Reverse Alexandrov--Fenchel inequalities for zonoids

The Alexandrov--Fenchel inequality bounds from below the square of the mixed volume $V(K_1,K_2,K_3,\ldots,K_n)$ of convex bodies $K_1,\ldots,K_n$ in $\mathbb{R}^n$ by the product of the mixed volumes $V(K_1,K_1,K_3,\ldots,K_n)$ and $V(K_2,K_2,K_3,\ldots,K_n)$. As a consequence, for integers $α_1,\ldots,α_m\in\mathbb{N}$ with $α_1+\cdots+α_m=n$ the product $V_n(K_1)^{\frac{α_1}{n}}\cdots V_n(K_m)^{\frac{α_m}{n}} $ of suitable powers of the volumes $V_n(K_i)$ of the convex bodies $K_i$, $i=1,\ldots,m$, is a lower bound for the mixed volume $V(K_1[α_1],\ldots,K_m[α_m])$, where $α_i$ is the multiplicity with which $K_i$ appears in the mixed volume. It has been conjectured by Ulrich Betke and Wolfgang Weil that there is a reverse inequality, that is, a sharp upper bound for the mixed volume $V(K_1[α_1],\ldots,K_m[α_m])$ in terms of the product of the intrinsic volumes $V_{α_i}(K_i)$, for $i=1,\ldots,m$. The case where $m=2$, $α_1=1$, $α_2=n-1$ has recently been settled by the present authors (2020). The case where $m=3$, $α_1=α_2=1$, $α_3=n-2$ has been treated by Artstein-Avidan, Florentin, Ostrover (2014) under the assumption that $K_2$ is a zonoid and $K_3$ is the Euclidean unit ball. The case where $α_2=\cdots=α_m=1$, $K_1$ is the unit ball and $K_2,\ldots,K_m$ are zonoids has been considered by Hug, Schneider (2011). Here we substantially generalize these previous contributions, in cases where most of the bodies are zonoids, and thus we provide further evidence supporting the conjectured reverse Alexandrov--Fenchel inequality. The equality cases in all considered inequalities are characterized. More generally, stronger stability results are established as well.

Extremizers and stability of the Betke--Weil inequality

Let $K$ be a compact convex domain in the Euclidean plane. The mixed area $A(K,-K)$ of $K$ and $-K$ can be bounded from above by $1/(6\sqrt{3})L(K)^2$, where $L(K)$ is the perimeter of $K$. This was proved by Ulrich Betke and Wolfgang Weil (1991). They also showed that if $K$ is a polygon, then equality holds if and only if $K$ is a regular triangle. We prove that among all convex domains, equality holds only in this case, as conjectured by Betke and Weil. This is achieved by establishing a stronger stability result for the geometric inequality $6\sqrt{3}A(K,-K)\le L(K)^2$.

Strengthened inequalities for the mean width and the $\ell$-norm

Barthe proved that the regular simplex maximizes the mean width of convex bodies whose John ellipsoid (maximal volume ellipsoid contained in the body) is the Euclidean unit ball; or equivalently, the regular simplex maximizes the $\ell$-norm of convex bodies whose Löwner ellipsoid (minimal volume ellipsoid containing the body) is the Euclidean unit ball. Schmuckenschläger verified the reverse statement; namely, the regular simplex minimizes the mean width of convex bodies whose Löwner ellipsoid is the Euclidean unit ball. Here we prove stronger stability versions of these results. We also consider related stability results for the mean width and the $\ell$-norm of the convex hull of the support of centered isotropic measures on the unit sphere.

Triangulations and a discrete Brunn-Minkowski inequality in the plane

For a set $A$ of points in the plane, not all collinear, we denote by ${\rm tr}(A)$ the number of triangles in any triangulation of $A$; that is, ${\rm tr}(A) = 2i+b-2$ where $b$ and $i$ are the numbers of points of $A$ in the boundary and the interior of $[A]$ (we use $[A]$ to denote "convex hull of $A$"). We conjecture the following analogue of the Brunn-Minkowski inequality: for any two point sets $A,B \subset {\mathbb R}^2$ one has \[ {\rm tr}(A+B)^{\frac12}\geq {\rm tr}(A)^{\frac12}+{\rm tr}(B)^{\frac12}. \] We prove this conjecture in several cases: if $[A]=[B]$, if $B=A\cup\{b\}$, if $|B|=3$, or if none of $A$ or $B$ has interior points.

The $L_p$-Minkowski problem for $-n < p< 1$

Chou and Wang's existence result for the $L_p$-Minkowski problem on ${\mathbb S}^{n-1}$ for $p\in(-n,1)$ and an absolutely continuous measure $μ$ is discussed and extended to more general measures. In particular, we provide an almost optimal sufficient condition for the case $p\in(0,1)$.

The $L_p$ dual Minkowski problem for $p>1$ and $q>0$

General $L_p$ dual curvature measures have recently been introduced by Lutwak, Yang and Zhang. These new measures unify several other geometric measures of the Brunn-Minkowski theory and the dual Brunn-Minkowski theory. $L_p$ dual curvature measures arise from $q$th dual inrinsic volumes by means of Alexandrov-type variational formulas. Lutwak, Yang and Zhang formulated the $L_p$ dual Minkowski problem, which concerns the characterization of $L_p$ dual curvature measures. In this paper, we solve the existence part of the $L_{p}$ dual Minkowski problem for $p>1$ and $q>0$, and we also discuss the regularity of the solution.

${\rm SL}(m,C)$-equivariant and translation covariant continuous tensor valuations

The space of continuous, ${\rm SL}(m,C)$-equivariant, $m\geq 2$, and translation covariant valuations taking values in the space of real symmetric tensors on $C^m\cong R^{2m}$ of rank $r\geq 0$ is completely described. The classification involves the moment tensor valuation for $r\geq 1$ and is analogous to the classification of the corresponding tensor valuations that are ${\rm SL}(2m,R)$-equivariant, although the method of proof cannot be adapted.

Cone-volume measure and stability

We show that the cone-volume measure of a convex body with centroid at the origin satisfies the subspace concentration condition. This implies, among others, a conjectured best possible inequality for the $\mathrm{U}$-functional of a convex body. For both results we provide stronger versions in the sense of stability inequalities.

Intrinsic volumes of random polytopes with vertices on the boundary of a convex body

Let $K$ be a convex body in $\R^d$, let $j\in\{1, ..., d-1\}$, and let $\varrho$ be a positive and continuous probability density function with respect to the $(d-1)$-dimensional Hausdorff measure on the boundary $\partial K$ of $K$. Denote by $K_n$ the convex hull of $n$ points chosen randomly and independently from $\partial K$ according to the probability distribution determined by $\varrho$. For the case when $\partial K$ is a $C^2$ submanifold of $\R^d$ with everywhere positive Gauss curvature, M. Reitzner proved an asymptotic formula for the expectation of the difference of the $j$th intrinsic volumes of $K$ and $K_n$, as $n\to\infty$. In this article, we extend this result to the case when the only condition on $K$ is that a ball rolls freely in $K$.

On the cardinality of sumsets in torsion-free groups

Let $A, B$ be finite subsets of a torsion-free group $G$. We prove that for every positive integer $k$ there is a $c(k)$ such that if $|B|\ge c(k)$ then the inequality $|AB|\ge |A|+|B|+k$ holds unless a left translate of $A$ is contained in a cyclic subgroup. We obtain $c(k)<c_0k^{6}$ for arbitrary torsion-free groups, and $c(k)<c_0k^{3}$ for groups with the unique product property, where $c_0$ is an absolute constant. We give examples to show that $c(k)$ is at least quadratic in $k$.

Stability results for the volume of random simplices

It is known that for a convex body K in R^d of volume one, the expected volume of random simplices in K is minimised if K is an ellipsoid, and for d = 2, maximised if K is a triangle. Here we provide corresponding stability estimates.

Stability of some versions of the Prékopa-Leindler inequality

Two consequences of the stability version of the one dimensional Prékopa-Leindler inequality are presented. One is the stability version of the Blaschke-Santaló inequality, and the other is a stability version of the Prékopa-Leindler inequality for even functions in higher dimensions, where a recent stability version of the Brunn-Minkowski inequality is also used in an essential way.
