d-f Coulomb and quadrupole-strain interactions in DyB2C2 observed by resonant x-ray scattering

Experimental evidence of the d-f Coulomb interaction responsible for the resonant x-ray scattering (RXS) from antiferroquadrupolar order in DyB2C2 is presented. The energy dependences of the RXS intensity with polarization analysis are analyzed by considering the interference between the resonances of dipolar (E1) and quadrupolar (E2) transition processes. It is found that the structure factors for the E1 and E2 processes have the same sign for sigma-pi' but the opposite sign for sigma-sigma' channel. This result, when compared with the calculated structure factors, means that the quadrupolar moments of the 4f and 5d electrons have opposite signs to each other. Interference between nonresonant Thomson scattering from the lattice distortion and the resonant scatterings is also studied and a direct coupling between 4f and the lattice is concluded.

Resonant inelastic x-ray scattering study of hole-doped manganites La1-xSrxMnO3 (x=0.2 and 0.4)

Electronic excitations near the Fermi energy in the hole doped manganese oxides (La1-xSrxMnO3, x=0.2 and 0.4) have been elucidated by using the resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) method. A doping effect in the strongly correlated electron systems has been observed for the first time. The scattering spectra show that a salient peak appears in low energies indicating the persistence of the Mott gap. At the same time, the energy gap is partly filled by doping holes and the energy of the spectral weight shifts toward lower energies. The excitation spectra show little change in the momentum space as is in undoped LaMnO3, but the scattering intensities in the low energy excitations of x=0.2 are anisotropic as well as temperature dependent, which indicates a reminiscence of the orbital nature.

Novel in-gap spin state in Zn-doped La_1.85Sr_0.15CuO_4

Low-energy spin excitations of La1.85Sr0.15Cu1-yZnyO4 were studied by neutron scattering. In y=0.004, the incommensurate magnetic peaks show a well defined ``spin gap'' below Tc. The magnetic signals at omega=3 meV decrease below Tc=27 K for y=0.008, also suggesting the gap opening. At lower temperatures, however, the signal increases again, implying a novel in-gap spin state. In y=0.017, the spin gap vanishes and elastic magnetic peaks appear. These results clarify that doped Zn impurities induce the novel in-gap state, which becomes larger and more static with increasing Zn.

Neutron Diffuse Scattering from Polar Nanoregions in the Relaxor Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3

We have studied the neutron diffuse scattering in the relaxor PMN. The diffuse scattering appears around the Burns temperature (~620K), indicating its origin from the polar nanoregions (PNR). While the relative diffuse intensities are consistent with previous reports, they are entirely different from those of the lowest-energy TO phonon. Because of that, it has been considered that this TO mode could not be the ferroelectric soft mode. Recently, a neutron scattering study has unambiguously shown that the TO mode does soften on cooling. If the diffuse scattering in PMN originates from the soft mode condensation, then the atomic displacements must satisfy the center of mass condition. But, the atomic displacements determined from diffuse scattering intensities do not fulfill this condition. To resolve this contradiction, we propose a simple model in which the total atomic displacement consists of two components: $δ_{CM}$ is created by the soft mode condensation, satisfying the center of mass condition, and, $δ_{shift}$ represents a uniform displacement of the PNR along their polar direction relative to the surrounding (unpolarized) cubic matrix. Within this framework, we can successfully describe the neutron diffuse scattering intensities observed in PMN.

Observation of the antiferroquadrupolar order in DyB2C2 by resonant x-ray scattering

We have investigated the antiferroquadrupolar(AFQ) order in DyB$_2$C$_2$ by resonant x-ray scattering. X-rays with energies near the $L_3$ absorption edge of Dy were employed. Superlattice peaks that correspond to three kinds of propagation vectors of (1 0 0), (1 0 1/2) and (0 0 1/2) were investigated in detail with polarization analyses. The experimental results are analyzed using a formalism on resonant x-ray scattering and a model of the AFQ order. The magnetic and quadrupolar scatterings are explained by the model satisfactorily. A detailed investigation on the critical behavior of the AFQ ordering is also reported. The critical exponent $β$ is deduced to be 0.35, not far from the three-dimensional Heisenberg system. We have also succeeded in detecting the diffuse scattering above $T_{Q}$.

Orbital excitations in CMR progenitor of LaMnO3 studied by resonant inelastic x-ray scattering

We report resonant inelastic x-ray scattering experiments of the orbital ordered manganite LaMnO3. When the incident photon energy is tuned near the Mn K absorption edge, the spectra reveal three features at 2.5 eV, 8 eV and 11 eV. The 8 eV and 11 eV peaks are considered charge-transfer type excitations. On the other hand, theoretical calculations identify the 2.5 eV peak as an orbital excitation across the Mott gap, i.e. an electron excitation from the lower Hubbard band with the d3x2-r2 and d3y2-r2 orbital characters to the upper Hubbard band with the dy2-z2 and dz2-x2 ones. The observed weak dispersion and characteristic azimuthal angle dependence of this new type of excitations are well reproduced by the theory which includes orbital degeneracy and strong electron correlation.

Highly Degenerate Canted Spin Structure in Bilayer Manganite La$_{1.1}$Sr$_{1.9}$Mn$_2$O$_7$

We have examined magnetic ordering of the two-dimensional (2D) bilayer manganite La$_{1.1}$Sr$_{1.9}$Mn$_2$O$_7$ with neutron diffraction technique. Due to the two-dimensionality, there appears intense 2D ridge scattering along the tetragonal $(00l)$ direction, and the analyses of such scattering leads to a conclusion that the low temperature spin structure is a canted antiferromagnetic ordering.

Spin dynamical properties and orbital states of the layered perovskite La_2-2x_Sr_1+2x_Mn_2_O_7 (0.3 <= x < 0.5)

Low-temperature spin dynamics of the double-layered perovskite La_2-2x_Sr_1+2x_Mn_2_O_7 (LSMO327) was systematically studied in a wide hole concentration range (0.3 <= x < 0.5). The spin-wave dispersion, which is almost perfectly 2D, has two branches due to a coupling between layers within a double-layer. Each branch exhibits a characteristic intensity oscillation along the out-of-plane direction. We found that the in-plane spin stiffness constant and the gap between the two branches strongly depend on x. By fitting to calculated dispersion relations and cross sections assuming Heisenberg models, we have obtained the in-plane (J_para), intra-bilayer (J_perp) and inter-bilayer (J') exchange interactions at each x. At x=0.30, J_para=-4meV and J_perp=-5meV, namely almost isotropic and ferromagnetic. Upon increasing x, J_perp rapidly approaches zero while |J_para| increases slightly, indicating an enhancement of the planar magnetic anisotropy. At x=0.48, J_para reaches -9meV, while J_perp turns to +1meV indicating an antiferromagnetic interaction. Such a drastic change of the exchange interactions can be ascribed to the change of the relative stability of the d_x^2-y^2 and d_3z^2-r^2 orbital states upon doping. However, a simple linear combination of the two states results in an orbital state with an orthorhombic symmetry, which is inconsistent with the tetragonal symmetry of the crystal structure. We thus propose that an ``orbital liquid'' state realizes in LSMO327, where the charge distribution symmetry is kept tetragonal around each Mn site.

Magnetic frustrations in the face centered cubic antiferromagnet NiS2

Neutron scattering experiment on NiS2 single crystal revealed a honeycomb pattern of the intensity distribution in reciprocal lattice space (continuous-line structure along the fcc zone boundary) providing the first direct evidence for nearly frustrated antiferromagnetism (AF) on the face centered cubic (fcc) lattice. A small but finite lattice distortion below 30.9 K lifts the degeneracy of the magnetic ground state due to the frustration and eventually result in the coexistence of the type I and the type II AF long range orderings, which are mutually incompatible in the fcc symmetry at higher temperatures.

Neutron scattering studies of Zn-doped La2-xSrxCuO4

This paper reviews studies of the spatial modulation of spin in La2-xSrxCuO4 (LSCO) through neutron-scattering measurements of the elastic magnetic peaks, with emphasis on Zn-doped LSCO. The elastic incommensurate magnetic peaks can be categorized in two classes with respect to the temperature dependence. Nd-doped LSCO, La2CuO4+y and LSCO with x ~ 1/8 exhibit an ordinary power law behavior. On the other hand, Zn-doped LSCO and LSCO with x = 0.02-0.07 show an exponential temperature dependence, and the correlation lengths stay short. This discrepancy can be attributed to the difference in the mechanism of pinning spin fluctuations. The former systems have pinning centers which is coherent to the lattice. In the latter, however, pinning centers are randomly scattered in the CuO2 planes, thus incoherent. The incoherent pinning model is discussed with referring to recent mu-SR studies.

Vertical Boundary at x ~ 0.11 in the Structural Phase Diagram of the La1-xSrxMnO3 System (0.08 <= x <= 0.125)

The structural phase diagram of the La1-xSrxMnO3 system in the compositional range 0.08 <= x <= 0.125 has been investigated by high-resolution synchrotron x-ray powder diffraction techniques between 20-600 K. Recent studies have reported that there is an unusual rentrant-type phase transition in this range involving an abrupt change in lattice parameters but no change in the crystal symmetry, which remains orthorhombic Pbnm. The transition to the reentrant phase is from a ferromagnetic metallic to a ferromagnetic insulating phase with some unusual properties. Our results demonstrate that for samples with x =0.11-0.125 there exist two lower-symmetry structural regions having monoclinic and triclinic symmetry respectively. There is a sharp first-order transition from the monoclinic to the triclinic phase coinciding with the transition to the ferromagnetic insulating phase, and an abrupt crossover from the orthorhombic Pbnm region with a near-vertical phase boundary just below x = 0.11. The new phases indicate the presence of some novel type of orbital ordering unlike that found in LaMnO3.

Influence of Quasi-Bi-Stripe Charge Order on the Resistivity and Magnetism in a Bilayer Manganite La$_{2-2x}$Sr$_{1+2x}$Mn$_{2}$O$_{7}$

The charge ordering in the bilayer manganite system La$_{2-2x}$Sr$_{1+2x}$Mn$_{2}$O$_{7}$ with $0.30 \le x \le 0.50$ has been studied by neutron diffraction. The charge order is characterized by the propagation vector parallel to the [1 0 0] direction (MnO$_2$ direction), but the correlation length is short-ranged and extremely anisotropic, being $\sim 0.02a^{*}$ and $\sim 0.2a^{*}$ parallel and perpendicular to the modulation direction, respectively. The observed charge order can be viewed as a quasi-bi-stripe order, and accounts well for the $x$ dependence of the resistivity. The quasi-bistripe order is stable within the ferromagnetic (FM) MnO$_2$ layers in the A-type antiferromagnetic order, but is instabilized by the 3 dimensional FM order.

Incommensurate Geometry of the Elastic Magnetic Peaks in Superconducting La1.88Sr0.12CuO4

We report magnetic neutron scattering measurements of incommensurate magnetic order in a superconducting single crystal of La1.88Sr0.12CuO4. We find that the incommensurate wavevectors which describe the static magnetism do not lie along high-symmetry directions of the underlying CuO2 lattice. The positions of the elastic magnetic peaks are consistent with those found in excess-oxygen doped La2CuO4+y. This behavior differs from the precise magnetic order found in the low temperature tetragonal La1.6-xNd0.4SrxCuO4 material for which stripes of spin and charge have been observed. These observations have clear implications for any stripe model proposed to describe the static magnetism in orthorhombic La2CuO4-based superconductors.

Direct Observation of a One Dimensional Static Spin Modulation in Insulating La1.95Sr0.05CuO4

We report the results of an extensive elastic neutron scattering study of the incommensurate (IC) static spin correlations in La1.95Sr0.05CuO4 which is an insulating spin glass at low temperatures. The present neutron scattering experiments on the same x=0.05 crystal employ a narrower instrumental Q-resolution and thereby have revealed that the crystal has only two orthorhombic twins at low temperatures with relative populations of 2:1. We find that, in a single twin, only two satellites are observed at (1, +/-0.064, L)(ortho) and (0, 1+/-0.064, L)(ortho), that is, the modulation vector is only along the orthorhombic b*-axis. This demonstrates unambiguously that La1.95Sr0.05CuO4 has a one-dimensional static diagonal spin modulation at low temperatures, consistent with certain stripe models. We have also reexamined the x=0.04 crystal that previously was reported to show a single commensurate peak. By mounting the sample in the (H, K, 0) zone, we have discovered that the x=0.04 sample in fact has the same IC structure as the $x=0.05$ sample. The incommensurability parameter d for x=0.04 and 0.05, where d is the distance from (1/2, 1/2) in tetragonal reciprocal lattice units, follows the linear relation d=x. These results demonstrate that the insulator to superconductor transition in the under doped regime (0.05 </= x </= 0.06) in La2-xSrxCuO4 is coincident with a transition from diagonal to collinear static stripes at low temperatures thereby evincing the intimate coupling between the one dimensional spin density modulation and the superconductivity.

The role of single-ion excitations in the mixed-spin quasi-1-dimensional quantum antiferromagnet Nd_2BaNiO_5

Inelastic neutron scattering experiments on Nd2BaNiO5 single-crystals and powder samples are used to study the dynamic coupling of 1-dimensional Haldane-gap excitations in the S=1 Ni2+ -chains to local crystal-field transitions, associated with the rare earth ions. Substantial interference between the two types of excitations is observed even in the 1-dimensional paramagnetic phase. Despite that, the results provide solid justification for the previously proposed ``static staggered field'' model for R2BaNiO5 nickelates. The observed behaviour is qualitatively explained by a simple chain-Random-Phase-Approximation (chain-RPA) model.

Direct Observation of Antiferro-Quadrupolar Ordering - Resonant X-ray Scattering Study of DyB2C2

Antiferroquadrupolar (AFQ) ordering has been conjectured in several rare-earth compounds to explain their anomalous magnetic properties. No direct evidences for AFQ ordering, however, have been reported. Using the resonant x-ray scattering technique near the Dy L_III absorption edge, we have succeeded in observing the AFQ order parameter in DyB2C2 and analyzing the energy and polarization dependence. Much weaker coupling between orbital degrees of freedom and lattice in 4f electron systems than in 3d compounds provides an ideal platform to study orbital interactions originated from electronic mechanisms.

Structural instability associated with the tilting of CuO6 octahedra in La2-xSrxCuO4

Comprehensive inelastic neutron-scattering measurements were performed to study the soft optical phonons in La2-xSrxCuO4 at x=0.10, 0.12 and 0.18. We found at x=0.18 that the softening of Z-point phonon, suggesting incipient structural transition from the low-temperature orthorhombic (LTO) to low-temperature tetragonal (LTT) phase, breaks at Tc, which is consistent with the previous report by Lee et al. for the optimally doped x=0.15 sample. As for x=0.10 and 0.12, on the other hand, the softening continues even below Tc. It is thus clarified that the breaking of soft phonon is characteristic of La2-xSrxCuO4 in the optimally and overdoped regions. In the course of studying the soft phonons, we discovered that a central peak remains above the LTO to high-temperature tetragonal (HTT) phase transition at Ts1 and splits into incommensurate components along the (1 1 0)HTT direction at higher temperatures. This is a common feature for both x=0.12 and 0.18 and their temperature dependences of the splitting 2d can be scaled by using a renormalized temperature T/Ts1. In the high temperature limit, d saturates around d ~ 0.12 r.l.u., which value is close to the splitting of incommensurate magnetic signals. This implies that the incipient lattice modulation starts appearing at very high temperature. Details of this modulation and its relations with other properties are, however, not yet clarified.

Two ferromagnetic phases in La1-xSrxMnO3(x ~1/8)

It was discovered in La1-xSrxMnO3(x~1/8) that a field induced phase transition occurs from a ferromagnetic metal(FM) phase to a ferromagnetic insulator (FI) phase. The magnetization shows a sharp jump at the transition field accompanying with a remarkable increase of magnetoresistance. Striction measurements clarified that this transition is associated with the structural change from a Jahn-Teller(JT) distorted orthorhombic phase to a pseudo cubic phase. These results evidently show that the FI phase with a pseudo cubic symmetry is more stable in high fields than the FM phase due to the double exchange interaction. The driving force of this transition is explained by the enhancement of the ferromagnetic superexchange interaction induced by an antiferromagnetic type orbital ordering in the pseudo cubic phase, which was recently found in the anomalous X-ray scattering experiments.
