Fermi-surface mapping from Compton profiles: Application to beryllium

The two-dimensional momentum density of Be on the basal GMK plane, i.e. the line integral of the three-dimensional momentum density along the c-axis, is reconstructed via the Cormack method from both experimental and theoretical Compton profiles. It is shown that in the case of Be, despite the momentum density is highly anisotropic, merely two Compton profiles are sufficient to reproduce the main features of the momentum density. The analysis of the reconstructed densities is performed both in the extended and reduced zone schemes.

Electron momentum density in yttrium

A simultaneous analysis of high-resolution directional Compton profiles and two-dimensional angular correlation of positron annihilation experimental data has been performed by studying both a directional anisotropy of measured spectra and reconstructed densities. The results were compared with theoretical fully-relativistic augmented plane-wave calculations with and without including correlation effects. Estimated symmetry selection rules have allowed us to establish some values of Fermi momenta. Both experiments show exactly the same shape of the anisotropy of the momentum densities, in agreement with the band structure results. In the positron annihilation data electron-positron correlations are not seen while in both experiments electron-electron correlations are observed.

Electrode thickness measurement of a Si(Li) detector for the SIXA array

Cathode electrodes of the Si(Li) detector elements of the SIXA X-ray spectrometer array are formed by gold-palladium alloy contact layers. The equivalent thickness of gold in one element was measured by observing the characteristic L-shell X-rays of gold excited by monochromatised synchrotron radiation with photon energies above the L3 absorption edge of gold. The results obtained at 4 different photon energies below the L2 edge yield an average value of 22.4(35) nm which is consistent with the earlier result extracted from detection efficiency measurements.
