Wormholes in Einstein-scalar-Gauss-Bonnet theories with a scalar self-interaction potential

We construct wormholes in Einstein-scalar-Gauss-Bonnet theories with a potential for the scalar field that includes a mass term and self-interaction terms. By varying the Gauss-Bonnet coupling constant we delimit the domain of existence of wormholes in these theories. The presence of the self-interaction enlarges the domain of existence significantly. There arise wormholes with a single throat and wormholes with an equator and a double throat. We determine the physical properties of these wormholes including their mass, their size and their geometry.

Polar quasinormal modes of the scalarized Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet black holes

We study the polar quasinormal modes of spontaneously scalarized black holes in Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet theory. In previous works we showed that a set of nodeless solutions of the fundamental branch of the model studied in [1] are stable under both radial [2] and axial perturbations [3]. Here we calculate the polar quasinormal modes and show that this set of solutions is stable against the polar perturbations as well. Thus for a certain region of the parameter space the scalarized black holes are potentially stable physically interesting objects. The spectrum of the polar quasinormal modes differs both quantitatively and qualitatively from the Schwarzschild one which offers the possibility to test the Gauss-Bonnet theory via the future gravitational wave observations.

Properties of ultra-compact particle-like solutions in Einstein-scalar-Gauss-Bonnet theories

Besides scalarized black holes and wormholes, Einstein-scalar-Gauss-Bonnet theories allow also for particle-like solutions. The scalar field of these particle-like solutions diverges at the origin, akin to the divergence of the Coulomb potential at the location of a charged particle. However, these particle-like solutions possess a globally regular metric, and their effective stress energy tensor is free from pathologies, as well. We determine the domain of existence for particle-like solutions in a number of Einstein-scalar-Gauss-Bonnet theories, considering dilatonic and power-law coupling functions, and we analyze the physical properties of the solutions. Interestingly, the solutions may possess pairs of lightrings, and thus represent ultra-compact objects. We determine the location of these lightrings, and study the effective potential for the occurrence of echoes in the gravitational-wave spectrum. We also address the relation of these particle-like solutions to the respective wormhole and black-hole solutions, and clarify the limiting procedure to recover the Fisher solution (also known as Janis-Newman-Winicourt-Wyman solution).

Particle-like ultracompact objects in Einstein-scalar-Gauss-Bonnet theories

We present a new type of ultracompact objects, featuring lightrings and echoes in the gravitational-wave spectrum. These particle-like solutions arise in Einstein-scalar-Gauss-Bonnet theories in four spacetime dimensions, representing globally regular spacetime manifolds. The scalar field diverges at the center, but the effective stress-energy tensor is free from pathologies. We determine their domain of existence and compare with wormhole solutions, black holes and the Fisher solution.

Observational signatures of strongly naked singularities: image of the thin accretion disk

We study the optical appearance of a thin accretion disk around the strongly naked static Janis-Newman-Winicour singularity. The solution does not possess a photon sphere, which results in the formation of a complex structure of bright rings in the central region of the disk image. Such structure is absent in the case of the Schwarzschild black hole with a thin accretion disk, where instead of the image we observe the black hole shadow. Some of the rings emit with the maximal observable radiation flux from the accretion disk, and should be experimentally detectable. Thus, this qualitatively new feature can be used to distinguish observationally black holes from naked singularities. We elucidate the appearance of the ring structure by revealing the physical mechanism of its formation, and explaining the nature of each of the ring images. We make the conjecture that a similar structure would also appear for other solutions without a photon sphere and it can serve as a general observational signature for distinguishing compact objects possessing no photon sphere from black holes.

Axial perturbations of the scalarized Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet black holes

We study the axial perturbations of spontaneously scalarized black holes in Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet (EGB) theories. We consider the nodeless solutions of the fundamental branch of the model studied in [1], which possesses a region of radially stable configurations, as shown in [2]. Here we show that almost all of the radially stable black holes are also stable under axial perturbations. When the axial potential is no longer strictly positive, we make use of the S-deformation method to show stability. As for the radial perturbations, hyperbolicity is lost below a certain critical horizon size for a fixed coupling constant. In the stable region, we determine the spectrum of the quasinormal modes by time evolution and by solving the associated time-independent eigenvalue problem.

Quasi-periodic oscillations from the accretion disk around distorted black holes

We study the quasi-periodic oscillations from the accretion disk around the distorted Schwarzschild black hole in the framework of the resonant models. We confine ourselves to the case of a quadrupole distortion which can be caused for example by the accreting matter flow in the vicinity of the compact object. For the purpose we examine the linear stability of the circular geodesic orbits in the equatorial plane and derive analytical expressions for the radial and vertical epicyclic frequencies. We investigate their properties in comparison with the isolated Schwarzschild black hole. Due to the influence of the external matter the vertical epicyclic frequency is not always positive anymore, and the stability of the circular orbits is determined by the interplay between both of the frequencies. As a result, the stable circular orbits do not extend to infinity, but are confined to a finite annular region between an inner and an outer marginally stable orbit. In addition, the degeneracy between the vertical epicyclic and the orbital frequency, which is characteristic for the Schwarzschild solution, is broken, and there are regions in the parametric space where the radial epicyclic frequency is larger than the vertical one. All these properties allow for much more diverse types of non-linear resonances to be excited than for the isolated Schwarzschild black hole, which can provide an explanation for the observed 3:2 ratio between the twin-peak frequencies of the quasi-periodic oscillations from the accretion disk.

Quasinormal modes of dilatonic Reissner-Nordström black holes

We calculate the quasinormal modes of static spherically symmetric dilatonic Reissner-Nordström black holes for general values of the electric charge and of the dilaton coupling constant. The spectrum of quasinormal modes is composed of five families of modes: polar and axial gravitational-led modes, polar and axial electromagnetic-led modes, and polar scalar-led modes. We make a quantitative analysis of the spectrum, revealing its dependence on the electric charge and on the dilaton coupling constant. For large electric charge and large dilaton coupling, strong deviations from the Reissner-Nordström modes arise. In particular, isospectrality is strongly broken, both for the electromagnetic-led and the gravitational-led modes, for large values of the charge.

Einstein-Maxwell-scalar black holes: the hot, the cold and the bald

The phenomenon of spontaneous scalarisation of charged black holes (BHs) has recently motivated studies of various Einstein-Maxwell-scalar models. Within these models, different classes of BH solutions are possible, depending on the non-minimal coupling function $f(ϕ)$, between the scalar field and the Maxwell invariant. Here we consider the class wherein both the (bald) electrovacuum Reissner-Nordström (RN) BH and new scalarised BHs co-exist, and the former are never unstable against scalar perturbations. In particular we examine the model, within this subclass, with a quartic coupling function: $f(Φ) = 1+αΦ^4$. The domain of existence of the scalarised BHs, for fixed $α$, is composed of two branches. The first branch (cold scalarised BHs) is continuously connected to the extremal RN BH. The second branch (hot scalarised BHs) connects to the first one at the minimum value of the charge to mass ratio and it includes overcharged BHs. We then assess the perturbative stability of the scalarised solutions, focusing on spherical perturbations. On the one hand, cold scalarised BHs are shown to be unstable by explicitly computing growing modes. The instability is quenched at both endpoints of the first branch. On the other hand, hot scalarised BHs are shown to be stable by using the S-deformation method. Thus, in the spherical sector this model possesses two stable BH local ground states (RN and hot scalarised). We point out that the branch structure of BHs in this model parallels the one of BHs in five dimensional vacuum gravity, with [Myer-Perry BHs, fat rings, thin rings] playing the role of [RN, cold scalarised, hot scalarised] BHs.

Novel Einstein-Scalar-Gauss-Bonnet Wormholes without Exotic Matter

Novel wormholes are obtained in Einstein-scalar-Gauss-Bonnet theory for several coupling functions. The wormholes may feature a single-throat or a double-throat geometry and do not demand any exotic matter. The scalar field may asymptotically vanish or be finite, and it may possess radial excitations. The domain of existence is fully mapped out for several forms of the coupling function.

Boson Stars and QCD Boson Stars

In this talk, we present a review of our work on boson stars in a theory of a massless complex scalar field in the presence of a $U(1)$ gauge field and gravity. A sequence of bifurcation points obtained in the phase diagrams of the theory is presented and the plots of the mass $~M~$ versus charge $~Q~$ as well as plots of the mass per unit charge $~M/Q~$ versus the charge $~Q~$ of the boson stars are presented along with a discussion of the results. We also present some ideas on the possibilities of QCD boson stars.

Spinning and excited black holes in Einstein-scalar-Gauss-Bonnet theory

We construct rotating black holes in Einstein-scalar-Gauss-Bonnet theory with a quadratic coupling function. We map the domain of existence of the rotating fundamental solutions, we construct radially excited rotating black holes (including their existence lines), and we show that there are angularly excited rotating black holes. The bifurcation points of the radially and angularly excited solutions branching out of the Schwarzschild solution follow a regular pattern.

Rotating wormhole solutions with a complex phantom scalar field

We consider rotating wormhole solutions supported by a complex phantom scalar field with a quartic self-interaction, where the phantom field induces the rotation of the spacetime. The solutions are regular and asymptotically flat. A subset of solutions describing static but not spherically symmetric wormholes is also obtained.

Balancing a static black ring with a phantom scalar field

All known five dimensional, asymptotically flat, static black rings possess conical singularities. However, there is no fundamental obstruction forbidding the existence of balanced configurations, and we show that the Einstein--Klein-Gordon equations admit (numerical) solutions describing static asymptotically flat black rings, which are regular on and outside the event horizon. The scalar field is 'phantom', which creates the self-repulsion necessary to balance the black rings. Similar solutions are likely to exist in other spacetime dimensions, the basic properties of a line element describing a four dimensional, asymptotically flat black ring geometry being discussed.

Phase Diagrams of Charged Compact Boson Stars

Compact boson stars, whose scalar field vanishes identically in the exterior region, arise in a theory involving a {\it massless} complex scalar field with a conical potential, when coupled to gravity. Their charged compact generalizations, obtained in the presence of a U(1) gauge field, exhibit further interesting features. On the one hand, charged compact boson shells can arise, whose scalar field vanishes also in the central region, while on the other hand, the domain of existence of charged compact boson stars exhibits bifurcation points. First 2D phase diagrams have been studied before. Here we extend these earlier studies to a larger range of the variables and study additional phase diagrams. We then extend these studies to obtain 3D phase diagrams and present these with a detailed discussion of their various regions with respect to the bifurcation points and argue, that there is an infinite series of such bifurcation points. Thus the theory is seen to contain rich physics in a particular domain of the phase diagrams. We also discuss the dependence of the fields on the dimensionless radial coordinate for some representative points of the phase trajectories in the phase diagrams of the theory.

Energy conditions for a $T^2$ wormhole at the center

Within general relativity, we determine the energy conditions needed for the existence of a toroidal $T^2$ wormhole. For this purpose, we employ the conditions of the positiveness of the second derivatives of the relevant components of the metric, which describe an increase in the linear sizes (or the area) of the cross section of the throat. The corresponding inequalities for the central energy density and pressures of the matter and for the metric are obtained.

Wormholes Immersed in Rotating Matter

We consider Ellis wormholes immersed in rotating matter in the form of an ordinary complex boson field. The resulting wormholes may possess full reflection symmetry with respect to the two asymptotically flat spacetime regions. However, there arise also wormhole solutions where the reflection symmetry is broken. The latter always appear in pairs. We analyse the properties of these rotating wormholes and show that their geometry may feature single throats or double throats. We also discuss the ergoregions and the lightring structure of these wormholes.

Axial quasi-normal modes of scalarized neutron stars with massive self-interacting scalar field

We study the axial quasi-normal modes of neutron stars in scalar-tensor theories with massive scalar field including a self-interacting term in the potential. Various realistic equations of state including nuclear, hyperonic and hybrid matter are employed. Although the effect of spontaneous scalarization of neutron stars can be very large, binary pulsar observations and gravitational wave detections significantly constrain the massless scalar-tensor theories. If we consider a properly chosen nonzero mass for the scalar field, though, the scalar-tensor parameters cannot be restricted by the observations, resulting in large deviation from pure general relativity. With this motivation in mind, we extend the universal relations for axial quasi-normal modes known in general relativity to neutron stars in massive scalar-tensor theories with self-interaction using a wide range of realistic EOS. We confirm the universality of the scaled frequency and damping time in terms of the compactness and scaled moment of inertia for neutron stars with and without massive scalarization.
