Luttinger liquid phenomenology and angle resolved photoemission for single layer $\chem{Bi_2Sr_{2-x}La_xCuO_{6+δ}}$ high--temperature superconductor

Recently observed splitting in angular resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) on $\chem{Bi_2Sr_{2-x}La_xCuO_{6+δ}}$ high--temperature superconductor (Janowitz C. {\it et al.}, {\it Europhys. Lett.}, {\bf 60} (2002) 615) is interpreted within the phenomenological Luttinger--liquid framework, in which both the non--Fermi liquid scaling exponent of the spectral function and the spin--charge separation are introduced. The anomalous Green function with adjustable parameters fits very well to the Fermi edge and the low--energy part of ARPES along the $Γ-M$ line in the Brillouin zone. In contrast to one--dimensional models with Luttinger--liquid behavior we find that both the anomalous scaling $α$ and the parameter $δ$ describing the spin--charge separation are momentum dependent. The higher--energy part of the spectra is not accounted for by this simple Luttinger--liquid form of the Green function. In this energy regime additional scattering processes are plausible to produce the experimentally observed wide incoherent background, which diminishes as the inverse of the energy.

Quantum ballistic transport in constrictions of n-PbTe

Conductance of submicron constrictions of PbTe:Bi was studied up to 8T and between 4.2K and 50mK. The structures were fabricated by electron beam lithography and chemical etching of high--electron mobility films grown by MBE on BaF_2. In the moderately strong magnetic fields perpendicular to the current, B>1T, the conductance shows accurate quantization in the units of 1e^2/h as a function of the side-gate voltage. In the absence of the field, a temperature-independent step structure, with an average step height approx. 1e^2/h, is observed. It is suggested that such a quantization may reflect the lifting of the Kramers degeneracy by the exchange interaction among the electrons, effective despite a large dielectric constant of bulk PbTe.

Realistic Electron-Electron Interaction in a Quantum Wire

The form of an effective electron-electron interaction in a quantum wire with a large static dielectric constant is determined and the resulting properties of the electron liquid in such a one-dimensional system are described. The exchange and correlation energies are evaluated and a possibility of a paramagnetic-ferromagnetic phase transition in the ground state of such a system is discussed. Low-energy excitations are briefly described.
