Complementarity and uncertainty relations for matter wave interferometry

We establish a rigorous quantitative connection between (i) the interferometric duality relation for which-way information and fringe visibility and (ii) Heisenberg's uncertainty relation for position and modular momentum. We apply our theory to atom interferometry, wherein spontaneously emitted photons provide which way information, and unambiguously resolve the challenge posed by the metamaterial `perfect lens' to complementarity and to the Heisenberg-Bohr interpretation of the Heisenberg microscope thought experiment.

Photons as quasi-charged particles

The Schrodinger motion of a charged quantum particle in an electromagnetic potential can be simulated by the paraxial dynamics of photons propagating through a spatially inhomogeneous medium. The inhomogeneity induces geometric effects that generate an artificial vector potential to which signal photons are coupled. This phenomenon can be implemented with slow light propagating through an a gas of double-Lambda atoms in an electromagnetically-induced transparency setting with spatially varied control fields. It can lead to a reduced dispersion of signal photons and a topological phase shift of Aharonov-Bohm type.

Raman Adiabatic Transfer of Optical States

We analyze electromagnetically induced transparency and light storage in an ensemble of atoms with multiple excited levels (multi-Lambda configuration) which are coupled to one of the ground states by quantized signal fields and to the other one via classical control fields. We present a basis transformation of atomic and optical states which reduces the analysis of the system to that of EIT in a regular 3-level configuration. We demonstrate the existence of dark state polaritons and propose a protocol to transfer quantum information from one optical mode to another by an adiabatic control of the control fields.

Topological Coherent Modes in Trapped Bose Gas

The report reviews the problem of topological coherent modes, which are nonlinear collective states of Bose-condensed atoms. Such modes can be generated by means of alternating external fields, whose frequencies are in resonance with the transition frequencies between the related modes. The Bose gas with generated topological coherent modes is a collective nonlinear analog of a resonant atom. Such systems exhibit a variety of nontrivial effects, e.g.: interference fringes, interference current, mode locking, dynamic transitions, critical phenomena, chaotic motion, harmonic generation, parametric conversion, atomic squeezing, and entanglement production.

Dynamics of Bose-Einstein Condensates in One-Dimensional Optical Lattices in the Presence of Transverse Resonances

The dynamics of Bose-Einstein condensates in the lowest energy band of a one-dimensional optical lattice is generally disturbed by the presence of transversally excited resonant states. We propose an effective one-dimensional theory which takes these resonant modes into account and derive variational equations for large-scale dynamics. Several applications of the theory are discussed and a novel type of "triple soliton" is proposed, which consists of a superposition of a wavepacket at the upper band edge and two transversally excited wavepackets which are displaced in quasi-momentum space.

Detection of atomic entanglement and electromagnetically induced transparency in velocity-selective coherent population trapping

We investigate theoretically the optical properties of an atomic gas which has been cooled by the laser cooling method velocity-selective coherent population trapping. We demonstrate that the application of a weak laser pulse gives rise to a backscattered pulse, which is a direct signal for the entanglement in the atomic system, and which leads to single-particle entanglement on the few-photon level. If the pulse is applied together with the pump lasers, it also displays the phenomenon of electromagnetically induced transparency. We suggest that the effect should be observable in a gas of Rubidium atoms.

Geometric phase distributions for open quantum systems

In an open system, the geometric phase should be described by a distribution. We show that a geometric phase distribution for open system dynamics is in general ambiguous, but the imposition of reasonable physical constraints on the environment and its coupling with the system yields a unique geometric phase distribution that applies even for mixed states, non-unitary dynamics, and non-cyclic evolutions.

Multiple Coupling of Topological Coherent Modes of Trapped Atoms

The possibility of generating multiple coherent modes in trapped Bose gases is advanced. This requires the usage of several driving fields whose frequencies are tuned close to the corresponding transition frequencies. A general criterion is derived explaining when the driving fields, even being in perfect resonance, cannot generate the topological coherent modes. This criterion is termed the theorem of shape conservation. Bose-Einstein condensates with generated coherent modes display a number of interesting effects, such as: interference fringes, interference current, mode locking, dynamic transition, critical phenomena, chaotic motion, harmonic generation, parametric conversion, atomic squeezing, and entanglement production. Approximate solutions, based on the averaging techniques, are found to be in good agreement with direct numerical calculations for the Gross-Pitaevskii equation.

Resonant Generation of Topological Modes in Trapped Bose Gases

Trapped Bose atoms cooled down to temperatures below the Bose-Einstein condensation temperature are considered. Stationary solutions to the Gross-Pitaevskii equation (GPE) define the topological coherent modes, representing nonground-state Bose-Einstein condensates. These modes can be generated by means of alternating fields whose frequencies are in resonance with the transition frequencies between two collective energy levels corresponding to two different topological modes. The theory of resonant generation of these modes is generalized in several aspects: Multiple-mode formation is described; a shape-conservation criterion is derived, imposing restrictions on the admissible spatial dependence of resonant fields; evolution equations for the case of three coherent modes are investigated; the complete stability analysis is accomplished; the effects of harmonic generation and parametric conversion for the topological coherent modes are predicted. All considerations are realized both by employing approximate analytical methods as well as by numerically solving the GPE. Numerical solutions confirm all conclusions following from analytical methods.

Interference scheme to measure light-induced nonlinearities in Bose-Einstein condensates

Light-induced nonlinear terms in the Gross-Pitaevskii equation arise from the stimulated coherent exchange of photons between two atoms. For atoms in an optical dipole trap this effect depends on the spatial profile of the trapping laser beam. Two different laser beams can induce the same trapping potential but very different nonlinearities. We propose a scheme to measure light-induced nonlinearities which is based on this observation.

Dispersion management for atomic matter waves

We demonstrate the control of the dispersion of matter wave packets utilizing periodic potentials. This is analogous to the technique of dispersion management known in photon optics. Matter wave packets are realized by Bose-Einstein condensates of 87Rb in an optical dipole potential acting as a one-dimensional waveguide. A weak optical lattice is used to control the dispersion relation of the matter waves during the propagation of the wave packets. The dynamics are observed in position space and interpreted using the concept of effective mass. By switching from positive to negative effective mass, the dynamics can be reversed. The breakdown of the approximation of constant, as well as experimental signatures of an infinite effective mass are studied.

Ultracold Bose atoms in intense laser fields: intensity- and density-dependent effects

Starting from the first principles of nonrelativistic QED we have derived the system of Maxwell-Schrödinger equations, which can be used for theoretical description of atom optical phenomena at high densities of atoms and high intensities of the laser radiation. The role of multiple atomic transitions between ground and excited states in atom optics has been investigated. Nonlinear optical properties of interacting Bose gas are studied: formula for the refractive index has been derived and the polariton spectrum of a condensate interacting with an intense laser field has been investigated.

Local-field effect in atom optics of two-component Bose-Einstein condensates

Starting from the first principles of nonrelativistic QED we have developed the quantum theory of the interaction of a two-component ultracold atomic ensemble with the electromagnetic field of vacuum and laser photons. The main attention has been paid to the consistent consideration of dynamical dipole-dipole interactions in the radiation field. Taking into account local-field effects we have derived the system of Maxwell-Bloch equations. Optical properties of the two-component Bose gas are investigated. It is shown that the refractive index of the gas is given by the Maxwell-Garnett formula. All equations which are used up to now for the description of the behavior of an ultracold atomic ensemble in a radiation field can be obtained from our general system of equations in the low-density limit. Raman-Nath diffraction of the two-component atomic beam is investigated on the basis of our general system of equations.

What is the reference frame of an accelerated observer?

The general construction of extended refrence frames for noninertial observers in flat space is studied. It is shown that, if the observer moves inertially before and after an arbitrary acceleration and rotation, the region where reference frames can coincide with an inertial system is bounded for final velocities exceeding 0.6 c.
