Effect of junction critical current disorder in superconducting quantum interference filter arrays

In this study, we investigated the performance of two 2D superconducting quantum interference filter (SQIF) arrays fabricated from YBCO thin films at a temperature of 77 K. Each array consisted of 6 Josephson junctions (JJs) in parallel and 167 in series. We conducted both experimental and theoretical analyses, measuring the arrays' voltage responses to an applied magnetic field and their voltage versus bias-current characteristics. To properly model the planar array layouts, our theoretical model used the stream function approach and also included the Johnson noise in the JJs. The model further divides the superconducting current density of the arrays into its Meissner current, circulating current, and bias current parts for practicality. Since the fabrication process of YBCO thin films cannot produce identical JJ critical currents, we assumed a log-normal distribution to model the JJ critical current disorder. Our model predictions, with a JJ critical current spread of 50%, agreed well with our experimental data. Using our model, we were able to study the dependence of the voltage modulation depth on critical current disorder and London penetration depth. We also analyzed the observed reflection asymmetries of the voltage versus magnetic field characteristics, which might provide insight into the degree of critical current disorder. Overall, our findings suggest that the use of YBCO thin films in SQIF arrays is promising, despite the critical current disorder inherent in their fabrication process. Our study highlights the importance of theoretical modeling in understanding the performance of superconducting devices and provides insights that could inform the design of future SQIF arrays.

A theoretical model for parallel SQUID arrays with fluxoid focussing

We have developed a comprehensive theoretical model for predicting the magnetic field response of a parallel SQUID array in the voltage state. The model predictions are compared with our experimental data from a parallel SQUID array made of a YBCO thin-film patterned into wide tracks, busbars and leads, with eleven step-edge Josephson junctions. Our theoretical model uses the Josephson equations for resistively shunted junctions as well as the second Ginzburg-Landau equation to derive a system of coupled first-order nonlinear differential equations to describe the time-evolution of the Josephson junction phase differences which includes Johnson noise. Employing the second London equation and Biot-Savart's law, the supercurrent density distribution is calculated, using the stream function approach, which leads to a 2D second-order linear Fredholm integro-differential equation for the stream function with time-dependent boundary conditions. The novelty of the model is that it calculates the stream function everywhere in the thin-film structure to determine during the time-evolution the fluxoids for each SQUID array hole. Our numerical model calculations are compared with our experimental data and predict the bias-current versus voltage and the voltage versus magnetic field response with unprecedented accuracy. The model elucidates the importance to fully take Meissner shielding and current crowding into account in order to properly describe fluxoid focussing and bias-current injection. Furthermore, our model illustrates the failure of the simple lumped-element approach to describe a parallel SQUID array with a wide thin-film structure.

Thermodynamic Properties of the Anisotropic Frustrated Spin-chain Compound Linarite PbCuSO$_4$(OH)$_2$

We present a comprehensive macroscopic thermodynamic study of the quasi-one-dimensional (1D) $s = \tfrac{1}{2}$ frustrated spin-chain system linarite. Susceptibility, magnetization, specific heat, magnetocaloric effect, magnetostriction, and thermal-expansion measurements were performed to characterize the magnetic phase diagram. In particular, for magnetic fields along the b axis five different magnetic regions have been detected, some of them exhibiting short-range-order effects. The experimental magnetic entropy and magnetization are compared to a theoretical modelling of these quantities using DMRG and TMRG approaches. Within the framework of a purely 1D isotropic model Hamiltonian, only a qualitative agreement between theory and the experimental data can be achieved. Instead, it is demonstrated that a significant symmetric anisotropic exchange of about 10% is necessary to account for the basic experimental observations, including the 3D saturation field, and which in turn might stabilize a triatic (three-magnon) multipolar phase.

Weak inter-band coupling in Mg$^{10}$B$_{2}$: a specific heat analysis

The superconducting state of Mg$^{10}$B$_{2}$ is investigated by specific heat measurements in detail. The specific heat in the normal state is analyzed using a recently developed computer code. This allows for an extraction of the electronic specific heat in the superconducting state with high accuracy and a fair determination of the main lattice features. One of the two investigated samples shows a hump in the specific heat at low temperatures within the superconducting state, accompanied by an unusual low value of the small gap, $Δ_π(0)=1.32 meV$, pointing to a very weak inter-band coupling. This sample allows for a detailed analysis of the contribution from the $π$-band to the electronic specific heat in the superconducting state. Therefore the usual analysis method is modified, to include the individual conservation of entropy of both bands. From analyzing the deviation function $D(t)$ of MgB$_{2}$, the theoretically predicted weak inter-band coupling scenario is confirmed.

The role of carbon for superconductivity in MgC$_{x}$Ni$_{3}$ from specific heat

The influence of carbon deficiency on superconductivity of MgCNi$_{3}$ is investigated by specific heat measurements in the normal and superconducting state. In order to perform a detailed analysis of the normal state specific heat, a computer code is developed which allows for an instantaneous estimate of the main features of the lattice dynamics. By analyzing the evolution of the lattice vibrations within the series and simultaneously considering the visible mass enhancement, the loss in the electron-phonon coupling can be attributed to significant changes of the prominent Ni vibrations. The present data well supports the recently established picture of strong electron-phonon coupling and ferromagnetic spin fluctuations in this compound.

Tuning Heavy Fermion Systems into Quantum Criticality by Magnetic Field

We discuss a series of thermodynamic, magnetic and electrical transport experiments on the two heavy fermion compounds CeNi2Ge2 and YbRh2Si2 in which magnetic fields, B, are used to tune the systems from a Non-Fermi liquid (NFL) into a field-induced FL state. Upon approaching the quantum-critical points from the FL side by reducing B we analyze the heavy quasiparticle (QP) mass and QP-QP scattering cross sections. For CeNi2Ge2 the observed behavior agrees well with the predictions of the spin-density wave (SDW) scenario for three-dimensional (3D) critical spin-fluctuations. By contrast, the observed singularity in YbRh2Si2 cannot be explained by the itinerant SDW theory for neither 3D nor 2D critical spinfluctuations. Furthermore, we investigate the magnetization M(B) at high magnetic fields. For CeNi2Ge2 a metamagnetic transition is observed at 43 T, whereas for YbRh2Si2 a kink-like anomaly occurs at 10 T in M vs B (applied along the easy basal plane) above which the heavy fermion state is completely suppressed.

Anisotropic magnetic behavior of GdBa_2Cu_3O_{6+y} single crystals

Magnetic properties of high-quality Al-free nonsuperconducting GdBa_2Cu_3O_{6+y} single crystals grown by flux method have been studied. The magnetic anisotropy below the Néel temperature T_N~2.3K corresponds to the direction of Gd^{3+} magnetic moments along the tetragonal c-axis. At T < T_N clear indications of spin-flop transitions for H||c have been observed on magnetization curves at H_{sf}~10kOe. Magnetic phase diagrams have been obtained for H||c as well as for H||ab. A pronounced anisotropy in the magnetic susceptibility (unexpected for Gd-based compounds) has been found above T_N.

Comparative Study of Dense Bulk MgB$_2$ Materials Prepared by Different Methods

We report on the results of a comparative investigation of highly dense bulk MgB$_2$ samples prepared by three methods: (i) hot deformation; (ii) high pressure sintering; and (iii) mechanical alloying of Mg and B powders with subsequent hot compaction. All types of samples were studied by ac-susceptibility, dc-magnetization and resistivity measurements in magnetic fields up to $μ_0H=160$ kOe. A small but distinct anisotropy of the upper critical field $H_{c2}^{a,b}/H_{c2}^{c}\sim1.2$ connected with some texture of MgB$_2$ grains was found for the hot deformed samples. The samples prepared by high pressure sintering as well as by mechanical alloying show improved superconducting properties, including high upper critical fields $H_{c2}$ ($μ_0H_{c2}(0)\sim23$ T), irreversibility fields $H_{irr}$ which are strongly shifted towards higher values $H_{irr}(T)\sim0.8H_{c2}(T)$ and high critical current $J_c$ ($J_c=10^5$ A/cm$^2$ at 20 K and 1 T).

Improved superconducting properties in nanocrystalline bulk MgB_2

Highly dense nanocrystalline MgB_2 bulk superconductors with distinctly improved pinning were prepared by mechanical alloying of Mg and B powders and hot compaction at ambient temperatures. The nanocrystalline samples reveal high critical current densities of 105 A/cm2 at 20 K and 1 T together with a strongly shifted irreversibility line towards higher fields resulting in H_irr(T) ~ 0.8 H_c2(T), whereas typically H_irr(T) ~ 0.5 H_c2(T) is observed for bulk untextured samples. These values exceed that of all other so far reported bulk samples and are in the range of the values of thin films. The improved pinning of this material which mainly consists of spherical grains of about 40-100 nm in size is attributed to the large number of grain boundaries.

Magnetic anomalies in the spin chain system, Sr$_3$Cu$_{1-x}$Zn$_x$IrO$_6$

We report the results of ac and dc magnetization (M) and heat-capacity (C) measurements on the solid solution, Sr$_3$Cu$_{1-x}$Zn$_x$IrO$_6$. While the Zn end member is known to form in a rhombohedral pseudo one-dimensional K$_4$CdCl$_6$ structure with an antiferromagnetic ordering temperature of (T$_N$ =) 19 K, the Cu end member has been reported to form in a monoclinically distorted form with a Curie temperature of (T$_C$ =) 19 K. The magnetism of the Zn compound is found to be robust to synthetic conditions and is broadly consistent with the behavior known in the literature. However, we find a lower magnetic ordering temperature (T$_o$) for our Cu compound (~ 13 K), thereby suggesting that T$_o$ is sensitive to synthetic conditions. The Cu sample appears to be in a spin-glass-like state at low temperatures, judged by a frequency dependence of ac magnetic susceptibility and a broadening of the C anomaly at the onset of magnetic ordering, in sharp contrast to earlier proposals. Small applications of magnetic field, however, drive this system to ferromagnetism as inferred from the M data. Small substitutions for Cu/Zn (x = 0.75 or 0.25) significantly depress magnetic ordering; in other words, T$_o$ varies non-monotonically with x (T$_o$ ~ 6, 3 and 4 K for x = 0.25, 0.5, and 0.67 respectively). The plot of inverse susceptibility versus temperature is non-linear in the paramagnetic state as if correlations within (or among) the magnetic chains continuously vary with temperature. The results establish

Sr$_3$CuIrO$_6$, a spin-chain compound with random ferromagnetic-antiferromagnetic interactions

Ac and dc magnetization and heat-capacity (C) measurements performed on the pseudo-one-dimensional compound Sr$_3$CuIrO$_6$ reveal a competition between antiferromagnetic (AF) and ferromagnetic (F) exchange couplings, as evidenced by frequency dependence of ac susceptibility and by the absence of a C anomaly at the magnetic transition. The value of the saturation moment (about 0.35 $μ_B$/formula unit) is much smaller than expected for ferromagnetism from the two S=1/2 ions (Cu and Ir). Thus, this compound is not a ferromagnet in zero magnetic field, in contrast to earlier beliefs. Of particular importance is the finding that the value of the magnetic ordering temperature is sample dependent, sensitive to synthetic conditions resulting from deviations in oxygen/Cu content. We propose that this compound serves as a unique model system to test theories on random AF-F interaction in a chain system, considering that this competition can be tuned without any chemical substitution.

Fully dense MgB_2 superconductor textured by hot deformation

Bulk textured MgB_2 material of nearly full density showing a weak c-axis alignment of the hexagonal MgB_2 grains parallel to the pressure direction was obtained by hot deformation of a stoichiometric MgB_2 pellet prepared by a gas-solid reaction. The texture of the material was verified by comparing the x-ray diffraction patterns of the hot deformed material with isotropic MgB_2 powder. A small, but distinct anisotropy of the upper critical field up to Hc2^{a,b}/Hc2^{c}~1.2 depending on degree of texture was found by resistance and susceptibility measurements. No anisotropy of the critical current density determined from magnetization measurements was found for the textured material.

Electronic structure and weak electron-phonon coupling in TaB$_2$

We present electronic structure calculations together with resistivity, susceptibility, and specific heat measurements for TaB$_2$ to search for the recently contradictorily reported superconductivity and to study related normal state properties. We ascribe the absence of superconductivity down to 1.5 K for our TaB$_2$ samples to the generally weak electron phonon coupling derived from comparison of the calculated and measured specific heat constants. For the E$_{2g}$ and the B$_{1g}$ $Γ$ point phonons we derive from the calculated deformation potentials very small electron phonon couplings for these modes, opposite to the strong coupling of the E$_{2g}$ mode in MgB$_2$, probably responsible for its high $T_c$. In comparison to MgB$_2$, we discuss the origin of the quite different features in the density of states and of the Fermi surfaces. The differences are mainly due to the strong hybridization between Ta 5$d$ and B 2$p$ states outside the hexagonal basis plane.

Specific heat and disorder in the mixed state of non-magnetic borocarbides

The temperature and magnetic field dependence of the specific heat cp(T,H) in the superconducting mixed state as well as the upper critical field Hc2(T) have been measured for polycrystalline Y_xLu_{1-x}Ni_2B_2C and Y(Ni_{1-y}Pt_y)_2B_2C samples. The linear-in-T electronic specific heat contribution gamma(H)T exhibits significant deviations from the usual linear-in-H law for all x and y the transition metal site (T) resulting in a disorder dependent negative curvature of gamma(H). The deviations from that linear behaviour of our unsubstituted samples are the largest reported so far for any superconductor. The H_c2(T) data point to the quasi-clean limit for (Y,Lu)-substitutions and to a transition to the quasi-dirty limit for (Ni,Pt)-substitutions. The gamma(H) dependence is discussed in the unitary d-wave as well as in the quasi-clean s-wave limits. From a consideration of gamma(H) data only, d-wave pairing cannot be ruled out.

Upper critical field and irreversibility line in superconducting MgB_2

The upper critical field Hc2(T) of sintered pellets of the recently discovered MgB_2 superconductor was investigated by transport, ac susceptibility and dc magnetization measurements in magnetic fields up to 16 T covering a temperature range between Tc ~ 39 K and T = 3 K ~ 0.1Tc. The temperature dependence of the upper critical field, Hc2(T), shows a positive curvature near Tc similar to that found for the borocarbides YNi_2B_2C and LuNi_2B_2C indicating that MgB_2 is in the clean limit. The irreversibility line was consistently determined from dc magnetization measurements and from the imaginary component of ac susceptibility. The irreversibility field was found to increase up to 8.5 T at 10 K.

The upper critical field in superconducting MgB_2

The upper critical field Hc2(T) of sintered pellets of the recently discovered MgB_2 superconductor was investigated in magnetic fields up to 16 T. The upper critical field of the major fraction of the investigated sample was determined from ac susceptibility and resistance data and was found to increase up to Hc2(0) = 13 T at T = 0 corresponding to a coherence length of 5.0 nm. A small fraction of the sample exhibits higher upper critical fields which were measured both resistively and by dc magnetization measurements. The temperature dependence of the upper critical field, Hc2(T), shows a positive curvature near Tc and at intermediate temperatures. This positive curvature of Hc2(T) is similar to that found for the borocarbides YNi_2B_2C and LuNi_2B_2C indicating that MgB_2 is in the clean limit.

Magnetic properties of Gd_{1-x}Pr_xBa_2Cu_3O_{7-y} single crystals

Magnetic properties were studied for the high quality Al-free orthorhombic Gd_{1-x}Pr_xBa_2Cu_3O_{7-y} single crystals (0<=x<=1.0) grown by the flux method. An indication on the interaction between the Pr and Cu(2) magnetic sublattices was found for Pr123. Different signs of magnetic anisotropy were established for the Pr and Gd ions at low temperatures. It was also shown that superconductivity reported by Zou et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 80 (1998) 1074] for Pr123 single crystals grown by TSZF method seems to be connected with partial substitution of Ba for the Pr-sites.

PrBa_2Cu_3O_{7-y}: Superconducting or Anomalously Magnetic?

In PrBa_2Cu_3O_{7-y} (Pr123) single crystals grown by the flux method the kink in the magnetic susceptibility chi_{ab}(T), connected with AFM ordering of Pr, disappears after field cooling (FC) in a field H||ab-plane whereas the kink in chi_c(T) remains unchanged after FC in H||c-axis. This seems to be connected with the coupling between the Pr and Cu(2) sublattices. The Curie constant C determined from the data reported for superconducting Pr123 crystals grown by traveling-solvent floating zone (TSFZ) method (Zou et al, Phys. Rev. Lett., 80, 1074 (1998)) is about one half of that for our flux crystals. Thus, the concentration of Pr in TSFZ crystal seems to be about one half of the nominal for Pr123. Therefore, superconductivity in TSFZ samples is connected most probably with the partial substitution of Pr by nonmagnetic Ba.
