Resolving the Discrepancy of 135 MeV pd Elastic Scattering Cross Sections and Relativistic Effects

Three precise measurements for elastic pd scattering at 135 MeV/A have been performed with the three different experimental setups. The cross sections are described well by the theoretical predictions based on modern nucleon-nucleon forces combined with three nucleon forces. Relativistic Faddeev calculations show that relativistic effects are restricted to backward angles. This result supports the two measurements recently reported by RIKEN and contradicts the KVI data.

Food Webs: Experts Consuming Families of Experts

The question what determines the structure of natural food webs has been listed among the nine most important unanswered questions in ecology. It arises naturally from many problems related to ecosystem stability and resilience. The traditional view is that population-dynamical stability is crucial for understanding the observed structures. But phylogeny (evolutionary history) has also been suggested as the dominant mechanism. Here we show that observed topological features of predatory food webs can be reproduced to unprecedented accuracy by a mechanism taking into account only phylogeny, size constraints, and the heredity of the trophically relevant traits of prey and predators. The analysis reveals a tendency to avoid resource competition rather than apparent competition. In food webs with many parasites this pattern is reversed.

Exploring Vacuum Manifold of Open String Field Theory

The global symmetry generated by K_n is a subgroup of the stringy gauge symmetry. We explore the part of the vacuum manifold related by this symmetry. A strong evidence is presented that the analytic classical solutions to the cubic string field theory found earlier in Refs. [5,6] are actually related by the symmetry and, therefore, all of them describe the same tachyon vacuum. Some remaining subtlety is pointed out.

Some Properties of the Speciation Model for Food-Web Structure - Mechanisms for Degree Distributions and Intervality

We present a mathematical analysis of the speciation model for food-web structure, which had in previous work been shown to yield a good description of empirical data of food-web topology. The degree distributions of the network are derived. Properties of the speciation model are compared to those of other models that successfully describe empirical data. It is argued that the speciation model unifies the underlying ideas of previous theories. In particular, it offers a mechanistic explanation for the success of the niche model of Williams and Martinez and the frequent observation of intervality in empirical food webs.

An explanatory model for food-web structure and evolution

Food webs are networks describing who is eating whom in an ecological community. By now it is clear that many aspects of food-web structure are reproducible across diverse habitats, yet little is known about the driving force behind this structure. Evolutionary and population dynamical mechanisms have been considered. We propose a model for the evolutionary dynamics of food-web topology and show that it accurately reproduces observed food-web characteristic in the steady state. It is based on the observation that most consumers are larger than their resource species and the hypothesis that speciation and extinction rates decrease with increasing body mass. Results give strong support to the evolutionary hypothesis.

Classical Solutions and Order of Zeros in Open String Field Theory

Earlier an analytic approach is proposed for classical solutions describing tachyon vacuum in open string field theory. Based on the approach, we construct a certain class of classical solutions written in terms of holomorphic functions with higher order zeros. Taking the simplest among the new classical solutions, we study the cohomology of the new BRS charge and make a numerical analysis of the vacuum energy. The results indicate that the new non-trivial solution is another analytic candidate for the tachyon vacuum.

Staggered Fermion, its Symmetry and Ichimatsu-Patterned Lattice

We investigate exact symmetries of a staggered fermion in D dimensions. The Dirac operator is reformulated by SO(2D) Clifford algebra. The chiral symmetry, rotational invariance and parity symmetries are clarified in any dimension. Local scalar and pseudo-scalar modes are definitely determined, in which we find non-standard modes. The relation to Ichimatsu-patterned lattice approach is discussed.

Pole dynamics for the Flierl-Petviashvili equation and zonal flow

We use a systematic method which allows us to identify a class of exact solutions of the Flierl-Petvishvili equation. The solutions are periodic and have one dimensional geometry. We examine the physical properties and find that these structures can have a significant effect on the zonal flow generation.

Novel Approach to Super Yang-Mills Theory on Lattice - Exact fermionic symmetry and "Ichimatsu" pattern -

We present a lattice theory with an exact fermionic symmetry, which mixes the link and the fermionic variables. The staggered fermionic variables may be reconstructed into a Majorana fermion in the continuum limit. The gauge action has a novel structure. Though it is the ordinary plaquette action, two different couplings are assigned in the ``Ichimatsu pattern'' or the checkered pattern. In the naive continuum limit, the fermionic symmetry survives as a continuum (or an $O(a^0)$) symmetry. The transformation of the fermion is proportional to the field strength multiplied by the difference of the two gauge couplings in this limit. This work is an extension of our recently proposed cell model toward the realization of supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory on lattice.

Fermionic Symmetry in Ichimatsu-Decomposed Lattice Models

We present the lattice models with exact fermionic symmetries relating fermions and link variables. The plaquettes are distributed in an Ichimatsu pattern (chequered). We explain this peculiar structure allows us to have a translation in the algebra of the fermionic symmetries.

Vacuum Structure of the Ichimatsu-Decomposed Lattice Models

We proposed an `Ichimatsu'-decomposed lattice gauge theory with fermionic symmetries. The vacuum structures of the gauge sector with two coupling constants ($β_p,β_c$) are investigated for 3-dimensional Z$_2$ and 4-dimensional SU(2) cases using mean-field approximation and numerical simulation. We found two phases on the ($β_p,β_c$) phase diagram for 3-dim. Z$_2$ case, while the diagram is a single phase for the latter.

Reaction mechanism and characteristics of T_{20} in d + ^3He backward elastic scattering at intermediate energies

For backward elastic scattering of deuterons by ^3He, cross sections σand tensor analyzing power T_{20} are measured at E_d=140-270 MeV. The data are analyzed by the PWIA and by the general formula which includes virtual excitations of other channels, with the assumption of the proton transfer from ^3He to the deuteron. Using ^3He wave functions calculated by the Faddeev equation, the PWIA describes global features of the experimental data, while the virtual excitation effects are important for quantitative fits to the T_{20} data. Theoretical predictions on T_{20}, K_y^y (polarization transfer coefficient) and C_{yy} (spin correlation coefficient) are provided up to GeV energies.

Solvable Optimal Velocity Models and Asymptotic Trajectory

In the Optimal Velocity Model proposed as a new version of Car Following Model, it has been found that a congested flow is generated spontaneously from a homogeneous flow for a certain range of the traffic density. A well-established congested flow obtained in a numerical simulation shows a remarkable repetitive property such that the velocity of a vehicle evolves exactly in the same way as that of its preceding one except a time delay $T$. This leads to a global pattern formation in time development of vehicles' motion, and gives rise to a closed trajectory on $Δx$-$v$ (headway-velocity) plane connecting congested and free flow points. To obtain the closed trajectory analytically, we propose a new approach to the pattern formation, which makes it possible to reduce the coupled car following equations to a single difference-differential equation (Rondo equation). To demonstrate our approach, we employ a class of linear models which are exactly solvable. We also introduce the concept of ``asymptotic trajectory'' to determine $T$ and $v_B$ (the backward velocity of the pattern), the global parameters associated with vehicles' collective motion in a congested flow, in terms of parameters such as the sensitivity $a$, which appeared in the original coupled equations.
