Cooper pair splitting efficiency in the hybrid three-terminal quantum dot

Nanodevices consisting of a quantum dot tunnel coupled to one superconducting and two normal electrodes may serve as a source of entangled electrons. As a result of crossed Andreev reflection the Cooper pair of s-wave character may be split into two electrons and each of them goes into a distinct normal electrode, preserving entanglement. Efficiency of the process depends on the specific system and is tunable by electric means. Our calculations show that in the studied device this efficiency may attain values as large as $80 \%$.

Novel non-local effects in three-terminal hybrid devices with quantum dot

We predict strong non-local effects in the three-terminal hybrid device, comprising the quantum dot embedded between two conducting leads and third superconducting reservoir. They result from competition between the ballistic electron transfer and the crossed Andreev scattering. The non-local voltage induced in response to the 'driving' current changes the magnitude and sign upon varying the gate potential and/or coupling to the superconducting lead. Such effect is robust both in the linear and non-linear regimes, where the screening and the long-range interactions play significant role. This novel subgap transport is provided by the Shiba states and can be contrasted with much weaker non-local effects observed hitherto in the three-terminal 'planar' junctions.

Magnetic field in holographic superconductor with dark matter sector

Based on the analytical technique the effect of the static magnetic field on the s-wave holographic superconductor with dark matter sector of U(1)-gauge field type coupled to the Maxwell field has been examined. In the probe limit, we obtained the mean value of the condensation operator. The nature of the condensate in an external magnetic field as well as the behaviour of the critical field close to the transition temperature has been revealed. The obtained upturn of the critical field curves as a function of temperature, both in four and five spacetime dimensions, is a fingerprint of the strong coupling approach.

Real space inhomogeneities in high temperature superconductors: the perspective of two-component model

The two-component model of high temperature superconductors in its real space version has been solved using Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations. The disorder in the electron and boson subsystem has been taken into account. It strongly modifies the superconducting properties and leads to local variations of the gap parameter and density of states. The assumption that the impurities mainly modify boson energies offers natural explanation of the puzzling positive correlation between the positions of impurities and the values of the order parameter found in the scanning tunnelling microscopy experiments.

Meservey-Tedrow-Fulde effect in a quantum dot embedded between metallic and superconducting electrodes

Magnetic field applied to the quantum dot coupled between one metallic and one superconducting electrode can produce a similar effect as has been experimentally observed by Meservey, Tedrow and Fulde [Phys. Rev. Lett. 25, 1270 (1970)] for the planar normal metal -- superconductor junctions. We investigate the tunneling current and show that indeed the square root singularities of differential conductance exhibit the Zeeman splitting near the gap edge features V = +/- Delta/e. Since magnetic field affects also the in-gap states of quantum dot it furthermore imposes a hyperfine structure on the anomalous (subgap) Andreev current which has a crucial importance for a signature of the Kondo resonance.

Thermoelectric phenomena in a quantum dot asymmetrically coupled to external leads

We study thermoelectric phenomena in a system consisting of strongly correlated quantum dot coupled to external leads in the Kondo regime. We calculate linear and nonlinear electrical and thermal conductance and thermopower of the quantum dot and discuss the role of asymmetry in the couplings to external electrodes. In the linear regime electrical and thermal conductances are modified, while thermopower remains unchanged. In the nonlinear regime the Kondo resonance in differential conductance develops at non-zero source-drain voltage, which has important consequences on thermoelectric properties of the system and the thermopower starts to depend on the asymmetry. We also discuss Wiedemann-Franz relation, thermoelectric figure of merit and validity of the Mott formula for thermopower.

Correlation effects in the transport through quantum dots

We study the charge and heat transport through the correlated quantum dot with a finite value of the charging energy U \neq \infty . The Kondo resonance appearing at temperatures below T_K is responsible for several qualitative changes of the electric and thermal transport. We show that under such conditions the semiclassical Mott relation between the thermopower and electric conductivity is violated. We also analyze the other transport properties where a finite charging energy U has a significant influence. They are considered here both, in the limit of small and for arbitrarily large values of the external voltage eV and/or temperature difference. In particular, we check validity of the Wiedemann-Franz law and the semiclassical Mott relation.

Influence of the pair coherence on the charge tunneling through a quantum dot connected to a superconducting lead

We analyze the charge transport through a single level quantum dot coupled to a normal (N) and superconducting (S) leads where the electron pairs exist either as the coherent (for temperatures below T_c) or incoherent objects (in a region T_c < T < T*). This situation can be achieved in practice if one uses the high T_c superconducting material where various precursor effects have been observed upon approaching $T_{c}$ from above. Without restricting to any particular microscopic mechanism we investigate some qualitative changes of the nonequilibrium charge current caused by the electron pair coherence.

Magnetic field induced rotation of the d-vector in Sr_2RuO_4

The superconductor Sr_2RuO_4 is widely believed to be a spin triplet system with a chiral order parameter analogous to the A phase of superfluid helium-3. The best evidence for this pairing state is that the Knight shift or spin susceptibility measured in neutron scattering is constant below T_c, unlike in a spin-singlet superconductor. The original Knight shift and neutron scattering measurements were performed for magnetic fields aligned in the ruthenate a-b plane. These would be consistent with a triplet d-vector d{k} aligned along the c-axis. However recently the Knight shift for fields along c was also found to be constant below T_c, which is not expected for this symmetry state. In this paper we show that while spin-orbit interaction stabilises the c-axis oriented d-vector, it is possible that only a very small external B field may be sufficient to rotate the d-vector into the a-b plane. In this case the triplet pairing model remains valid. We discuss characteristics of the transition and the prospects to detect it in thermodynamic quantities.

Thermoelectric effects in a strongly interacting quantum dot coupled to ferromagnetic leads

We study thermoelectric effects in Kondo correlated quantum dot coupled to ferromagnetic electrodes by calculating thermopower S in the Kondo regime as function of on-dot energy level and temperature. The system is represented by the Anderson model and the results agree well with those recently measured for a quantum dot coupled to nonmagnetic leads. For magnetic electrodes one observes marked dependence of S on the degree of their polarization.

Thermoelectric effects in strongly interacting quantum dot coupled to ferromagnetic leads

We study thermoelectric effects in Kondo correlated quantum dot coupled to ferromagnetic electrodes by calculating conductance, thermopower and thermal conductance in the Kondo regime. We also study the effect of the asymmetry in the coupling to the leads, which has important consequences for anti-parallel magnetization configuration. We discuss the thermoelectric figure of merit, tunnel magnetoresistance and violation of the Wiedemann-Franz law in this system. The results agree with recently measured thermopower of the quantum dot defined in a two dimensional electron gas.

Spin-Orbit Coupling and Symmetry of the Order Parameter in Strontium Ruthenate

Determination of the orbital symmetry of a state in spin triplet Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ superconductor is a challenge of considerable importance. Most of the experiments show that the chiral state of the $\hat{z} (k_x \pm ik_y)$ type is realized and remains stable on lowering the temperature. Here we have studied the stability of various superconducting states of Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ in the presence of spin-orbit coupling. Numerically we found that the chiral state is never the minimum energy. Alone among the five states studied it has $<{\bf \hat L}.{\bf \hat S} >=0$ and is therefore not affected to linear order in the coupling parameter $λ$. We found that stability of the chiral state requires spin dependent pairing interactions. This imposes strong constraint on the pairing mechanism.

Horizontal line nodes in superconducting Sr2RuO4

We analyze the possibilities of triplet pairing in Sr2RuO4 based upon an idea of interlayer coupling. We have considered two models differing by the effective interactions. In one model the quasi-particle spectra have horizontal line nodes on all three Fermi surface sheets, while in the other the spectra have line or point nodes on the alpha and beta sheets and no nodes on the gamma sheet. Both models reproduce the experimental heat capacity and penetration depth results, but the calculated specific heat is sightly closer to experiment in the second solution with nodes only on the alpha and beta sheets.

Electron transport through strongly interacting quantum dot coupled to normal metal and superconductor

We study the electron transport through the quantum dot coupled to the normal metal and BCS-like superconductor (N - QD - S) in the presence of the Kondo effect and Andreev scattering. The system is described by the single impurity Anderson model in the limit of strong on-dot interaction. We use recently proposed equation of motion technique for Keldysh nonequilibrium Green's function together with the modified slave boson approach to study the electron transport. We derive formula for the current which contains various tunneling processes and apply it to study the transport through the system. We find that the Andreev conductance is strongly suppressed and there is no zero-bias (Kondo) anomaly in the differential conductance. We discuss effects of the particle-hole asymmetry in the electrodes as well as the asymmetry in the couplings.

Gap Nodes and Time Reversal Symmetry Breaking in Strontium Ruthenate

We study the superconducting state of Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ on the bases of a phenomenological but orbital specific description of the electron-electron attraction and a realistic quantitative account of the electronic structure in the normal state. We found that a simple model which features both `in plane' and `out of plane' coupling with strengths $U_{\parallel}=40$meV and $U_{\perp}=48$meV respectively reproduced the experimentally observed power law behaviour of the low temperature specific heat $C_v(T)$, superfluid density $n_s(T)$ and thermal conductivity in quantitative detail. Moreover, it predicts that the quasi-particle spectrum on the $γ$ -sheet is fully gaped and the corresponding order parameter breaks the time reversal symmetry. We have also investigated the stability of this model to inclusion of further interaction constants in particular %those which describe `proximity coupling' between orbitals contributing to the $γ$ sheet of the Fermi surface and the $α$ and $β$ sheets. We found that the predictions of the model are robust under such changes. Finally, we have incorporated a description of weak disorder into the model and explored some of its consequences. For example we demonstrated that the disorder has a more significant effect on the $f$-wave component of the order parameter than on the p-wave one.

Isotope effect in impure high T_c superconductors

The influence of various kinds of impurities on the isotope shift exponent αof high temperature superconductors has been studied. In these materials the dopant impurities, like Sr in La_{2-x}Sr_xCuO_4, play different role and usually occupy different sites than impurities like Zn, Fe, Ni {\it etc} intentionally introduced into the system to study its superconducting properties. In the paper the in-plane and out-of-plane impurities present in layered superconductors have been considered. They differently affect the superconducting transition temperature T_c. The relative change of isotope shift coefficient, however, is an universal function of T_c/T_{c0} (T_{c0} reffers to impurity free system) {\it i.e.} for angle independent scattering rate and density of states function it does not depend whether the change of T_c is due to in- or out-of-plane impurities. The role of the anisotropic impurity scattering in changing oxygen isotope coefficient of superconductors with various symmetries of the order parameter is elucidated. The comparison of the calculated and experimental dependence of α/α_0, where α_0 is the clean system isotope shift coefficient, on T_c/T_{c0} is presented for a number of cases studied. The changes of αcalculated within stripe model of superconductivity in copper oxides resonably well describe the data on La_{1.8}Sr_{0.2}Cu_{1-x}(Fe,Ni)_xO_4, without any fitting parameters.

Spin triplet superconductivity in Sr2RuO4

Sr2RuO4 is at present the best candidate for being a superconducting analogue of the triplet superfluidity in ^3He. This material is a good (albeit correlated) Fermi liquid in the normal state and an exotic superconductor below Tc. The mechanism of superconductivity and symmetry of the order parameter are the main puzzling issues of on-going research. Here we present the results of our search for a viable description of the superconducting state realised in this material. Our calculations are based on a three-dimensional effective three-band model with a realistic band structure. We have found a state with non-zero order parameter on each of the three sheets of the Fermi surface. The corresponding gap in the quasi-particle spectrum has line or point nodes on the alpha and beta sheets and is complex with no nodes on the gamma sheet. This state describes remarkably well a number of existing experiments including power low temperature dependence of the specific heat, penetration depth, thermal conductivity etc. The stability of the state with respect to disorder and different interaction parameters are also analyzed briefly.
