Ultrafast quasiparticle relaxation dynamics in normal metals and heavy fermion materials

We present a detailed theoretical study of the ultrafast quasiparticle relaxation dynamics observed in normal metals and heavy fermion materials with femtosecond time-resolved optical pump-probe spectroscopy. For normal metals, a nonthermal electron distribution gives rise to a temperature (T) independent electron-phonon relaxation time at low temperatures, in contrast to the T^{-3}-divergent behavior predicted by the two-temperature model. For heavy fermion compounds, we find that the blocking of electron-phonon scattering for heavy electrons within the density-of-states peak near the Fermi energy is crucial to explain the rapid increase of the electron-phonon relaxation time below the Kondo temperature. We propose the hypothesis that the slower Fermi velocity compared to the sound velocity provides a natural blocking mechanism due to energy and momentum conservation laws.

Atomic scale lattice distortions and domain wall profiles

We present an atomic scale theory of lattice distortions using strain related variables and their constraint equations. Our approach connects constrained {\it atomic length} scale variations to {\it continuum} elasticity and describes elasticity at several length scales. We apply the approach to a two-dimensional square lattice with a monatomic basis, and find the elastic deformations and hierarchical atomic relaxations in the vicinity of a domain wall between two different homogeneous strain states. We clarify the microscopic origin of gradient terms, some of which are included phenomenologically in Ginzburg-Landau theory, by showing that they are anisotropic.

Atomic scale elastic textures coupled to electrons in superconductors

We present an atomic scale theory of lattice distortions using strain related variables and their constraint equations. Our approach connects constrained atomic length scale variations to continuum elasticity and describes elasticity at all length scales. We apply the general approach to a two-dimensional square lattice with a monatomic basis, and find the atomic scale elastic textures around a structural domain wall and a single defect, as exemplary textures. We clarify the microscopic origin of gradient terms, some of which are included phenomenologically in Landau-Ginzburg theory. The obtained elastic textures are used to investigate the effects of elasticity-driven lattice deformation on the nanoscale electronic structure in superconductor by solving the Bogliubov-de Gennes equations with the electronic degrees of freedom coupled to the lattice ones. It is shown that the order parameter is depressed in the regions where the lattice deformation takes place. The calculated local density of states suggests the electronic structure is strongly modulated as a response to the lattice deformation-- the elasticity propagates the electronic response over long distances. In particular, it is possible for the trapping of low-lying quasiparticle states around the defects. These predictions could be directly tested by STM experiments in superconducting materials.

Elasticity-Driven Nanoscale Electronic Structure in Superconductors

The effects of long-range anisotropic elastic deformations on electronic structure in superconductors are analyzed within the framework of the Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations. Cases of twin boundaries and isolated defects are considered as illustrations. We find that the superconducting order parameter is depressed in the regions where pronounced lattice deformation occurs. The calculated local density of states suggests that the electronic structure is strongly modulated in response to lattice deformations, and propagates to longer distances. In particular, this allows the trapping of low-lying quasiparticle states around defects. Some of our predictions can be directly tested by STM experiments.

Quasiparticle relaxation dynamics in heavy fermion compounds

We present the first femtosecond studies of electron-phonon (e-ph) thermalization in heavy fermion compounds. The e-ph thermalization time tau_{ep} increases below the Kondo temperature by more than two orders of magnitude as T = 0 K is approached. Analysis using the two-temperature model and numerical simulations based on Boltzmann's equations suggest that this anomalous slowing down of the e-ph thermalization derives from the large electronic specific heat and the suppresion of scattering between heavy electrons and phonons.

Strain selection of charge and orbital ordering patterns in half-doped manganites

Theoretical and computational results are presented clarifying the role of long-ranged strain interactions in determining the charge and orbital ordering in colossal magnetoresistance manganites. The strain energy contribution is found to be of order 20-30 meV/Mn and in particular stabilizes the anomalous 'zig-zag chain' order observed in many half-doped manganites.

Ground state properties of ferromagnetic metal/conjugated polymer interfaces

We theoretically investigate the ground state properties of ferromagnetic metal/conjugated polymer interfaces. The work is partially motivated by recent experiments in which injection of spin polarized electrons from ferromagnetic contacts into thin films of conjugated polymers was reported. We use a one-dimensional nondegenerate Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) Hamiltonian to describe the conjugated polymer and one-dimensional tight-binding models to describe the ferromagnetic metal. We consider both a model for a conventional ferromagnetic metal, in which there are no explicit structural degrees of freedom, and a model for a half-metallic ferromagnetic colossal magnetoresistance (CMR) oxide which has explicit structural degrees of freedom. The Fermi energy of the magnetic metallic contact is adjusted to control the degree of electron transfer into the polymer. We investigate electron charge and spin transfer from the ferromagnetic metal to the organic polymer, and structural relaxation near the interface. Bipolarons are the lowest energy charge state in the bulk polymer for the nondegenerate SSH model Hamiltonian. As a result electrons (or holes) transferred into the bulk of the polymer form spinless bipolarons. However, there can be spin density in the polymer localized near the interface.

Superconductivity in Magnetically Ordered CeTe$_{1.82}$

We report the discovery of pressure-induced superconductivity in a semimetallic magnetic material CeTe$_{1.82}$. The superconducting transition temperature $T_{SC}$ = 2.7 K (well below the magnetic ordering temperatures) under pressure ($>$ 2 kbar) is remarkably high, considering the relatively low carrier density due to a charge-density-wave transition associated with lattice modulation. The coexisting magnetic structure of a mixed ferromagnetism and antiferromagnetism can provide a clue for this high $T_{SC}$. We discuss a theoretical model for its possible pairing symmetry and pairing mechanism.

Effects of uniaxial strain in LaMnO_3

The effects of uniaxial strain on the structural, orbital, optical, and magnetic properties of LaMnO_3 are calculated using a general elastic energy expression, along with a tight-binding parameterization of the band theory. Tensile uniaxial strain of the order of 2 % (i.e., of the order of magnitude of those induced in thin films by lattice mismatch with substrates) is found to lead to changes in the magnetic ground state, leading to dramatic changes in the band structure and optical conductivity spectrum. The magnetostriction effect associated with the Neel transition of bulk(unstrained) LaMnO_3 is also determined. Due to the Jahn-Teller coupling, the uniform tetragonal distortion mode is softer in LaMnO_3 than in doped cubic manganates. Reasons why the observed (ππ0) orbital ordering is favored over a (πππ) periodicity are discussed.

Anisotropy and temperature dependence of the optical conductivity in LaMnO_3

A tight binding parameterization of the band structure, along with a mean field treatment of Hund, electron-electron, and electron-lattice couplings, is used to obtain the full optical conductivity tensor of LaMnO_3 as a function of temperature. We predict striking changes with temperature in the functional form and magnitude of the optical absorption. Comparison of our results to data will determine the Hund, electron-lattice, and electron-electron interactions.

Interplay of charge and orbital ordering in manganese perovskites

A model of localized classical electrons coupled to lattice degrees of freedom and, via the Coulomb interaction, to each other, has been studied to gain insight into the charge and orbital ordering observed in lightly doped manganese perovskites. Expressions are obtained for the minimum energy and ionic displacements caused by given hole and electron orbital configurations. The expressions are analyzed for several hole configurations, including that experimentally observed by Yamada et al. in La_{7/8}Sr_{1/8}MnO_3. We find that, although the preferred charge and orbital ordering depend sensitively on parameters, there are ranges of the parameters in which the experimentally observed hole configuration has the lowest energy. For these parameter values we also find that the energy differences between different hole configurations are on the order of the observed charge ordering transition temperature. The effects of additional strains are also studied. Some results for La_{1/2}Ca_{1/2}MnO_3 are presented, although our model may not adequately describe this material because the high temperature phase is metallic.

Optical Conductivity of Manganites: Crossover from Jahn-Teller Small Polaron to Coherent Transport in the Ferromagnetic State

We report on the optical properties of the hole-doped manganites Nd_{0.7}Sr _{0.3}MnO_{3}, La_{0.7}Ca_{0.3}MnO_{3}, and La_{0.7}Sr_{0.3}MnO_{3}. The low-energy optical conductivity in the paramagnetic-insulating state of these materials is characterized by a broad maximum near 1 eV. This feature shifts to lower energy and grows in optical oscillator strength as the temperature is lowered into the ferromagnetic state. It remains identifiable well below Tc and transforms eventually into a Drude-like response. This optical behavior and the activated transport in the paramagnetic state of these materials are consistent with a Jahn-Teller small polaron. The optical spectra and oscillator strength changes compare well with models that include both double exchange and the dynamic Jahn-Teller effect in the description of the electronic structure.
