Towards a non-perturbative computation of the RGI strange quark mass with two dynamical flavors

The non-perturbative running of the quark mass in the Schroedinger functional scheme is computed over a large energy range (covering scales differing by two orders of magnitude). This allows to relate lattice estimates of the running quark mass to the renormalization group invariant mass. The result is used in a preliminary computation of the strange quark mass in the theory with two flavors of non-perturbatively improved Wilson quarks. A more detailed discussion of the calculation can be found in [1].

Non-perturbative quark mass renormalization in two-flavor QCD

The running of renormalized quark masses is computed in lattice QCD with two flavors of massless O(a) improved Wilson quarks. The regularization and flavor independent factor that relates running quark masses to the renormalization group invariant ones is evaluated in the Schroedinger Functional scheme. Using existing data for the scale r_0 and the pseudoscalar meson masses, we define a reference quark mass in QCD with two degenerate quark flavors. We then compute the renormalization group invariant reference quark mass at three different lattice spacings. Our estimate for the continuum value is converted to the strange quark mass with the help of chiral perturbation theory.

Computation of the strong coupling in QCD with two dynamical flavours

We present a non-perturbative computation of the running of the coupling alpha_s in QCD with two flavours of dynamical fermions in the Schroedinger functional scheme. We improve our previous results by a reliable continuum extrapolation. The Lambda-parameter characterizing the high-energy running is related to the value of the coupling at low energy in the continuum limit. An estimate of Lambda*r_0 is given using large-volume data with lattice spacings a from 0.07 fm to 0.1 fm. It translates into Lambda_{MSbar}^{(2)}=245(16)(16) MeV [assuming r_0=0.5 fm]. The last step still has to be improved to reduce the uncertainty.

Precision computation of the leptonic D_s-meson decay constant in quenched QCD

We summarize a computation of the leptonic decay constant f_D_s of the D_s-meson in quenched QCD on the lattice. We perform a direct simulation at the masses of the strange and the charm quarks at four different lattice spacings from approximately 0.1 fm to 0.05 fm. Fully non perturbative O(a)-improvement is employed. After taking the continuum limit we arrive at a value of f_D_s=252(9) MeV, when setting the scale with the Kaon decay constant f_K=160 MeV. Setting the scale with the nucleon mass instead leads to a decrease of about 20 MeV of f_D_s.

A precise determination of the decay constant of the Ds-meson in quenched QCD

We present a lattice determination of the leptonic decay constant F_Ds of the Ds-meson using its mass and F_K as experimental input. Setting the scale with F_K=160 MeV, our final result is F_Ds = 252(9) MeV. The error contains all uncertainties apart from the quenched approximation. Setting the scale with the nucleon mass instead leads to an increase of 3(1) MeV of the leptonic decay constant which might indicate a small quenching error.

A precise determination of the charm quark's mass in quenched QCD

We present a lattice determination of the charm quark's mass, using the mass of the D_s meson as experimental input. All errors are under control with the exception of the quenched approximation. Setting the scale with F_K=160 MeV, our final result for the renormalization group invariant (RGI) quark mass is M_c = 1.654(45) GeV, which translates to m_c(m_c) =1.301(34) GeV for the running mass in the MSbar scheme. A 6 percent increase of the RGI quark mass is observed when the scale is set by the nucleon mass. This is a typical quenched scale ambiguity, which is reduced to about 3 percent for m_c(m_c), and to 4 percent for the mass ratio M_c/M_s. In contrast, the mass splitting m(Dstar_s)-m(D_s) changes from 117(11) MeV to 94(11) MeV, which is significantly smaller than the experimental value of 144 MeV.

Schrödinger functional at N_f=-2

We study the Schrödinger functional coupling for lattice Yang-Mills theory coupled to an improved bosonic spinor field, which corresponds to QCD with minus two light flavors. This theory serves as a less costly testcase than QCD for the scaling of the coupling.

The charm quark's mass in quenched QCD

We present our preliminary result for the charmed quark mass, which follows from taking the D_s and K meson masses from experiment and r0=0.5 fm (or, equivalently F_K=160 MeV) to set the scale. For the renormalization group invariant quark mass we obtain M_c = 1684(64) MeV, which translates to m_c(m_c)= 1314 (40)(20)(7) MeV for the running mass in the MSbar scheme. Renormalization is treated non-perturbatively, and the continuum limit has been taken, so that the only uncontrolled systematic error consists in the use of the quenched approximation.

Schr"odinger functional at negative flavour number

The scaling of the Schr"odinger functional coupling is studied numerically and perturbatively for an SU(3) lattice gauge field coupled to an O(a) improved bosonic spinor field. This corresponds to QCD with minus two light flavours and is used as a numerically less costly test case for real QCD. A suitable algorithm is developed, and the influence of the matter fields on the continuum limit and the lattice artefacts are studied in detail.

First results on the running coupling in QCD with two massless flavours

We report on the non-perturbative computation of the running coupling of two-flavour QCD in the Schr"odinger functional scheme. The corresponding Lambda-parameter, which describes the coupling strength at high energy, is related to a low energy scale which still remains to be connected to a hadronic ``experimentally'' observable quantity. We find the non-perturbative evolution of the coupling indispensable to avoid untolerable errors in the estimated Lambda-parameter.

Non-perturbative results for the coefficients b_m and b_a-b_p in O(a) improved lattice QCD

We determine the improvement coefficients b_m and b_a-bp in quenched lattice QCD for a range of beta-values, which is relevant for current large scale simulations. At fixed beta, the results are rather sensitive to the precise choices of parameters. We therefore impose improvement conditions at constant renormalized parameters, and the coefficients are then obtained as smooth functions of g_0^2. Other improvement conditions yield a different functional dependence, but the difference between the coefficients vanishes with a rate proportional to the lattice spacing. We verify this theoretical expectation in a few examples and are therefore confident that O(a) improvement is achieved for physical quantities. As a byproduct of our analysis we also obtain the finite renormalization constant which relates the subtracted bare quark mass to the bare PCAC mass.

Running coupling for Wilson bermions

A non perturbative finite size scaling technique is used to study a running coupling in lattice Yang-Mills theory coupled to a bosonic Wilson spinor field in the Schrödinger functional scheme. This corresponds to two negative flavours. The scaling behaviour in this case is compared to quenched results and to QCD with two flavours. The continuum limit is confronted with renormalized perturbation theory.

Two-dimensional Quantum Gravity

This Ph.D. thesis pursues two goals: The study of the geometrical structure of two-dimensional quantum gravity and in particular its fractal nature. To address these questions we review the continuum formalism of quantum gravity with special focus on the scaling properties of the theory. We discuss several concepts of fractal dimensions which characterize the extrinsic and intrinsic geometry of quantum gravity. This work is partly based on work done in collaboration with Jan Ambjørn, Dimitrij Boulatov, Jakob L. Nielsen and Yoshiyuki Watabiki (1997). The other goal is the discussion of the discretization of quantum gravity and to address the so called quantum failure of Regge calculus. We review dynamical triangulations and show that it agrees with the continuum theory in two dimensions. Then we discuss Regge calculus and prove that a continuum limit cannot be taken in a sensible way and that it does not reproduce continuum results. This work is partly based on work done in collaboration with Jan Ambjørn, Jakob L. Nielsen and George Savvidy (1997).

Beyond the periodic orbit theory

The global constraints on chaotic dynamics induced by the analyticity of smooth flows are used to dispense with individual periodic orbits and derive infinite families of exact sum rules for several simple dynamical systems. The associated Fredholm determinants are of particularly simple polynomial form. The theory developed suggests an alternative to the conventional periodic orbit theory approach to determining eigenspectra of transfer operators.

Directed Percolation Universality in Asynchronous Evolution of Spatio-Temporal Intermittency

We present strong evidence that a coupled-map-lattice model for spatio-temporal intermittency belongs to the universality class of directed percolation when the updating rules are asynchronous, i.e. when only one randomly chosen site is evolved at each time step. In contrast, when the system is subjected to parallel updating, available numerical evidence suggests that it does not belong to this universality class and that it is not even universal. We argue that in the absence of periodic external forcing, the asynchronous rule is the more physical.

Interpolation Parameter and Expansion for the Three Dimensional Non-Trivial Scalar Infrared Fixed Point

We compute the non--trivial infrared $ϕ^4_3$--fixed point by means of an interpolation expansion in fixed dimension. The expansion is formulated for an infinitesimal momentum space renormalization group. We choose a coordinate representation for the fixed point interaction in derivative expansion, and compute its coordinates to high orders by means of computer algebra. We compute the series for the critical exponent $ν$ up to order twenty five of interpolation expansion in this representation, and evaluate it using \pade, Borel--\pade, Borel--conformal--\pade, and Dlog--\pade resummation. The resummation returns $0.6262(13)$ as the value of $ν$.
