Observation of Coulomb-assisted nuclear bound state of $Ξ^-$-$^{14}$N system

In an emulsion-counter hybrid experiment performed at J-PARC, a $Ξ^-$ absorption event was observed which decayed into twin single-$Λ$ hypernuclei. Kinematic calculations enabled a unique identification of the reaction process as $Ξ^{-} + ^{14}$N$\ \rightarrow\ ^{10}_Λ$Be + $^5_Λ$He. For the binding energy of the $Ξ^{-}$ hyperon in the $Ξ^-$-$^{14}$N system a value of $1.27 \pm 0.21$ MeV was deduced. The energy level of $Ξ^-$ is likely a nuclear $1p$ state which indicates a weak $ΞN$-$ΛΛ$ coupling.

Stationary scattering theory for $1$-body Stark operators, II

We study and develop the stationary scattering theory for a class of one-body Stark Hamiltonians with short-range potentials, including the Coulomb potential, continuing our study in [AIIS1,AIIS2]. The classical scattering orbits are parabolas parametrized by asymptotic orthogonal momenta, and the kernel of the (quantum) scattering matrix at a fixed energy is defined in these momenta. We show that the scattering matrix is a classical type pseudodifferential operator and compute the leading order singularities at the diagonal of its kernel. Our approach can be viewed as an adaption of the method of Isozaki-Kitada [IK] used for studying the scattering matrix for one-body Schrödinger operators without an external potential. It is more flexible and more informative than the more standard method used previously by Kvitsinsky-Kostrykin [KK1] for computing the leading order singularities of the kernel of the scattering matrix in the case of a constant external field (the Stark case). Our approach relies on Sommerfeld's uniqueness result in Besov spaces, microlocal analysis as well as on classical phase space constructions.

Design and Performance of a Silicon Tungsten Calorimeter Prototype Module and the Associated Readout

We describe the details of a silicon-tungsten prototype electromagnetic calorimeter module and associated readout electronics. Detector performance for this prototype has been measured in test beam experiments at the CERN PS and SPS accelerator facilities in 2015/16. The results are compared to those in Monte Carlo Geant4 simulations. This is the first real-world demonstration of the performance of a custom ASIC designed for fast, lower-power, high-granularity applications.

Evaluation of Gadolinium's Action on Water Cherenkov Detector Systems with EGADS

Used for both proton decay searches and neutrino physics, large water Cherenkov (WC) detectors have been very successful tools in particle physics. They are notable for their large masses and charged particle detection capabilities. While current WC detectors reconstruct charged particle tracks over a wide energy range, they cannot efficiently detect neutrons. Gadolinium (Gd) has the largest thermal neutron capture cross section of all stable nuclei and produces an 8 MeV gamma cascade that can be detected with high efficiency. Because of the many new physics opportunities that neutron tagging with a Gd salt dissolved in water would open up, a large-scale R&D program called EGADS was established to demonstrate this technique's feasibility. EGADS features all the components of a WC detector, chiefly a 200-ton stainless steel water tank furnished with 240 photo-detectors, DAQ, and a water system that removes all impurities in water while keeping Gd in solution. In this paper we discuss the milestones towards demonstrating the feasibility of this novel technique, and the features of EGADS in detail.

Perpendicularly Magnetized Ni / Pt (001) Epitaxial Superlattice

A perpendicularly magnetized ferromagnetic layer is an important building block for recent/future highdensity spintronic memory applications. This paper reports on the fabrication of perpendicularly magnetized Ni / Pt superlattices and the characterization of their structures and magnetic properties. The optimization of film growth conditions allowed us to grow epitaxial Ni / Pt (001) superlattices on SrTiO$_{3}$ (001) single crystal substrates. We investigated their structural parameters and magnetic properties as a function of the Ni layer thickness, and obtained a high uniaxial magnetic anisotropy energy of 1.9 x 10$^{6}$ erg/cm$^{3}$ for a [Ni (4.0 nm) / Pt (1.0 nm)] superlattice. In order to elucidate the detailed mechanism on perpendicular magnetic anisotropy for the Ni / Pt (001) superlattices, the experimental results were compared with the first-principles calculations. It has been found that the strain effect is a prime source of the emergence of perpendicular magnetic anisotropy.

Spectral theory for one-body Stark operators

We investigate spectral theory for a large class of one-body Stark Hamiltonians using a commutator technique. Our results include Rellich's theorem, the limiting absorption principle, radiation condition bounds and Sommerfeld's uniqueness theorem, all stated and proved in the framework of Besov spaces.

Observation of a Be double-Lambda hypernucleus in the J-PARC E07 experiment

A double-$Λ$ hypernucleus, ${}_{ΛΛ}\mathrm{Be}$, was observed by the J-PARC E07 collaboration in nuclear emulsions tagged by the $(K^{-},K^{+})$ reaction. This event was interpreted as a production and decay of $ {}_{ΛΛ}^{\;10}\mathrm{Be}$, ${}_{ΛΛ}^{\;11}\mathrm{Be}$, or ${}_{ΛΛ}^{\;12}\mathrm{Be}^{*}$ via $Ξ^{-}$ capture in ${}^{16}\mathrm{O}$. By assuming the capture in the atomic 3D state, the binding energy of two $Λ$ hyperons$\,$($B_{ΛΛ}$) of these double-$Λ$ hypernuclei are obtained to be $15.05 \pm 0.11\,\mathrm{MeV}$, $19.07 \pm 0.11\,\mathrm{MeV}$, and $13.68 \pm 0.11\,\mathrm{MeV}$, respectively. Based on the kinematic fitting, ${}_{ΛΛ}^{\;11}\mathrm{Be}$ is the most likely explanation for the observed event.

Suppression of Low-mass Galaxy Formation around Quasars at z~2-3

We have carried out deep and wide field imaging observations with narrow bands targeting 11 quasar fields to systematically study the possible photoevaporation effect of quasar radiation on surrounding low mass galaxies at $z\sim2-3$. We focused on Lyman alpha emitters (LAEs) at the same redshifts as the quasars that lie within the quasar proximity zones, where the ultra-violet radiation from the quasars is higher than the average background at that epoch. We found that LAEs with high rest-frame equivalent width of Ly$α$ emission ($EW_0$) of $\gtrsim 150$Å$~$ with low stellar mass ($\lesssim 10^8 M_{\odot}$), are predominantly scarce in the quasar proximity zones, suggesting that quasar photoevaporation effects may be taking place. The halo mass of LAEs with $EW_0>150$Å$~$ is estimated to be $3.6^{+12.7}_{-2.3}\times10^9 M_{\odot}$ either from the Spectral Energy Distribution (SED) fitting or the main sequence. Based on a hydrodynamical simulation, the predicted delay in star formation under a local UV background intensity with $J (ν_L)\gtrsim10^{-21}$ erg s$^{-1}$ cm$^{-2}$ Hz$^{-1}$ sr$^{-1}$ for galaxies having less than this halo mass is about $>20$ Myr, which is longer than the expected age of LAEs with $EW_0>150$Å. On the other hand, the photoevaporation seems to be less effective around very luminous quasars, which is consistent with the idea that these quasars are still in an early stage of quasar activity.

New methods in spectral theory of $N$-body Schrödinger operators

We develop a new scheme of proofs for spectral theory of the $N$-body Schrödinger operators, reproducing and extending a series of sharp results under minimum conditions. Our main results include Rellich's theorem, limiting absorption principle bounds, microlocal resolvent bounds, Hölder continuity of the resolvent and a microlocal Sommerfeld uniqueness result. We present a new proof of Rellich's theorem which is unified with exponential decay estimates studied previously only for $L^2$-eigenfunctions. Each pair-potential is a sum of a long-range term with first order derivatives, a short-range term without derivatives and a singular term of operator- or form-bounded type, and the setup includes hard-core interaction. Our proofs consist of a systematic use of commutators with `zeroth order' operators. In particular they do not rely on Mourre's differential inequality technique.

Spontaneous and mass-conserved formation of continuous Si frameworks

Controlled formation of porous silicon has been of primary importance for numerous landmark applications such as light emitting sources, sensors, actuators, drug delivery systems, and energy storage applications. Frequently explored methods to form the structures have long relied on selective etching of silicon, which still stands as the most controllable and reliable methods to highlight essence of the applications. Here, we demonstrate an unprecedented approach to form silicon framework, which is spontaneously formed with atomistic arrangement of silicon without gravimetric loss via single electrochemical (de)alloying with lithium. Carefully controlling bare crystallinity of Si and composite/electrode designs, we reveal that the key prerequisite to forming the structure lies in using unique dealloying dynamics of crystalline-amorphous phase transformations at room temperature. Using the feature, we clearly highlight that commercially available nano-structured silicon particles can abruptly yet uniformly transform into continuous sub-2 nm spherical silicon frameworks with size-tunable pores.

Tailored Raman-resonant four-wave-mixing process

Nonlinear optical processes are strongly dominated by phase relationships among electromagnetic fields that are relevant to its optical process. In this paper, we theoretically and experimentally show, as a typical example, that in a Raman-resonant four-wave-mixing process, the first anti-Stokes and Stokes generations can be tailored to a variety of forms by manipulating the phase relationships among the relevant electromagnetic fields.

High-resolution one-photon absorption spectroscopy of the $D\,{}^2Σ^- \leftarrow X\,{}^2Π$ system of radical OH and OD

Vacuum-ultraviolet (VUV) photoabsorption spectra were recorded of the $A\,{}^2Σ^+(v'=0)\leftarrow{}X\,{}^2Π(v''=0)$, $D\,{}^2Σ^-(v'=0)\leftarrow{}X\,{}^2Π(v''=0)$ and $D\,{}^2Σ^-(v'=1)\leftarrow{}X\,{}^2Π(v''=0)$ bands of the OH and OD radicals generated in a plasma-discharge source using synchrotron radiation as a background continuum coupled with the VUV Fourier-transform spectrometer on the DESIRS beamline of synchrotron SOLEIL. High-resolution spectra permitted the quantification of transition frequencies, relative $f$-values, and natural line broadening. The $f$-values were absolutely calibrated with respect to a previous measurement of $A\,{}^2Σ^+(v'=0)\leftarrow{}X\,{}^2Π(v''=0)$ ([wang1979]). Lifetime broadening of the excited $D\,{}^2Σ^-(v=0)$ and $D\,{}^2Σ^-(v=1)$ levels is measured for the first time and compared with previous experimental limits, and implies a lifetime 5 times shorter than a theoretical prediction ([van_der_loo2005]). A local perturbation of the $D\,{}^2Σ^-(v=0)$ level in OH was found.

Stationary scattering theory on manifolds, II

Based on our previous study [IS2] we develop fully the stationary scattering theory for the Schrodinger operator on a manifold possessing an escape function. A particular class of examples are manifolds with Euclidean and/or hyperbolic ends, possibly with unbounded and non-smooth obstacles. We develop the theory largely along the classical lines [Sa, Co] and derive in particular WKB- asymptotics of appropriate generalized eigenfunctions. As an application we solve a conjecture of [HPW] on cross-ends transmissions in its natural and strong form within the framework of our theory.

Rellich's theorem and N-body Schrodinger operators

We show an optimal version of the Rellich theorem for generalized many-body Schrodinger operators. It applies to singular potentials, in particular to a model for atoms and molecules with infinite mass and finite extent nuclei. Our proof relies on a Mourre estimate and a functional calculus localization technique.

ECFA Detector R&D Panel, Review Report

Two special calorimeters are foreseen for the instrumentation of the very forward region of an ILC or CLIC detector; a luminometer (LumiCal) designed to measure the rate of low angle Bhabha scattering events with a precision better than 10$^{-3}$ at the ILC and 10$^{-2}$ at CLIC, and a low polar-angle calorimeter (BeamCal). The latter will be hit by a large amount of beamstrahlung remnants. The intensity and the spatial shape of these depositions will provide a fast luminosity estimate, as well as determination of beam parameters. The sensors of this calorimeter must be radiation-hard. Both devices will improve the e.m. hermeticity of the detector in the search for new particles. Finely segmented and very compact electromagnetic calorimeters will match these requirements. Due to the high occupancy, fast front-end electronics will be needed. Monte Carlo studies were performed to investigate the impact of beam-beam interactions and physics background processes on the luminosity measurement, and of beamstrahlung on the performance of BeamCal, as well as to optimise the design of both calorimeters. Dedicated sensors, front-end and ADC ASICs have been designed for the ILC and prototypes are available. Prototypes of sensor planes fully assembled with readout electronics have been studied in electron beams.

Absence of positive eigenvalues for hard-core N-body systems

We show absence of positive eigenvalues for generalized 2-body hard- core Schroedinger operators under the condition of bounded strictly convex obstacles. A scheme for showing absence of positive eigenvalues for generalized N -body hard-core Schroedinger operators, N \geq 2, is presented. This scheme involves high energy resolvent estimates, and for N = 2 it is implemented by a Mourre commutator type method. A particular example is the Helium atom with the assumption of infinite mass and finite extent nucleus.
