Modeling of ultrafast X-ray induced magnetization dynamics in magnetic multilayer systems

In this work, we report on modelling results obtained with our recently developed simulation tool enabling nanoscopic description of electronic processes in X-ray irradiated ferromagnetic materials. With this tool, we have studied the response of Co/Pt multilayer system irradiated by an ultrafast extreme ultraviolet pulse at the M-edge of Co (photon energy $\sim$ 60 eV). It was previously investigated experimentally at the FERMI free-electron-laser facility, using the magnetic small-angle X-ray scattering technique. Our simulations show that the magnetic scattering signal from cobalt decreases on femtosecond timescales due to electronic excitation, relaxation and transport processes both in the cobalt and in the platinum layers, following the trend observed in the experimental data. The confirmation of the predominant role of electronic processes for X-ray induced demagnetization in the regime below the structural damage threshold is a step towards quantitative control and manipulation of X-ray induced magnetic processes on femtosecond timescales.

Extended Falicov-Kimball model at weak onsite and intersite Coulomb interactions

We analyze in detail a behavior of the order parameter in the half-filled extended Falicov-Kimball model for small Coulomb interactions (both onsite $U$ and intersite $V$). The parameter is defined as the difference of localized electron concentrations in both sublattices of the Bethe lattice (in the limit of large coordination number). Using two methods, namely, the dynamic mean field theory and the Hartree-Fock approximation, we found the ranges of $U$ and $V$ for which the anomalous temperature dependence of the order parameter, characterized by the sharp reduction near $T \approx T_{\textrm{C}}/2$, occurs ($T_{\textrm{C}}$ is the temperature of the continuous order-disorder transition). In order to quantitatively describe this anomaly, we defined a function that measures the departure of the order parameter dependence from the standard mean-field $S=1/2$ Ising-like curve. We determined the $U$-dependent critical value $V_{\textrm{C}}$ of $V$ above which the anomaly disappears. Indicators of the anomalous behavior of the parameter dependence can be also observed in the temperature dependence of the specific heat.

Electronic and lattice properties of non-centrosymmetric superconductors ThTSi (T = Co, Ir, Ni, and Pt)

The theoretical studies on the electronic and lattice properties of the series of non-centrosymmetric superconductors ThTSi, where T = Co, Ni, Ir, and Pt are presented. The electronic band structure and crystal parameters were optimized within the density functional theory. The spin-orbit coupling leads to the splitting of the electronic bands and Fermi surfaces, with the stronger effect observed for the compounds with the heavier atoms Ir and Pt. The possible mixing of the spin-singlet and spin-triplet pairing in the superconducting state is discussed. The phonon dispersion relations and phonon density of states were obtained using the direct method. The dispersion curves in ThCoSi and ThIrSi exhibit the low-energy modes along the S-N-S0 line with the tendency for softening and dynamic instability. Additionally, we calculate and analyse the contributions of phonon modes to lattice heat capacity.

Doping driven metal-insulator transitions and charge orderings in the extended Hubbard model

We perform a thorough study of an extended Hubbard model featuring local and nearest-neighbor Coulomb repulsion. Using dynamical mean-field theory we investigated the zero temperature phase-diagram of this model as a function of the chemical doping. The interplay between local and non-local interaction drives a variety of phase-transitions connecting two distinct charge-ordered insulators, i.e., half-filled and quarter-filled, a charge-ordered metal and a Mott insulating phase. We characterize these transitions and the relative stability of the solutions and we show that the two interactions conspire to stabilize the quarter-filled charge ordered phase.
