Fast reconstruction of programmable integrated interferometers

Programmable linear optical interferometers are important for classical and quantum information technologies, as well as for building hardware-accelerated artificial neural networks. Recent results showed the possibility of constructing optical interferometers that could implement arbitrary transformations of input fields even in the case of high manufacturing errors. The building of detailed models of such devices drastically increases the efficiency of their practical use. The integral design of interferometers complicates its reconstruction since the internal elements are hard to address. This problem can be approached by using optimization algorithms [Opt. Express 29, 38429 (2021)]. In this paper, we present a novel efficient algorithm based on linear algebra only, which does not use computationally expensive optimization procedures. We show that this approach makes it possible to perform fast and accurate characterization of high-dimensional programmable integrated interferometers. Moreover, the method provides access to the physical characteristics of individual interferometer layers.

Statistical parameter estimation of multimode multiphoton subtracted thermal states of light

Thermal states of light are widely used in quantum optics for various quantum phenomena testing. Particularly, they can be utilized for characterization of photon creation and photon annihilation operations. During the last decade the problem of photon subtraction from multimode quantum states become of much significance. Therefore, in this work we present a technique for statistical parameter estimation of multimode multiphoton subtracted thermal states of light, which can be used for multimode photon annihilation test.

Multimode thermal states with multiphoton subtraction: study of the photons number distribution in the selected subsystem

Thermal states of light are widely used in quantum optics due to their correlation properties. As is well known, their correlation properties and the photon number distribution as a whole are strongly dependent on the mode number selected by the detection scheme. The same changes can be caused by photon subtraction. Therefore, we describe the general case of the multimode thermal state after a multiphoton subtraction, when the photon number statistics is registered by the detector selecting a part of the initial modes. We present an analytical form of the obtained photon number distribution and its general properties and check them in the experiment.

Theoretical and experimental study of multi-mode thermal states with subtraction of a random number of photons

The work is devoted to the theoretical and experimental study of quantum states of light conditionally prepared by subtraction of a random number of photons from the initial multimode thermal state. A fixed number of photons is subtracted from a multimode quantum state, but only a subsystem of a lower number of modes is registered, in which the number of subtracted photons turns out to be a non-fixed random variable. It is shown that the investigation of multiphoton subtracted multimode thermal states provides a direct study of the fundamental quantum-statistical properties of bosons using a simple experimental implementation. The developed experimental setup plays a role of a specific boson lototron, which is based on the fundamental link between the statistics of boson systems and the Polya distribution. It is shown that the calculation of the photon number distribution based on the Polya urn scheme is equivalent to a calculation using statistical weights for boson systems. A mathematical model based on the composition of the Polya distribution and thermal state is developed and verified. The experimental results are in a good agreement with the developed theory.

Separated Schmidt modes in the angular spectrum of biphotons

We prepare qudits based on angular multimode biphoton states by modulating the pump angular spectrum. The modes are prepared in the Schmidt basis and their intensity distributions do not overlap in space. This allows one to get rid of filtering losses while addressing single modes and to realize a single-shot qudit readout.

The direct test of the absence of the "quantum vampire's" shadow with use of thermal light

Counterintuitive nature of quantum physics leads to a number of paradoxes. One of them is a "quantum vampire" effect [1] consisting in the fact, that photon annihilation in a part of a large beam doesn't change the shape of the beam profile (i. e., doesn't cast a shadow), but may change the total beam intensity. Previously this effect was demonstrated just in a simplified double-mode regime [1,2]. In the current paper the direct test of shadow absence after the photon annihilation has been performed with use of thermal state of light at the input.

Non-Gaussianity of multiple photon subtracted thermal states in terms of compound-Poisson photon number distribution parameters: theory and experiment

The multiphoton-subtracted thermal states are an interesting example of quantum states of light which are both classical and non-Gaussian. All the properties of such states can be described by just two parameters of compound-Poisson photon number distribution. The non-Gaussianity dependency on these parameters has been calculated numerically and analytically. The loss of non-Gaussianity during the optical damping has been also studied experimentally.

Multi-photon subtracted thermal states: description, preparation and reconstruction

We present a study of optical quantum states generated by subtraction of photons from the thermal state. Some aspects of their photon number and quadrature distributions are discussed and checked experimentally. We demonstrate an original method of up to ten photon subtracted state preparation with use of just one single-photon detector. All the states where measured with use of balanced homodyne technique, and the corresponding density matrices where reconstructed. The fidelity between desired and reconstructed states exceeds 99%

Luminescence in germania-silica fibers in 1-2 μm region

We analyze the origins of the luminescence in germania-silica fibers with high germanium concentration (about 30 mol. % GeO2) in the region 1-2 μm with a laser pump at the wavelength 532 nm. We show that such fibers demonstrate the high level of luminescence which unlikely allows the observation of photon triplets, generated in a third-order spontaneous parametric down-conversion process in such fibers. The only efficient approach to the luminescence reduction is the hydrogen saturation of fiber samples, however, even in this case the level of residual luminescence is still too high for three-photon registration.

Study of higher-order correlation functions and photon statistics using multiphoton-subtracted states and quadrature measurements

The estimation of high order correlation function values is an important problem in the field of quantum computation. We show that the problem can be reduced to preparation and measurement of optical quantum states resulting after annihilation of a set number of quanta from the original beam. We apply this approach to explore various photon bunching regimes in optical states with gamma-compounded Poisson photon number statistics. We prepare and perform measurement of the thermal quantum state as well as states produced by subtracting one to ten photons from it. Maximum likelihood estimation is employed for parameter estimation. The goal of this research is the development of highly accurate procedures for generation and quality control of optical quantum states.

Analysis of quantum tomography protocol efficiency for triphoton polarization states

Reliable generation and measurement of triphoton states has yet to be achieved in laboratory. We give an overview of the problems in generating and measuring triphoton quantum states and analyze several protocols of quantum measurements, which allow for high precision of reconstruction when sizes of available statistical data samples are limited. The tomography procedure under investigation is based on root approach to state estimation. In particular, we use the generalized Fisher information matrix to assess the accuracy of the quantum state parameters measurement. We use tomographic protocols, based on the symmetry of the Platonic solids. We demonstrate the capability to reconstruct triphoton quantum states with precision close to the maximum achievable value allowed by quantum mechanics

Three-photon generation by means of third-order spontaneous parametric down-conversion in bulk crystals

We investigate the third order spontaneous parametric down-conversion process in a nonlinear media with inversion centers. Specifically, we analyze in details the three-photon differential count rate in unit frequency and angular regions, total count rate and measurement time for rutile and calcite crystals which have comparatively large cubic susceptibilities. Special attention is given to consideration of limited frequency and angular detection ranges in order to calculate experimentally available detection rate values.

Broadband biphotons in a single spatial mode

We demonastrate experimental technique for generating spatially single-mode broadband biphoton field. The method is based on dispersive optical element which precisely tailors the structure of type-I SPDC frequency angular spectrum in order to shift different spectral components to a single angular mode. Spatial mode filtering is realized by coupling biphotons into a single-mode optical fiber.

Biphoton Spectrum Control

The main methods for controlling the biphoton field, as well as the problems for which the width and the shape of the spectrum of the biphoton field are of decisive importance, are discussed. The method for controlling the spectrum of the spontaneous parametric downconversion of light based on the spatial modulation of the refractive indices of a nonlinear crystal in which the generation of biphotons has been analyzed. Modulation is due to the thermo-optic and electro-optic effects.
