On the effect of derivative interactions in quantum field theory

There exist several good reasons why one may wish to add a total derivative to an interaction in quantum field theory, e.g., in order to improve the perturbative construction. Unlike in classical field theory, adding derivatives in general changes the theory. The analysis whether and how this can be prevented, is presently limited to perturbative orders $g^n$ , $n \leq 3$. We drastically simplify it by an all-orders formula, which also allows to answer some salient structural questions. The method is part of a larger program to (re)derive interactions of particles by quantum consistency conditions, rather than a classical principle of gauge invariance.

Infinite dimensional Lie algebras in 4D conformal quantum field theory

The concept of global conformal invariance (GCI) opens the way of applying algebraic techniques, developed in the context of 2-dimensional chiral conformal field theory, to a higher (even) dimensional space-time. In particular, a system of GCI scalar fields of conformal dimension two gives rise to a Lie algebra of harmonic bilocal fields, V_m(x,y), where the m span a finite dimensional real matrix algebra M closed under transposition. The associative algebra M is irreducible iff its commutant M' coincides with one of the three real division rings. The Lie algebra of (the modes of) the bilocal fields is in each case an infinite dimensional Lie algebra: a central extension of sp(infty,R) corresponding to the field R of reals, of u(infty, infty) associated to the field C of complex numbers, and of so*(4 infty) related to the algebra H of quaternions. They give rise to quantum field theory models with superselection sectors governed by the (global) gauge groups O(N), U(N), and U(N,H)=Sp(2N), respectively.

Pole structure and biharmonic fields in conformal QFT in four dimensions

Imposing Huygens' Principle in a 4D Wightman QFT puts strong constraints on its algebraic and analytic structure. These are best understood in terms of ``biharmonic fields'', whose properties reflect the presence of infinitely many conserved tensor currents. In particular, a universal third-order partial differential equation is derived for the most singular parts of connected scalar correlation functions. This PDE gives rise to novel restrictions on the pole structure of higher correlation functions. An example of a six-point function is presented that cannot arise from free fields. This example is exploited to study the locality properties of biharmonic fields.

The classification of non-local chiral CFT with c<1

All non-local but relatively local irreducible extensions of Virasoro chiral CFTs with c<1 are classified. The classification, which is a prerequisite for the classification of local c<1 boundary CFTs on a two-dimensional half-space, turns out to be 1 to 1 with certain pairs of A-D-E graphs with distinguished vertices.

Partial wave expansion and Wightman positivity in conformal field theory

A new method for computing exact conformal partial wave expansions is developed and applied to approach the problem of Hilbert space (Wightman) positivity in a non-perturbative four-dimensional quantum field theory model. The model is based on the assumption of global conformal invariance on compactified Minkowski space. Bilocal fields arising in the harmonic decomposition of the operator product expansion prove to be a powerful instrument in exploring the field content. In particular, in the theory of a field of dimension 4 which has the properties of a (gauge invariant) Lagrangian, the scalar field contribution to the 6-point function of the twist 2 bilocal field is analyzed with the aim to separate the free field part from the nontrivial part.

On local boundary CFT and non-local CFT on the boundary

The holographic relation between local boundary conformal quantum field theories (BCFT) and their non-local boundary restrictions is reviewed, and non-vacuum BCFT's, whose existence was conjectured previously, are constructed.

Algebraic quantization of the closed bosonic string

The gauge invariant observables of the closed bosonic string are quantized without anomalies in four space-time dimensions by constructing their quantum algebra in a manifestly covariant approach. The quantum algebra is the kernel of a derivation on the universal envelopping algebra of an infinite-dimensional Lie algebra. The search for Hilbert space representations of this algebra is separated from its construction, and postponed.

Generalized free fields and the AdS-CFT correspondence

Motivated by structural issues in the AdS-CFT correspondence, the theory of generalized free fields is reconsidered. A stress-energy tensor for the generalized free field is constructed as a limit of Wightman fields. Although this limit is singular, it fulfils the requirements of a conserved local density for the Poincar'e generators. An explicit "holographic" formula relating the Klein-Gordon field on AdS to generalized free fields on Minkowski space-time is provided, and contrasted with the "algebraic" notion of holography. A simple relation between the singular stress-energy tensor and the canonical AdS stress-energy tensor is exhibited.

A comment on the dual field in the AdS-CFT correspondence

In the perturbative AdS-CFT correspondence, the dual field whose source are the prescribed boundary values of a bulk field in the functional integral, and the boundary limit of the quantized bulk field are the same thing. This statement is due to the fact that Witten graphs are boundary limits of the corresponding Feynman graphs for the bulk fields, and hence the dual conformal correlation functions are limits of bulk correlation functions. This manifestation of duality is analyzed in terms of the underlying functional integrals of different structure.

Locality and modular invariance in 2D conformal QFT

The relations and differences between various classification problems arising in the context of local two-dimensional conformal QFT, modular invariants, and subfactors are discussed. The extent to which locality implies modular invariance, is exhibited.

Fusion rules for the continuum sectors of the Virasoro algebra with c=1

The Virasoro algebra with c=1 has a continuum of superselection sectors characterized by the ground state energy h. Only a discrete subset of sectors arises by restriction of representations of the SU(2) current algebra at level k=1. The remaining continuum of sectors is obtained with the help of (localized) homomorphisms into the current algebra. The fusion product of continuum sectors with discrete sectors is computed. A new method of determining the sector of a state is used.

On a class of bounded quantum fields

Local quantum fields in 1+1 dimensions can have bounded field operators. The class of such fields which in addition obey Huygens' principle (time-like commutativity) and conformal covariance, is completely determined.

Local Quantum Observables in the Anti-deSitter - Conformal QFT Correspondence

Quantum field theory on d+1-dimensional anti-deSitter space-time admits a re-interpretation as a quantum field theory with conformal symmetry on d-dimensional Minkowski space-time. This conjecture originally emerged from string theory considerations. Here, it is proven in a general framework by an explicit identification between the local observables of the two corresponding theories.

Canonical tensor product subfactors

Canonical tensor product subfactors (CTPS's) describe, among other things, the embedding of chiral observables in two-dimensional conformal quantum field theories. A new class of CTPS's is constructed some of which are associated with certain modular invariants, thereby establishing the expected existence of the corresponding two-dimensional theories.

New subfactors associated with closed systems of sectors

A theorem is derived which (i) provides a new class of subfactors which may be interpreted as generalized asymptotic subfactors, and which (ii) ensures the existence of two-dimensional local quantum field theories associated with certain modular invariant matrices.

Algebraic Holography

A rigorous (and simple) proof is given that there is a one-to-one correspondence between causal anti-deSitter covariant quantum field theories on anti-deSitter space and causal conformally covariant quantum field theories on its conformal boundary. The correspondence is given by the explicit identification of observables localized in wedge regions in anti-deSitter space and observables localized in double-cone regions in its boundary. It takes vacuum states into vacuum states, and positive-energy representations into positive-energy representations.

Chiral Observables and Modular Invariants

Various definitions of chiral observables in a given Moebius covariant two-dimensional theory are shown to be equivalent. Their representation theory in the vacuum Hilbert space of the 2D theory is studied. It shares the general characteristics of modular invariant partition functions, although SL(2,Z) transformation properties are not assumed. First steps towards classification are made.
