Three-body model calculations for 16C nucleus

We apply a three-body model consisting of two valence neutrons and the core nucleus $^{14}$C in order to investigate the ground state properties and the electronic quadrupole transition of the $^{16}$C nucleus. The discretized continuum spectrum within a large box is taken into account by using a single-particle basis obtained from a Woods-Saxon potential. The calculated B(E2) value from the first 2$^+$ state to the ground state shows good agreement with the observed data with the core polarization charge which reproduces the experimental B(E2) value for $^{15}$C. We also show that the present calculation well accounts for the longitudinal momentum distribution of $^{15}$C fragment from the breakup of $^{16}$C nucleus. We point out that the dominant ($d_{5/2})^2$ configuration in the ground state of $^{16}$C plays a crucial role for these agreement.

Recent developments in quasi-elastic scattering around the Coulomb barrier

We discuss two recent topics on heavy-ion quasi-elastic scattering at energies around the Coulomb barrier. The first topic is an application of quasi-elastic scattering at deep-subbarrier energies to extracting the surface diffuseness parameter of the nucleus-nucleus potential. The second topic is a coupled-channels analysis for the quasi-elastic barrier distribution for the $^{70}$Zn + $^{208}$Pb reaction. We show that the coupled-channels calculations which include the multi-phonon excitations in the colliding nuclei reproduce reasonably well the experimental excitation function for quasi-elastic scattering at backward angles and the barrier distribution for this reaction.

Effect of electronic environment on neutrino-nucleus reactions at r-process sites

We discuss effects of the electron plasma on charged-current neutrino-nucleus reaction, $(ν_e,e^-)$ in a core-collapse supernova environment. We first discuss the electron screening effect on the final state interaction between the outgoing electron and the daughter nucleus. To this end, we solve the Dirac equation for the outgoing electron with the screened Coulomb potential obtained with the Thomas-Fermi approximation. In addition to the screening effect, we also discuss the Pauli blocking effect due to the environmental electrons on the spectrum of the outgoing electron. We find that both effects hinder the cross section of the charged-current reaction, especially at low incident energies.

Sub-barrier Fusion Cross Sections with Energy Density Formalism

We discuss the applicability of the energy density formalism (EDF) for heavy-ion fusion reactions at sub-barrier energies. For this purpose, we calculate the fusion excitation function and the fusion barrier distribution for the reactions of $^{16}$O with $^{154,}$$^{144}$Sm,$^{186}$W and $^{208}$Pb with the coupled-channels method. We also discuss the effect of saturation property on the fusion cross section for the reaction between two $^{64}$Ni nuclei, in connection to the so called steep fall-off phenomenon of fusion cross sections at deep sub-barrier energies.

No-recoil approximation to knock-on exchange potential in the double folding model for heavy-ion collisions

We propose the no-recoil approximation, which is valid for heavy systems, for a double folding nucleus-nucleus potential. With this approximation, the non-local knock-on exchange contribution becomes a local form. We discuss the applicability of this approximation for the elastic scattering of $^6$Li + $^{40}$Ca system. We find that, for this system and heavier, the no-recoil approximation works as good as another widely used local approximation which employs a local plane wave for the relative motion between the colliding nuclei. We also compare the results of the no-recoil calculations with those of the zero-range approximation often used to handle the knock-on exchange effect.

Probing internucleus potential with large-angle quasi-elastic scattering

Recent measurements for fusion cross section at energies around the Coulomb barrier have systematically indicated a significant deviation of fusion cross sections from a prediction of double-folding model. It has been argued that the deviation can be accounted for if one uses a large value of surface diffuseness parameter for a Woods-Saxon internuclear potential. We investigate this problem using large-angle quasi-elastic scattering, that is a good counterpart of fusion reaction. Towards a reconciliation of the apparent anomaly in the diffuseness parameter for fusion reactions, we also discuss possible ingredients which are missing in present nuclear reaction models. Those include a deviation from the frozen density approximation, the effect of antisymmetrization and the role of coordinate dependent moment of inertia for the relative motion between the colliding nuclei.

Deformation parameter for diffuse density

In extracting deformation parameters from multipole moments for deformed nuclei, one commonly uses the formulas which are based on a sharp-cut density distribution. We discuss a possible ambiguity for this procedure and clarify the role of diffuseness parameter of the density distribution. For this purpose, we use a deformed Woods-Saxon density as well as a density distribution obtained from the self-consistent relativistic mean-field (RMF) model. We show that the formula using a root-mean-square radius instead of a sharp-cut radius requires a large correction due to a finite surface diffuseness parameter even for stable nuclei. An implication to neutron-rich nuclei is also discussed.

Probing surface diffuseness of nucleus-nucleus potential with quasielastic scattering at deep sub-barrier energies

We perform a systematic study on the surface property of nucleus-nucleus potential in heavy-ion reactions using large-angle quasielastic scattering at energies well below the Coulomb barrier. At these energies, the quasielastic scattering can be well described by a single-channel potential model. Exploiting this fact, we point out that systems which involve spherical nuclei require the diffuseness parameter of around 0.60 fm in order to fit the experimental data, while systems with a deformed target between 0.8 fm and 1.1 fm.

An extra push from entrance-channel effects

Symmetric heavy-ion collisions are known to display an `extra-push' effect. That is, the energy at which the s-wave transmission is 0.5 lies significantly higher than the nominal Coulomb barrier. Despite this, however, the capture cross section is still greatly enhanced below the uncoupled barrier. It is shown that this phenomenon can be simply explained in terms of entrance-channel effects which account for long-range Coulomb excitations.

Pairing correlations in nuclei on the neutron-drip line

Paring correlations in weakly bound nuclei on the edge of neutron drip line is studied by using a three-body model. A density-dependent contact interaction is employed to calculate the ground state of halo nuclei $^{6}$He and $^{11}$Li, as well as a skin nucleus $^{24}$O. Dipole excitations in these nuclei are also studied within the same model. We point out that the di-neutron type correlation plays a dominant role in the halo nuclei $^{6}$He and $^{11}$Li having the coupled spin of the two neutrons $S$=0, while the correlation similar to the BCS type is important in $^{24}$O. Contributions of the spin $S$=1 and S=0 configurations are separately discussed in the low energy dipole excitations.

Surface diffuseness anomaly in heavy-ion potentials for large-angle quasielastic scattering

Recent high precision experimental data for heavy-ion fusion reactions at subbarrier energies systematically show that a surprisingly large surface diffuseness parameter for a Woods-Saxon potential is required in order to fit the data. We point out that experimental data for quasi-elastic scattering at backward angles also favor a similar large value of surface diffuseness parameter. Consequently, a double folding approach fails to reproduce the experimental excitation function of quasielastic scattering for the $^{16}$O + $^{154}$Sm system at energies around the Coulomb barrier. We also show that the deviation of the ratio of the quasielastic to the Rutherford cross sections from unity at deep subbarrier energies offers an unambiguous way to determine the value of the surface diffuseness parameter in the nucleus-nucleus potential.

Quasi-elastic barrier distribution as a tool for investigating unstable nuclei

The method of fusion barrier distribution has been widely used to interpret the effect of nuclear structure on heavy-ion fusion reactions around the Coulomb barrier. We discuss a similar, but less well known, barrier distribution extracted from large-angle quasi-elastic scattering. We argue that this method has several advantages over the fusion barrier distribution, and offers an interesting tool for investigating unstable nuclei.

Perturbative HFB model for many-body pairing correlations

We develop a perturbative model to treat the off-diagonal components in the Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov (HFB) transformation matrix, which are neglected in the BCS approximation. Applying the perturbative model to a weakly bound nucleus $^{84}$Ni, it is shown that the perturbative approach reproduces well the solutions of the HFB method both for the quasi-particle energies and the radial dependence of quasi-particle wave functions. We find that the non-resonant part of the continuum single-particle state can acquire an appreciable occupation probability when there exists a weakly bound state close to the Fermi surface. This result originates from the strong coupling between the continuum particle state and the weakly bound state, and is absent in the BCS approximation. The limitation of the BCS approximation is pointed out in comparison with the HFB and the present perturbative model.

How does breakup influence near-barrier fusion of weakly bound light nuclei ?

The influence on the fusion process of coupling to collective degrees of freedom has been explored. The significant enhancement of he fusion cross setion at sub-barrier energies was understood in terms of the dynamical processes arising from strong couplings to collective inelastic excitations of the target and projectile. However, in the case of reactions where breakup becomes an important process, conflicing model predictions and experimental results have been reported in the literature. Excitation functions for sub- and near-barrier total (complete + incomplete) fusion cross sections have been measured for the $^{6,7}$Li + $^{59}$Co at the Vivitron facility and at the 8UD Pelletron tandem facility using standard $γ$-ray techniques. The data extend to medium-mass systems previous works exploring the coupling effects in fusion reactions of both lighter and heavier systems. Results of continuum-discretized coupled channel (CDCC) calculations indicate a small enhancement of total fusion for the more weakly bound $^{6}$Li at sub-barrier energies, with similar cross sections for both reactions at and above the barrier. A systematic study of $^{4,6}$He induced fusion reactions with the CDCC method is in progress. The understanding of the reaction dynamics involving couplings to the breakup channels requires th explicit measurement of precise elastic scattering data as well as yields leading to the breakup itself. Recent coincidence experiments for $^{6,7}$Li + $^{59}$Co are addressing this issue. The particle identification of the breakup products have been achieved by measuring the three-body final-state correlations.

WKB approximation for multi-channel barrier penetrability

Using a method of local transmission matrix, we generalize the well-known WKB formula for a barrier penetrability to multi-channel systems. We compare the WKB penetrability with a solution of the coupled-channels equations, and show that the WKB formula works well at energies well below the lowest adiabatic barrier. We also discuss the eigen-channel approach to a multi-channel tunneling, which may improve the performance of the WKB formula near and above the barrier.

Large-angle scattering and quasi-elastic barrier distributions

We study in detail the barrier distributions extracted from large-angle quasi-elastic scattering of heavy ions at energies near the Coulomb barrier. Using a closed-form expression for scattering from a single barrier, we compare the quasi-elastic barrier distribution with the corresponding test function for fusion. We examine the isocentrifugal approximation in coupled-channels calculations of quasi-elastic scattering and find that for backward angles, it works well, justifying the concept of a barrier distribution for scattering processes. This method offers an interesting tool for investigating unstable nuclei. We illustrate this for the $^{32}$Mg + $^{208}$Pb reaction, where the quadrupole collectivity of the neutron-rich $^{32}$Mg remains to be clarified experimentally.

Fusion and breakup in the reactions of 6,7Li and 9Be

We develop a three body classical trajectory Monte Carlo (CTMC) method to dicsuss the effect of the breakup process on heavy-ion fusion reactions induced by weakly bound nuclei. This method follows the classical trajectories of breakup fragments after the breakup takes place, and thus provides an unambiguous separation between complete and incomplete fusion cross sections. Applying this method to the fusion reaction $^{6}$Li + $^{209}$Bi, we find that there is a significant contribution to the total complete fusion cross sections from the process where all the breakup fragments are captured by the target nucleus (i.e., the breakup followed by complete fusion).

Reaction dynamics for fusion of weakly-bound nuclei

We discuss several open problems of fusion reactions induced by weakly bound nuclei. For this purpose, we solve a one dimensional three-body Hamiltonian with the coupled-channels formalism. We show that the continuum-continuum couplings substantially reduce the total fusion probability at energies above the barrier compared with the no-breakup case, although the fusion probability remains enhanced at subbarrier energies. We then discuss a role of transfer process in fusion of weakly bound nuclei, and point out that removing spurious Pauli forbidden transfer components from the calculation may be crucial at energies below the barrier. Calculations based on the three-body classical trajectory Monte Carlo (CTMC) method are also presented in order to discuss how to model complete fusion process.
