A binary tree of complete intersections with the strong Lefschetz property

In this paper we give a new family of complete intersections which have the strong Lefschetz property. The family consists of (Artinian algebras defined by) ideals generated by power sum symmetric polynomials of consecutive degrees and of certain ideals naturally derived from them. This family has a structure of a binary tree and this observation is a key to prove that all members in it have the strong Lefschetz property.

Betti numbers for connected sums of graded Gorenstein artinian algebras

The connected sum construction, which takes as input Gorenstein rings and produces new Gorenstein rings, can be considered as an algebraic analogue for the topological construction having the same name. We determine the graded Betti numbers for connected sums of graded Artinian Gorenstein algebras. Along the way, we find the graded Betti numbers for fiber products of graded rings; an analogous result was obtained in the local case by Geller. We relate the connected sum construction to the doubling construction, which also produces Gorenstein rings. Specifically, we show that a connected sum of doublings is the doubling of a fiber product ring.

Higher Lorentzian Polynomials, Higher Hessians, and the Hodge-Riemann Property for Graded Oriented Artinian Gorenstein Algebras in Codimension Two

A (standard graded) oriented Artinian Gorenstein algebra over the real numbers is uniquely determined by a real homogeneous polynomial called its Macaulay dual generator. We study the mixed Hodge-Riemann relations on oriented Artinian Gorenstein algebras for which we give a signature criterion on the higher mixed Hessian matrices of its Macaulay dual generator. Inspired by recent work of Brändén and Huh, we introduce a class of homogeneous polynomials in two variables called $i$-Lorentzian polynomials, and show that these are exactly the Macaulay dual generators of oriented Artinian Gorenstein algebras in codimension two satisfying mixed Hodge-Riemann relations up to degree $i$ on the positive orthant of linear forms. We further show that the set of $i$-Lorentzian polynomials of degree $d$ are in one-to-one correspondence with the set of totally nonnegative Toeplitz matrices of size depending on $i$ and $d$. A corollary is that all normally stable polynomials, i.e. polynomials whose normalized coefficients form a PF sequence, are $i$-Lorentzian. Another corollary is an analogue of Whitney's theorem for Toeplitz matrices, which appears to be new: the closure of the set of totally positive Toeplitz matrices, in the Euclidean space of all real matrices of a given size, is equal to the set of totally nonnegative Toeplitz matrices.

Cohomological Blow Ups of Graded Artinian Gorenstein Algebras Along Surjective Maps

We introduce the cohomological blow up of a graded Artinian Gorenstein (AG) algebra along a surjective map, which we term BUG (Blow Up Gorenstein) for short. This is intended to translate to an algebraic context the cohomology ring of a blow up of a projective manifold along a projective submanifold. We show, among other things, that a BUG is a connected sum, that it is the general fiber in a flat family of algebras, and that it preserves the strong Lefschetz property. We also show that standard graded compressed algebras are rarely BUGs, and we classify those BUGs that are complete intersections. We have included many examples throughout this manuscript.

Principal Radical Systems, Lefschetz Properties and Perfection of Specht Ideals of Two-Rowed Partitions

We show that the Specht ideal of a two-rowed partition is perfect over an arbitrary field, provided that the characteristic is either zero or bounded below by the size of the second row of the partition, and we show this lower bound is tight. We also establish perfection and other properties of certain variants of Specht ideals, and find a surprising connection to the weak Lefschetz property. Our results in particular give a self-contained proof of Cohen-Macaulayness of certain $h$-equals sets, a result previously obtained by Etingof-Gorsky-Losev over the complex numbers using rational Cherednik algebras.

On the theory of Gordan-Noether on homogeneous forms with zero Hessian (Improved version)

We give a detailed proof for Gordan-Noether's results in "Ueber die algebraischen Formen, deren Hesse'sche Determinante identisch verschwindet" published in 1876 in Mathematische Annahlen. C. Lossen has written a paper in a similar direction as the present paper, but did not provide a proof for every result. In our paper, every result is proved. Furthermore, our paper is independent of Lossen's paper and includes a considerable number of new observations. An earlier version of this paper has been printed in Proceedings of the School of Science of Tokai University, Vol.49, Mar. 2014. In this version, a serious error has been corrected and some new results have been added.

Regular sequences of symmetric polynomials

Denote by p_k the k-th power sum symmetric polynomial n variables. The interpretation of the q-analogue of the binomial coefficient as Hilbert function leads us to discover that n consecutive power sums in n variables form a regular sequence. We consider then the following problem: describe the subsets n powersums forming a regular sequence. A necessary condition is that n! divides the product of the degrees of the elements. To find an easily verifiable sufficient condition turns out to be surprisingly difficult already in 3 variables. Given positive integers a<b<c with GCD(a,b,c)=1, we conjecture that p_a, p_b, p_c is a regular sequence for n=3 if and only if 6 divides abc. We provide evidence for the conjecture by proving it in several special instances.

Vandermonde determinantal ideals

We show that the ideal generated by maximal minors (i.e., $(k+1)$-minors) of a $(k+1) \times n$ Vandermonde matrix is radical and Cohen-Macaulay. Note that this ideal is generated by all Specht polynomials with shape $(n-k,1,...,1)$.

A characterization of the Macaulay dual generators for quadratic complete intersections

Let $F$ be a homogeneous polynomial in $n$ variables of degree $d$ over a field $K$. Let $A(F)$ be the associated Artinian graded $K$-algebra. If $B \subset A(F)$ is a subalgebra of $A(F)$ which is Gorenstein with the same socle degree as $A(F)$, we describe the Macaulay dual generator for $B$ in terms of $F$. Furthermore when $n=d$, we give necessary and sufficient conditions on the polynomial $F$ for $A(F)$ to be a complete intersection.

Weyr structures of matrices and relevance to commutative finite-dimensional algebras

We relate the Weyr structure of a square matrix $B$ to that of the $t \times t$ block upper triangular matrix $C$ that has $B$ down the main diagonal and first superdiagonal, and zeros elsewhere. Of special interest is the case $t = 2$ and where $C$ is the $n$th Sierpinski matrix $B_n$, which is defined inductively by $B_0 = 1$ and $B_n = \left[\begin{array}{cc} B_{n-1} & B_{n-1} 0 & B_{n-1} \end{array} \right]$. This yields an easy derivation of the Weyr structure of $B_n$ as the binomial coefficients arranged in decreasing order. Earlier proofs of the Jordan analogue of this had often relied on deep theorems from such areas as algebraic geometry. The result has interesting consequences for commutative, finite-dimension algebras.

The resultants of quadratic binomial complete intersections

We compute the resultants for quadratic binomial complete intersections. As an application we show that any quadratic binomial complete intersection can have the set of square-free monomials as a vector space basis if the generators are put in a normal form.

Determinants of incidence and Hessian matrices arising from the vector space lattice

Let $\mathcal{V}=\bigsqcup_{i=0}^n\mathcal{V}_i$ be the lattice of subspaces of the $n$-dimensional vector space over the finite field $\mathbb{F}_q$ and let $\mathcal{A}$ be the graded Gorenstein algebra defined over $\mathbb{Q}$ which has $\mathcal{V}$ as a $\mathbb{Q}$ basis. Let $F$ be the Macaulay dual generator for $\mathcal{A}$. We compute explicitly the Hessian determinant $|\frac{\partial ^2F}{\partial X_i \partial X_j}|$ evaluated at the point $X_1 = X_2 = \cdots = X_N=1$ and relate it to the determinant of the incidence matrix between $\mathcal{V}_1$ and $\mathcal{V}_{n-1}$. Our exploration is motivated by the fact that both of these matrices arise naturally in the study of the Sperner property of the lattice and the Lefschetz property for the graded Artinian Gorenstein algebra associated to it.

The EGH Conjecture and the Sperner property of complete intersections

Let $A$ be a graded complete intersection over a field and $B$ the monomial complete intersection with the generators of the same degrees as $A$. The EGH conjecture says that if $I$ is a graded ideal in $A$, then there should be an ideal $J$ in $B$ such that $B/J$ and $A/I$ have the same Hilbert function. We show that if the EGH conjecture is true, then it can be used to prove that every graded complete intersection over any field has the Sperner property.

The quadratic complete intersections with the action of the symmetric group

We prove that any quadratic complete intersection with certain action of the symmetric group has the strong Lefschetz property over a field of characteristic zero. As a consequence of it we construct a new class of homogeneous complete intersections with generators of higher degrees which have the strong Lefschetz property.

On ideals with the Rees property

A homogeneous ideal $I$ of a polynomial ring $S$ is said to have the Rees property if, for any homogeneous ideal $J \subset S $ which contains $I$, the number of generators of $J$ is smaller than or equal to that of $I$. A homogeneous ideal $I \subset S$ is said to be $\mathfrak m$-full if $\mathfrak mI:y=I$ for some $y \in \mathfrak m$, where $\mathfrak m$ is the graded maximal ideal of $S$. It was proved by one of the authors that $\mathfrak m$-full ideals have the Rees property and that the converse holds in a polynomial ring with two variables. In this note, we give examples of ideals which have the Rees property but are not $\mathfrak m$-full in a polynomial ring with more than two variables. To prove this result, we also show that every Artinian monomial almost complete intersection in three variables has the Sperner property.
