Foliated Hopf hypersurfaces in complex hyperbolic quadrics

This paper deals with a limiting case motivated by contact geometry. The limiting case of a tensorial characterization of contact hypersurfaces in Kahler manifolds leads to Hopf hypersurfaces whose maximal complex subbundle of the tangent bundle is integrable. It is known that in non-flat complex space forms and in complex quadrics such real hypersurfaces do not exist, but the existence problem in other irreducible Kahler manifolds is open. In this paper we construct explicitly a one-parameter family of homogeneous Hopf hypersurfaces, whose maximal complex subbundle of the tangent bundle is integrable, in a Hermitian symmetric space of non-compact type and rank two. These are the first known examples of such real hypersurfaces in irreducible Kahler manifolds.

Submanifolds with constant principal curvatures in symmetric spaces

We study submanifolds whose principal curvatures, counted with multiplicities, do not depend on the normal direction. Such submanifolds, which we briefly call CPC submanifolds, are always austere, hence minimal, and have constant principal curvatures. Well-known classes of examples include totally geodesic submanifolds, homogeneous austere hypersurfaces, and singular orbits of cohomogeneity one actions. The main purpose of this article is to present a systematic approach to the construction and classification of homogeneous submanifolds whose principal curvatures are independent of the normal direction in irreducible Riemannian symmetric spaces of non-compact type and rank greater than or equal to two. In particular, we provide a large number of new examples of non-totally geodesic CPC submanifolds not coming from cohomogeneity one actions (note that only one example was known previously, namely a particular 11-dimensional submanifold of the Cayley hyperbolic plane).

The Index Conjecture for Symmetric Spaces

In 1980, Onishchik introduced the index of a Riemannian symmetric space as the minimal codimension of a (proper) totally geodesic submanifold. He calculated the index for symmetric spaces of rank less than or equal to 2, but for higher rank it was unclear how to tackle the problem. In earlier papers we developed several approaches to this problem, which allowed us to calculate the index for many symmetric spaces. Our systematic approach led to a conjecture for how to calculate the index. The purpose of this paper is to verify the conjecture.

The index of compact simple Lie groups

Let M be an irreducible Riemannian symmetric space. The index i(M) of M is the minimal codimension of a (non-trivial) totally geodesic submanifold of M. The purpose of this note is to determine the index i(M) for all irreducible Riemannian symmetric spaces M of type (II) and (IV).

Cohomogeneity one actions on Minkowski spaces

We study isometric cohomogeneity one actions on the (n+1)-dimensional Minkowski space up to orbit-equivalence. We give examples of isometric cohomogeneity one actions on the Minkowski space whose orbit spaces are non-Hausdorff. We show that there exist isometric cohomogeneity one actions on the Minkowski space which are orbit-equivalent on the complement of an n-dimensional degenerate subspace and not orbit-equivalent on this degenerate subspace. We classify isometric cohomogeneity one actions on 2- and 3-dimensional Minkowski spaces up to orbit-equivalence.

Maximal totally geodesic submanifolds and index of symmetric spaces

Let M be an irreducible Riemannian symmetric space. The index i(M) of M is the minimal codimension of a totally geodesic submanifold of M. In previous work the authors proved that i(M) is bounded from below by the rank rk(M) of M. In this paper we classify all irreducible Riemannian symmetric spaces M for which the equality holds, that is, rk(M) = i(M). In this context we also obtain an explicit classification of all non-semisimple maximal totally geodesic submanifolds in irreducible Riemannian symmetric spaces of noncompact type and show that they are closely related to irreducible symmetric R-spaces. We also determine the index of some symmetric spaces and classify the irreducible Riemannian symmetric spaces of noncompact type with i(M) = 4,5 or 6.

On the index of symmetric spaces

Let M be an irreducible Riemannian symmetric space. The index of M is the minimal codimension of a (non-trivial) totally geodesic submanifold of M. We prove that the index is bounded from below by the rank of the symmetric space. We also classify the irreducible Riemannian symmetric spaces whose index is less or equal than 3.

Compact homogeneous Riemannian manifolds with low co-index of symmetry

We develop a general structure theory for compact homogeneous Riemannian manifolds in relation to the co-index of symmetry. We will then use these results to classify irreducible, simply connected, compact homogeneous Riemannian manifolds whose co-index of symmetry is less or equal than three. We will also construct many examples which arise from the theory of polars and centrioles in Riemannian symmetric spaces of compact type.

Contact hypersurfaces in Kaehler manifolds

A contact hypersurface in a Kaehler manifold is a real hypersurface for which the induced almost contact metric structure determines a contact structure. We carry out a systematic study of contact hypersurfaces in Kaehler manifolds. We then apply these general results to obtain classifications of contact hypersurfaces with constant mean curvature in the complex quadric SO(n+2)/SO(n)SO(2) and its noncompact dual space SO(n,2)/SO(n)SO(2) for n > 2.

Real hypersurfaces with isometric Reeb flow in complex quadrics

We classify real hypersurfaces with isometric Reeb flow in the complex quadrics Q^m for m > 2. We show that m is even, say m = 2k, and any such hypersurface is an open part of a tube around a k-dimensional complex projective space CP^k which is embedded canonically in Q^{2k} as a totally geodesic complex submanifold. As a consequence we get the non-existence of real hypersurfaces with isometric Reeb flow in odd-dimensional complex quadrics.

Polar actions on the complex hyperbolic plane

We classify the polar actions on the complex hyperbolic plane up to orbit equivalence. Apart from the trivial and transitive polar actions, there are five polar actions of cohomogeneity one and four polar actions of cohomogeneity two.

Cohomogeneity one actions on symmetric spaces of noncompact type

An isometric action of a Lie group on a Riemannian manifold is of cohomogeneity one if the corresponding orbit space is one-dimensional. In this article we develop a conceptual approach to the classification of cohomogeneity one actions on Riemannian symmetric spaces of noncompact type in terms of orbit equivalence. As a consequence, we find many new examples of cohomogeneity one actions on Riemannian symmetric spaces of noncompact type. We apply our conceptual approach to derive explicit classifications of cohomogeneity one actions on some symmetric spaces.

Hyperpolar homogeneous foliations on symmetric spaces of noncompact type - an overview

A foliation F on a Riemannian manifold M is homogeneous if its leaves coincide with the orbits of an isometric action on M. A foliation F is polar if it admits a section, that is, a connected closed totally geodesic submanifold of M which intersects each leaf of F, and intersects orthogonally at each point of intersection. A foliation F is hyperpolar if it admits a flat section. These notes are related to joint work with Jose Carlos Diaz-Ramos and Hiroshi Tamaru about hyperpolar homogeneous foliations on Riemannian symmetric spaces of noncompact type. Apart from the classification result which we proved in arXiv:0807.3517v2 [math.DG], we present here in more detail some relevant material about symmetric spaces of noncompact type, and discuss the classification in more detail for the special case M = SL_{r+1}(R)/SO_{r+1}.

Hypersurfaces in the noncompact Grassmann manifold SU_{2,m}/S(U_2U_m)

The Riemannian symmetric space SU_{2,m}/S(U_2U_m) is both Hermitian symmetric and quaternionic Kahler symmetric. Let M be a hypersurface in SU_{2,m}/S(U_2U_m) and denote by TM its tangent bundle. The complex structure of SU_{2,m}/S(U_2U_m) determines a maximal complex subbundle C of TM, and the quaternionic structure of SU_{2,m}/S(U_2U_m) determines a maximal quaternionic subbundle Q of TM. In this article we investigate hypersurfaces in SU_{2,m}/S(U_2U_m) for which C and Q are closely related to the shape of M.

Homogeneous hypersurfaces in complex hyperbolic spaces

We study the geometry of homogeneous hypersurfaces and their focal sets in complex hyperbolic spaces. In particular, we provide a characterization of the focal set in terms of its second fundamental form and determine the principal curvatures of the homogeneous hypersurfaces together with their multiplicities.
