Localization of gravity in brane world with arbitrary extra dimensions

We study the induced 4-dimensional linearized Einstein field equations in an m-dimensional bulk space by means of a confining potential. It is shown that in this approach the mass of graviton is quantized. The cosmological constant problem is also addressed within the context of this approach. We show that the difference between the values of the cosmological constant in particle physics and cosmology stems from our measurements in two different scales, small and large.

$f(T)$ cosmology via Noether symmetry

We consider Noether symmetry approach to find out exact cosmological solutions in $f(T)$-gravity. Instead of taking into account phenomenological models, we apply the Noether symmetry to the $f(T)$ gravity. As a result, the presence of such symmetries selects viable models and allow to solve the equations of motion. We show that the generated $f(T)$ leads to a power law expansion for the cosmological scale factor.

DGP brane cosmology and quark-hadron phase transition

In the standard picture of cosmology it is predicted that a phase transition, associated with chiral symmetry breaking after the electroweak transition, has occurred at approximately 10 μseconds after the Big Bang to convert a plasma of free quarks and gluons into hadrons. We consider the quark-hadron phase transition in a DGP brane world scenario within an effective model of QCD. We study the evolution of the physical quantities useful for the study of the early universe, namely, the energy density, temperature and the scale factor before, during, and after the phase transition. Also, due to the high energy density in the early universe, we consider the quadratic energy density term that appears in the Friedmann equation. In DGP brane models such a term corresponds to the negative branch (ε=-1) of the Friedmann equation when the Hubble radius is much smaller than the crossover length in 4D and 5D regimes. We show that for different values of the cosmological constant on a brane, λ, phase transition occurs and results in decreasing the effective temperature of the quark-gluon plasma and of the hadronic fluid. We then consider the quark-hadron transition in the smooth crossover regime at high and low temperatures and show that such a transition occurs along with decreasing the effective temperature of the quark-gluon plasma during the process of the phase transition.

Naked Singularity Formation In f(R) Gravity

We study the gravitational collapse of a star with barotropic equation of state $p=wρ$ in the context of $f({\mathcal R})$ theories of gravity. Utilizing the metric formalism, we rewrite the field equations as those of Brans-Dicke theory with vanishing coupling parameter. By choosing the functionality of Ricci scalar as $f({\mathcal R})=α{\mathcal R}^{m}$, we show that for an appropriate initial value of the energy density, if $α$ and $m$ satisfy certain conditions, the resulting singularity would be naked, violating the cosmic censorship conjecture. These conditions are the ratio of the mass function to the area radius of the collapsing ball, negativity of the effective pressure, and the time behavior of the Kretschmann scalar. Also, as long as parameter $α$ obeys certain conditions, the satisfaction of the weak energy condition is guaranteed by the collapsing configuration.

Quark-hadron phase transition in Brans-Dicke brane gravity

A standard picture in cosmology has been emerging over the past decade in which a phase transition, associated with chiral symmetry breaking after the electroweak transition, has occurred at approximately $10^{-6}$ seconds after the Big Bang to convert a plasma of free quarks and gluons into hadrons. In this paper, we consider the quark-hadron phase transition in a Brans-Dicke brane world scenario within an effective model of QCD. We study the evolution of the physical quantities relevant to quantitative description of the early universe, namely, the energy density, temperature and the scale factor before, during, and after the phase transition. We show that for different values of the Brans-Dicke coupling, $ω$, phase transition occurs and results in decreasing the effective temperature of the quark-gluon plasma and of the hadronic fluid. We then move on to consider the quark-hadron transition in the smooth crossover regime at high and low temperatures and show that such a transition occurs and results in decreasing the effective temperature of the quark-gluon plasma during the process of quark-hadron phase transition.

Naked Singularity Formation In Brans-Dicke Theory

Gravitational collapse of the Brans-Dicke scalar field with non-zero potential in the presence of matter fluid obeying the barotropic equation of state, $p=wρ$ is studied. Utilizing the concept of expansion parameter, it is seen that the cosmic censorship conjecture may be violated for $w=-\frac{1}{3}$ and $ w=-\frac{2}{3}$ which correspond to cosmic string and domain wall, respectively. We show that physically, it is the rate of collapse and the presence of Brans-Dicke scalar field that govern the formation of a black hole or a naked singularity as the final fate of dynamical evolution and only for these two cases the singularity can be naked as the collapse end state. Also the weak energy condition is satisfied by the collapsing configuration.

Generalized virial theorem in Palatini $f(R)$ gravity

We use the collision-free Boltzmann equation in Palatini $f({\mathcal{R}})$ gravity to derive the virial theorem within the context of the Palatini approach. It is shown that the virial mass is proportional to certain geometrical terms appearing in the Einstein field equations which contribute to gravitational energy and that such geometric mass can be attributed to the virial mass discrepancy in cluster of galaxies. We then derive the velocity dispersion relation for clusters followed by the metric tensor components inside the cluster as well as the $f({\mathcal{R}})$ lagrangian in terms of the observational parameters. Since these quantities may also be obtained experimentally, the $f({\mathcal{R}})$ virial theorem is a convenient tool to test the viability of $f({\mathcal{R}})$ theories in different models. Finally, we discuss the limitations of our approach in the light of the cosmological averaging used and questions that have been raised in the literature against such averaging procedures in the context of the present work.

Correspondence between modified gravity and 5D Ricci-flat cosmologies

We study the correspondence between two theoretical frameworks for describing dark energy, $f(R)$ gravity and higher-dimensional Space-Time-Matter (STM) or induced-matter theory. We show that the Hubble expansion parameter in $f(R)$ gravity can be associated with a combination of metric functions in STM theory, and consider a specific example whose properties are consistent with late-time acceleration.

Energy conditions in f(R) gravity and Brans-Dicke theories

The equivalence between f(R) gravity and scalar-tensor theories is invoked to study the null, strong, weak and dominant energy conditions in Brans-Dicke theory. We consider the validity of the energy conditions in Brans-Dicke theory by invoking the energy conditions derived from a generic f(R) theory. The parameters involved are shown to be consistent with an accelerated expanding universe.

Brans-Dicke DGP Brane Cosmology

We consider a five dimensional DGP-brane scenario endowed with a non-minimally coupled scalar field within the context of Brans-Dicke theory. This theory predicts that the mass appearing in the gravitational potential is modified by the addition of the mass of the effective intrinsic curvature on the brane. We also derive the effective four dimensional field equations on a 3+1 dimensional brane where the fifth dimension is assumed to have an orbifold symmetry. Finally, we discuss the cosmological implications of this setup, predicting an accelerated expanding universe with a value of the Brans-Dicke parameter $ω$ consistent with values resulting from the solar system observations.

Accelerating universe in $f({\cal R})$ brane gravity

We study a 5-dimensional $f({\cal R})$ brane gravity within the framework of scalar-tensor type theories. We show that such a model predicts, for a certain choice of $f({\cal R})$ and a spatially flat universe, an exponential potential, leading to an accelerated expanding universe driven solely by the curvature of the bulk space. This result is consistent with the observational data in the cosmological scale.

Curvature corrections in DGP brane cosmology

We consider a DGP inspired brane scenario where the action on the brane is augmented by a function of the Ricci scalar, ${\cal L}(R)$. The cosmological implications that such a scenario entails are examined for $R^{n}$ and shown to be consistent with a universe expanding with power-law acceleration. It is shown that two classes of solutions exist for the usual FRW metric and small Hubble radii. When the Hubble radius becomes larger, we either have a transition to a fully 5D regime or to a self-inflationary solution which produces a late accelerated expansion such that the radius becomes a function of $n$.

Modified gravity inspired DGP brane cosmology

We consider a DGP brane scenario where a scalar field is present on the brane through the introduction of a scalar potential, itself motivated by the notion of modified gravity. This theory predicts that the mass appearing in the gravitational potential is modified by the addition of the mass of the scalar field. The cosmological implications that such a scenario entails are examined and shown to be consistent with a universe expanding with power-law acceleration.

Accelerated expansion in modified gravity with a Yukawa-like term

We discuss the Palatini formulation of modified gravity including a Yukawa-like term. It is shown that in this formulation, the Yukawa term offers an explanation for the current exponential accelerated expansion of the universe and reduces to the standard Friedmann cosmology in the appropriate limit. We then discuss the scalar-tensor formulation of the model as a metric theory and show that the Yukawa term predicts a power-law acceleration at late-times. The Newtonian limit of the theory is also discussed in context of the Palatini formalism.
