Coulomb blockade oscillations of conductance in the regime of strong tunneling

We study the transport through a quantum dot coupled to two leads by single-mode point contacts. The linear conductance is calculated analytically as a function of a gate voltage and temperature T in the case when transmission coefficients of the contacts are close to unity. As a function of the gate voltage, the conductance shows Coulomb blockade oscillations. At low temperatures, the off-resonance conductance vanishes as T^2, in agreement with the theory of inelastic co-tunneling. Near a resonance, the low-energy physics is governed by a multi-channel Kondo fixed point.

TUNNELING SPECTROSCOPY OF QUANTUM CHARGE FLUCTUATIONS IN THE COULOMB BLOCKADE

We present a theory of Coulomb blockade oscillations in tunneling through a pair of quantum dots connected by a tunable tunneling junction. The positions and amplitudes of peaks in the linear conductance are directly related, respectively, to the ground state energy and to the dynamics of charge fluctuations. We study analytically both strong and weak interdot tunneling. As the tunneling decreases, the period of the peaks doubles, as observed experimentally. In the strong tunneling limit, we predict a striking power law temperature dependence of the peak amplitudes.

Theory of hopping magnetoresistance induced by Zeeman splitting

We present a study of hopping conductivity for a system of sites which can be occupied by more than one electron. At a moderate on-site Coulomb repulsion, the coexistence of sites with occupation numbers 0, 1, and 2 results in an exponential dependence of the Mott conductivity upon Zeeman splitting $μ_BH$. We show that the conductivity behaves as $\lnσ= (T/T_0)^{1/4}F(x)$, where $F$ is a universal scaling function of $x=μ_BH/T(T_0/T)^{1/4}$. We find $F(x)$ analytically at weak fields, $x \ll 1$, using a perturbative approach. Above some threshold $x_{\rm th}$, the function $F(x)$ attains a constant value, which is also found analytically. The full shape of the scaling function is determined numerically, from a simulation of the corresponding ``two color'' dimensionless percolation problem. In addition, we develop an approximate method which enables us to solve this percolation problem analytically at any magnetic field. This method gives a satisfactory extrapolation of the function $F(x)$ between its two limiting forms.

Coulomb blockade at almost perfect transmission

We study the equilibrium properties of a quantum dot connected to a bulk lead by a single-mode quantum point contact. The ground state energy and other thermodynamic characteristics of the grain show periodic dependence on the gate voltage (Coulomb blockade). We consider the case of almost perfect transmission, and show that the oscillations exist as long as the transmission coefficient of the contact is less than unity. Near the points where the dot charge is half-integer the thermodynamic characteristics show a non-analytic behavior identical to that of the two-channel spin-1/2 Kondo model. In particular, at any transmission coefficient the capacitance measured between the gate and the lead shows periodic logarithmic singularities as a function of the gate voltage.

Fermi Edge Singularities and Backscattering in a Weakly Interacting 1D Electron Gas

The photon-absorption edge in a weakly interacting one-dimensional electron gas is studied, treating backscattering of conduction electrons from the core hole exactly. Close to threshold, there is a power-law singularity in the absorption, $I(ε) \propto ε^{-α}$, with $α= 3/8 + δ_+/π- δ_+^2/2π^2$ where $δ_+$ is the forward scattering phase shift of the core hole. In contrast to previous theories, $α$ is finite (and universal) in the limit of weak core hole potential. In the case of weak backscattering $U(2k_F)$, the exponent in the power-law dependence of absorption on energy crosses over to a value $α= δ_+/π- δ_+^2/2π^2$ above an energy scale $ε^* \sim [U(2k_F)]^{1/γ}$, where $γ$ is a dimensionless measure of the electron-electron interactions.

Tunneling in One-Dimensional non-Luttinger Electron Liquid

The conductance of a weakly interacting electron gas in the presense of a single scatterer is found at arbitrary strength of the scattering potential. At weak interaction, a simple renormalization group approach can be used instead of the standard bosonization procedure. Our technique allows to take into account the {\em backscattering\/} of electrons that leads to a non-Luttinger-liquid behavior of the low-temperature conductance. In the presence of magnetic field, the backscattering may give rise to a peak in differential conductance at bias equal to the Zeeman energy.
