Enhancing atomic ordering, magnetic and transport properties of Mn2VGa Heusler alloy thin films toward negatively spin-polarized charge injection

Magnetic materials with negative spin polarization have attracted attention for their potential to increase the design freedom of spintronic devices. This study investigated the effects of off-stoichiometry on the atomic ordering, microstructure, and magneto-transport properties in Mn2+xV1-xGa (x = -0.2, 0, +0.2, +0.4) Heusler alloy films, which are predicted to have large negative spin polarization derived from a pseudo band gap in the majority spin channel. The Mn2+xV1-xGa films epitaxially grown on MgO(001) substrates exhibits variations of B2 and L21 order with the Mn concentration. A high-quality L21 ordered film was achieved in the Mn-rich composition (x = +0.2) with B2 and L21 order parameters of 0.97 and 0.86, respectively, and a saturation magnetization of 1.4 {\mu}B/f.u, which agrees the Slater-Pauling rule. Scanning transmission electron microscopy observations showed that B2 and L21 phases coexist in Mn-poor and stoichiometric films, while the L21 phase is dominant in the Mn-rich film with small amounts of Mn-V and Mn-Ga disorders, as revealed by laboratory and anomalous X-ray diffraction. Combined first-principles calculations and anisotropic magnetoresistance analysis confirm that the addition of excess Mn preserves the high spin polarization by suppressing the formation of detrimental antisites of V atoms occupying Mn sites. Therefore, the Mn-rich composition is promising for negatively spin-polarized charge injection in Mn2VGa-based spintronic applications.

Multi-level recording in dual-layer FePt-C granular film for heat-assisted magnetic recording

Multi-level magnetic recording is a new concept for increasing the data storage capacity of hard disk drives. However, its implementation has been limited by a lack of suitable media capable of storing information at multiple levels. Herein, we overcome this problem by developing dual FePt-C nanogranular films separated by a Ru-C breaking layer with a cubic crystal structure. The FePt grains in the bottom and top layers of the developed media exhibited different effective magnetocrystalline anisotropies and Curie temperatures. The former is realized by different degrees of ordering in the L10-FePt grains, whereas the latter was attributed to the diffusion of Ru, thereby enabling separate magnetic recordings at each layer under different magnetic fields and temperatures. Furthermore, the magnetic measurements and heat-assisted magnetic recording simulations showed that these media enabled 3-level recording and could potentially be extended to 4-level recording, as the up-down and down-up states exhibited non-zero magnetization.

Spin-scattering asymmetry at half-metallic ferromagnet/ferromagnet interface

We study spin-scattering asymmetry at the interface of two ferromagnets (FMs) based on a half-metallic Co$_{2}$Fe$_{0.4}$Mn$_{0.6}$Si (CFMS)/CoFe interface. First-principles ballistic transport calculations based on Landauer formula for (001)-CoFe/CFMS/CoFe indicate strong spin-dependent conductance at the CFMS/CoFe interface, suggesting a large interface spin-scattering asymmetry coefficient ($\gamma$). Fully epitaxial current-perpendicular-to-plane giant magnetoresistance (CPP-GMR) pseudo-spin-valve (PSV) devices involving CoFe/CFMS/Ag/CFMS/CoFe structures exhibit an enhancement in MR output owing to the formation of the CFMS/CoFe interface at room temperature (RT). This is well reproduced qualitatively by a simulation based on a generalized two-current series-resistor model with considering the presence of $\gamma$ at the CFMS/CoFe interface, half-metallicity of CFMS, and combinations of terminated atoms at the interfaces in the CPP-GMR PSV structure. We show direct evidence for a large $\gamma$ at a half-metallic FM/FM interface and its impact on CPP-GMR effect even at RT.

Anisotropy induced spin re-orientation in chemically-modulated amorphous ferrimagnetic films

The ability to tune the competition between the in-plane and out-of-plane orientation of magnetization provides a means to construct thermal sensors with a sharp spin re-orientation transition at specific temperatures. We have observed such a tuneable, temperature driven spin re-orientation in structurally amorphous, ferrimagnetic rare earth-transition metal (RE-TM) alloy thin films using scanning transmission X-ray microscopy (STXM) and magnetic measurements. The nature of the spin re-orientation transition in FeGd can be fully explained by a non-equilibrium, nanoscale modulation of the chemical composition of the films. This modulation leads to a magnetic domain pattern of nanoscale speckles superimposed on a background of in-plane domains that form Laudau configurations in micron-scale patterned elements. It is this speckle magnetic structure that gives rise to a sharp two step-reversal mechanism that is temperature dependent. The possibility to balance competing anisotropies through the temperature opens opportunities to create and manipulate topological spin textures.

Inducing out-of-plane precession of magnetization for microwave assisted magnetic recording using an oscillating polarizer in spin torque oscillator

We investigated the dynamics of a novel design of spin torque oscillator (STO) for microwave assisted magnetic recording. Using Ni$_{80}$Fe$_{20}$ (NiFe) as the polarizer and Fe$_{67}$Co$_{33}$ (FeCo) as the field generating layer, we experimentally observed the magnetization reversal of NiFe, followed by multiple signals in the power spectra as the bias voltage increased. The signals reflected the out-of-plane precession (OPP) mode oscillation of both FeCo and NiFe, as well as the magnetoresistance effect of the STO device, which had the frequency equal to the difference between the oscillation frequency of NiFe and FeCo. Such dynamics were reproduced by micromagnetic simulation. In addition to the merit of realizing the OPP mode oscillation with a simple and thin structure suitable for a narrow gap recording head, the experimental results using this design suggested that a large cone angle of $\sim$ 70$^{\circ}$ for the OPP mode oscillation of FeCo was achieved, which was estimated based on the macrospin model.

Searching the weakest link: Demagnetizing fields and magnetization reversal in permanent magnets

Magnetization reversal in permanent magnets occurs by the nucleation and expansion of reversed domains. Micromagnetic theory offers the possibility to localize the spots within the complex structure of the magnet where magnetization reversal starts. We compute maps of the local nucleation field in a Nd2Fe14B permanent magnet using a model order reduction approach. Considering thermal fluctuations in numerical micromagnetics we can also quantify the reduction of the coercive field due to thermal activation. However, the major reduction of the coercive field is caused by the soft magnetic grain boundary phases and misorientation if there is no surface damage.

Accumulative magnetic switching of ultra-high-density recording media by circularly polarized light

Manipulation of the magnetization by external energies other than magnetic field, such as spin-polarized current1-4, electric voltage5,6 and circularly polarized light7-11 gives a paradigm shift in magnetic nanodevices. Magnetization control of ferromagnetic materials only by circularly polarized light has received increasing attention both as a fundamental probe of the interactions of light and magnetism but also for future high-density magnetic recording technologies. Here we show that for granular FePt films, designed for ultrahigh-density recording, the optical magnetic switching by circularly polarized light is an accumulative effect from multiple optical pulses. We further show that deterministic switching of high anisotropy materials by the combination of circularly polarized light and modest external magnetic fields, thus revealing a pathway towards technological implementation.

High spin polarization and large spin splitting in equiatomic quaternary CoFeCrAl Heusler alloy

In this paper, we investigate CoFeCrAl alloy by means of various experimental techniques and ab-initio calculations to look for half-metallic nature. The alloy is found to exist in the cubic Heusler structure, with presence of B2 ordering. Saturation magnetization (MS) value of about 2 Bohr magneton/f.u. is observed at 8 K under ambient pressure, which is in good agreement with the Slater-Pauling rule. MS values are found to be independent of pressure, which is a prerequisite for half-metals. The ab-initio electronic structure calculations predict half-metallic nature for the alloy with a spin slitting energy of 0.31 eV. Importantly, this system shows a high current spin polarization value of 0.67 [with error of 0.02], as deduced from the point contact Andreev reflection (PCAR) measurements. Linear dependence of electrical resistivity with temperature indicates the possibility of reasonably high spin polarization at elevated temperatures (~150 K) as well. All these suggest that CoFeCrAl is a promising material for the spintronic devices.

Spin gapless semiconducting behavior in equiatomic quaternary CoFeMnSi Heusler alloy

Spin gapless semiconductors (SGS) form a new class of magnetic semiconductors, which has a band gap for one spin sub band and zero band gap for the other, and thus are useful for tunable spin transport based applications. In this paper, we report the first experimental evidence for spin gapless semiconducting behavior in CoFeMnSi Heusler alloy. Such a behavior is also confirmed by first principles band structure calculations. The most stable configuration obtained by the theoretical calculation is verified by experiment. The alloy is found to crystallize in the cubic Heusler structure (LiMgPdSn type) with some amount of disorder and has a saturation magnetization of 3.7 Bohr's magneton/f.u.. and Curie temperature of 620 K. The saturation magnetization is found to follow the Slater-Pauling behavior, one of the prerequisites for SGS. Nearly temperature-independent carrier concentration and electrical conductivity is observed from 5 to 300 K. An anomalous Hall coefficient of 162 S/cm is obtained at 5 K. Point contact Andreev reflection data has yielded the current spin polarization value of 0.64, which is found to be robust against the structural disorder. All these properties are quite promising for the spintronic applications such as spin injection and can bridge a gap between the contrasting behavior of half-metallic ferromagnets and semiconductors.

High spin polarization in CoFeMnGe quaternary Heusler alloy

We report the structure, magnetic property and spin polarization of CoFeMnGe equiatomic quaternary Heusler alloy. The alloy was found to exist in the L21 structure with considerable amount of DO3 disorder. Thermal analysis result indicated the Curie temperature is about 711K without any other phase transformation up to melting temperature. The magnetization value was close to that predicted by the Slater-Pauling curve. Current spin polarization of P = 0.70 {plus/minus}0.1 was deduced using point contact Andreev reflection (PCAR) measurements. Half-metallic trend in the resistivity has also been observed in the temperature range of 5 K to 300 K. Considering the high spin polarization and Curie temperature, this material appears to be promising for spintronic applications.

All-optical control of ferromagnetic thin films and nanostructures

The interplay of light and magnetism has been a topic of interest since the original observations of Faraday and Kerr where magnetic materials affect the light polarization. While these effects have historically been exploited to use light as a probe of magnetic materials there is increasing research on using polarized light to alter or manipulate magnetism. For instance deterministic magnetic switching without any applied magnetic fields using laser pulses of the circular polarized light has been observed for specific ferrimagnetic materials. Here we demonstrate, for the first time, optical control of ferromagnetic materials ranging from magnetic thin films to multilayers and even granular films being explored for ultra-high-density magnetic recording. Our finding shows that optical control of magnetic materials is a much more general phenomenon than previously assumed. These results challenge the current theoretical understanding and will have a major impact on data memory and storage industries via the integration of optical control of ferromagnetic bits.

Current-perpendicular-to-plane giant magnetoresistance of a spin valve using Co2MnSi Heusler alloy electrodes

We report the current-perpendicular-to-plane giant magnetoresistance of a spin valve with Co2MnSi (CMS) Heusler alloy ferromagnetic electrodes. A multilayer stack of Cr/Ag/Cr/CMS/Cu/CMS/Fe25Co75/Ir28Mn72/Ru was deposited on a MgO (001) single crystal substrate. The bottom CMS layer was epitaxially grown on the Cr/Ag/Cr buffer layers and was ordered to the L21 structure after annealing at 673 K. The upper CMS layer was found to grow epitaxially on the Cu spacer layer despite the large lattice mismatch between Cu and CMS. The highest MR ratios of 8.6% and 30.7% for CPP-GMR were recorded at room temperature and 6 K, respectively. The high spin polarization of the epitaxial CMS layers is the most likely origin of the high MR ratio.

Interlayer exchange coupling in Co2FeAl0.5Si0.5/Cr/Co2FeAl0.5Si0.5 trilayers

Interlayer exchange couplings were examined for Co2FeAl0.5Si0.5(CFAS)/Cr/CFAS trilayered films grown on MgO (001) single crystal and thermally oxidized Si substrates. The films were (001) epitaxial on MgO and (110) textured polycrystalline on SiO2. Strong exchange couplings were observed for the films with the 1.5 nm thick Cr spacer layer. A 90 degree coupling is dominant in the (001) epitaxial film. In contrast, an antiparallel coupling exists in the polycrystalline one. The relationship of interlayer couplings with the structure is discussed.

Preparation of Monodisperse and Highly Coercive L10-FePt Nanoparticles Dispersible in Nonpolar Organic Solvents

A method to prepare monodisperse and highly coercive L10-FePt nanoparticles which are dispersible in nonpolar organic solvents such as toluene, chloroform, and hexane was developed. By vigorously stirring the SiO2-coated L10-FePt nanoparticles synthesized by the SiO2-nanoreactor method (Appl. Phys. Lett. 2005, 87, 032503) in a mixture of an aqueous NaOH solution, chloroform, and hexadecyltrimethlyammonium bromide, the SiO2 coating was dissolved off and bare FePt nanoparticles could be extracted to the chloroform phase without degrading their magnetic properties. These particles showed a tendency to form a close packed lattice on slow drying of the chloroform-based solution. The present success may promote the practical application to ultra-high density magnetic recording and also may open the door to providing these particles with new physical and/or chemical functions.
