Variational Formulation of a Hybrid Kinetic and Gyrokinetic Model for Astrophysical and Laboratory Plasmas

We present a Lagrangian model that encapsulates fully kinetic ions and gyrokinetic electrons for solar wind electromagnetic turbulence. Using a consistent method, where both electrons and protons are treated with the same mathematical formalism, we derive and implement a model in which high-frequency waves and kinetic electron effects are described in a computationally cost-efficient way. Higher-order Lie-transform perturbation methods applied to Hamiltonian formulation of guiding center motion are used to describe the dynamics of particles and fields. We use a variational approach to derive field equations for closure of the system.

Superconducting gap and pseudogap in the surface states of the iron-based superconductor PrFeAsO$_{1-y}$ studied by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy

In order to study the possible superconductivity at the polar surfaces of 1111-type iron-based superconductors, which is doped with a large amount of holes in spite of the electron doping in bulk materials, we have performed angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) studies on superconducting PrFeAsO$_{1-y}$~crystals. We have indeed observed the opening of a superconducting gap on surface-derived hole pockets as well as on a bulk-derived hole pocket. The superconducting gap is found to open on the surface-derived hole pockets below the bulk $T_c$, which suggests that the surface superconductivity is possibly induced by proximity effect from the bulk. We have also observed the opening of a large pseudogap on the surface-derived hole pockets, which is similar to the pseudogap in 122-type bulk superconductors doped with a smaller amount of holes. This suggests that the opening of a large pseudogap is a characteristic property of hole-doped iron-based superconductors.

Nematicity in the pseudogap state of cuprate superconductors revealed by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy

The nature of the pseudogap and its relationship with superconductivity are one of the central issues of cuprate superconductors. Recently, a possible scenario has been proposed that the pseudogap state is a distinct phase characterized by spontaneous rotational symmetry breaking called "nematicity" based on transport and magnetic susceptibility measurements, where the symmetry breaking was observed below the pseudogap temperature $T^*$. Here, we report a temperature-dependent ARPES study of nematicity in slightly overdoped Bi${}_{1.7}$Pb${}_{0.5}$Sr${}_{1.9}$CaCu${}_2$O${}_{8+δ}$ triggered by a uniaxial strain applied along one of the Cu-O bond directions. While the nematicity was enhanced in the pseudogap state as in the previous studies, it was suppressed in the superconducting state. These results indicate that the pseudogap state is characterized by spontaneous rotational symmetry breaking and that the nematicity may compete with superconductivity. These new experimental insights may provide clues for the nature of the pseudogap and its relation to the superconductivity.

Extended superconducting dome of electron-doped cuprates after protect annealing revealed by ARPES

The electron-doped cuprates are usually characterized by a more robust antiferromagnetic phase and a much narrower superconducting (SC) dome than those of the hole-doped counterparts. Recently, bulk single crystals of Pr1.3-xLa0.7CexCuO4-δ (PLCCO) prepared by the protect annealing method have been studied extensively and revealed many intriguing properties that were different from those obtained from samples annealed by the conventional methods. Here, we report on a systematic angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy study of PLCCO single crystals after protect annealing. The results indicate that the actual electron concentration (nFS ) estimated from the Fermi-surface area is significantly larger than the Ce concentration x and the new nFS-based SC dome of PLCCO is more extended towards the overdoped side than the x-based SC dome derived for samples prepared using the conventional annealing method.

Search for Astronomical Neutrinos from Blazar TXS0506+056 in Super-Kamiokande

We report a search for astronomical neutrinos in the energy region from several GeV to TeV in the direction of the blazar TXS0506+056 using the Super-Kamiokande detector following the detection of a 100 TeV neutrino from the same location by the IceCube collaboration. Using Super-Kamiokande neutrino data across several data samples observed from April 1996 to February 2018 we have searched for both a total excess above known backgrounds across the entire period as well as localized excesses on smaller time scales in that interval. No significant excess nor significant variation in the observed event rate are found in the blazar direction. Upper limits are placed on the electron and muon neutrino fluxes at 90\% confidence level as $6.03 \times 10^{-7}$ and $4.52 \times 10^{-7}$ to $9.26 \times 10^{-10}$ [${\rm erg}/{\rm cm}^2/{\rm s}$], respectively.

$d$-wave superconducting gap observed in protect-annealed electron-doped cuprate superconductors Pr$_{1.3-x}$La$_{0.7}$Ce$_{x}$CuO$_{4}$

For electron-doped cuprates, the strong suppression of antiferromagnetic spin correlation by efficient reduction annealing by the "protect-annealing" method leads to superconductivity not only with lower Ce concentrations but also with higher transition temperatures. To reveal the nature of this superconducting state, we have performed angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy measurements of protect-annealed electron-doped superconductors Pr$_{1.3-x}$La$_{0.7}$Ce$_{x}$CuO$_{4}$ and directly investigated the superconducting gap. The gap was found to be consistent with $d$-wave symmetry, suggesting that strong electron correlation persists and hence antiferromagnetic spin fluctuations remain a candidate that mediates Copper pairing in the protect-annealed electron-doped cuprates.

Non-trivial surface states of samarium hexaboride at the (111) surface

The peculiar metallic electronic states observed in the Kondo insulator, samarium hexaboride (SmB$_6$), has stimulated considerable attention among those studying non-trivial electronic phenomena. However, experimental studies of these states have led to controversial conclusions mainly to the difficulty and inhomogeneity of the SmB$_6$ crystal surface. Here, we show the detailed electronic structure of SmB$_6$ with angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy measurements of the three-fold (111) surface where only two inequivalent time-reversal-invariant momenta (TRIM) exist. We observe the metallic two-dimensional state was dispersed across the bulk Kondo gap. Its helical in-plane spin polarisation around the surface TRIM suggests that SmB$_6$ is topologically non-trivial, according to the topological classification theory for weakly correlated systems. Based on these results, we propose a simple picture of the controversial topological classification of SmB$_6$.

Effect of Coulomb interaction on the two-dimensional electronic structure of the van der Waals ferromagnet Cr$_2$Ge$_2$Te$_6$

In order to investigate the electronic properties of the semiconducting van der Waals ferromagnet Cr$_2$Ge$_2$Te$_6$ (CGT), where ferromagnetic layers are bonded through van der Waals forces, we have performed angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) measurements and density-functional-theory (DFT+U) calculations. The valence-band maximum at the Γ point is located $\sim$ 0.2 eV below the Fermi level, consistent with the semiconducting property of CGT. Comparison of the experimental density of states with the DFT calculation has suggested that Coulomb interaction between the Cr 3d electrons U$_{\rm eff}$ $\sim$ 1.1 eV. The DFT+U calculation indicates that magnetic coupling between Cr atoms within the layer is ferromagnetic if Coulomb U $_{\rm eff}$ is smaller than 3.0 eV and that the inter-layer coupling is ferromagnetic below U$_{\rm eff}$ $\sim$ 1.0 eV. We therefore conclude that, for U$_{\rm eff}$ deduced by the experiment, the intra-layer Cr-Cr coupling is ferromagnetic and the inter-layer coupling is near the boundary between ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic, which means experimentally deduced U$_{\rm eff}$ is consistent with theoretical ferromagnetic condition.

Angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy of the low-energy electronic structure of superconducting Pr$_2$CuO$_4$ driven by oxygen non-stoichiometry

Bulk crystals of electron-doped cuprates with the T'-type structure require both Ce substitutions and reduction annealing for the emergence of superconductivity while the reduction annealing alone can induce superconductivity in thin films of the T'-type cuprates. In order to reveal low-energy electronic states which are responsible for the superconductivity, we have conducted angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy measurements on thin films of the superconducting Ce-free T'-type cuprate Pr$_2$CuO$_4$. The results indicate that the overall band structure and the Fermi surface area of the superconducting Pr$_2$CuO$_4$ are similar to those of superconducting Ce-doped bulk single crystals, highlighting the importance of the actual electron concentration rather than the Ce concentration when discussing the physical properties of the T'-type cuprates.

Fast computation of MadGraph amplitudes on graphics processing unit (GPU)

Continuing our previous studies on QED and QCD processes, we use the graphics processing unit (GPU) for fast calculations of helicity amplitudes for general Standard Model (SM) processes. Additional HEGET codes to handle all SM interactions are introduced, as well assthe program MG2CUDA that converts arbitrary MadGraph generated HELAS amplitudess(FORTRAN) into HEGET codes in CUDA. We test all the codes by comparing amplitudes and cross sections for multi-jet srocesses at the LHC associated with production of single and double weak bosonss a top-quark pair, Higgs boson plus a weak boson or a top-quark pair, and multisle Higgs bosons via weak-boson fusion, where all the heavy particles are allowes to decay into light quarks and leptons with full spin correlations. All the helicity amplitudes computed by HEGET are found to agree with those comsuted by HELAS within the expected numerical accuracy, and the cross sections obsained by gBASES, a GPU version of the Monte Carlo integration program, agree wish those obtained by BASES (FORTRAN), as well as those obtained by MadGraph. The performance of GPU was over a factor of 10 faster than CPU for all processes except those with the highest number of jets.

Exploring Quantum Physics at the ILC

We review the ILC capabilities to explore the electroweak (EW) sector of the SM at high precision and the prospects of unveiling signals of BSM physics, either through the presence of new particles in higher-order corrections or via direct production of extra EW gauge bosons. This includes electroweak precision observables, global fits to the SM Higgs boson mass as well as triple and quartic gauge boson couplings.

(g-2)_mu and alpha(M_Z^2) re-evaluated using new precise data

We update our Standard Model predictions for g-2 of the muon and for the hadronic contributions to the running of the QED coupling, Delta alpha_had^(5)(M_Z^2). Particular emphasis is put on recent changes in the hadronic contributions from new data in the 2pi channel and from the energy region just below 2 GeV. In particular, for the e+e- -> pi+pi- contribution we include the recent `radiative return' data from KLOE and BaBar. We also include the recent BaBar data on other exclusive channels. We make a detailed study of the effect of replacing the measurements of the inclusive cross section, sigma(e+e- -> hadrons), by the sum of the exclusive channels in the energy interval 1.43 < sqrt{s} < 2 GeV, which includes a QCD sum-rule analysis of this energy region. Our favoured prediction for the muon anomalous magnetic moment is (g-2)/2 = (11659182.8 +- 4.9)*10^(-10) which is 3.3 sigma below the present world-average measurement. We compare our g-2 value with other recent calculations. Our prediction for the QED coupling, obtained via Delta alpha_had^(5)(M_Z^2) = (276.26 +- 1.38)*10^(-4), is alpha(M_Z^2)^(-1) = 128.944 +- 0.019.

HELAS and MadGraph with spin-3/2 particles

Fortran subroutines to calculate helicity amplitudes with massive spin-3/2 particles, such as massive gravitinos, which couple to the standard model and supersymmetric particles via the supercurrent, are added to the HELAS (HELicity Amplitude Subroutines) library. They are coded in such a way that arbitrary amplitudes with external gravitinos can be generated automatically by MadGraph, after slight modifications. All the codes have been tested carefully by making use of the gauge invariance of the helicity amplitudes.

Fast calculation of HELAS amplitudes using graphics processing unit (GPU)

We use the graphics processing unit (GPU) for fast calculations of helicity amplitudes of physics processes. As our first attempt, we compute $u\bar{u}\to nγ$ ($n=2$ to 8) processes in $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt{s} = 14$TeV by transferring the MadGraph generated HELAS amplitudes (FORTRAN) into newly developed HEGET ({\bf H}ELAS {\bf E}valuation with {\bf G}PU {\bf E}nhanced {\bf T}echnology) codes written in CUDA, a C-platform developed by NVIDIA for general purpose computing on the GPU. Compared with the usual CPU programs, we obtain 40-150 times better performance on the GPU.

Calculation of HELAS amplitudes for QCD processes using graphics processing unit (GPU)

We use a graphics processing unit (GPU) for fast calculations of helicity amplitudes of quark and gluon scattering processes in massless QCD. New HEGET ({\bf H}ELAS {\bf E}valuation with {\bf G}PU {\bf E}nhanced {\bf T}echnology) codes for gluon self-interactions are introduced, and a C++ program to convert the MadGraph generated FORTRAN codes into HEGET codes in CUDA (a C-platform for general purpose computing on GPU) is created. Because of the proliferation of the number of Feynman diagrams and the number of independent color amplitudes, the maximum number of final state jets we can evaluate on a GPU is limited to 4 for pure gluon processes ($gg\to 4g$), or 5 for processes with one or more quark lines such as $q\bar{q}\to 5g$ and $qq\to qq+3g$. Compared with the usual CPU-based programs, we obtain 60-100 times better performance on the GPU, except for 5-jet production processes and the $gg\to 4g$ processes for which the GPU gain over the CPU is about 20.

Re-visiting Direct $J/ψ$ Production at the Fermilab Tevatron

We re-analyze the direct $\jp$ production processes at the Fermilab Tevatron in view of the recent observation at the B-factories, where both $\jp$ inclusive and exclusive production rates are found to be about an order of magnitude larger than the leading order estimates of non-relativistic QCD. The charm quark fragmentation to $\jp$, which is the dominant color-singlet process at high $p_T$, is normalized by the B-factory measurements. The process receives further enhancement due to the charm sea contribution which has so far been ignored in most analyses. After summing up all sub-process contributions, we find that the color-singlet mechanism alone can account for 20% to 90% of the observed direct $\jp$ high $p_T$ production. The polarization rate of the directly produced $\jp$ is sensitive to the fraction of the color-octet contribution, which is employed to fill the gap between the color-singlet prediction and experimental data. With a bigger $K$-factor for the charm quark fragmentation probability, we envisage a smaller matrix element for the color-octet $^3S_1^{(8)}$ state, and this can be examined at the LHC in near future.

Mixed QCD-electroweak contributions to Higgs-plus-dijet production at the LHC

We present a calculation of interference effects in Hjj production via gluon fusion and via vector boson fusion, respectively, beyond tree level. We reproduce results recently discussed in the literature, but go beyond this calculation by including a class of diagrams not considered previously. Special care is taken in developing a numerically stable and flexible parton level Monte-Carlo program which allows us to study cross sections and kinematic distributions within experimentally relevant selection cuts. Loop-induced interference contributions are found to exhibit kinematical distributions different in shape from vector boson fusion. Due to the small interference cross section and cancelation among different quark flavor contributions their impact on the signal process is found to be negligible in all regions of phase space, however.
