. Based on the NH$_3$ morphology and the infrared nebulosity on 1\,pc scales, we categorize three sub-classes in the sample: filaments, hot cores, and NH$_3$ dispersed sources. The ubiquitous gas filaments found on 1 pc scales have a typical width of $\sim$0.1\,pc and often contain regularly spaced fragments along the major axis. The spacing of the fragments and the column densities are consistent with the turbulent supported fragmentation of cylinders. Several sources show multiple filaments that converge toward a center, where the velocity field in the filaments is consistent with gas flows. We derive rotational temperature maps for the entire sample. For the three hot core sources, we find a projected radial temperature distribution that is best fitted by power-law indices from $-$0.18 to $-$0.35. We identify 174 velocity-coherent $\sim$0.1 pc scale dense cores from the entire sample. The mean physical properties for these cores are 1.1 km\,s$^{-1}$ in intrinsic linewidth, 18 K in NH$_{3}$ rotational temperature, 2.3$\times$10$^{15}$ cm$^{-2}$ in NH$_3$ gas column density, and 67 $M_{\odot}$ in molecular mass. The dense cores identified from the filamentary sources are closer to be virialized. Dense cores in the other two categories of sources appear to be dynamically unstable.
