Excited-Nucleon Spectroscopy with 2+1 Fermion Flavors

We present progress made by the Hadron Spectrum Collaboration (HSC) in determining the tower of excited nucleon states using 2+1-flavor anisotropic clover lattices. The HSC has been investigating interpolating operators projected into irreducible representations of the cubic group in order to better calculate two-point correlators for nucleon spectroscopy; results are published for quenched and 2-flavor anisotropic Wilson lattices. In this work, we present the latest results using a new technique, distillation, which allows us to reach higher statistics than before. Future directions will be outlined at the end.

First results from 2+1 dynamical quark flavors on an anisotropic lattice: light-hadron spectroscopy and setting the strange-quark mass

We present the first light-hadron spectroscopy on a set of $N_f=2+1$ dynamical, anisotropic lattices. A convenient set of coordinates that parameterize the two-dimensional plane of light and strange-quark masses is introduced. These coordinates are used to extrapolate data obtained at the simulated values of the quark masses to the physical light and strange-quark point. A measurement of the Sommer scale on these ensembles is made, and the performance of the hybrid Monte Carlo algorithm used for generating the ensembles is estimated.

Results and Frontiers in Lattice Baryon Spectroscopy

The Lattice Hadron Physics Collaboration (LHPC) baryon spectroscopy effort is reviewed. To date the LHPC has performed exploratory Lattice QCD calculations of the low-lying spectrum of Nucleon and Delta baryons. These calculations demonstrate the effectiveness of our method by obtaining the masses of an unprecedented number of excited states with definite quantum numbers. Future work of the project is outlined.

Hadronic Resonances from Lattice QCD

The determination of the pattern of hadronic resonances as predicted by Quantum Chromodynamics requires the use of non-perturbative techniques. Lattice QCD has emerged as the dominant tool for such calculations, and has produced many QCD predictions which can be directly compared to experiment. The concepts underlying lattice QCD are outlined, methods for calculating excited states are discussed, and results from an exploratory Nucleon and Delta baryon spectrum study are presented.

Absence of evidence for pentaquarks on the lattice

We study the question of whether or not QCD predicts a pentaquark state. We use the improved, fixed point lattice QCD action which has very little sensitivity to the lattice spacing and also allows us to reach light quark masses. The analysis was performed on a single volume of size $(1.8 {\rm fm})^3\times 3.6 {\rm fm}$ with lattice spacing of $a=0.102$ fm. We use the correlation matrix method to identify the ground and excited states in the isospin 0, negative parity channel. In the quenched approximation where dynamical quark effects are omitted, we do not find any evidence for a pentaquark resonance in QCD.

Practical all-to-all propagators for lattice QCD

A new method for computing all elements of the lattice quark propagator is proposed. The method combines the spectral decomposition of the propagator, computing the lowest eigenmodes exactly, with noisy estimators which are 'diluted', i.e. taken to have support only on a subset of time, space, spin or colour. We find that the errors are dramatically reduced compared to traditional noisy estimator techniques.

New results on cut-off effects in spectroscopy with the fixed point action

Our study on the cut-off effects in quenched light hadron spectroscopy and pion scattering length with the fixed point action is extended by results obtained at a lattice spacing a=0.102 fm in a box of size L=1.8 fm. The cut-off effects are small, but clearly seen as the resolution is increased from a=0.153 fm to a=0.102 fm. In the quark mass region where the errors are small and under control, our results on the APE plot lie close to the extrapolated numbers of the CP-PACS Collaboration.

Improving Algorithms to Compute All Elements of the Lattice Quark Propagator

We present a new exact algorithm for estimating all elements of the quark propagator. The advantage of the method is that the exact all-to-all propagator is reproduced in a large but finite number of inversions. The efficacy of the algorithm is tested in Monte Carlo simulations of Wilson quarks in quenched QCD. Applications that are difficult to probe with point propagators are discussed.

QCD String formation and the Casimir Energy

Three distinct scales are identified in the excitation spectrum of the gluon field around a static quark-antiquark pair as the color source separation R is varied. The spectrum, with string-like excitations on the largest length scales of 2-3 fm, provides clues in its rich fine structure for developing an effective bosonic string description. New results are reported from the three-dimensional Z(2) and SU(2) gauge models, providing further insight into the mechanism of bosonic string formation. The precocious onset of string-like behavior in the Casimir energy of the static quark-antiquark ground state is observed below R=1 fm where most of the string eigenmodes do not exist and the few stable excitations above the ground state are displaced. We find no firm theoretical foundation for the widely held view of discovering string formation from high precision ground state properties below the 1 fm scale.

Excitations of the static quark-antiquark system in several gauge theories

The spectrum of gluons in the presence of a static quark-antiquark pair is studied using Monte Carlo simulations on anisotropic space-time lattices. For very small quark-antiquark separations R, the level orderings and approximate degeneracies disagree with the expectations from an effective string theory. As the quark-antiquark separation R increases, a dramatic rearrangement of the energies occurs, and above 2 fm, all of the levels studied show behavior consistent with an effective string description. The energy spacings are nearly pi/R, but a tantalizing fine structure remains. In addition to 4-dimensional SU(3) gauge theory, results from 3-dimensional SU(2) and compact U(1) gauge theories are also presented.

The Casimir Energy Paradox of the QCD String

It is widely thought that the early onset of the asymptotic Casimir energy with unit conformal charge signals bosonic string formation of the confining flux connecting a static quark-antiquark pair in QCD. This is observed on a scale where most of the string eigenmodes do not exist and the few stable modes above the ground state are displaced. Hints for the resolution of this paradox are suggested.

The heavy-quark hybrid meson spectrum in lattice QCD

Recent findings on the spectrum of heavy-quark mesons from computer simulations of quarks and gluons in lattice QCD are summarized, with particular attention to quark-antiquark states bound by an excited gluon field. The validity of a Born-Oppenheimer treatment for such systems is discussed. Recent results on glueball masses, the light-quark 1-+ hybrid meson mass, and the static three-quark potential are summarized.

Fine Structure of the QCD String Spectrum

Using advanced lattice methods in Quantum Chromodynamics, three distinct scales are established in the excitation spectrum of the gluon field around a static quark-antiquark pair as the color source separation R is varied. On the shortest length scale, the excitations are consistent with states created by local gluon field operators arising from a multipole operator product expansion. An intermediate crossover region below 2 fm is identified with a dramatic rearrangement of the level orderings. On the largest length scale of 2-3 fm, the spectrum agrees with that expected for string-like excitations. The energies nearly reproduce asymptotic pi/R string gaps, but exhibit a fine structure, providing important clues for developing an effective bosonic string description.

QCD String Spectrum 2002

Results from a comprehensive new analysis on the excitation spectrum of the QCD string are presented. A rapid onset of string formation is observed in the spectrum on a length scale of 2 fm, with Dirichlet boundary conditions. The crossover from the short distance spectrum towards string excitations and an observed fine structure in the 1--3 fm range are related to effective string theory. The deficiencies of the Nambu-Goto bosonic string model in describing the observed spectrum are briefly discussed.

From Surface Roughening to QCD String Theory

Surface critical phenomena and the related onset of Goldstone modes represent fundamental properties of the confining flux in Quantum Chromodynamics. New ideas on surface roughening and their implications for lattice studies of quark confinement and string formation are presented. Problems with a simple string description of the large Wilson surface are discussed.
