Intergranular flux pinning in underdoped and overdoped R(1-x)CaxBa2Cu3Oz (R=Y,Gd; x=0,0.2) samples

The temperature dependences of AC magnetic susceptibility at different magnetic field amplitudes and frequencies are investigated for underdoped and overdoped R(1-x)Ca(x)Ba(2)Cu(3)O(7-delta)(R=Y; Gd and x=0; 0.2) polycrystalline samples. The activation energy, Ea, for thermally assisted flux flow (TAFF) in intergranular region is determined. It was established that a correlation exists between the intergranular critical current and flux pinning activation energy. In underdoped samples the intergranular current shows S-I-S behaviour and the activation energy is small, while in overdoped samples the intergranular current is changed to S-N-S type and the activation energy increases. 2D pancake vortices are characteristic of underdoped samples, while 3D vortex system exists in overdoped samples. In fact we demonstrate that Ca substitution not only increases carrier concentration, but improves intergranular activation energy for TAFF.

Electrical transport and glassy response in strained thin La0.7Ca0.3MnO3 films

Magnetotransport properties of La0.7Ca0.3MnO3 thin films deposited on (100) LaAlO3 substrate were investigated. The balance between the charge ordered insulating phase and ferromagnetic metallic phase may account for a number of glassy features such as: significant hysteresis, memory effects and long-time resistivity relaxation. It was found that the resistance of La0.7Ca0.3MnO3 thin film decreases significantly upon applying electric current, in a wide temperature range 10 - 220 K. The magnetotransport properties of the strained thin films are discussed in the context of cross-coupling of charge, spin and strain.

Evidence for CuO conducting band splitting in the nodal direction of Bi-2212

Using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy with ultimate momentum resolution we have explicitly resolved the bilayer splitting in the nodal direction of Bi-2212. The splitting is observed in a wide doping range and, within the experimental uncertainty, its size does not depend on doping. The value of splitting derived from the experiment is in good agreement with that from band structure calculations which implies the absence of any electronic confinement to single planes within bilayers of Bi-2212. Other consequences of this finding are also discussed.

Superconducting gap in the presence of bilayer splitting in underdoped Bi(Pb)2212

The clearly resolved bilayer splitting in ARPES spectra of the underdoped Pb-Bi2212 compound rises the question of how the bonding and antibonding sheets of the Fermi surface are gapped in the superconducting state. Here we compare the superconducting gaps for both split components and show that within the experimental uncertainties they are identical. By tuning the relative intensity of the bonding and antibonding bands using different excitation conditions we determine the precise {\bf k}-dependence of the leading edge gap. Significant deviations from the simple cos($k_{x}$)-cos($k_{y}$) gap function for the studied doping level are detected.

Surprises in the doping dependence of the Fermi surface in Bi(Pb)-2212

A detailed and systematic ARPES investigation of the doping-dependence of the normal state Fermi surface (FS) of modulation-free (Pb,Bi)-2212 is presented. The FS does not change in topology away from hole-like at any stage. The data reveal, in addition, a number of surprises. Firstly the FS area does not follow the usual curve describing Tc vs x for the hole doped cuprates, but is down-shifted in doping by ca. 0.05 holes per Cu site, indicating either the break-down of Luttinger's theorem or the consequences of a significant bi-layer splitting of the FS. Secondly, the strong k-dependence of the FS width is shown to be doping independent. Finally, the relative strength of the shadow FS has a doping dependence mirroring that of Tc.

PrBa_2Cu_3O_{7-y}: Superconducting or Anomalously Magnetic?

In PrBa_2Cu_3O_{7-y} (Pr123) single crystals grown by the flux method the kink in the magnetic susceptibility chi_{ab}(T), connected with AFM ordering of Pr, disappears after field cooling (FC) in a field H||ab-plane whereas the kink in chi_c(T) remains unchanged after FC in H||c-axis. This seems to be connected with the coupling between the Pr and Cu(2) sublattices. The Curie constant C determined from the data reported for superconducting Pr123 crystals grown by traveling-solvent floating zone (TSFZ) method (Zou et al, Phys. Rev. Lett., 80, 1074 (1998)) is about one half of that for our flux crystals. Thus, the concentration of Pr in TSFZ crystal seems to be about one half of the nominal for Pr123. Therefore, superconductivity in TSFZ samples is connected most probably with the partial substitution of Pr by nonmagnetic Ba.

Hall-effect in LuNi_2B_2C and YNi_2B_2C borocarbides: a comparative study

The Hall effect in LuNi_2B_2C and YNi_2B_2C borocarbides has been investigated in normal and superconducting mixed states. The Hall resistivity rho_{xy} for both compounds is negative in the normal as well as in the mixed state and has no sign reversal below T_c typical for high-T_c superconductors. In the mixed state the behavior of both systems is quite similar. The scaling relation rho_{xy}\simρ_{xx}^β(ρ_{xx} is the longitudinal resistivity) was found with β=2.0 and 2.1 for annealed Lu- and Y-based compounds, respectively. The scaling exponent βdecreases with increasing degree of disorder and can be varied by annealing. This is attributed to a variation of the strength of flux pinning. In the normal state weakly temperature dependent Hall coefficients were observed for both compounds. A distinct nonlinearity in the ρ_{xy} dependence on field H was found for LuNi_2B_2C in the normal state below 40K, accompanied by a large magnetoresistance (MR) reaching +90% for H=160kOe at T=20K. At the same time for YNi_2B_2C only linear ρ_{xy}(H) dependences were observed in the normal state with an approximately three times lower MR value. This difference in the normal state behavior of the very similar Lu- and Y-based borocarbides seems to be connected with the difference in the topology of the Fermi surface of these compounds.

Hall-effect in LuNi_2B_2C in normal and superconducting mixed states

A distinct nonlinearity in the rho_{xy} dependence on field H was found in the normal state for T < 40K, accompanied by a large magnetoresistance reaching +90% for mu_0H=16T at T=20K. The scaling relation rho_{xy} ~ ρ_{xx}^β(ρ_{xx} is the longitudinal resistivity) was found in the mixed state, the value of βbeing dependent on the degree of disorder.

Anomalous magnetic ordering in PrBa_2Cu_3O_{7-y} single crystals: Evidence for magnetic coupling between the Cu and Pr sublattices

In Al-free PrBa_2Cu_3O_{7-y} single crystals the kink in the temperature dependence of magnetic susceptibility chi_{ab}(T), connected with Pr antiferromagnetic ordering, disappears after field cooling (FC) in a field H || ab-plane. The kink in chi_c(T) remains unchanged after FC in H || c-axis. As a possible explanation, freezing of the Cu magnetic moments, lying in the ab-plane, caused by FC in H || ab, hinders their reorientation and, due to coupling between the Pr and Cu(2) sublattices, ordering of the Pr^{3+} moments. A field induced phase transition and a field dependence of the Pr^{3+} ordering temperature have been found for both H || c and H || ab.
