First Look Murchison Widefield Array observations of Abell 3667

The Murchison Widefield Array (MWA) is a new low frequency interferometric radio telescope, operating in the remote Murchison Radio Observatory in Western Australia. In this paper we present the first MWA observations of the well known radio relics in Abell 3667 (A3667) between 120 and 226 MHz. We clearly detect the radio relics in A3667 and present flux estimates and spectral indices for these features. The average spectral index of the north-west (NW) and south-east (SE) relics is -0.9 +/- 0.1 between 120 and 1400 MHz. We are able to resolve spatial variation in the spectral index of the NW relic from -1.7 to -0.4, which is consistent with results found at higher frequencies.

The first Murchison Widefield Array low frequency radio observations of cluster scale non-thermal emission: the case of Abell 3667

We present the first Murchison Widefield Array observations of the well-known cluster of galaxies Abell 3667 (A3667) between 105 and 241 MHz. A3667 is one of the best known examples of a galaxy cluster hosting a double radio relic and has been reported to contain a faint radio halo and bridge. The origins of radio halos, relics and bridges is still unclear, however galaxy cluster mergers seems to be an important factor. We clearly detect the North-West (NW) and South-East (SE) radio relics in A3667 and find an integrated flux density at 149 MHz of 28.1 +/- 1.7 and 2.4 +/- 0.1 Jy, respectively, with an average spectral index, between 120 and 1400 MHz, of -0.9 +/- 0.1 for both relics. We find evidence of a spatial variation in the spectral index across the NW relic steepening towards the centre of the cluster, which indicates an ageing electron population. These properties are consistent with higher frequency observations. We detect emission that could be associated with a radio halo and bridge. How- ever, due to the presence of poorly sampled large-scale Galactic emission and blended point sources we are unable to verify the exact nature of these features.

All-optical memory based on the injection locking bistability of a two-color laser diode

We study the injection locking bistability of a specially engineered two-color semiconductor Fabry-Perot laser. Oscillation in the uninjected primary mode leads to a bistability of single mode and two-color equilibria. With pulsed modulation of the injected power we demonstrate an all-optical memory element based on this bistability, where the uninjected primary mode is switched with 35 dB intensity contrast. Using experimental and theoretical analysis, we describe the associated bifurcation structure, which is not found in single mode systems with optical injection.

Antiphase dynamics in a multimode semiconductor laser with optical injection

A detailed experimental study of antiphase dynamics in a two-mode semiconductor laser with optical injection is presented. The device is a specially designed Fabry-Perot laser that supports two primary modes with a THz frequency spacing. Injection in one of the primary modes of the device leads to a rich variety of single and two-mode dynamical scenarios, which are reproduced with remarkable accuracy by a four dimensional rate equation model. Numerical bifurcation analysis reveals the importance of torus bifurcations in mediating transitions to antiphase dynamics and of saddle-node of limit cycle bifurcations in switching of the dynamics between single and two-mode regimes.

Two-Color Fabry-Perot Laser Diode with THz Primary Mode Spacing

A class of multiwavelength Fabry-Perot lasers is introduced where the spectrum is tailored through a non-periodic patterning of the cavity effective index. The cavity geometry is obtained using an inverse scattering approach and can be designed such that the spacing of discrete Fabry-Perot lasing modes is limited only by the bandwidth of the inverted gain medium. A specific two-color semiconductor laser with a mode spacing in the THz regime is designed, and measurements are presented demonstrating the simultaneous oscillation of the two wavelengths. The extension of the Fabry-Perot laser concept described presents significant new possibilities in laser cavity design.

Induced theta-vacuum states in heavy ion collisions: a possible signature

It has been suggested recently that an arbitrary induced theta-vacuum state could be created in heavy ion collisions. If such a state can be created, it would decay by various mechanisms to the fundamental theta=0 state which is the true ground state of our world. In the following we will discuss the possibility of studying this unusual state through the emission of pions, eta-mesons, and eta'-mesons. We will also present the spectrum of the produced particles in this non-zero theta background. We use the instantaneous perturbation theory for our estimates.

Can Induced Theta Vacua be Created in Heavy Ion Collisions?

The development of the early Universe is a remarkable laboratory for the study of most nontrivial properties of particle physics. What is more remarkable is the fact that these phenomena at the QCD scale can be, in principle, experimentally tested in heavy ion collisions. We expect that, in general, an arbitrary theta-state would be created in the heavy ion collisions, similar to the creation of the disoriented chiral condensate with an arbitrary isospin direction. It should be a large domain with a wrong $θ\neq 0$ orientation. We test this idea numerically in a simple model where we study the evolution of the phases of the chiral condensates in QCD with two quark flavors with non-zero theta-parameter. We see the formation of a non-zero theta-vacuum with the formation time of the order of $10^{-23}$ seconds. This result will have important implications for a possible axion search experiment at RHIC.

A new order $α$ correction to the decay rate of pionium

Recently, much work has been devoted to the calculation of order $α$ corrections to the decay rate of pionium, the $π^+ π^-$ bound state. In previous calculations, nonrelativistic QED corrections were neglected since they start at order $α^2$ in hydrogen and positronium. In this note, we point out that there is one correction which is actually of order $α$ times a function of the ratio $μ_r α/ m_e$, where $μ_r$ is the reduced mass of the system. When $μ_r α\ll m_e$, this function can be Taylor expanded and leads to higher order corrections. When $μ_r α\approx m_e$, as is the case in pionium, the function is of order one and the correction is of order $α$. We use an effective field theory approach to calculate this correction and find it equal to $0.4298 αΓ_0$. We also calculate the corresponding correction to the dimuonium ($μ^+ μ^-$ bound state) decay rate and obtained a result in agreement with Jentschura et al.
