The Energy Spectrum of Telescope Array's Middle Drum Detector and the Direct Comparison to the High Resolution Fly's Eye Experiment

The Telescope Array's Middle Drum fluorescence detector was instrumented with telescopes refurbished from the High Resolution Fly's Eye's HiRes-1 site. The data observed by Middle Drum in monocular mode was analyzed via the HiRes-1 profile-constrained geometry reconstruction technique and utilized the same calibration techniques enabling a direct comparison of the energy spectra and energy scales between the two experiments. The spectrum measured using the Middle Drum telescopes is based on a three-year exposure collected between December 16, 2007 and December 16, 2010. The calculated difference between the spectrum of the Middle Drum observations and the published spectrum obtained by the data collected by the HiRes-1 site allows the HiRes-1 energy scale to be transferred to Middle Drum. The HiRes energy scale is applied to the entire Telescope Array by making a comparison between Middle Drum monocular events and hybrid events that triggered both Middle Drum and the Telescope Array's scintillator Ground Array.

Anisotropies in the diffuse gamma-ray background measured by the Fermi LAT

The contribution of unresolved sources to the diffuse gamma-ray background could induce anisotropies in this emission on small angular scales. We analyze the angular power spectrum of the diffuse emission measured by the Fermi LAT at Galactic latitudes |b| > 30 deg in four energy bins spanning 1 to 50 GeV. At multipoles \ell \ge 155, corresponding to angular scales \lesssim 2 deg, angular power above the photon noise level is detected at >99.99% CL in the 1-2 GeV, 2-5 GeV, and 5-10 GeV energy bins, and at >99% CL at 10-50 GeV. Within each energy bin the measured angular power takes approximately the same value at all multipoles \ell \ge 155, suggesting that it originates from the contribution of one or more unclustered source populations. The amplitude of the angular power normalized to the mean intensity in each energy bin is consistent with a constant value at all energies, C_P/ ^2 = 9.05 +/- 0.84 x 10^{-6} sr, while the energy dependence of C_P is consistent with the anisotropy arising from one or more source populations with power-law photon spectra with spectral index Γ_s = 2.40 +/- 0.07. We discuss the implications of the measured angular power for gamma-ray source populations that may provide a contribution to the diffuse gamma-ray background.

New air fluorescence detectors employed in the Telescope Array experiment

Since 2007, the Telescope Array (TA) experiment, based in Utah, USA, has been observing ultra high energy cosmic rays to understand their origins. The experiment involves a surface detector (SD) array and three fluorescence detector (FD) stations. FD stations, installed surrounding the SD array, measure the air fluorescence light emitted from extensive air showers (EASs) for precise determination of their energies and species. The detectors employed at one of the three FD stations were relocated from the High Resolution Fly's Eye experiment. At the other two stations, newly designed detectors were constructed for the TA experiment. An FD consists of a primary mirror and a camera equipped with photomultiplier tubes. To obtain the EAS parameters with high accuracies, understanding the FD optical characteristics is important. In this paper, we report the characteristics and installation of new FDs and the performances of the FD components. The results of the monitored mirror reflectance during the observation time are also described in this report.

Suzaku view of X-ray Spectral Variability of the Radio Galaxy Centaurus A : Partial Covering Absorber, Reflector, and Possible Jet Component

We observed a nearby radio galaxy, the Centaurus A (Cen A), three times with Suzaku in 2009, and measured the wide-band X-ray spectral variability more accurately than the previous measurements. The Cen A was in the active phase in 2009, and the flux became higher by a factor of 1.5--2.0 and the spectrum became harder than that in 2005. The Fe-K line intensity increased by 20--30% from 2005 to 2009. The correlation of the count rate between the XIS 3--8 keV and PIN 15--40 keV band showed a complex behavior with a deviation from a linear relation. The wide-band X-ray continuum in 2--200 keV can be fitted with an absorbed powerlaw model plus a reflection component, or a powerlaw with a partial covering Compton-thick absorption. The difference spectra between high and low flux periods in each observation were reproduced by a powerlaw with a partial covering Compton-thick absorption. Such a Compton-thick partial covering absorber was for the first time observed for the Cen A. The powerlaw photon index of the difference spectra in 2009 is almost the same as that of the time-averaged spectra in 2005, but steeper by $\sim0.2$ than that of the time-averaged spectra in 2009. This suggests an additional hard powerlaw component with a photon index of $<1.6$ in 2009. This hard component could be a lower part of the inverse-Compton-scattered component from the jet, whose gamma-ray emission has recently been detected with the Fermi/LAT.

Improving signal-to-noise resolution in single molecule experiments using molecular constructs with short handles

We investigate unfolding/folding force kinetics in DNA hairpins exhibiting two and three states with newly designed short dsDNA handles (29 bp) using optical tweezers. We show how the higher stiffness of the molecular setup moderately enhances the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) in hopping experiments as compared to conventional long handles constructs (approximately 700 bp). The shorter construct results in a signal of higher SNR and slower folding/unfolding kinetics, thereby facilitating the detection of otherwise fast structural transitions. A novel analysis of the elastic properties of the molecular setup, based on high-bandwidth measurements of force fluctuations along the folded branch, reveals that the highest SNR that can be achieved with short handles is potentially limited by the marked reduction of the effective persistence length and stretch modulus of the short linker complex.

Ferromagnetic Instability in AFe4Sb12 (A = Ca, Sr, and Ba)

Magnetic, transport and thermal properties of AFe4Sb12 (A = Ca, Sr, Ba) are reported. All three compounds show a maximum in both the magnetic susceptibility and thermopower at 50 K, and a large electronic specific heat coefficient of 100 mJ/mol K2. These properties are the characteristics of a nearly ferromagnetic metal. Furthermore, a remanent moment of the order of 10-3muB/Fe was observed below 54, 48, and 40 K for A = Ca, Sr, and Ba, respectively. The volume fraction of the ferromagnetic component was estimated to be 10-20% by zero-field muSR measurements.

Search for Dark Matter WIMPs using Upward Through-going Muons in Super-Kamiokande

We present the results of indirect searches for Weakly Interacting Massive Particles (WIMPs) with 1679.6 live days of data from the Super-Kamiokande detector using neutrino-induced upward through-going muons. The search is performed by looking for an excess of high energy muon neutrinos from WIMP annihilations in the Sun, the core of the Earth, and the Galactic Center, as compared to the number expected from the atmospheric neutrino background. No statistically significant excess was seen. We calculate flux limits in various angular cones around each of the above celestial objects. We obtain conservative model-independent upper limits on WIMP-nucleon cross-section as a function of WIMP mass and compare these results with the corresponding results from direct dark matter detection experiments.

RK/100 and RK/200 Quantum Hall Array Resistance Standards

It is theoretically possible to combine several Hall bars in arrays to define new quantum standards with perfectly quantized resistance values. We have thus, for the first time, developed and fabricated novel Quantum Hall Array Resistance Standards (QHARS) made of a large number N (N=100, 50) of Hall bars placed in parallel using a triple connections technique. The Hall resistance of these quantum standards is found to be very well quantized. On the i=2 Hall plateau, the resistance of specific good arrays stays equal to RK/2N within 5 parts in 10^9 for supplying currents up to 2 mA at a 1.3 K temperature. The mean longitudinal resistance of the Hall bars which constitute the arrays has been determined through the analysis of the array equivalent electrical circuit. This measurement shows that the carrier transport in the Hall bars is dissipation-less. This work therefore demonstrates the efficiency of the multiple connections technique and consequently that QHARS are likely to extend the QHE metrological applications.

Energy of General Spherically Symmetric Solution in Tetrad Theory of Gravitation

We find the most general, spherically symmetric solution in a special class of tetrad theory of gravitation. The tetrad gives the Schwarzschild metric. The energy is calculated by the superpotential method and by the Euclidean continuation method. We find that unless the time-space components of the tetrad go to zero faster than ${1/\sqrt{r}}$ at infinity, the two methods give results different from each other, and that these results differ from the gravitational mass of the central gravitating body. This fact implies that the time-space components of the tetrad describing an isolated spherical body must vanish faster than ${1/\sqrt{r}}$ at infinity.
