Novel Approach to Confront Electroweak Data and Theory

A novel approach to study electroweak physics at one-loop level in generic ${\rm SU(2)_L \times U(1)_Y}$ theories is introduced. It separates the 1-loop corrections into two pieces: process specific ones from vertex and box contributions, and universal ones from contributions to the gauge boson propagators. The latter are parametrized in terms of four effective form factors $\bar{e}^2(q^2)$, $\bar{s}^2(q^2)$, $\bar{g}_Z^2(q^2)$ and $\bar{g}_W^2 (q^2)$ corresponding to the $γγ$, $γZ$, $ZZ$ and $WW$ propagators. Under the assumption that only the Standard Model contributes to the process specific corrections, the magnitudes of the four form factors are determined at $q^2=0$ and at $q^2=\mmz$ by fitting to all available precision experiments. These values are then compared systematically with predictions of ${\rm SU(2)_L \times U(1)_Y}$ theories. In all fits $α_s(\mz)$ and $\barα(\mmz)$ are treated as external parameters in order to keep the interpretation as flexible as possible. The treatment of the electroweak data is presented in detail together with the relevant theoretical formulae used to interpret the data. No deviation from the Standard Model has been identified. Ranges of the top quark and Higgs boson masses are derived as functions of $α_s(\mz)$ and $\barα(\mmz)$. Also discussed are consequences of the recent precision measurement of the left-right asymmetry at SLC as well as the impact of a top quark mass and an improved $W$ mass measurement.

Gluon and Charm Distributions in the Photon

We study systematically the sensitivity of the photon structure function data on the gluon contents of the photon, by using the leading order Altarelli--Parisi (AP) equations. Charm quark contribution is studied in the quark parton model and by using the massive quark AP equations of Glück, Hoffmann and Reya. The present photon structure function data are found to allow wide range of gluon distributions in the photon. We give a set of six scale-dependent parton distributions in the photon (WHIT1 to WHIT6), which have systematically different gluon contents. Sensitivity of the structure function at small $x$ and that of the total charm quark production cross section to the effective gluon distribution are discussed.

Singe Top Production at LEP 200

We present exact tree level cross sections for the single top production process $e^- e^+ \rightarrow e^- \barν_e t \bar{b} $ at LEP~200. The results reproduce roughly those obtained earlier by using the equivalent real photon approximation and we confirm the observation that detecting a top heavier than half the c.m.~energy is not feasible at LEP~200. The calculation has been performed by a new automatic Feynman amplitude generator MadGraph which produces HELAS code for the helicity amplitudes.

Electroweak Radiative Corrections

A new framework to study electroweak physics at one-loop level in general ${\rm SU(2)_L \times U(1)_Y}$ theories is introduced. It separates the 1-loop corrections into two pieces: process specific ones from vertex and box contributions and the universal ones due to contributions to the gauge boson propagators. The latter are parametrized in terms of four effective form factors, $\bar{e}^2(q^2)$, $\bar{s}^2(q^2)$, $\bar{g}_Z^2(q^2)$, and $\bar{g}_W^2(q^2)$, correspondingly to $γγ$, $γZ$, $ZZ$, and $WW$ propagators. By assuming only the standard model contributions to the process specific corrections, the magnitudes of the four form factors are determined at $q^2=0$ and at $q^2=m_Z^2$ from all available precision experiments. These values are then compared systematically with the predictions of the ${\rm SU(2)_L \times U(1)_Y}$ theories. No deviation from the standard model has been identified. Plausible range of the top quark mass is then obtained for a given Higgs boson mass and $α_s$ .

Anomalous Higgs Boson Production and Decay

A non-standard symmetry breaking sector may lead to derivative couplings of the Higgs boson and thereby to anomalous interactions with the electroweak gauge bosons. In the framework of gauge-invariant effective Lagrangians the resulting changes in Higgs boson production and decay mechanisms are related to anomalous triple vector boson couplings. Using low energy constraints on the dimension-six operators in the effective Lagrangian, we discuss the size of deviations from SM predictions which may be expected in Higgs boson production and decay rates. Large enhancements are allowed {\it e.g.} in the $Z \to H γ$ and $H\to γγ$ partial decay widths, leading to $Z\to γγγ$ events at LEP.

Probing the Scalar Sector in $e^+ e^- \to Z ϕ$

We study possible deviations from the Standard Model in the reaction $e^+e^- \to Zϕ$, where $ϕ$ denotes a spinless neutral boson. We show how the $Z$ decay angular correlation can be used to extract detailed information on the $ϕ$ couplings, such as the parity of $ϕ$, radiatively induced form factor effects and possible CP violation in the scalar sector.

Consequences of a Possible Di-Gamma Resonace at TRISTAN

If high mass di-gamma events observed at LEP are due to the production of a di-gamma resonance via its leptonic coupling, its consequences can be observed at TRISTAN. We find that a predicted $Z$ decay branching rate is too small to account for the observed events if the resonance spin is zero, due to a strong cancellation in the decay amplitudes. Such a cancellation is absent if the resonance has a spin two. We study the consequences of a tensor production in the processes $e^+e^- \to e^+e^-$, $μ^+μ^-$ and $γ\,γ$ at TRISTAN energies. Complete helicity amplitudes with tensor boson exchange contributions are given, and the signal can clearly be identified from various distributions. TRISTAN experiments are also sensitive to the virtual tensor boson exchange effects, which reduce to the contact interaction terms in the high mass limit.
