Double quantum dot as a minimal thermoelectric generator

Based on numerical renormalization group calculations, we demonstrate that experimentally realized double quantum dots constitute a minimal thermoelectric generator. In the Kondo regime, one quantum dot acts as an n-type and the other one as a p-type thermoelectric device. Properly connected the double quantum dot provides a miniature power supply utilizing the thermal energy of the environment.

Effective crystal field and Fermi surface topology: a comparison of d- and dp-orbital models

The effective crystal field in multi-orbital correlated materials can be either enhanced or reduced by electronic correlations with crucial consequences for the topology of the Fermi surface and, hence, on the physical properties of these systems. In this respect, recent local density approximation (LDA) plus dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT) studies of Ni-based heterostructure have shown contradicting results, depending on whether the less correlated $p$-orbitals are included or not. We investigate the origin of this problem and identify the key parameters controlling the Fermi surface properties of these systems. Without the $p$-orbitals the model is quarter filled, while the $d$ manifold moves rapidly towards half-filling when the $p$-orbitals are included. This implies that the local Hund's exchange, while rather unimportant for the former case, can play a predominant role in controlling the orbital polarization for the extended basis-set by favoring the formation of a larger local magnetic moment.

Correlation effects in transport properties of interacting nanostructures

We discuss how to apply many-body methods to correlated nanoscopic systems, and provide general criteria of validity for a treatment at the dynamical mean field theory (DMFT) approximation level, in which local correlations are taken into account, while non-local ones are neglected. In this respect, we consider one of the most difficult cases for DMFT, namely for a quasi-one-dimensional molecule such as a benzene ring. The comparison against a numerically exact solution shows that non-local spatial correlations are relevant only in the limit of weak coupling between the molecule and the metallic leads and of low inter-atomic connectivity, otherwise DMFT provides a quantitative description of the system. As an application we investigate the role of correlations on electronic transport in quantum junctions, and we show that a local Mott-Hubbard crossover is a robust phenomenon in sharp nanoscopic contacts.

Exploring the Dark Side of Cuprate Superconductors: s-wave Symmetry of the Pseudogap

We reveal the full energy-momentum structure of the pseudogap of underdoped high-Tc cuprate superconductors. Our combined theoretical and experimental analysis explains the spectral-weight suppression observed in the B2g Raman response at finite energies in terms of a pseudogap appearing in the single-electron excitation spectra above the Fermi level in the nodal direction of momentum space. This result suggests an s-wave pseudogap (which never closes in the energy-momentum space), distinct from the d-wave superconducting gap. Recent tunneling and photoemission experiments on underdoped cuprates also find a natural explanation within the s-wave-pseudogap scenario.

One-particle irreducible functional approach - a new route to diagrammatic extensions of DMFT

We present an approach which is based on the one-particle irreducible (1PI) generating functional formalism and includes electronic correlations on all length-scales beyond the local correlations of dynamical mean field theory (DMFT). This formalism allows us to unify aspects of the dynamical vertex approximation (D\GammaA) and the dual fermion (DF) scheme, yielding a consistent formulation of non-local correlations at the one- and two-particle level beyond DMFT within the functional integral formalism. In particular, the considered approach includes one-particle reducible contributions from the three- and more-particle vertices in the dual fermion approach, as well as some diagrams not included in the ladder version of D\GammaA. To demonstrate the applicability and physical content of the 1PI approach, we compare the diagrammatics of 1PI, DF and D\GammaA, as well as the numerical results of these approaches for the half-filled Hubbard model in two dimensions.

Poor Man's Understanding of Kinks Originating from Strong Electronic Correlations

By means of dynamical mean field theory calculations, it was recently discovered that kinks generically arise in strongly correlated systems, even in the absence of external bosonic degrees of freedoms such as phonons. However, the physical mechanism behind these kinks remained unclear. On the basis of the perturbative and numerical renormalization group theory, we herewith identify these kinks as the effective Kondo energy scale of the interacting lattice system which is shown to be smaller than the width of the central peak.

Physics behind the minimum of relative entropy measures for correlations

The relative entropy of a correlated state and an uncorrelated reference state is a reasonable measure for the degree of correlations. A key question is however which uncorrelated state to compare to. The relative entropy becomes minimal for the uncorrelated reference state that has the same one-particle density matrix as the correlated state. Hence, this particular measure, coined nonfreeness, is unique and reasonable. We demonstrate that for relevant physical situations, such as finite temperatures or a correlation enhanced orbital splitting, other choices of the uncorrelated state, even educated guesses, overestimate correlations.

Mott-Hubbard transition in V2O3 revisited

The isostructural metal-insulator transition in Cr-doped V2O3 is the textbook example of a Mott-Hubbard transition between a paramagnetic metal and a paramagnetic insulator. We review recent theoretical calculations as well as experimental findings which shed new light on this famous transition. In particular, the old paradigm of a doping-pressure equivalence does not hold, and there is a microscale phase separation for Cr-doped V2O3.

Double Exchange model for nanoscopic clusters

We solve the double exchange model on nanoscopic clusters exactly, and specifically consider a six-site benzene-like nanocluster. This simple model is an ideal testbed for studying magnetism in nanoclusters and for validating approximations such as the dynamical mean field theory (DMFT). Non-local correlations arise between neighboring localized spins due to the Hund's rule coupling, favoring a short-range magnetic order of ferro- or antiferromagnetic type. For a geometry with more neighboring sites or a sufficiently strong hybridization between leads and the nanocluster, these non-local correlations are less relevant, and DMFT can be applied reliably.

Anisotropic optical conductivity of the putative Kondo insulator CeRu$_4$Sn$_6$

Kondo insulators and in particular their non-cubic representatives have remained poorly understood. Here we report on the development of an anisotropic energy pseudogap in the tetragonal compound CeRu$_4$Sn$_6$ employing optical reflectivity measurements in broad frequency and temperature ranges, and local density approximation plus dynamical mean field theory calculations. The calculations provide evidence for a Kondo insulator-like response within the $a-a$ plane and a more metallic response along the c axis and qualitatively reproduce the experimental observations, helping to identify their origin.

Quantum dynamical screening of the local magnetic moment in Fe-based superconductors

We have calculated the local magnetic susceptibility of one of the prototypical Fe-based superconductors (LaFeAsO) by means of the local density approximation + dynamical mean field theory as a function of both (imaginary) time and real frequencies with and without vertex corrections. Vertex corrections are essential for obtaining the correct $ω$-dependence, in particular a pronounced low-energy peak at $ω\sim 0.2 $eV, which constitutes the hallmark of the dynamical screening of a large instantaneous magnetic moment on the Fe atoms. In experiments, however, except for the case of x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS), the magnetic moment or the susceptibility represent typically the average over long time scales. In this respect, the frequency range of typical neutron experiments would be too limited to directly estimate the magnitude of the short-time moment.

Kinks in the periodic Anderson model

Recently, dynamical mean field theory calculations have shown that kinks emerge in the real part of the self energy of strongly correlated metals close to the Fermi level. This gives rise to a similar behavior in the quasi-particle dispersion relation as well as in the electronic specific heat. Since f-electron systems are even more strongly correlated than the -hitherto studied- d-electron systems we apply the dynamical mean field approach with the numerical renormalization group method as impurity solver to study whether there are kinks in the periodic Anderson model.

Dipole matrix element approach vs. Peierls approximation for optical conductivity

We develop a computational approach for calculating the optical conductivity in the augmented plane wave basis set of Wien2K and apply it for thoroughly comparing the full dipole matrix element calculation and the Peierls approximation. The results for SrVO3 and V2O3 show that the Peierls approximation, which is commonly used in model calculations, works well for optical transitions between the d orbitals. In a typical transition metal oxide, these transitions are solely responsible for the optical conductivity at low frequencies. The Peierls approximation does not work, on the other hand, for optical transitions between p- and d-orbitals which usually became important at frequencies of a few eVs

Enhancement of the effective disorder potential and the thermopower in Na$_x$CoO$_2$ through the electron-phonon coupling

The effects of an electron-phonon ($e$-ph) interaction on the thermoelectric properties of Na$_x$CoO$_2$ are analyzed. By means of dynamical mean field theory calculations we find that the $e$-ph coupling acts in a cooperative way with the disorder, enhancing the effective binary disorder potential strength on the Co sites, which stems from the presence or absence of a neighboring Na atom. Hence, the inclusion of the $e$-ph coupling allows us to assume smaller values of the binary disorder potential strength -- which for Na$_x$CoO$_2$ are in fact also more reasonable. More generally, we can conclude that the interplay between disorder effects and coupling to the lattice can be exploited to engineer more efficient thermoelectric materials.

Signature of antiferromagnetic long-range order in the optical spectrum of strongly correlated electron systems

We show how the onset of a non-Slater antiferromagnetic ordering in a correlated material can be detected by optical spectroscopy. Using dynamical mean-field theory we identify two distinctive features: The antiferromagnetic ordering is associated with an enhanced spectral weight above the optical gap, and well separated spin-polaron peaks emerge in the optical spectrum. Both features are indeed observed in LaSrMnO_4 [Gössling et al., Phys. Rev. B 77, 035109 (2008)]

Orbital characters of three-dimensional Fermi surfaces in Eu2-xSrxNiO4 as probed by soft-x-ray angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy

The three-dimensional Fermi surface structure of hole-doped metallic layered nickelate Eu2-xSrxNiO4 (x=1.1), an important counterpart to the isostructural superconducting cuprate La2-xSrxCuO4, is investigated by energy-dependent soft-x-ray angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. In addition to a large cylindrical hole Fermi surface analogous to the cuprates, we observe a Gamma-centered 3z2-r2-derived small electron pocket. This finding demonstrates that in the layered nickelate the 3z2-r2 band resides close to the x2-y2 one in energy. The resultant multi-band feature with varying orbital character as revealed may strongly work against the emergence of the high-temperature superconductivity.

Atomic and itinerant effects at the transition metal x-ray absorption K-pre-edge exemplified in the case of V$_2$O$_3$

X-ray absorption spectroscopy is a well established tool for obtaining information about orbital and spin degrees of freedom in transition metal- and rare earth-compounds. For this purpose usually the dipole transitions of the L- (2p to 3d) and M- (3d to 4f) edges are employed, whereas higher order transitions such as quadrupolar 1s to 3d in the K-edge are rarely studied in that respect. This is due to the fact that usually such quadrupolar transitions are overshadowed by dipole allowed 1s to 4p transitions and, hence, are visible only as minor features in the pre-edge region. Nonetheless, these features carry a lot of valuable information, similar to the dipole L-edge transition, which is not accessible in experiments under pressure due to the absorption of the diamond anvil pressurecell. We recently performed a theoretical and experimental analysis of such a situation for the metal insulator transition of (V(1-x)Crx)2O3. Since the importance of the orbital degrees of freedom in this transition is widely accepted, a thorough understanding of quadrupole transitions of the vanadium K-pre-edge provides crucial information about the underlying physics. Moreover, the lack of inversion symetry at the vanadium site leads to onsite mixing of vanadium 3d- and 4p- states and related quantum mechanical interferences between dipole and quadrupole transitions. Here we present a theoretical analysis of experimental high resolution x-ray absorption spectroscopy at the V pre-K edge measured in partial fluorescence yield mode for single crystals. We carried out density functional as well as configuration interaction calculations in order to capture effects coming from both, itinerant and atomic limits.

Critical properties of the half-filled Hubbard model in three dimensions

By means of the dynamical vertex approximation (D$Γ$A) we include spatial correlations on all length scales beyond the dynamical mean field theory (DMFT) for the half-filled Hubbard model in three dimensions. The most relevant changes due to non-local fluctuations are: (i) a deviation from the mean-field critical behavior with the same critical exponents as for the three dimensional Heisenberg (anti)-ferromagnet and (ii) a sizable reduction of the Néel temperature ($T_N$) by $\sim 30%$ for the onset of antiferromagnetic order. Finally, we give a quantitative estimate of the deviation of the spectra between D$Γ$A and DMFT in different regions of the phase-diagram.
