Hybrid optomechanical superconducting qubit system

We propose an integrated nonlinear superconducting device based on a nanoelectromechanical shuttle. The system can be described as a qubit coupled to a bosonic mode. The topology of the circuit gives rise to an adjustable qubit/mechanical coupling, allowing the experimenter to tune between linear and quadratic coupling in the mechanical degrees of freedom. Owing to its flexibility and potential scalability, the proposed setup represents an important step towards the implementation of bosonic error correction with mechanical elements in large-scale superconducting circuits. We give preliminary evidence of this possibility by discussing a simple state-swapping protocol that uses this device as a quantum memory element.

Semiclassical dynamics of a superconducting circuit: chaotic dynamics and fractal attractors

We study here the semiclassical dynamics of a superconducting circuit constituted by two Josephson junctions in series, in the presence of a voltage bias. We derive the equations of motion for the circuit through a Hamiltonian description of the problem, considering the voltage sources as semi-holonomic constraints. We find that the dynamics of the system corresponds to that of a planar rotor with an oscillating pivot. We show that the system exhibits a rich dynamical behaviour with chaotic properties and we present a topological classification of the cyclic solutions, providing insight into the fractal nature of the dynamical attractors.

Electron-phonon coupling in copper intercalated Bi$_{2}$Se$_{3}$

We report charge and heat transport studies in copper-intercalated topological insulator Bi$_2$Se$_3$ hybrid devices. Measured conductivity shows impact of quantum corrections, electron-electron and electron-phonon interactions. Our shot noise measurements reveal that heat flux displays a crossover between $T^2$ and $T^4$ with the increase of temperature. The results can be explained by a model of inelastic electron scattering on disorder, increasing the role of transverse acoustic phonons in the electron-phonon coupling process.

De Haas-van Alphen effect in graphene

In our work, we study the dynamics of a graphene Corbino disk supported by a gold mechanical resonator in the presence of a magnetic field. We demonstrate here that our graphene/gold mechanical structure exhibits a nontrivial resonance frequency dependence on the applied magnetic field, showing how this feature is indicative of the de Haas-van Alphen effect in the graphene Corbino disk. Our findings are the first evidence of dHvA effect for massless Dirac fermions. By relying on the mechanical resonances of the Au structure, our detection scheme is essentially independent of the material considered and can be applied for dHvA measurements on any conducting 2D material. In particular, the scheme is expected to be an important tool in studies of centrosymmetric transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) crystals, shedding new light on hidden magnetization and interaction effects.

Enhancement of the optomechanical coupling and Kerr nonlinearity using the Josephson Capacitance of Cooper-pair box

We propose a scheme for enhancing the optomechanical coupling between microwave and mechanical resonators by up to seven orders of magnitude to the ultrastrong coupling limit in a circuit optomechanical setting. The tripartite system considered here consists of a Josephson junction Cooper-pair box that mediates the coupling between the microwave cavity and the mechanical resonator. The optomechanical coupling can be modified by tuning the gate charge and the magnetic flux bias of the Cooper-pair box which in turn affect the Josephson capacitance of the Cooper-pair box. We additionally show that with suitable choice of tuning parameters, the optomechanical coupling vanishes and the system exhibits purely a cross-Kerr type of nonlinearity between the cavity and the mechanical resonator. This allows the system to be used for phonon counting.

Non-linear spin torque, pumping and cooling in superconductor/ferromagnet systems

We study the effects of the coupling between magnetization dynamics and the electronic degrees of freedom in a heterostructure of a metallic nanomagnet with dynamic magnetization coupled with a superconductor containing a steady spin-splitting field. We predict how this system exhibits a non-linear spin torque, which can be driven either with a temperature difference or a voltage across the interface. We generalize this notion to arbitrary magnetization precession by deriving a Keldysh action for the interface, describing the coupled charge, heat and spin transport in the presence of a precessing magnetization. We characterize the effect of superconductivity on the precession damping and the anti-damping torques. We also predict the full non-linear characteristic of the Onsager counterparts of the torque, showing up via pumped charge and heat currents. For the latter, we predict a spin-pumping cooling effect, where the magnetization dynamics can cool either the nanomagnet or the superconductor.

Graphene resonator as an ultrasound detector for generalized Love waves in a polymer film with two level states

We have investigated surface shear waves at 22 MHz in a 0.5-micron-thick polymer film on SiO2/Si substrate at low temperatures using suspended and non-suspended graphene as detectors. By tracking ultrasound modes detected by oscillations of a trilayer graphene membrane both in vacuum and in helium superfluid, we assign the resonances to surface shear modes, generalized Love waves, in the resist/silicon-substrate system loaded with gold. The propagation velocity of these shear modes displays a logarithmic temperature dependence below 1 K, which is characteristic for modification of the elastic properties of a disordered solid owing to a large density of two level state (TLS) systems. For the dissipation of the shear mode, we find a striking logarithmic temperature dependence, which indicates a basic relation between the speed of the surface wave propagation and the mode dissipation.

Clauser-Horne-Shimony-Holt Bell inequality test in an optomechanical device

We propose here a scheme, based on the measurement of quadrature phase coherence, aimed at testing the Clauser-Horne-Shimony-Holt Bell inequality in an optomechanical setting. Our setup is constituted by two optical cavities dispersively coupled to a common mechanical resonator. We show that it is possible to generate EPR-like correlations between the quadratures of the output fields of the two cavities, and, depending on the system parameters, to observe the violation of the Clauser-Horne-Shimony-Holt inequality.

Nonlinear quantum Langevin equations for bosonic modes in solid-state systems

Based on the experimental evidence that impurities contribute to the dissipation properties of solid-state open quantum systems, we provide here a description in terms of nonlinear quantum Langevin equations of the role played by two-level systems in the dynamics of a bosonic degree of freedom. Our starting point is represented by the description of the system/environment coupling in terms of coupling to two separate reservoirs, modelling the interaction with external bosonic modes and two level systems, respectively. Furthermore, we show how this model represents a specific example of a class of open quantum systems that can be described by nonlinear quantum Langevin equations. Our analysis offers a potential explanation of the parametric effects recently observed in circuit-QED cavity optomechanics experiments.
