Underlying mechanisms of phase transitions in scalar-tensor theories

Spontaneous scalarization phenomenon in scalar-tensor gravity is known to be a form of phase transition, and it was recently shown that the order of this transition changes depending on the parameters of the theory. There exists a phenomenological description of this result based on Landau theory, but the underlying mechanisms which determine the coefficients of the Landau expansion were unknown. In this study we calculate these coefficients starting from first principles. To this end, we start with an energy functional that describes the nonlinear behavior of the theory, and reduce it to an energy function. This allows us to explain the previously observed, but not well-understood, features of the scalarization phase transition, and enables us to predict which phase transition order will be present for which coupling function or in which regime of the parameter space. The details of the phase transition determine certain astrophysical observables such as signals sourced by transitions from metastable states in first-order scalarization. Thus, predicting these details is an important part of understanding scalarization itself.

Potentially healthy time evolution in interacting $p$-form fields

It was recently discovered that many self-interacting vector fields can have healthy time evolution when field amplitudes are small, however, further dynamics becomes impossible if the norm of the field reaches a certain finite value. This result was also generalized to higher form fields using the fact that vector fields can also be viewed as 1-form fields. However, other recent work demonstrated that some exceptional vector field theories do not suffer from such problems if the self-interaction term is chosen in a specific way. Here, we study whether a similar exception exists for $p$-form fields in general. We show that, in 4 spacetime dimensions, 3-form fields with self interaction can indeed have healthy time evolution similarly to vectors. However, the analogous coupling terms still lead to loss of hyperbolicity for 2-form fields. We study the reasons for these differences, and comment on directions to generalize our findings. We also demonstrate that eliminating the mass term, one of the proposals to build healthy self-interacting vector field theories, moves the singularity to other parts of the equations of motion, hence, most likely does not provide well-posed time evolution.

Nature of phase transitions and metastability in scalar-tensor theories

Compact stars above a critical stellar mass develop large scalar fields in some scalar-tensor theories. This scenario, called spontaneous scalarization, has been an intense topic of study since it passes weak-field gravity tests naturally while providing clear observables in the strong-field regime. The underlying mechanism for the onset of scalarization is often depicted as a second-order phase transition. Here, we show that a first-order phase transition is in fact the most common mechanism. This means metastability and transitions between locally stable compact object configurations are much more likely than previously believed, opening vast new avenues for observational prospects.

Aspects of time evolution in $p$-form field theories

We show that higher form fields, specifically 2- and 3-forms in four spacetime dimensions, suffer from loss of hyperbolicity when they have self interaction. The equations of motion lose their wave-like characteristic in certain parts of the configuration space, and such problematic regions can also be reached dynamically from healthy initial data. These findings are analogous to recent results for vector fields, which are equivalently 1-forms, however, the details of the pathology can be different for higher forms. We also show that the possibility of more than one self interaction term in higher forms also leads to the amelioration of hyperbolicity problems.

Crossing the singularity of a gravitational wave collision

A reformulation of general relativity inspired by the Belinski-Khalatnikov-Lifshitz conjecture had been introduced by Ashtekar, Henderson and Sloan which is based on variables closely related to the basic variables of loop quantum gravity, thereby providing a way of classically analyzing singularities that may be carried over to the quantum theory. It is reasonable to expect that these variables are regular at generic spacelike singularities. This has been shown on various examples -- particularly, cosmological spacetimes. In this study we extend this analysis to the singularities of gravitational wave collision spacetimes, which are the result of the mutual focusing of the two waves. We focus on two specific examples and explicitly confirm that the said variables are regular at the singularity and can be smoothly continued beyond it.

Loss of hyperbolicity and tachyons in generalized Proca theories

Various groups recently demonstrated that the time evolution of simplest self-interacting vector fields, those with self-interaction potentials, can break down after a finite duration in what is called loss of hyperbolicity. We establish that this is not an isolated issue, and other generalizations of the Proca theory suffer from the same problem. Specifically, we show that vector field theories with derivative self-interactions have a similar pathology. For this, we derive the effective metric that governs the dynamics, and show that it can change signature during time evolution. We also show that, generalized Proca theories may suffer from tachyonic instabilities as well, which lead to another form of unphysical behavior.

Constraining scalar-tensor theories using neutron star mass and radius measurements

We use neutron star mass and radius measurements to constrain the spontaneous scalarization phenomenon in scalar-tensor theories using Bayesian analysis. Neutron star structures in this scenario can be significantly different from the case of general relativity, which can be used to constrain the theory parameters. We utilize this idea to obtain lower bounds on the coupling parameter $β$ for the case of massless scalars. These constraints are currently weaker than the ones coming from binary observations, and they have relatively low precision due to the approximations in our method. Nevertheless, our results clearly demonstrate the power of the mass-radius data in testing gravity, and can be further improved with future observations. The picture is different for massive scalars, for which the same data is considerably less effective in constraining the theory parameters in an unexpected manner. We identify the main reason for this to be a large high-likelihood region in the parameter space where deviations from general relativity are relatively small. We hope this initial study to be an invitation to use neutron star structure measurements more commonly to test alternative theories in general.

A model of non-minimally coupled gravitation and electromagnetism in (1+2) dimensions

Following earlier works of Dereli and collaborators, we study a three dimensional toy model where we extend the topologically massive gravity with electrodynamics by the most general $RF^2$-type non-minimal coupling terms. Here $R$ denotes the possible curvature terms and $F$ denotes the electromagnetic 2-form. We derive the variational field equations and look for exact solutions on constant negative curvature space-times with a constant, self-dual electromagnetic field. The notion of self-dual electromagnetic fields in three dimensions is introduced by Dereli and collaborators in the study of exact solutions of models with gravity-electromagnetism couplings. We note the conditions that the parameters of the model have to satisfy for these self-dual solutions to exist.

Generalized disformal coupling leads to spontaneous tensorization

We show that gravity theories involving disformally transformed metrics in their matter coupling lead to spontaneous growth of various fields in a similar fashion to the spontaneous scalarization scenario in scalar-tensor theories. Scalar-dependent disformal transformations have been investigated in this context, and our focus is understanding the transformations that depend on more general fields. We show that vector-dependent disformal couplings can be obtained in various different ways, each leading to spontaneous vectorization as indicated by the instabilities in linearized equations of motion. However, we also show that spontaneous growth is not evident beyond vectors. For example, we could not identify a spontaneous growth mechanism for a spinor field through disformal transformations, even though there is a known example for conformal transformations. This invites further work on the fundamental differences between the two types of metric transformations. We argue that our results are relevant for observations in strong gravity such as gravitational wave detections due to their promise of large deviations from general relativity in this regime.

Hamilton-Jacobi Formulation of the Thermodynamics of Einstein-Born-Infeld-AdS Black Holes

A Hamilton-Jacobi formalism for thermodynamics was formulated by Rajeev [Ann. Phys. 323, 2265 (2008)] based on the contact structure of the odd dimensional thermodynamic phase space. This allows one to derive the equations of state of a family of substances by solving a Hamilton-Jacobi equation (HJE). In the same work it was applied to chargeless non-rotating black holes, and the use of Born-Infeld electromagnetism was proposed to apply it to charged black holes as well. This paper fulfills this suggestion by deriving the HJE for charged non-rotating black holes using Born-Infeld theory and a negative cosmological constant. The most general solution of this HJE is found. It is shown that there exists solutions which are distinct from the equations of state of the Einstein-Born-Infeld-AdS black hole. The meaning of these solutions is discussed.
