Meson Correlation Functions in the epsilon-Regime

We present a numerical pilot study of the meson correlation functions in the epsilon-regime of chiral perturbation theory. Based on simulations with overlap fermions we measured the axial and pseudo-scalar correlation functions, and we discuss the implications for the leading low energy constants in the chiral Lagrangian.

Non-perturbative renormalization of moments of parton distribution functions

We compute non-perturbatively the evolution of the twist-2 operators corresponding to the average momentum of non-singlet quark densities. The calculation is based on a finite-size technique, using the Schrödinger Functional, in quenched QCD. We find that a careful choice of the boundary conditions, is essential, for such operators, to render possible the computation. As a by-product we apply the non-perturbatively computed renormalization constants to available data of bare matrix elements between nucleon states.

Spectral Properties of the Overlap Dirac Operator in QCD

We discuss the eigenvalue distribution of the overlap Dirac operator in quenched QCD on lattices of size 8^{4}, 10^{4} and 12^{4} at β= 5.85 and β= 6. We distinguish the topological sectors and study the distributions of the leading non-zero eigenvalues, which are stereographically mapped onto the imaginary axis. Thus they can be compared to the predictions of random matrix theory applied to the ε-expansion of chiral perturbation theory. We find a satisfactory agreement, if the physical volume exceeds about (1.2 fm)^{4}. For the unfolded level spacing distribution we find an accurate agreement with the random matrix conjecture on all volumes that we considered.

Pion parton distribution functions from lattice QCD

We report on recent results for the pion matrix element of the twist-2 operator corresponding to the average momentum of non-singlet quark densities. For the first time finite volume effects of this matrix element are investigated and come out to be surprisingly large. We use standard Wilson and non-perturbatively improved clover actions in order to control better the extrapolation to the continuum limit. Moreover, we compute, fully non-perturbatively, the renormalization group invariant matrix element, which allows a comparison with experimental results in a broad range of energy scales. Finally, we discuss the remaining uncertainties, the extrapolation to the chiral limit and the quenched approximation.

Extracting physics from an unphysical situation: light mesons in a small box

Quantum Chromo Dynamics is considered in a setup where the light mesons are squeezed into unphysically small boxes. We show how such a situation can be used to determine the couplings of the low energy chiral Lagrangian from lattice simulations, applying chirally invariant formulations of lattice fermions.

Simulations in the epsilon-Regime of Chiral Perturbation Theory

We discuss the potential of Ginsparg-Wilson fermion simulations in the epsilon-regime of chiral perturbation theory, regarding the determination of the leading low energy constants of the effective chiral Lagrangian. It turns out to be very hard to measure observables in the topologically trivial sector. There a huge statistics would be required, due to the frequent occurrence of very small eigenvalues. Moreover, contact with chiral perturbation theory is only established if the physical volume of the system is sufficiently large.

Random Matrix Theory and the Spectra of Overlap Fermions

The application of Random Matrix Theory to the Dirac operator of QCD yields predictions for the probability distributions of the lowest eigenvalues. We measured Dirac operator spectra using massless overlap fermions in quenched QCD at topological charge ν= 0, +- 1 and +- 2, and found agreement with those predictions - at least for the first non-zero eigenvalue - if the volume exceeds about (1.2 fm)^4.

Vector and Axial-Vector Propagators in the ε-Regime of QCD

Using quenched and unquenched chiral perturbation theory we compute vector and axial current two-point functions at finite volume and fixed gauge field topology, in the so-called ε-regime of QCD. A comparison of these results with finite volume lattice calculations allows to determine the parameters of the corresponding chiral Lagrangians.

Lattice QCD Calculations on Commodity Clusters at DESY

Lattice Gauge Theory is an integral part of particle physics that requires high performance computing in the multi-Tflops regime. These requirements are motivated by the rich research program and the physics milestones to be reached by the lattice community. Over the last years the enormous gains in processor performance, memory bandwidth, and external I/O bandwidth for parallel applications have made commodity clusters exploiting PCs or workstations also suitable for large Lattice Gauge Theory applications. For more than one year two clusters have been operated at the two DESY sites in Hamburg and Zeuthen, consisting of 32 resp. 16 dual-CPU PCs, equipped with Intel Pentium 4 Xeon processors. Interconnection of the nodes is done by way of Myrinet. Linux was chosen as the operating system. In the course of the projects benchmark programs for architectural studies were developed. The performance of the Wilson-Dirac Operator (also in an even-odd preconditioned version) as the inner loop of the Lattice QCD (LQCD) algorithms plays the most important role in classifying the hardware basis to be used. Using the SIMD Streaming Extensions (SSE/SSE2) on Intel's Pentium 4 Xeon CPUs give promising results for both the single CPU and the parallel version. The parallel performance, in addition to the CPU power and the memory throughput, is nevertheless strongly influenced by the behavior of hardware components like the PC chip-set and the communication interfaces. The paper covers the physics motivation for using PC clusters as well as a system description, operating experiences, and benchmark results for various hardware.

Continuous external momenta in non-perturbative lattice simulations: a computation of renormalization factors

We discuss the usage of continuous external momenta for computing renormalization factors as needed to renormalize operator matrix elements. These kind of external momenta are encoded in special boundary conditions for the fermion fields. The method allows to compute certain renormalization factors on the lattice that would have been very difficult, if not impossible, to compute with standard methods. As a result we give the renormalization group invariant step scaling function for a twist-2 operator corresponding to the average momentum of non-singlet quark densities.

Finite-Size Scaling of Vector and Axial Current Correlators

Using quenched chiral perturbation theory, we compute the long-distance behaviour of two-point functions of flavour non-singlet axial and vector currents in a finite volume, for small quark masses, and at a fixed gauge-field topology. We also present the corresponding predictions for the unquenched theory at fixed topology. These results can in principle be used to measure the low-energy constants of the chiral Lagrangian, from lattice simulations in volumes much smaller than one pion Compton wavelength. We show that quenching has a dramatic effect on the vector correlator, which is argued to vanish to all orders, while the axial correlator appears to be a robust observable only moderately sensitive to quenching.

Speeding up Lattice QCD simulations with clover-improved Wilson Fermions

We apply a recent proposal to speed up the Hybrid-Monte-Carlo simulation of systems with dynamical fermions to two flavour QCD with clover-improvement. The basic idea of our proposal is to split the fermion matrix into two factors with a reduced condition number each. In the effective action, for both factors a pseudo-fermion field is introduced. For our smallest quark masses we see a speed-up of more than a factor of two compared with the standard algorithm.

Speeding up the Hybrid-Monte-Carlo algorithm for dynamical fermions

We propose a modification of the Hybrid-Monte-Carlo algorithm that allows for a larger step-size of the integration scheme at constant acceptance rate. The key ingredient is the splitting of the pseudo-fermion action into two parts. We test our proposal at the example of the two-dimensional lattice Schwinger model and four-dimensional lattice QCD with two degenerate flavours of Wilson- fermions.
