Equivalence-principle Analog of the Gravitational Redshift

What happens when two synchronized clocks on a rigid beam are both given the exact same acceleration profile? Will they remain synchronized? What if we use a rigid-rod Rindler acceleration profile? The special relativity prediction surprises many people. This experimental setup is the special-relativity analog of the gravitational redshift. Just like two clocks higher and lower in a gravitational field lose synchronization, one sees a loss of synchronization in these clocks with `identical' acceleration profiles. To the best of our knowledge this equivalence principle analog has never been directly measured, and current experimental techniques are sensitive enough to measure it. We discuss the origin of the essential physics behind this synchronization loss, and some special conditions which simplify its experimental observation. We discuss the origin of the essential physics behind this synchronization loss, and some special conditions which simplify its experimental observation. If validated this effect will not only test the equivalence principle from a new vantage, but it may one day aid in understanding and enhancing future ultra-precise navigation systems.

First measurement of muon-neutrino disappearance in NOvA

This paper reports the first measurement using the NOvA detectors of $\nu_\mu$ disappearance in a $\nu_\mu$ beam. The analysis uses a 14 kton-equivalent exposure of $2.74 \times 10^{20}$ protons-on-target from the Fermilab NuMI beam. Assuming the normal neutrino mass hierarchy, we measure $\Delta m^{2}_{32}=(2.52^{+0.20}_{-0.18})\times 10^{-3}$ eV$^{2}$ and $\sin^2\theta_{23}$ in the range 0.38-0.65, both at the 68% confidence level, with two statistically-degenerate best fit points at $\sin^2\theta_{23} = $ 0.43 and 0.60. Results for the inverted mass hierarchy are also presented.

First measurement of electron neutrino appearance in NOvA

We report results from the first search for $\nu_\mu\to\nu_e$ transitions by the NOvA experiment. In an exposure equivalent to $2.74\times10^{20}$ protons-on-target in the upgraded NuMI beam at Fermilab, we observe 6 events in the Far Detector, compared to a background expectation of $0.99\pm0.11$ (syst.) events based on the Near Detector measurement. A secondary analysis observes 11 events with a background of $1.07\pm0.14$ (syst.). The $3.3\sigma$ excess of events observed in the primary analysis disfavors $0.1\pi < \delta_{CP} < 0.5\pi$ in the inverted mass hierarchy at the 90% C.L.

Study of tau Decays to Four-Hadron Final States with Kaons

The tau decays to four hadrons have been studied with the CLEO III detector at the Cornell Electron Storage Ring (CESR) using (7.56 +- 0.15) fb^{-1} of data collected near the Y(4S) resonance. We present the first statistically significant measurements of B(tau- -> K- pi+pi- pi0 nu, excluding K^0) = (7.4 +- 0.8 +- 1.1) x 10^{-4} and B(tau--> K- K+ pi- pi0 nu) = (5.5 +- 1.4 +- 1.2) x 10^{-5}, including the first observation of the decay, tau- -> K- omega nu, with branching fraction (4.1 +- 0.6 +- 0.7) x 10^{-4}. We also publish the first upper limit for B(tau- -> K- K+ K- pi0 nu) < 4.8 (6.1) x 10^{-6} at 90% (95%) confidence level (C.L.).

Cabibbo-Suppressed Decays of D^+ \to π^+π^0, K^+\bar{K}^0, K^+π^0

Using a 13.7 fb-1 data sample collected with the CLEO II and II.V detectors, we report new branching fraction measurements for two Cabibbo-suppressed decay modes of the D+ meson: BR(D+ -> pi+ pi0) = (1.31 +/- 0.17 +/- 0.09 +/- 0.09) x 10^(-3)and BR(D+ -> K+ K0bar) = (5.24 +/- 0.43 +/- 0.20 +/- 0.34) x 10^(-3) which are significant improvements over past measurements. The errors reflect statistical and systematical uncertainties as well as the uncertainty in the absolute D+ branching fraction scale. We also set the first 90% confidence level upper limit on the branching fraction of the doubly Cabibbo-suppressed decay mode BR(D+ -> K+ pi0) < 4.2 x 10^(-4).

Cabibbo-Suppressed Decays of D^+ to pi^+ pi^0, K^+ K^0, and K^+ pi^0

Using a data sample corresponding to 13.7 fb^-1 collected with the CLEO II and II.V detectors, we report new branching fraction measurements for two Cabibbo-suppressed decay modes of the D^+ meson: Br(D^+ to pi^+ pi^0) = (1.3 +/- 0.2) x 10^-3 and Br(D^+ to \bar{K}^0 K^+) = (5.2 +/- 0.6) x 10^-3 which are significant improvements over past measurements. The errors include statistical and systematical uncertainties as well as the uncertainty in the absolute D^+ branching fraction scale. We also set the first 90% confidence level upper limit on the branching fraction of the doubly Cabibbo-suppressed decay mode Br(D^+ to K^+ pi^0) < 4.2 x 10^-4.
