Measurement of the decay $B^0\toπ^-\ell^+ν$ and determination of $|V_{ub}|$

We present a measurement of the charmless semileptonic decay $B^0\toπ^-\ell^+ν$ using a data sample containing 657$\times 10^6$ $B\bar{B}$ events collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy $e^+e^-$ collider operating near the $Υ(4S)$ resonance. We determine the total branching fraction of the decay, $\mathcal{B}(B^0\toπ^-\ell^+ν)=(1.49\pm 0.04{(\mathrm{stat})}\pm 0.07{(\mathrm{syst})})\times 10^{-4}$. We also report a new precise measurement of the differential decay rate, and extract the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix element $|V_{ub}|$ using model-independent and -dependent approaches. From a simultaneous fit to the measured differential decay rate and lattice QCD results, we obtain $|V_{ub}|=(3.43\pm 0.33)\times 10^{-3}$, where the error includes both statistical and systematic uncertainties.

Anisotropic upper critical field and a possible Fulde-Ferrel-Larkin-Ovchinnikov state in a stoichiometric pnictide superconductor LiFeAs

Measurements of the temperature and angular dependencies of the upper critical fields $H_{c2}$ of a stoichiometric single crystal LiFeAs in pulsed magnetic fields up to 50 T were performed using a tunnel diode resonator. Full $H^{\parallel c}_{c2}(T)$ and $H^{\bot c}_{c2}(T)$ curves with $H^{\parallel c}_{c2}(0)=17 \pm 1$ T, $H^{\bot c}_{c2}(0)=26 \pm 1$ T, and the anisotropy parameter ${γ_H}(T) \equiv H_{c2}^{\bot c}/H_{c2}^{\parallel c}$ decreasing from $\approx 2.5$ at $T_c$ to 1.5 at $T\ll T_c$ were observed. The results for both orientations are in excellent agreement with a theory of $H_{c2}$ for two-band $s^\pm$ pairing in the clean limit. We show that $H^{\parallel c}_{c2}(T)$ is mostly limited by the orbital pairbreaking, whereas the shape of $H^{\bot c}_{c2}(T)$ indicates strong paramagnetic Pauli limiting and the inhomogeneous Fulde-Ferrel-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO)state below $T_F \sim 5$ K.

Belle II Technical Design Report

The Belle detector at the KEKB electron-positron collider has collected almost 1 billion Y(4S) events in its decade of operation. Super-KEKB, an upgrade of KEKB is under construction, to increase the luminosity by two orders of magnitude during a three-year shutdown, with an ultimate goal of 8E35 /cm^2 /s luminosity. To exploit the increased luminosity, an upgrade of the Belle detector has been proposed. A new international collaboration Belle-II, is being formed. The Technical Design Report presents physics motivation, basic methods of the accelerator upgrade, as well as key improvements of the detector.

Studying the Underlying Event in Drell-Yan and High Transverse Momentum Jet Production at the Tevatron

We study the underlying event in proton-antiproton collisions by examining the behavior of charged particles (transverse momentum pT > 0.5 GeV/c, pseudorapidity |η| < 1) produced in association with large transverse momentum jets (~2.2 fb-1) or with Drell-Yan lepton-pairs (~2.7 fb-1) in the Z-boson mass region (70 < M(pair) < 110 GeV/c2) as measured by CDF at 1.96 TeV center-of-mass energy. We use the direction of the lepton-pair (in Drell-Yan production) or the leading jet (in high-pT jet production) in each event to define three regions of η-ϕspace; toward, away, and transverse, where ϕis the azimuthal scattering angle. For Drell-Yan production (excluding the leptons) both the toward and transverse regions are very sensitive to the underlying event. In high-pT jet production the transverse region is very sensitive to the underlying event and is separated into a MAX and MIN transverse region, which helps separate the hard component (initial and final-state radiation) from the beam-beam remnant and multiple parton interaction components of the scattering. The data are corrected to the particle level to remove detector effects and are then compared with several QCD Monte-Carlo models. The goal of this analysis is to provide data that can be used to test and improve the QCD Monte-Carlo models of the underlying event that are used to simulate hadron-hadron collisions.

Upper critical field study in the organic superconductor $β''$-(ET)$_{2}$SF$_{5}$CH$_{2}$CF$_{2}$SO$_{3}$ : Possibility of Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov state

We report upper critical field measurements in the metal-free-all-organic superconductor $β''$-(ET)$_{2}$SF$_{5}$CH$_{2}$CF$_{2}$SO$_{3}$ obtained from measuring the in-plane penetration depth using the tunnel diode oscillator technique. For magnetic field applied parallel to the conducting planes the low temperature upper critical fields are found to exceed the Pauli limiting field calculated by using a semi-empirical method. Furthermore, we found a signature that could be the phase transition between the superconducting vortex state and the Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov state in the form of a kink just below the upper critical field and only at temperatures below 1.23 K.

Differential Structure of Abelian Functions

The space of abelian functions of a principally polarized abelian variety J is studied as a module over the ring D of global holomorphic differential operators on J. We construct a D-free resolution in case the theta divisor is non-singular. As an application, in the case of dimension 2 and 3, we construct a new linear basis of the space of abelian functions in terms of logarithmic derivatives of the higher dimensional sigma function.

Search for First-Generation Scalar Leptoquarks in $\bm{p \bar{p}}$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}$=1.96 TeV

We report on a search for pair production of first-generation scalar leptoquarks ($LQ$) in $p \bar{p}$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}$=1.96 TeV using an integrated luminosity of 203 $pb^{-1}$ collected at the Fermilab Tevatron collider by the CDF experiment. We observe no evidence for $LQ$ production in the topologies arising from $LQ \bar{LQ} \to eqeq$ and $LQ \bar{LQ} \to eq νq$, and derive 95% C.L. upper limits on the $LQ$ production cross section. %as a function of $β$, where $β$ is the branching fraction for $LQ \to eq$. The results are combined with those obtained from a separately reported CDF search in the topology arising from $LQ\bar{LQ} \to νq νq$ and 95% C.L. lower limits on the LQ mass as a function of $β= BR(LQ \to eq) $ are derived. The limits are 236, 205 and 145 GeV/c$^2$ for $β$ = 1, $β$ = 0.5 and $β$ = 0.1, respectively.

Bragg diffraction of microcavity polaritons by a surface acoustic wave

Bragg scattering of polaritons by a coherent acoustic wave is mediated and strongly enhanced by the relevant exciton states resonant with the acoustic and optic fields simultaneously. In this case, in sharp contrast with conventional acousto-optics, the resonantly enhanced Bragg spectra reveal the multiple orders of diffracted light, i.e., a Brillouin band structure of parametrically driven polaritons can be directly visualized. We analyze the above scheme for polaritons in (GaAs) semiconductor microcavities driven by a surface acoustic wave (SAW) and show that for realistic values of the SAW, $ν_{\rm SAW} = 1$ GHz and $I_{\rm ac} \lesssim 100$ W/cm$^2$, the main acoustically-induced band gap in the polariton spectrum can be as large as $Δ^{\rm MC}_{\rm ac} \simeq 0.6$ meV, and the Bragg replicas up to $n=3$ can be observed.

Novel approach to nonlinear susceptibility

The calculation of the third order susceptibility still is a long standing fundamental problem of particular importance in nonlinear nanooptics: Indeed, cancellation of size-dependent terms coming from uncorrelated excitations is expected, but up to now shown for very simple Hamiltonians only. Using a many-body theory recently developed to handle interacting close-to-bosons, we prove it here for \emph{arbitrary} H. This new formalism actually provides the first clean way to calculate nonlinear susceptibilities, with results different from previous ones.
