Observation of Color-Suppressed $\overline{B}^0 \to D^{(*)0}X^0$ Decays

We report the first observation of color-suppressed $\overline{B}^0\to D^0 π^0$ and $D^{(*)0} ω$ decays and evidence of $\overline{B}^0 \to D^{*0} π^0$ and $D^{(*)0} η$. The branching fractions are found to be ${\cal B} (\overline{B}^0\to D^0 π^0) = (2.9 ^{+0.4}_{-0.3} \pm 0.6) \times 10^{-4}$, ${\cal B} (\overline{B}^0 \to D^0 ω) = (1.7 ^{+0.5 +0.3}_{-0.4 -0.4}) \times 10^{-4}$, and ${\cal B} (\overline{B}^0 \to D^{*0} ω) = (3.4 ^{+1.3}_{-1.1}\pm 0.8) \times 10^{-4}$. The analysis is based on a data sample of 21.3 fb$^{-1}$ collected at the $Υ(4S)$ resonance by the Belle detector at the KEKB $e^{+} e^{-}$ collider.

Observation of $B^+ \to χ_{c0} K^+ $

We report the first observation of the decay $B^+ \to χ_{c0} K^+$ using 21.3 fb$^{-1}$ of data collected by the Belle detector at the $Υ$(4S) resonance. The preliminary result for the branching fraction is ${\cal{B}}(B^+\to χ_{c0}K^+)=(8.0^{+2.7}_{-2.4}\pm 1.0\pm 1.1)\times 10^{-4}$ where the first error is statistical, the second is systematic, and the third comes from the uncertainty in the $χ_{c0}\toπ^+π^-$ branching fraction.

Study of three-body charmless B decays at Belle

Using a data sample of 21.3 fb$^{-1}$ collected by the Belle detector, three body charmless decays $B^+\to K^+ h^+ h^-$ have been studied. With no assumptions on the intermediate mechanisms, the following branching fractions have been measured for the first time $ {\cal{B}}(B^+\to K^+ π^- π^+) = (58.5\pm 7.1\pm 8.8)\times 10^{-6}$ and $ {\cal{B}}(B^+\to K^+ K^- K^+) = (37.0\pm 3.9\pm 4.4)\times 10^{-6}$. We also present the first observations of the decay mode $B^+\to K^{*0}(892)π^+$ with a branching fraction of ${\cal{B}}(B^+\to K^{*0}(892) π^+) = (16.7^{+3.7+2.1+3.0}_{-3.4-2.1-5.9})\times 10^{-6}$ and the decay mode $B^+\to f_0(980)K^+$ with a product branching fraction of ${\cal{B}}(B^+\to f_0(980) K^+)\times{\cal{B}}(f_0(980)\to π^+π^-) = (11.7^{+2.5+1.5+4.1}_{-2.7-1.5-1.0})\times 10^{-6}$.

Search for Direct CP Violation in B -> K pi Decays

We search for direct CP violation in flavor specific B -> K pi decays by measuring the rate asymmetry between charge conjugate modes. The search is performed on a data sample of 11.1 million B B bar events recorded on the Upsilon(4S) resonance by the Belle experiment at KEKB. We measure 90% confidence intervals in the partial rate asymmetry A_CP of -0.25 < A_CP(K-/+ pi+/-) < 0.37, -0.40 < A_CP(K-/+ pi^0) < 0.36, and -0.53 < A_CP(K^0 pi-/+) < 0.82. By combining the K-/+ pi+/- and K-/+ pi^0 final states, we conclude that -0.22 < A_CP[K-/+(pi+/- + pi^0)] < 0.25 at the 90% confidence level.

Observation of B->J/psi K1(1270)

We report the first observation of the exclusive decay process B->J/psi K1(1270) using a sample of 11.2M BBbar meson pairs collected in the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric e+e- collider. We measure branching fractions of Bf(B0 -> J/psi K10(1270) = (1.30 +-0.34 +-0.31)x10^-3 and Bf(B+ -> J/psi K1+(1270) = (1.80 +-0.34 +-0.39)x10-3, where the first error is statistical and the second systematic. These modes constitute approximately 15% of the total number of B -> J/psiX decays. No evidence is seen for B -> J/psi K1(1400) and we set an upper limit on this branching fraction. The K1(1270) -> K0pi+pi- decays have a substantial K0rho0 intermediate state component that may be useful for CP violation studies.

Observation of Cabibbo suppressed $B \to D^{(*)}K^-$ decays at Belle

Cabibbo-suppressed decays $B \to D^{(*)} K^-$ using a 10.4 fb$^{-1}$ data sample accumulated at the $Υ(4S)$ resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB $e^+ e^-$ storage ring. The high-momentum particle identification system of Belle is used to isolate signals for $B\to D^0 K^-$, $D^+K^-$, $D^{*0}K^-$ and $D^{*+}K^-$ from the $B\to D^{(*)}π^-$ decay processes which have much larger branching fractions. We report ratios of Cabibbo-suppressed to Cabibbo-favored branching fractions of: ${\cal B}(B^- \to D^0 K^-)/{\cal B}(B^- \to D^0π^-) = 0.079\pm0.009\pm0.006$; ${\cal B}(\bar{B^0} \to D^+ K^-)/{\cal B}(\bar{B^0} \to D^+π^-) = 0.068\pm0.015\pm0.007$; ${\cal B}(B^-\to D^{*0}K^-)/{\cal B}(B^-\to D^{*0}π^-) = 0.078 \pm 0.019 \pm 0.009$; and ${\cal B}(\bar{B}^0\to D^{*+}K^-)/{\cal B}(\bar{B}^0\to D^{*+}π^-)= 0.074 \pm 0.015 \pm 0.006$. The first error is statistical and the second is systematic. These are the first reported observations of the $B\to D^+K^-$, $D^{*0}K^-$ and $D^{*+}K^-$ decay processes.

Measurement of Branching Fractions for B->ππ, Kπand KK Decays

We report measurements of the branching fractions for $B^0\toπ^+π^-$, $K^+π^-$, $K^+K^-$ and $K^0π^0$, and $B^+\toπ^+π^0$, $K^+π^0$, $K^0π^+$ and $K^+\bar{K}{}^0$. The results are based on 10.4 fb$^{-1}$ of data collected on the $Υ$(4S) resonance at the KEKB $e^+e^-$ storage ring with the Belle detector, equipped with a high momentum particle identification system for clear separation of charged $π$ and $K$ mesons. We find ${\cal B}(B^0\toπ^+π^-) =(0.56^{+0.23}_{-0.20}\pm 0.04)\times 10^{-5}$, ${\cal B}(B^0\to K^+π^-) =(1.93^{+0.34 +0.15}_{-0.32 -0.06})\times 10^{-5}$, ${\cal B}(B^+\to K^+π^0) =(1.63^{+0.35 +0.16}_{-0.33 -0.18})\times 10^{-5}$, ${\cal B}(B^+\to K^0π^+) =(1.37^{+0.57 +0.19}_{-0.48 -0.18})\times 10^{-5}$, and ${\cal B}(B^0\to K^0π^0) =(1.60^{+0.72 +0.25}_{-0.59 -0.27})\times 10^{-5}$, where the first and second errors are statistical and systematic. We also set upper limits of ${\cal B}(B^+\toπ^+π^0)<1.34\times 10^{-5}$, ${\cal B}(B^0\to K^+K^-)<0.27\times 10^{-5}$, and ${\cal B}(B^+\to K^+\bar{K}{}^0)<0.50\times 10^{-5}$ at the 90% confidence level.

Measurement of B0d - B0d-bar mixing rate from the time evolution of dilepton events at the Upsilon(4S)

We report a determination of the B0d - B0d-bar mixing parameter Delta-m_d based on the time evolution of dilepton yields in Upsilon(4S) decays. The measurement is based on a 5.9 /fb data sample collected by the Belle detector at KEKB. The proper-time difference distributions for same-sign and opposite-sign dilepton events are simultaneously fitted to an expression containing Delta-m_d as a free parameter. Using both muons and electrons, we obtain Delta-m_d = 0.463 +- 0.008(stat.) +- 0.016(sys.) ps^{-1} This is the first determination of Delta-m_d from time evolution measurements at the Upsilon(4S). We also place limits on possible CPT violations.

Time-dependent angular analyses of B decays

When both B0 and B0bar can decay to the same final state composed of two vectors, the interference between them and those among three polarization states result in intricate phenomena. In this note we derive the time and angular distributions for general B to Va Vb processes in a form convenient for actual analyses. We then apply them to specific examples and clarify the CP violating parameters obtainable in the D* rho and J/ψK* final states. The time distributions for the D*pi final states are also discussed.

Time Dependent B0s - B0s-bar Mixing Using Inclusive and Semileptonic B Decays at SLD

We set a preliminary 95% C.L. exclusion on the oscillation frequency of B0s - B0s-bar mixing using a sample of 400,000 hadronic Z0 decays collected by the SLD experiment at the SLC between 1996 and 1998. The analyses determine the b-hadron flavor at production by exploiting the large forward-backward asymmetry of polarized Z0 -> b b-bar decays as well as information from the hemisphere opposite that of the reconstructed B decay. In one analysis, B decay vertices are reconstructed inclusively with a topological technique, and separation between B0s and B0s-bar decays exploits the B0s -> Ds- cascade charge structure. In the other analysis, semileptonic decays are selected and the B decay point is reconstructed by intersecting a lepton track with the trajectory of a topologically reconstructed D meson. The two analyses are combined with a third analysis described elsewhere to exclude the following values of the B0s - B0s-bar mixing oscillation frequency: Delta m_s < 7.6 ps-1 and 11.8 < Delta m_s < 14.8 ps-1 at the 95% confidence level.

An improved direct measurement of leptonic coupling asymmetries with polarized Z bosons

We present final measurements of the Z boson-lepton coupling asymmetry parameters Ae, Amu, and Atau with the complete sample of polarized Z bosons collected by the SLD detector at the SLAC Linear Collider. From the left-right production and decay polar angle asymmetries in leptonic Z decays we measure Ae = 0.1544 +- 0.0060, Amu = 0.142 +- 0.015, and Atau = 0.136 +- 0.015. Combined with our left-right asymmetry measured from hadronic decays, we find Ae = 0.1516 +- 0.0021. Assuming lepton universality, we obtain a combined effective weak mixing angle of sin**2 theta^{eff}_W = 0.23098 +- 0.00026.

Unusual behaviors in the transport properties of REFe$_{4}$P$_{12}$ (RE: La, Ce, Pr, and Nd)

We have investigated the resistivity ($ρ$), thermoelectric power (TEP) and Hall coefficient ($R_{H}$) on high quality single crystals of REFe$_{4}$P$_{12}$. TEP in CeFe$_{4}$P$_{12}$ is extremely large ($\sim$ 0.5mV/K at 290K) with a peak of $\sim$ 0.75mV/K at around 65K. The Hall mobility also shows a peak at $\sim$ 65K, suggesting carriers with heavy masses developed at lower temperatures related with the f-hybridized band. Both Pr- and Nd- systems exhibit an apparent increase of $ρ$ with decreasing temperature far above their magnetic transition temperatures. In the same temperature ranges, TEP exhibits unusually large absolute values of -50$μ$V/K for PrFe$_{4}$P$_{12}$ and -15$μ$V/K for NdFe$_{4}$P$_{12}$, respectively. For PrFe$_{4}$P$_{12}$, such anomalous transport properties suggest an unusual ground state, possibly related with the Quadrupolar Kondo effect.

Measurement of $A_c$ with Charmed Mesons at SLD

We present a direct measurement of the parity-violation parameter $A_c$ in the coupling of the $Z^0$ to $c$-quarks with the SLD detector. The measurement is based on a sample of 530k hadronic $Z^0$ decays, produced with a mean electron-beam polarization of $|P_e| = 73 %$. The tagging of $c$-quark events is performed using two methods: the exclusive reconstruction of $D^{\ast+}$, $D^+$, and $D^0$ mesons, and the soft-pions ($π_s$) produced in the decay of $D^{\ast+}\to D^0 π_s^+$. The large background from $D$ mesons produced in $B$ hadron decays is separated efficiently from the signal using precision vertex information. The combination of these two methods yields $A_c = 0.688 \pm 0.041.$

Measurements of Z0 Electroweak Couplings at SLD

We present a summary of the results of several electroweak measurements performed by the SLD experiment at the Stanford Linear Collider (SLC). Most of these results are preliminary and are based, unless otherwise indicated, on the full 1993-8 data set of approximately 550,000 hadronic decays of Z0 bosons produced with an average electron beam polarization of 73%.

Precise Measurement of Cosmic-Ray Proton and Helium Spectra with the BESS Spectrometer

We report cosmic-ray proton and helium spectra in energy ranges of 1 to 120 GeV and 1 to 54 GeV/nucleon, respectively, measured by a balloon flight of the BESS spectrometer in 1998. The magnetic-rigidity of the cosmic-rays was reliably determined by highly precise measurement of the circular track in a uniform solenoidal magnetic field of 1 Tesla. Those spectra were determined within overall uncertainties of +-5 % for protons and +- 10 % for helium nuclei including statistical and systematic errors.

A Preliminary Direct Measurement of the s-Quark Coupling

We present an updated direct measurement of the parity-violating coupling of the Z boson to strange quarks, A_s, derived from the full SLD data sample of approximately 550,000 hadronic decays of Z bosons produced with a polarized electron beam and recorded by the SLD experiment at SLAC between 1993 and 1998. Events with primary strange quarks are tagged by the presence in each event hemisphere of a high-momentum charged K meson, neutral K meson or Lambda hyperon identified using the Cherenkov Ring Imaging Detector and/or a mass tag. The CCD vertex detector is used to suppress the background from heavy flavor events. The strangeness of the tagged particle is used to sign the event thrust axis in the direction of the initial strange quark. The coupling A_s is obtained directly from a measurement of the left-right-forward-backward production asymmetry in polar angle of the tagged strange quark. The background from primary up and down events is measured from the data, as is the analyzing power of the method for primary strange events. We measure: A_s = 0.85 +- 0.06(stat.) +- 0.07(syst.) (preliminary).
