Three-dimensional imaging of hadrons with hard exclusive reactions: advances in experiment, theory, phenomenology, and lattice QCD

Generalized Parton Distributions (GPDs) have emerged as a powerful framework for exploring the internal structure of hadrons in terms of their partonic constituents. Over the past three decades, the field has witnessed significant theoretical and experimental advancements. The interpretation of GPDs in impact parameter space offers a vivid three-dimensional visualization of hadron structure, correlating longitudinal momentum and transverse spatial distributions, thereby enabling tomographic imaging of hadrons. Furthermore, the link between GPDs and the matrix elements of the QCD energy-momentum tensor provides access to fundamental properties of hadrons, including spin decomposition and internal pressure distributions. Notably, recent analyses of Deeply Virtual Compton Scattering (DVCS) data have enabled the empirical extraction of the quark pressure profile inside the proton. Motivated by the rapidly evolving experimental landscape, this white paper provides a timely and focused overview of recent developments in GPD theory, phenomenology, and lattice QCD studies. Its scope is shaped by the needs and opportunities of forthcoming experimental programs, and it highlights advances that are particularly relevant for the next generation of dedicated measurements, including the extended Jefferson Lab 12 GeV program and its potential 22 GeV upgrade, J-PARC, COMPASS/AMBER, LHC ultra-peripheral collisions, and the future electron-ion colliders EIC and EicC.

Open database for GPD analyses

This article summarizes the main ideas behind creating an open database proposed for use in the exploration of generalized parton distributions (GPDs). This lightweight database is well suited for GPD phenomenology and is designed to store both experimental and lattice-QCD data. It can also aid in benchmarking GPD-related developments, such as GPD models. The database utilizes a new data format based on the YAML serialization language, enabling the storage of essential information for modern analyses, such as replica values. It includes interfaces for both Python and C++, allowing straightforward integration with analysis codes.

Thermal evolution of the one-flavour Schwinger model using Matrix Product States

The Schwinger model, or 1+1 dimensional QED, offers an interesting object of study, both at zero and non-zero temperature, because of its similarities to QCD. In this proceeding, we present the a full calculation of the temperature dependent chiral condensate of this model in the continuum limit using Matrix Product States (MPS). MPS methods, in general tensor networks, constitute a very promising technique for the non-perturbative study of Hamiltonian quantum systems. In the last few years, they have shown their suitability as ansatzes for ground states and low-lying excita- tions of lattice gauge theories. We show the feasibility of the approach also for finite temperature, both in the massless and in the massive case.

Thermal evolution of the Schwinger model with Matrix Product Operators

We demonstrate the suitability of tensor network techniques for describing the thermal evolution of lattice gauge theories. As a benchmark case, we have studied the temperature dependence of the chiral condensate in the Schwinger model, using matrix product operators to approximate the thermal equilibrium states for finite system sizes with non-zero lattice spacings. We show how these techniques allow for reliable extrapolations in bond dimension, step width, system size and lattice spacing, and for a systematic estimation and control of all error sources involved in the calculation. The reached values of the lattice spacing are small enough to capture the most challenging region of high temperatures and the final results are consistent with the analytical prediction by Sachs and Wipf over a broad temperature range.

The mass spectrum of the Schwinger model with Matrix Product States

We show the feasibility of tensor network solutions for lattice gauge theories in Hamiltonian formulation by applying matrix product states algorithms to the Schwinger model with zero and non-vanishing fermion mass. We introduce new techniques to compute excitations in a system with open boundary conditions, and to identify the states corresponding to low momentum and different quantum numbers in the continuum. For the ground state and both the vector and scalar mass gaps in the massive case, the MPS technique attains precisions comparable to the best results available from other techniques.

Topological susceptibility and chiral condensate with $N_f=2+1+1$ dynamical flavors of maximally twisted mass fermions

We study the 'spectral projector' method for the computation of the chiral condensate and the topological susceptibility, using $N_f=2+1+1$ dynamical flavors of maximally twisted mass Wilson fermions. In particular, we perform a study of the quark mass dependence of the chiral condensate $Σ$ and topological susceptibility $χ_{top}$ in the range $270 MeV < m_π < 500 MeV$ and compare our data with analytical predictions. In addition, we compute $χ_{top}$ in the quenched approximation where we match the lattice spacing to the $N_f=2+1+1$ dynamical simulations. Using the Kaon, $η$ and $η^{\prime}$ meson masses computed on the $N_f=2+1+1$ ensembles, we then perform a preliminary test of the Witten-Veneziano relation.

Twisted Mass, Overlap and Creutz Fermions: Cut-off Effects at Tree-level of Perturbation Theory

We study cutoff effects at tree-level of perturbation theory for maximally twisted mass Wilson, overlap and the recently proposed Creutz fermions. We demonstrate that all three kind of lattice fermions exhibit the expected O(a^2) scaling behaviour in the lattice spacing. In addition, the sizes of these cutoff effects are comparable for the three kinds of lattice fermions considered here. Furthermore, we analyze situations when twisted mass fermions are not exactly at maximal twist and when overlap fermions are studied in comparison to twisted mass fermions when the quark masses are not matched.

Cutoff effects for Wilson twisted mass fermions at tree-level of perturbation theory

We study cutoff effects at tree-level of perturbation theory for standard Wilson and Wilson twisted mass fermionic lattice actions with Nf=2 flavour degenerate quarks. The discretization effects are investigated by computing the mass spectrum and decay amplitudes for different hadron interpolating fields and the scaling behaviour towards the continuum limit is analyzed. It is shown that the Wilson and the mass average methods are equivalent and lead to O(a) improved R5-parity even lattice observables. We also demonstrate that automatic O(a) improvement works in case of Wilson twisted mass fermions at maximal twist and that this improvement is realized even if the condition of maximal twist is achieved only up to O(a) cutoff effects. We demonstrate that in the chiral limit standard Wilson fermions show scaling violations of O(a^2) while for maximally twisted mass fermions these violations are only of O(a^4). For our analytical calculations, lattices with sizes L=aN and periodic boundary conditions in the spatial directions have been chosen while infinite extension in the time direction is considered.
