Investigating the collision energy dependence of $η$/s in RHIC beam energy scan using Bayesian statistics

We determine the probability distributions of shear viscosity over the entropy density ratio $η/s$ in Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=19.6, 39$, and $62.4$ GeV, using Bayesian inference and Gaussian process emulators for a model-to-data statistical analysis that probes the full input parameter space of a transport+viscous hydrodynamics hybrid model. We find the most likely value of $η/s$ to be larger at smaller $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$, although the uncertainties still allow for a constant value between 0.10 and 0.15 for the investigated collision energy range.

Revealing the collision energy dependence of $η/s$ in RHIC-BES Au+Au collisions using Bayesian statistics

We investigate the collision energy dependence of $η/s$ in a transport + viscous hydrodynamics hybrid model. A Bayesian analysis is performed on RHIC beam energy scan data for $Au+Au$ collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=19.6,39,$ and $62.4$ GeV. The resulting posterior probability distributions for the model parameters show a preference for a larger value of $η/s$ at $19.6$ GeV compared to $62.4$ GeV, indicating dependence on baryon chemical potential $μ_B$.

Systematic Extraction of QGP Properties

We investigate the collision energy dependence of shear viscosity over the entropy density ratio $η/s$ in Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=19.6, 39$, and $62.4$ GeV, using Bayesian statistical analysis and Gaussian process emulators to explore the full input parameter space of a transport+hydrodynamics hybrid model. The ratio is found to decrease as a function of collision energy, supporting the results from previous studies performed with the same hybrid model.

Multi-strange hadrons and the precision extraction of QGP properties in the RHIC-BES domain

We systematically compare an event-by-event transport+viscous hydrodynamics hybrid model to data from the RHIC beam energy scan using a general Bayesian method. We demonstrate how the inclusion of multistrange hadron observables affects the outcome of the Bayesian analysis and conduct an in depth analysis of the viability of $ϕ$ and $Ω$ as probes of the transition region between a deconfined quark-gluon plasma and hadronic phase in heavy ion collisions at higher-end RHIC collision energies. Utilizing UrQMD to model the final hadronic interactions, we examine the collision rates of $ϕ$ and $Ω$ and the modification to their transverse momentum spectra due to these interactions.

Heavy-flavor dynamics in relativistic p-Pb collisions at $\sqrt{S_{NN}}=5.02$ TeV

We investigate the heavy flavor dynamics in the quark-gluon plasma (QGP) medium created in p-Pb collisions at the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC). In the (3+1)-dimensional viscous hydrodynamics model describing QGP medium, the dynamics of heavy quarks are studied in an improved Langevin framework incorporating both collisional and radiative energy loss. The hadronization of the heavy quarks is given by a hybrid model of fragmentation and recombination. We find that the in-medium evolution of charm quarks raises the D-meson $R_{pPb}$ at low transverse momenta while it suppresses the D-meson $R_{pPb}$ at intermediate momenta. In addition, the elliptic flow of D-meson is calculated. For a diffusion coefficient which reproduces central $R_{AA}$ data at the LHC, we find a much smaller D-meson $v_2$ compared to the light hadrons. This observation indicates an incomplete coupling between heavy quarks with the medium, due to the reduced medium size compared to AA collisions.

The beam energy dependence of collective flow in heavy ion collisions

The major goals of heavy ion research are to explore the phase diagram of quantum chromodynamics (QCD) and to investigate the properties of the quark gluon plasma (QGP), a new state of matter created at high temperatures and/or densities. Collective anisotropic flow is one of the most promising observables to gain insights about the properties of the system created in relativistic heavy ion reactions. The current status of the beam energy dependence of the first three Fourier coefficients of the azimuthal distribution of the produced particles $v_1$ to $v_3$ within hybrid transport plus hydrodynamics approaches are summarized.

What the collective flow excitation function can tell about the quark-gluon plasma

Recent STAR data from the RHIC beam energy scan (BES) show that the midrapidity slope dv1/dy of the directed flow v1 of net-protons changes sign twice within the collision energy range 7.7 - 39 GeV. To investigate this phenomenon, we study the collision energy dependence of v1 utilizing a Boltzmann + hydrodynamics hybrid model. Calculations with dynamically evolved initial and final state show no qualitative difference between an equation of state with a cross-over and one with a first-order phase transition, in contrast to earlier pure fluid predictions. Furthermore, our analysis of the elliptic flow v2 shows that pre-equilibrium transport dynamics are partially compensating for the diminished elliptic flow production in the hydrodynamical phase at lower energies, which leads to a qualitative agreement with STAR BES results in midcentral collisions. No compensation from transport is found in our model for integrated v3, which decreases from approx 0.02 at sqrt(sNN) = 27 GeV to approx 0.005 at sqrt(sNN) = 7.7 GeV in midcentral collisions.

Evolution of elliptic and triangular flow as a function of collision energy in a hybrid model

We study the collision energy dependence of elliptic flow v_2 and triangular flow v_3 in Au+Au collisions within the energy range sqrt(s_{NN}) = 5-200 GeV, utilizing a transport + hydrodynamics hybrid model. The transport part is described by the Ultrarelativistic Quantum Molecular Dynamics (UrQMD) approach, combined with an intermediate (3+1)-dimensional ideal hydrodynamical evolution phase using a chiral model equation of state. We find the decrease of v_2 produced by hydrodynamics at lower collision energies partially compensated by the transport dynamics. This does not apply to v_3, which falls to 0 in midcentral collisions at sqrt(s_{NN}) = 5 GeV. We conclude that the triangular flow provides the clearer signal for the formation of low-viscous fluid in heavy ion collisions.

Evolution of elliptic and triangular flow as a function of beam energy in a hybrid model

Elliptic flow has been one of the key observables for establishing the finding of the quark-gluon plasma (QGP) at the highest energies of Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) and the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). As a sign of collectively behaving matter, one would expect the elliptic flow to decrease at lower beam energies, where the QGP is not produced. However, in the recent RHIC beam energy scan, it has been found that the inclusive charged hadron elliptic flow changes relatively little in magnitude in the energies between 7.7 and 39 GeV per nucleon-nucleon collision. We study the collision energy dependence of the elliptic and triangular flow utilizing a Boltzmann + hydrodynamics hybrid model. Such a hybrid model provides a natural framework for the transition from high collision energies, where the hydrodynamical description is essential, to smaller energies, where the hadron transport dominates. This approach is thus suitable to investigate the relative importance of these two mechanisms for the production of the collective flow at different values of beam energy. Extending the examined range down to 5 GeV per nucleon-nucleon collision allows also making predictions for the CBM experiment at FAIR.

Collision Energy Evolution of Elliptic and Triangular Flow in a Hybrid Model

While the existence of a strongly interacting state of matter, known as 'quark-gluon plasma' (QGP), has been established in heavy ion collision experiments in the past decade, the task remains to map out the transition from the hadronic matter to the QGP. This is done by measuring the dependence of key observables (such as particle suppression and elliptic flow) on the collision energy of the heavy ions. This procedure, known as 'beam energy scan', has been most recently performed at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC). Utilizing a Boltzmann+hydrodynamics hybrid model, we study the collision energy dependence of initial state eccentricities and the final state elliptic and triangular flow. This approach is well suited to investigate the relative importance of hydrodynamics and hadron transport at different collision energies.

The form of the elastic energy loss probability distribution in a static medium

We examine the probability distributions P(E,t) of the energy of a hard parton traveling in a partonic medium of constant density for a time t while undergoing elastic 2-to-2 pQCD interactions using a Monte-Carlo model. The form of these distributions is found to be non-Gaussian, confirming results by other groups with similarly detailed models and challenging the validity of the widely used diffusion approximation in elastic energy loss modeling.

Monte Carlo Simulation for Elastic Energy Loss of Hard Partons in a Hydrodynamical Background

We have developed a Monte Carlo simulation describing the $2 \rightarrow 2$ scatterings of perturbatively produced, non-eikonally propagating high-energy partons with the quarks and gluons of the expanding QCD medium created in ultrarelativistic heavy ion collisions. The partonic scattering rates are computed in leading-order perturbative QCD (pQCD), while three different hydrodynamical scenarios are used to model the strongly interacting medium. We compare our results and tune the model with the neutral pion suppression observed in $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=200$ GeV Au+Au collisions at the BNL-RHIC. We find the incoherent nature of elastic energy loss incompatible with the measured angular dependence of the suppression. The effects of the initial state density fluctuations of the bulk medium are found to be small. Also the extrapolation from RHIC to the LHC is discussed.

Monte Carlo Simulation for Elastic Energy Loss of High-Energy Partons in Quark-Gluon Plasma

We examine the significance of $2 \rightarrow 2$ partonic collisions as the suppression mechanism of high-energy partons in the strongly interacting medium formed in ultrarelativistic heavy ion collisions. For this purpose, we have developed a Monte Carlo simulation describing the interactions of perturbatively produced, non-eikonally propagating high-energy partons with the quarks and gluons from the expanding QCD medium. The partonic collision rates are computed in leading-order perturbative QCD (pQCD), while three different hydrodynamical scenarios are used to model the medium. We compare our results with the suppression observed in $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=200$ GeV Au+Au collisions at the BNL-RHIC. We find the incoherent nature of elastic energy loss incompatible with the measured data and the effect of the initial state fluctuations small.

Systematics of parton-medium interaction from RHIC to LHC

Despite a wealth of experimental data for high-P_T processes in heavy-ion collisions, discriminating between different models of hard parton-medium interactions has been difficult. A key reason is that the pQCD parton spectrum at RHIC is falling so steeply that distinguishing even a moderate shift in parton energy from complete parton absorption is essentially impossible. In essence, energy loss models are effectively only probed in the vicinity of zero energy loss and, as a result, at RHIC energies only the pathlength dependence of energy loss offers some discriminating power. At LHC however, this is no longer the case: Due to the much flatter shape of the parton p_T spectra originating from 2.76 AGeV collisions, the available data probe much deeper into the model dynamics. A simultaneous fit of the nuclear suppression at both RHIC and LHC energies thus has great potential for discriminating between various models that yield equally good descriptions of RHIC data alone.

Energy loss in a fluctuating hydrodynamical background

Recently it has become apparent that event-by-event fluctuations in the initial state of hydrodynamical modelling of ultrarelativistic heavy-ion collisions are crucial in order to understand the full centrality dependence of the elliptic flow coefficient v_2. In particular, in central collisions the density fluctuations play a major role in generating the spatial eccentricity in the initial state. This raises the question to what degree high P_T physics, in particular leading-parton energy loss, which takes place in the background of an evolving medium, is sensitive to the presence of the event-by-event density fluctuations in the background. In this work, we report results for the effects of fluctuations on the nuclear modification factor R_AA in both central and noncentral sqrt(s_NN) = 200 GeV Au+Au collisions at RHIC. Two different types of energy-loss models, a radiative and an elastic, are considered. In particular, we study the dependence of the results on the assumed spatial size of the density fluctuations, and discuss the angular modulation of R_AA with respect to the event plane.

Elastic energy loss with respect to the reaction plane in a Monte-Carlo model

We present a computation of $π^0$ nuclear modification factor with respect to the reaction plane in Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=200$ GeV, based on a Monte-Carlo model of elastic energy loss of hard partons traversing the bulk hydrodynamical medium created in ultrarelativistic heavy-ion collisions. We find the incoherent nature of elastic energy loss incompatible with the measured data.

A Monte-Carlo model for elastic energy loss in a hydrodynamical background

We present a computation of elastic energy loss of hard partons traversing the bulk hydrodynamical medium created in ultrarelativistic heavy-ion collisions. The model is based on perturbative Quantum Chromodynamics (pQCD) cross sections for $2\to 2$ processes in which a hard incoming parton is assumed to interact with a thermal parton from the medium. We model the interactions of this type in a Monte-Carlo framework to account properly for exact energy-momentum conservation, non-eikonal parton propagation, parton conversion reactions and the possibility to create additional hard recoiling partons from the medium. For the thermodynamical properties of the medium we use a hydrodynamical evolution model. We do not aim at a full description of high transverse momentum ($P_T$) observables at this point. Rather, we view the model as a starting point in obtaining a baseline of what to expect under the assumptions that the medium is describable by thermal quasifree partons and that their pQCD interactions with the high-energy partons are independent. Deviations from this baseline then call for more sophisticated medium description, as well as inclusion of higher-order processes and coherence effects in the pQCD scatterings.
