Equation of state and neutron star properties constrained by nuclear physics and observation

Microscopic calculations of neutron matter based on nuclear interactions derived from chiral effective field theory, combined with the recent observation of a 1.97 +- 0.04 M_sun neutron star, constrain the equation of state of neutron-rich matter at sub- and supranuclear densities. We discuss in detail the allowed equations of state and the impact of our results on the structure of neutron stars, the crust-core transition density, and the nuclear symmetry energy. In particular, we show that the predicted range for neutron star radii is robust. For use in astrophysical simulations, we provide detailed numerical tables for a representative set of equations of state consistent with these constraints.

Quantum Monte Carlo Calculations with Chiral Effective Field Theory Interactions

We present the first quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) calculations with chiral effective field theory (EFT) interactions. To achieve this, we remove all sources of nonlocality, which hamper the inclusion in QMC calculations, in nuclear forces to next-to-next-to-leading order. We perform auxiliary-field diffusion Monte Carlo (AFDMC) calculations for the neutron matter energy up to saturation density based on local leading-order, next-to-leading order, and next-to-next-to-leading order nucleon-nucleon interactions. Our results exhibit a systematic order-by-order convergence in chiral EFT and provide nonperturbative benchmarks with theoretical uncertainties. For the softer interactions, perturbative calculations are in excellent agreement with the AFDMC results. This work paves the way for QMC calculations with systematic chiral EFT interactions for nuclei and nuclear matter, for testing the perturbativeness of different orders, and allows for matching to lattice QCD results by varying the pion mass.

New applications of renormalization group methods in nuclear physics

We review recent developments in the use of renormalization group (RG) methods in low-energy nuclear physics. These advances include enhanced RG technology, particularly for three-nucleon forces, which greatly extends the reach and accuracy of microscopic calculations. We discuss new results for the nucleonic equation of state with applications to astrophysical systems such as neutron stars, new calculations of the structure and reactions of finite nuclei, and new explorations of correlations in nuclear systems.

Neutron matter at next-to-next-to-next-to-leading order in chiral effective field theory

Neutron matter presents a unique system for chiral effective field theory (EFT), because all many-body forces among neutrons are predicted to next-to-next-to-next-to-leading order (N3LO). We present the first complete N3LO calculation of the neutron matter energy. This includes the subleading three-nucleon (3N) forces for the first time and all leading four-nucleon (4N) forces. We find relatively large contributions from N3LO 3N forces. Our results provide constraints for neutron-rich matter in astrophysics with controlled theoretical uncertainties.

Neutron matter based on consistently evolved chiral three-nucleon interactions

We present the first results for the neutron matter equation of state (EOS) using nucleon-nucleon and three-nucleon chiral effective field theory interactions that are consistently evolved in the framework of the Similarity Renormalization Group (SRG). The dependence of the EOS on the SRG resolution scale is greatly reduced when induced three-nucleon forces (3NF) are included and the residual variation, which in part is from missing induced four-body interactions, is comparable to estimated many-body perturbation theory truncation errors. The relative growth with decreasing resolution of the 3NF contributions to the energy per neutron is of natural size, but it accelerates at the lowest resolutions where strong renormalization of the long-range 3NF matrix elements is also observed.

Equation-of-state dependence of the gravitational-wave signal from the ring-down phase of neutron-star mergers

Neutron-star (NS) merger simulations are conducted for 38 representative microphysical descriptions of high-density matter in order to explore the equation-of-state dependence of the postmerger ring-down phase. The formation of a deformed, oscillating, differentially rotating very massive NS is the typical outcome of the coalescence of two stars with 1.35 $M_{\odot}$ for most candidate EoSs. The oscillations of this object imprint a pronounced peak in the gravitational-wave (GW) spectra, which is used to characterize the emission for a given model. The peak frequency of this postmerger GW signal correlates very well with the radii of nonrotating NSs, and thus allows to constrain the high-density EoS by a GW detection. In the case of 1.35-1.35 $M_{\odot}$ mergers the peak frequency scales particularly well with the radius of a NS with 1.6 $M_{\odot}$, where the maximum deviation from this correlation is only 60 meters for fully microphysical EoSs which are compatible with NS observations. Combined with the uncertainty in the determination of the peak frequency it appears likely that a GW detection can measure the radius of a 1.6 $M_{\odot}$ NS with an accuracy of about 100 to 200 meters. We also uncover relations of the peak frequency with the radii of nonrotating NSs with 1.35 $M_{\odot}$ or 1.8 $M_{\odot}$, with the radius or the central energy density of the maximum-mass Tolman-Oppenheimer-Volkoff configuration, and with the pressure or sound speed at a fiducial rest-mass density of about twice nuclear saturation density. Furthermore, it is found that a determination of the dominant postmerger GW frequency can provide an upper limit for the maximum mass of nonrotating NSs. The prospects for a detection of the postmerger GW signal and a determination of the dominant GW frequency are estimated to be in the range of 0.015 to 1.2 events per year with the upcoming Advanced LIGO detector.

Constraints on the symmetry energy and neutron skins from experiments and theory

The symmetry energy contribution to the nuclear Equation of State (EoS) impacts various phenomena in nuclear astrophysics, nuclear structure, and nuclear reactions. Its determination is a key objective of contemporary nuclear physics with consequences for the understanding of dense matter within neutron stars. We examine the results of laboratory experiments that have provided initial constraints on the nuclear symmetry energy and its density dependence at and somewhat below normal nuclear matter density. Some of these constraints have been derived from properties of nuclei. Others have been derived from the nuclear response to electroweak and hadronic probes. We also examine the most frequently used theoretical models that predict the symmetry energy and its slope. By comparing existing constraints on the symmetry pressure to theories, we demonstrate how the contribution of the three-body force, an essential ingredient in neutron matter models, can be determined.

Improved nuclear matter calculations from chiral low-momentum interactions

We present new nuclear matter calculations based on low-momentum interactions derived from chiral effective field theory potentials. The current calculations use an improved treatment of the three-nucleon force contribution that includes a corrected combinatorial factor beyond Hartree-Fock that was omitted in previous nuclear matter calculations. We find realistic saturation properties using parameters fit only to few-body data, but with larger uncertainty estimates from cutoff dependence and the 3NF parametrization than in previous calculations.

Constraints on neutron star radii based on chiral effective field theory interactions

We show that microscopic calculations based on chiral effective field theory interactions constrain the properties of neutron-rich matter below nuclear densities to a much higher degree than is reflected in commonly used equations of state. Combined with observed neutron star masses, our results lead to a radius R = 9.7 - 13.9 km for a 1.4 M_{solar} star, where the theoretical range is due, in about equal amounts, to uncertainties in many-body forces and to the extrapolation to high densities.

Chiral three-nucleon forces and neutron matter

We calculate the properties of neutron matter and highlight the physics of chiral three-nucleon forces. For neutrons, only the long-range 2 pi-exchange interactions of the leading chiral three-nucleon forces contribute, and we derive density-dependent two-body interactions by summing the third particle over occupied states in the Fermi sea. Our results for the energy suggest that neutron matter is perturbative at nuclear densities. We study in detail the theoretical uncertainties of the neutron matter energy, provide constraints for the symmetry energy and its density dependence, and explore the impact of chiral three-nucleon forces on the S-wave superfluid pairing gap.

Lowest-order contributions of chiral three-nucleon interactions to pairing properties of nuclear ground states

We perform a systematic study of the odd-even mass staggering generated using a pairing interaction computed at first order in low-momentum interactions. Building on previous work including the (nuclear plus Coulomb) two-nucleon interaction only, we focus here on the first-order contribution from chiral three-nucleon forces. We observe a significant repulsive effect from the three-nucleon interaction. The combined contribution from two- and three-nucleon interactions accounts for approximately 70% of the experimental pairing gaps. This leaves room for higher-order contributions to the pairing kernel and the normal self-energy that need to be computed consistently.

Non-empirical pairing energy functional in nuclear matter and finite nuclei

We study 1S0 pairing gaps in neutron and nuclear matter as well as in finite nuclei on the basis of microscopic two-nucleon interactions. Special attention is paid to the consistency of the pairing interaction and normal self-energy contributions. We find that pairing gaps obtained from low-momentum interactions depend only weakly on approximation schemes for the normal self-energy, required in present energy-density functional calculations, while pairing gaps from hard potentials are very sensitive to the effective-mass approximation scheme.

Dependence of the BCS 1S0 superfluid pairing gap on nuclear interactions

We study in detail the dependence of the 1S0 superfluid pairing gap on nuclear interactions and on charge-independence breaking at the BCS level. Starting from chiral effective-field theory and conventional nucleon-nucleon (NN) interactions, we use the renormalization group to generate low-momentum interactions V_{low k} with sharp and smooth regulators. The resulting BCS gaps are well constrained by the NN scattering phase shifts, and the cutoff dependence is very weak for sharp or sufficiently narrow smooth regulators with cutoffs Lambda > 1.6 fm^{-1}. It is therefore likely that the effect of three-nucleon interactions on 1S0 superfluidity is small at the BCS level. The charge dependence of nuclear interactions has a 10% effect on the pairing gap.
