Charged Ising Model of Neutron Star Matter

Background: The inner crust of a neutron star is believed to consist of Coulomb-frustrated complex structures known as "nuclear pasta" that display interesting and unique low-energy dynamics. Purpose: To elucidate the structure and composition of the neutron-star crust as a function of temperature, density, and proton fraction. Methods: A new lattice-gas model, the "Charged-Ising Model" (CIM), is introduced to simulate the behavior of neutron-star matter. Preliminary Monte Carlo simulations on 30^3 lattices are performed for a variety of temperatures, densities, and proton fractions. Results: Results are obtained for the heat capacity, pair-correlation function, and static structure factor for a variety of conditions appropriate to the inner stellar crust. Conclusions: Although relatively simple, the CIM captures the essence of Coulomb frustration that is required to simulate the subtle dynamics of the inner stellar crust. Moreover, the computationally demanding long-range Coulomb interactions have been pre-computed at the appropriate lattice sites prior to the start of the simulation resulting in enormous computational gains. This work demonstrates the feasibility of future CIM simulations involving a large number of particles as a function of density, temperature, and proton fraction.

Monopole oscillations in light nuclei with a molecular dynamics approach

Collective monopole vibrations are studied in the framework of an antisymmetrized version of molecular dynamics as a function of the vibration amplitude. The giant monopole resonance energy in ${}^{40}Ca$ is sensitive to the incompressibility of the effective interaction, in good agreement with complete time-dependent Hartree-Fock calculations. The collective response of ${}^{12}C$, ${}^{16}O$ and ${}^{24}Mg$ is also studied. For these lighter nuclei that have an important contribution of an $α$-clustered component, different frequencies are observed, corresponding to two different types of vibrations associated with breathing and moving of the underlying clusters. Possible connections with direct breakup into $α$ clusters at high excitation energy are discussed.

From energy-density functionals to mean field potentials: a systematic derivation

In this paper we present a systematic method to solve the variational problem of the derivation of a self-consistent Kohn-Sham field from an arbitrary local energy functional. We illustrate this formalism with an application in nuclear physics and give the general mean field associated to the widely used Skyrme effective interaction.

Anomalous thermodynamics and phase transitions of neutron-star matter

In this letter we show that the presence of the long-range Coulomb force in dense stellar matter implies that the total charge cannot be associated with a chemical potential, even if it is a conserved quantity. As a further consequence, the analytical properties of the partition sum are modified, changing the order of the phase transitions and affecting the possible occurrence of critical behaviours. The peculiar thermodynamic properties of the system can be understood introducing a model hamiltonian in which each charge is independently neutralized by a uniform background of opposite charge.

Ising analogue to compact-star matter

By constructing an Ising analogue of compact-star matter at sub-saturation density we explored the effect of Coulomb frustration on the nuclear liquid-gas phase transition. Our conclusions is twofold. First, the range of temperatures where inhomogeneous phases form expands with increasing Coulomb-field strength. Second, within the approximation of uniform electron distribution, the limiting point upon which the phase-coexistence region ends does not exhibit any critical behaviour. Possible astrophysics consequences and thermodynamical connections are discussed.

Thermodynamics of compact-star matter within an ising approach

In the formation and evolution of compact stars, nuclear matter explores high thermal excursions and is the site of intense neutrino emission. Neutrino transport as well as structural properties of this matter depend on the presence of inhomogeneous phases (named "pasta" phases), which are the result of Coulomb frustration of the Liquid-Gas phase transition. We take into account charge fluctuations by employing a frustrated lattice-gas model to which we impose a neutrality constraint by the addition of an homogeneous background of charge, representing delocalised electrons. Within this schematic model we highlight a generaic feature of the phase-transition phenomenology: the temperature interval where pasta phases are formed is enhanced by Coulomb-frustration effects. This result is at variance with the behaviour of frustrated ferromagnetic systems as well as hot nuclei and mean-field approaches. Moreover, the region of phase coexistence is not found to end upon a critical point, indicating that no critical opalescence can occur in compact-star matter.
