Spin-charge separation in strongly interacting finite ladder rings

We study the conductance through Aharonov-Bohm finite ladder rings with strongly interacting electrons, modelled by the prototypical t-J model. For a wide range of parameters we observe characteristic dips in the conductance as a function of magnetic flux, predicted so far only in chains which are a signature of spin and charge separation. These results open the possibility of observing this peculiar many-body phenomenon in anisotropic ladder systems and in real nanoscopic devices.

Static and dynamical properties of elliptic quantum corrals

Due to their focalizing properties, elliptic quantum corrals present very interesting physical behaviors. In this work, we analyze static and dynamical properties of these systems. Results are presented for realistic values of the parameters, which might be useful for comparison with experiments. We study noninteracting corrals and their response to several kinds of external perturbations, observing that, for realistic values of the Fermi level, the dynamics involves only a few number of excited states, making the system quite robust with respect to possible sources of decoherence. We also study the system in the presence of two S=1/2 impurities located at its foci, which interact with the electrons of the ellipse via a superexchange interaction J. This system is diagonalized numerically and properties such as the spin gap and spin-spin static and dynamical correlations are studied. We find that, for small J, both spins are locked in a singlet or triplet state, for even or odd filling, respectively, and its spin dynamics consists mainly of a single peak above the spin gap. In this limit, we can define an effective Heisenberg Hamiltonian to describe the low-energy properties. For larger J, more states are involved and the localized spins decorrelate in a manner similar to the Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida-Kondo transition for the two-impurity problem.

Mott transition in the Hubbard model away from particle-hole symmetry

We solve the Dynamical Mean Field Theory equations for the Hubbard model away from the particle-hole symmetric case using the Density Matrix Renormalization Group method. We focus our study on the region of strong interactions and finite doping where two solutions coexist. We obtain precise predictions for the boundaries of the coexistence region. In addition, we demonstrate the capabilities of this precise method by obtaining the frequency dependent optical conductivity spectra.

Two-state behaviour of Kondo trimers

The electronic properties and spectroscopic features of a magnetic trimer with a Kondo-like coupling to a non-magnetic metallic substrate are analyzed at zero temperature. The substrate density of states is depressed in the trimer neighbourhood, being exactly zero at the substrate chemical potential. The size of the resonance strongly depends on the magnetic state of the trimer, and exhibits a two-state behavior. The geometrical dependence of these results agree qualitatively with recent experiments and could be reproduced in a triangular quantum dot arrangement.

Spin order in the one-dimensional Kondo and Hund lattices

We study numerically the one-dimensional Kondo and Hund lattices consisting of localized spins interacting antiferro or ferromagnetically with the itinerant electrons, respectively. Using the Density Matrix Renormalization Group we find, for both models and in the small coupling regime, the existence of new magnetic phases where the local spins order forming ferromagnetic islands coupled antiferromagnetically. Furthermore, by increasing the interaction parameter $|J|$ we find that this order evolves toward the ferromagnetic regime through a spiral-like phase with longer characteristic wave lengths. These results shed new light on the zero temperature magnetic phase diagram for these models.

Detection of topological transitions by transport through molecules and nanodevices

We analyze the phase transitions of an interacting electronic system weakly coupled to free-electron leads by considering its zero-bias conductance. This is expressed in terms of two effective impurity models for the cases with and without spin degeneracy. We demonstrate using the half-filled ionic Hubbard ring that the weight of the first conductance peak as a function of external flux or of the difference in gate voltages between even and odd sites allows one to identify the topological charge transition between a correlated insulator and a band insulator.

Spin-charge separation in Aharonov-Bohm rings of interacting electrons

We investigate the properties of strongly correlated electronic models on a flux-threaded ring connected to semi-infinite free-electron leads. The interference pattern of such an Aharonov-Bohm ring shows sharp dips at certain flux values, determined by the filling, which are a consequence of spin-charge separation in a nanoscopic system.

Spin-orbit coupling and electron spin resonance for interacting electrons in carbon nanotubes

We review the theoretical description of spin-orbit scattering and electron spin resonance in carbon nanotubes. Particular emphasis is laid on the effects of electron-electron interactions. The spin-orbit coupling is derived, and the resulting ESR spectrum is analyzed both using the effective low-energy field theory and numerical studies of finite-size Hubbard chains and two-leg Hubbard ladders. For single-wall tubes, the field theoretical description predicts a double peak spectrum linked to the existence of spin-charge separation. The numerical analysis basically confirms this picture, but also predicts additional features in finite-size samples.

Charge and spin conductance through a side-coupled quantum dot

The zero-temperature magnetic field-dependent conductance of electrons through a one-dimensional non-interacting tight-binding chain with an interacting {\it side} dot is reviewed and analized further. When the number of electrons in the dot is odd, and the Kondo effect sets in at the impurity site, the conductance develops a wide minimum as a function of the gate voltage, being zero at the unitary limit. Application of a magnetic field progressively destroys the Kondo effect and, accordingly, the conductance develops pairs of dips separated by $U$, where $U$ is the repulsion between two electrons at the impurity site. Each one of the two dips in the conductance corresponds to a perfect spin polarized transmission, opening the possibility for an optimum spin filter. The results are discussed in terms of Fano resonances between two interfering transmission channels, applied to recent experimental results, and compared with results corresponding to the standard substitutional configuration, where the dot is at the central site of the non-interacting chain.

Spin filters with Fano dots

We compute the zero bias conductance of electrons through a single ballistic channel weakly coupled to a side quantum dot with Coulomb interaction. In contrast to the standard setup which is designed to measure the transport through the dot, the channel conductance reveals Coulomb blockade dips rather then peaks due to the Fano-like backscattering. At zero temperature the Kondo effect leads to the formation of broad valleys of small conductance corresponding to an odd number of electrons on the dot. By applying a magnetic field in the dot region we find two dips corresponding to a total suppression in the conductance of spins up and down separated by an energy of the order of the Coulomb interaction. This provides a possibility of a perfect spin filter.

Charge and spin inhomogeneous phases in the Ferromagnetic Kondo Lattice Model

We study numerically the one-dimensional ferromagnetic Kondo lattice. This model is widely used to describe nickel and manganese perovskites. Due to the competition between double and super-exchange, we find a region where the formation of magnetic polarons induces a charge-ordered state. This ordering is present even in the absence of any inter-site Coulomb repulsion. There is an insulating gap associated to the charge structure formation. We also study the insulator-metal transition induced by a magnetic field which removes simultaneously both charge and spin ordering.

Spin-orbit coupling and ESR theory for carbon nanotubes

A theoretical description of ESR in 1D interacting metals is given, with primary emphasis on carbon nanotubes. The spin-orbit coupling is derived, and the resulting ESR spectrum is analyzed by field theory and exact diagonalization. Drastic differences in the ESR spectra of single-wall and multi-wall nanotubes are found. For single-wall tubes, the predicted double peak spectrum could reveal spin-charge separation.

Quasiparticles and c-axis coherent hopping in high T_c superconductors

We study the problem of the low-energy quasiparticle spectrum of the extended t-J model and analyze the coherent hopping between weakly coupled planes described by this model. Starting with a two-band model describing the Cu-O planes and the unoccupied bands associated to the metallic atoms located in between the planes, we obtain effective hopping matrix elements describing the c-axis charge transfer. A computational study of these processes shows an anomalously large charge anisotropy for doping concentrations around and below the optimal doping.

Mirages and enhanced magnetic interactions in quantum corrals

We develop a theory for the interactions between magnetic impurities in nanoscopic systems. The case of impurities in quantum corrals built on the (111) Cu surface is analyzed in detail. For elliptical corrals with one impurity, clear magnetic mirages are obtained. This leads to an enhancement of the inter-impurity interactions when two impurities are placed at special points in the corral. We discuss the enhancement of the conduction electron response to the local perturbation in other nanoscopic systems.

Kondo resonances and Fano antiresonances in transport through quantum dots

The transmission of electrons through a non-interacting tight-binding chain with an interacting side quantum dot (QD) is analized. When the Kondo effect develops at the dot the conductance presents a wide minimum, reaching zero at the unitary limit. This result is compared to the opposite behaviour found in an embedded QD. Application of a magnetic field destroys the Kondo effect and the conductance shows pairs of dips separated by the charging energy U. The results are discussed in terms of Fano antiresonances and explain qualitatively recent experimental results.

Spectroscopic and magnetic mirages of impurities in nanoscopic systems

We present exact results for magnetic impurities in nanoscopic systems with focusing properties. We analyze the spectroscopic and magnetic properties of Kondo, intermediate valence and magnetic impurities on a sphere with a metallic surface. Exact calculations show the occurrence of spectroscopic and magnetic mirages at the antipodes of the impurity location. Comparison with calculations performed using effective models validates previous calculations of spectroscopic mirages. Our results can be extended to other systems with focusing properties like quantum corrals.

Island phases and charge order in two-dimensional manganites

The ferromagnetic Kondo lattice model with an antiferromagnetic interaction between localized spins is a minimal description of the competing kinetic t and magnetic K energy terms which generate the rich physics of manganite systems. Motivated by the discovery in one dimension of homogeneous ``island phases'', we consider the possibility of analogous phases in higher dimensions. We characterize the phases present at commensurate fillings, and consider in detail the effects of phase separation in all filling and parameter regimes. We deduce that island and flux phases are stable for intermediate values of K/t at the commensurate fillings n = 1/4, 1/3, 3/8, and 1/2. We discuss the connection of these results to the charge and magnetic ordering observed in a wide variety of manganite compounds.

Phase diagram of the extended Hubbard chain with charge-dipole interactions

We consider a modified extended Hubbard model (EHM) which, in addition to the on-site repulsion U and nearest-neighbor repulsion V, includes polarization effects in second-order perturbation theory. The model is equivalent to an EHM with renormalized U plus a next-nearest-neighbor repulsion term. Using a method based on topological quantum numbers (charge and spin Berry phases), we generalize to finite hopping t the quantum phase diagram in one dimension constructed by van den Brink et al. (Phys. Rev. Lett. 75, 4658 (1995)). At hopping t=0 there are two charge density-wave phases, one spin density-wave phase and one intermediate phase with charge and spin ordering, depending on the parameter values. At t \neq 0 the nature of each phase is confirmed by studying correlation functions. However, in addition to the strong-coupling phases, a small region with bond ordering appears. The region occupied by the intermediate phase first increases and then decreases with increasing t, until it finally disappears for t of the order but larger than U. For small t, the topological transitions agree with the results of second order perturbation theory.
